My compass and GPS have always worked with the different ROMs and kernels I've tried. I was running MIUIWiz and I think the compass has worked since I flashed it but now my compass has quit working. It'll show on the screen but will not spin to show direction. I tried all the settings with no luck. I flashed ComRom with OTB kernel thinking it was maybe something with that but still no luck. We do alot of hiking and I would love for the compass to work. The GPS works great just no compass. Any suggestions or recommendations? Thanks
An interesting thing is that I also lost auto-rotation of the screen. Even if auto-rotate is on it still won't rotate on any screen with any app. I've been using Go Launcher but tried others and still won't work. I don't know if compass sensors and sensors that activate auto rotate if related but neither work. Any suggestions?
They are different sensors.
Try downloading GPS Status and calibrating your compass (under the tools menu). If that doesn't work, try downloading a metal detector app and see if you get any response. If you're getting no reading at all, then it may be a hardware failure. If the reading is there but off, it may be a calibration issue.
A temporary revert to stock EB01 fixed this issue for me, see:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038519
If you're having rotate problems, with adb or root explorer, delete m3c_sensor.cfg I think from /data/system and then toggle auto rotate. That should fix your problems.

While using stock ROMs up to 360 works fine. Every custom ROM or 40* ROMs cause these problem.
Once sensor was covered while call, display locks and doesn't unlocks until someone on the other side hang-up.
I've allready tried to wipe cache and reset everything. Calibration doesn't help too.
PS Sorry for my bad english.
It's a known problem, however some have reported that if you rotate the device from portrait to landscape (or vice versa) that it "unlocks" the screen.

It realy helps, thanks!
Did anyone figured out what is the reason of it? Is there a fix?
As far as I know, there is not a fix for it. We are stuck with this workaround for now.
Fortunately, I've found kind of a solution.
I've noticed, that if phone shows you any kind of notifications, display unlocks right.
So i searched an app that will show some. And it works!
For me cure is - "Notification Airtime" app (Free and available in market).
Hope it will be useful.
My compass works in Zdevice test, but not in certain apps (Though it used to) - it doesn't work when I press compass button in Maps and doesn't work in compass specific apps. It DOES work in Yelp monocle.
Any ideas? I've fixed permissions, done clean installs, everything.
One bump before I give up on this. (don't really use compass mode that much, but would be nice to fix)
Try gps status app. It has a compass calibration tool that will tell you to rotate the phone 2-3 times on each axis. Fixed my wonky readings I had.

Just downloaded that - compass doesnt respond at all in that app. It only seems to respond in ZDeviceTest.
It seems like the majority of apps aren't able to "talk" to the compass sensor, but for whatever reason ZDeviceTest can.
Update: I just downloaded "smart compass" and it works fine - Maps will still not enter Compass view. SO CONFUSED
ive had my amaze for awhile. and for the longest time it will not rotate into landscape when im in youtube, camera, or web sites.
everything on the phone is stock and on ginger bread. ive reboot, did the calibration, etc. ive tried every option i could think of. i have not down loaded any games or apps other then what comes with the phone.
finally i down loaded the android sensor app. and it says the "waiting for response" on acceleromter, gyo and another sensor i forgot(maybe GPS). but my map app works fine.
anyone have the same problem or fix?
thanks
I say completely wipe the phone in hboot or update to ics. If issues still occur try rooting and installing a different rom. If still present put back in stock and have it replaced if you can
rotation
I can't remember if it had it in GB but theres an auto rotation setting in settings/display/Auto-rotate screen

I too have had this issue periodically, I noticed that on AOSP ROM's it tends to happen more often than not.
Yes I check ALL the auto rotation settings etc. in the ROM
I end up using Auto Rotate from the playstore when on some ROM's, still a pain in the arse because it will not Auto, I have to select rotate to get it to work
I am now on Viper 1.7.+ and rotation is working again
What's the permanent fix?
Come on all you Genius Dev's, this should be easy for you
Something is missing/being left out of some ROM's?
Autorotate

That autorotate app is in Sense ROM's by default?
And if yes, do you think it can be used with other ROM's?
Is there a workaround or fix to the proximity sensor issue when using CyanogenMod 10.1? It doesn't matter which dialer I use, my screen goes blank and I can't get it back on to use the keypad or hang up.
Thanks in advance.

See if enabling wake on volume helps:
Settings > Display > Volume rocker wake

If you are using a screen protector, there is a known issue regarding placement. If the protector cutout is too close to the sensor, it will interfere with the proper operation of the sensor and blank out the screen too easily.
I ran into a similar issue, turns out the tinting on the screen for the sensors had gotten dirty inside and I had to disassemble my phone and clean the sensor Windows. However if you don't like the idea of disassembling your phone, the HTC rezound proximity calibrator app on Google play might be helpful to you. I would try the app first before doing something more extreme.

I don't have a screen protector. This solved it for me. Many thanks.
That said, the settings I'm using are a little weird. I have the Low set to 81, and it doesn't seem to matter what the High is set to (currently 100).
This fix works

this totally worked to fixed this same issue I have had. I used to have to go outside on a sunny day for my screen to come on while making a phone call. Once I used this app I was able to get it to come on in a dark room with hardly any light. I may at some point open her up and actually clean the inside of the sensor cover, but for now this worked like a charm.
Thanks for the tip.
One item to note, if you do decide to open your phone and clean the sensor windows, don't clean too aggressively or you will remove the tint from the backside of the glass. Just a tip.
I'm glad you guys have gotten your sensors working again.
I just had this problem today. Previously I never had issues with prox sensor, but just a couple days ago I did a complete wipe (data, cache, dalvik, system and internal SD card) and installed RC1 with a fresh install. The app mentioned above DID fix my issue however I know its a ghetto fix. Before running the app, the proximity sensor would work normally in good light, but not in low light. After running the app it works even in dark light which is great. However, I know its a weird fix. I can actually see the red proximity sensor during calls, when I couldn't previously. I'm glad I got it working, but I know there is something wrong still, and it's definitely ROM related as opposed to hardware because just 2 days earlier it worked fine before the clean install. Hmm..

This may be a old solution. But for few days I was very worried with my phone's auto rotation problem.
My phone go into landscape and doesnt come back to potrait mode. In games of gyro it just started behaving wierd. So I started crawling various forums for the solution and many people still dont have the solution.
So here it is.
If your phones rotation is working partly then it may not have a hardware problem it just not calibrated properly.
And that calibration can only be done in gingerbread which I realised after solving my problem.
So I have flashed neat rom 2.3.5 with full wipe(data+caches+system+preload)which u will get in sticky thread.
Thanks a lot sale for the rom.
After flashing go to settings then display then horizontal calibration.
Place your S2 on a flat surface and tap on calibrate.
And magic is done now you can see your rotation and gyro problems are gone.
Now you can flash any JB rom with full wipe.
You will not face those problems again.
If you are still facing than dont bang your head to the wall just take it to the service center.
Enjoy......
