[Q] [Updating Help] CM7 Nightlies - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I recently moved from Team Whiskey's ROMs for the Vibrant to CM7 Nightlie #22. So far have been absurdly impressed with it. However, the next day ( today ), #23 came out.
I've tried glancing around the interwebs for advice on the subject, but nothing is really clear. Tend to have noticed that about CM7, is the help and wiki for it tend to be a bit vague and what not.
Anywho, I'm mostly curious to what is the most painfree way of updating to the newest nightlie? ROMManager Premium or Clockwork Mod method are both known to me. I can easily do either one, but I am more trying to figure out which one would be the less work? Would both methods leave me having to redownload all the applications and restore backups each time I update to a newer version of CM7?

Use rommanager premium.easy as pie.

So no wiping? .....
Sent from My CM7 Monster

when using rom manager prem, make sure u pick vibrantMTd and 3x NOT 2x. And for ur first cm7 nightlie always choose all 3! wipe dalvik, wipe data, backup roms. And when u update ur cm7 nightlie then u only have to choose 2 of the 3 but to be better off always wipe ur first cm7 nightlie.

Movieaddict, I already have CM7 on my phone. Was asking if an update to a newer nightlie had to wipe my phone for each install. I.r. Having to reinstall apps and all, etc.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

u do not need to wipe anything just load on and flash the latest nightly

so if its not ur first nightlie, then u should know theyll aks u if u want to wipe data? yes or no??

Movieaddict, two problems I am getting out of your posts. One, you're contradicting what Kin says, and two, you don't seem to be reading what I am posting.
I said I just went from Team Whiskey's ROM to CM7 Nightlie #22. The next day, #23 came out. I am considering installing it, I know both methods to do so, but my question, and apparently the question of the internet that is so hard to get answered, was if updating from an older/previous nightlie to a newer one would require a wipe and having to reinstall all apps and restore data, etc.
Again, Kin gave a clear answer. But then you contradicted it again.. So.. I'm now back to square one, confused and unwilling to update until I have a better reply. So far you haven't been too helpful. Mind if I get advice from someone else?

Read that quote very carefully! U came from cm7 #22 correct, so if ur updating it and not installing it for the first time then u dont have to do a wipe data. As i say in my quote above in rom manager premium they will ask u to check off 3 things wipe data, wipe dalvik and backup rom as i said before. and if ur just updating to #23 then only choose wipe dalvik and backup rom but i said that already in the quote above from my earlier post. I dont know if i can make it any clearer?

again when u updating ur nightly wiping is not neccesary because all the neccesary info/component is already on ur phone and updating the nightly just only add new things to it so wiping are not neccesary and no all ur data and apps will still be there because ur only updating not flashing an entire new rom

Yes, but as I said. I cannot trust your opinion due to how you didn't apparently read my posts, and contradicted other replies. I'm not going to risk my phone and data on such an iffy set of circumstances.
So, I'll wait until someone else wanders in here and verifies.

people like u make me wanna not wanna help people ur very unappreciative! I made it very clear. Not worth my time...................
You don't have to do anything in life except die. But unless you don't want any headaches, listen to the people giving you advice, they know what they're talking about.

[Q] Update to a new version of a ROM, should I wipe?

I am currently running KaosFroyo v30 and just recently downloaded v31. Should I wipe my phone before installing the latest version of this ROM?
*Note: it does call for a wipe when installing v17 it reads " **THIS IS A WIPE INSTALL** " does that apply to all ROMs post v17?
Edit: I know I should be asking Kaos himself, but I thought I would ask the community first.
If he doesn't say to wipe in between you don't have to... I personally always wipe the dalvik cache before and after I install a new update even if it's not required.
Well, I did what you advised and everything seems to be working out well. Of course I only just recently updated, so tomorrow and Friday will be test days. One thing i have noticed though us that MMS is till not working....
Like Hungry Man said, you don't HAVE to wipe unless the dev says so, but things always seem to be a lot cleaner when you do wipe.
I always recommend wiping.

I always wipe disk and Dalvik.
Only takes a second.
And with Titanium and what not, you don't even have to do anything.
They're making things too easy for us, lol.
You could flash with out wipe then if you have issues beyond known bugs, wipe and reflash.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
If you dont have many programs or apps installed then do a wipe but for me it is a pain in the ass setting it all back up again. So, if it is just an update, then I dont wipe. Sometiimes it leaves scratchy ass, sometimes not
I have always wiped updating to a new ROM, mainly because I didn't know any better. The next update I might update after V31 I might just try a flash and see what happens because I'm impatient when reloading everything LOL.
If it is a new completely different ROM then yes I would wipe.
Installing a new ROM, updating or new, is like talking a shyt. You should probably wipe.

+1 internets. I LOL'd.
most importantly like mom alwayz said , wipe good
Wiping will get rid of all the clingy bits, which isn't always necessary, but I recommend it.

I ended up not wiping (no pun intended) no problems so far. I like some of the little tweaks, but I don't think the track ball lighting is not working

[Q] Can I flash from bionix v5 directly to CM7?

