Modem? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey im currently on phiremod V3 ..which is awesome by the way.. but I was on one forum and they was talking about KA5 and KA1.. Im talking it those are different modems? Can anybody explain the difference between modems...

differnet modems have different battery life and signal strength
kb5 is the newest so its suppose to be the best but iv been on ka7 most of the time and havent noticed much difference
ka7 works fine for me

Ka7 came preloaded with my cm7 but it keeps losing signal but i flashed kb5 and it works better no random signal loss so i would recommend kb5

I want to say that the different modems help the phone determine how it searches for and utilizes the signal that you are connecting to. It's interesting how something software based can make a difference between a poor signal and/or data speed. Obviously, this is assuming that you're in an area with decent coverage to begin with. =P

the best modem for a rom???

I want to know of all the modems out there wich one is the best for a rom??
look at this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9734167&postcount=1
there is not the best modem yet imho, nothing is perfect, but for froyo (2.2) many found that ka5 modem is the most efficient, reliable and fast so far.. modem performance can vary depending on where you are, how good your signal strengths is, what kinds of interference there may be.. so on. try flashing each one yourself - it's pretty quick - and see which one works best for you

Im asking cause someone told me to flash Nero V5 told me that rom was one of the most stable and great for everything i have tried out i guess every rom, and by far i can say tha Bionix V and Axura are the most impressive and then the Flagship. But im just searching and testing, to see what i like most.

sorry i misunderstood and thought you were just looking for all the modems out there- as i edited in my post i think you should really try each one for yourself.. people get various results no matter how new the modem may be.. i got bad results from the initial bionix-v with ka7 modem. no luck with kb1 either. but as soon as i updated to bionix-v v1.2 that comes with ka5 modem, my download/upload speed over 3g and wifi picked up again

Thanks the thing is im from Puerto Rico, and where im at right now i dont have 3g cause the towers arent near, so im judging most of the rom from my wifi signal and of course quality of sound voice, apps, etc etc, with every rom. So that's why im trying to find something that could give my phone the boost to work great

off topic but i wanna talk a bit about sound quality.. i just can't wait to see tw implementing the kernel eugene is testing right now. because of the source code eugene came up with he was able to add support for voodoo sound v4 which will significantly boost sound quality of our handsets. i read hundreds of pages of discussions in i9000 forum regarding supercurio's voodoo lagfix/sound projects, and only heard good things about it although i have not yet tried eugene's kernel myself amidst fear for messing up and being lazy. hopefully teamwhiskey will release a new stable version of bionix with eugene's froyo 2.2.1 kernel with voodoo sound.. it's so exciting already!

Which Radio?

I am currently running the Evil Fascinate 3.6 Rom. With the official ED04 radio. Really havent had many missed calls issues but seem to not get the best signal and seem to lose gps location sometimes. Anyone recommend a better radio i should flash through ODIN to help for that and maybe anything else?
That's my golden question too... I have tried every modem from ec01 to ed04 (and all versions in between) and now ec09. I seem to miss about 1 or 2 calls a week on all of them with the same data and gps performance. So, for my phone, there doesn't appear to be any noticeable differences. But when you look around you will notice some people getting differing results.
I suggest giving each modem a test drive to see how your phone reacts. Good luck

Do Kernals affect signal and 4G/3G

I was just wondering, Ive ran a couple different ROMS lately based on the newest leak and it seems that my 4G signal is not as good. I see 3g more it seems to even get stuck in 3g for periods of time for no apparent reason and doesn't seem to change as fast.
Now with the current ROM I'm running its a bit better, but still I'm on 3g where I got 4g before. I was just wondering if a different kernel would have any effect on this. Im not really sure it would because the kernel controls the processor and battery, stuff like that doesn't it? Radios control signal. Im wondering if the issue may be 3g/4g switching though and not an actual issue with signal.
I'm really not sure about any of it

The kernel shouldn't make a difference. Did you upgrade your radios to the latest leak?
I have this problem with the latest leak radios. I actually went back to gb radios because of it.
On the past few ics leaks I spent more time in 3g than anything.

Modem For ICS

I am run running AOKP Milestone 6 with the Devil Kernel. I switched from the stock modem to EC09 because all I hear are good things about the modem. My signal strength actually decreased from -91 to -93. What other Modems are there that I should try. My 3G was really slow with the stock modem, so I am looking for the fastest speed.

Droidstyle's guide (which you may have used) listed the modems he recommended the most (EH03, EC09, and I don't remember the other). I believe your choices might be somewhat limited by the network your on (Verizon vs. someone else), but I could be wrong.
From what I understand the EH03 (stock GB) is the fastest, so if you're not getting good speed it could be just the network like Aesrys already pointed out. Just try them all and see if any show improvement for you, if they don't then it's probably just your area. Also, have you updated roaming lately? Try *22891 which when dialed will download an updated roaming list to your phone, possibly providing better reception. When I did it I actually noticed a better signal at my house. Not sure if it'll help data too, but hey worth a shot.
I'm currently EC09 which i was running back on eclair ,,, and i also tried EH03 too,,, i actually never ran any gb roms,,, went straight to ics,,, and tried both EH03 & EC09 and the building i work in (a real tin can) just kills signal... It does seem to be very slightly better on jb roms but i finally got a decent wifi router so I'm real happy with that,,, ,,,anywhere else outside of work i get good enough 3g signal too do all i want to do...
I could and can navigate w/Google maps great,,, surf web/twitter/fb,,,etc on 3g during lunch
Before jellybean I was considering greeting a newer Samsung phone in hopes of a better 3g signal,,, but I'm glad i upgraded to jb and wifi..:thumbup:

Low AT&T Signal on Vibrant Slim bean

I was previously on froyo (i think eugene's) for a long time now. I decided to update to JB with Slim Bean. I have a rooted, unlocked vibrant using it on AT&T's network. I flashed stocked with odin then to CM9 then to Slim Bean. I've tried KB1 & KB5 modems along with Semaphore and Devil Kernels without any success increasing the signal. I used to have this problem before on froyo and changed some setting in network which gave much better signal. I usually get full bars where I am at and now after flashing with JB not even 2 bars.
Any tips? There has to be a setting which isn't catching AT&T's network properly.
Anyone using Vibrant on AT&T who knows how to fix the low signal issues with JB?

I would try ka7. I would say that it has something to do with the different bands that at&t and the vibe uses. Its odd that its JB specific. I suppose you could also try a captivate/ i9000 modem, maybe kk4.

I tried the kk4, cwm wouldnt even install it or any of the other captivate modems. Also tried I9000 modems but only very few worked in aquiring any signal. But the ones that worked aren't any better than vibrant modems. I just dont remmember how I got better signal before. It's just been too many years and that was I think on Eugene's roms.
Anything else I can try?
The low signal issue isn't the problem right now. For some reason, callers do not hear when I speak for long periods and usually have to call back or wait for sometime. This happens so frequently that the phone is unusable. I don't know if its the kernel or modem. But I've tried several ICS modems. Please can someone help out.