Or do I need to disable voodoo first? Can CWM handle the switch from Bionix v5 to CM7, or should I do it manually. Sorry, my flashing skills are rusty. Haven't done anything since March, but I love cyanogen so I wanna give this rom a shot even if it is nightly.
Thanks!
Yes you can flash CM7 coming from 2.2/2.2.1 and no you don't have to disable voodoo. Read the rom's OP.
if u wanna go to cm7 nightlies plz pick 6-8 and nothing from 9-11 as they have no audio in or out. Now on to the topic if u wanna go from Bionix to cm7 easiest way possible is to get rom manager premium and just download directly from there easy as 1, 2,3,! When u get on rom manager premium flash the new proper clockwork recovery for cm7. I will ask u for ur device u choose vibrantmtd then choose 3X NOT 2X. Then download cm 7 from nightlies and then click yes to backing up rom and wiping dalvik and wiping data. Then when u do ur second nightlie u dont have to wipe data but make sure u wipe dalvik and back up rom and ur off and running cm7! Enjoy.

[Q] Questions and can someone help me install MIUI?

There's all these MIUI apps in the marketplace. I'd need someone to help me with the ROM Installation, though I'd like to learn how to do it on my own. I don't know when I need to update Clockwork, or why I need to, or what commands to execute in it (like clearing stuff.)
MIUI looks great, my cousin keeps talking it up. I have a ton of questions about it, most of which can be answered if I install it and mess around. Is there anywhere I can learn about it? I've looked around http://miuiandroid.com/ but haven't found anything specific.
If anyone can help me install it, we can talk on Google Talk. As for any questions, my main one is how do I edit it? Can I put only three buttons on the bottom bar, like Stock Android?
Anyway, I'm excited to put a new ROM on my phone. Can anyone help?
your best bet is to start in the forum of your device. See of miui is available for it
Does your phone even have a MIUI rom availabe?
In case of your cellphone being supported, it's just flashing over stock or CM7.
If it's available for your phone, it should be on Miui.us
You need to check first if your phone is supproted. Look in the ROM section on miuiandroid.
Then basically what you need to do, is root your phone and install clock work recovery (there will be guides in your phones forums.
Once you have done that you want to create a nandroid backup (you do that by selecting 'backup' in clock work recovery.
Once thats done you will want to wip data, cache, dalvik and battery stats.
Then from clock work click install from zip, point it to your sd card where you have downloaded the MIUI rom) and install it!
Pretty much that simple.

How do I know if my clockwork recovery is up to date? My phone already has been rooted, and my phone is supported by MIUI.
Check out Rom Manager, it will let you know if your CWM is up to date.

What is Rom Manager? Is it in CWM or is it an app for the phone? Or maybe a website
Here is very detailed information on how to install MIUI (or cm or whatever) on a HTC HD2. I don't know which phone you have, so you probably won't have to do steps 1 (HSPL) and 2 (Radio rom), but the other steps should be the same. Just make sure you use the right files for your phone.
The miui website provides install information for every phone too

It's an app for the phone. Helps you install the correct CWM and latest version for your phone as well as download miui, CM7, and many other roms.

I always did that manually through some magic that I never understood as my friend walked me through it. So this app makes it easy? Will it install it from in the app itself?
And once CWM is updated, I just head into it and open the file, right?

yes this app makes it easier. It will update your phone to the latest CWM and also you can download the rom the app.
Once, the CWM is updated. Reboot. And then reboot into recovery (CWM), nandroid (backup your current rom), and then go ahead and wipe data, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache, also battery stats. and flash the new rom (install from zip option in CWM).

Don't wipe battery stats unless you have a full battery and plan on calibrating it properly. It will destroy your battery life.
I see people give this advice all the time, and it's not good advice. Wiping battery stats shouldn't be a part of your wiping routine unless you calibrate each time.

[Q] HELP! my galaxy note is in trouble, the rom is not functioning

i was using Saurom ROM at 1st and it worked perfectly for my galaxy note i717(this was my 1st attempt to root my phone and install a new rom), and i saw a better ics rom ("Onlyone" ics rom) at rootmygalaxynote.com, i flashed the new ics rom into my phone and it stuck at the samsung logo. i tried to re-install the ics rom again and same thing happened. So, i go back to re-install my old Saurom ROM. ^This.
Sounds like you're not wiping properly between flashings.
And don't worry OP. XDA can help you through just about anything!
When flashing a new rom you should being doing the factory reset/data wipe, then wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache. Then flash the rom zip. I would only download roms from the xda post, and the dev usually posts instructions on how to flash it.
To flash the Only1 ICS rom...you must be coming from an earlier ICS build (UCLD3 or UCLC5). If not then this is what you need to do. Flash the UCLE2 leak thru ODIN first. Let it reboot and let it settle for about 5-10 mins. Then Flash CWM via ODIN again. Once that is done...you are ok to flash the Only1 ICS Rom.
You don't have to be coming from ICS to flash OnlyOne. Truth is most Devs have some sort of wipe built in for their ROMs. OnlyOne Dev does not. All you have to do is wipe data/factory reset and then install the OnlyOne ROM. Unless I am wrong, wiping data also wipes cache. Simple as that.
sounds like paranoid anticipation not letting your dv cache and system files build. Since you said both times Samsung logo... I don't think you waited long enough... Plus use flapps first. Then if you wanna have problems to fix, try other roms... In my opinion.
Btw.. Use our development section to get the original content... Not some link from another website redirecting eventually to us anyway.

Your issue is you forgot to wipe. No not that kind of wipe. LOL. Go into recovery (CWM) and do a "wipe data/factory reset". Then install the OnlyOne ROM again.
I responded to this thread that you duplicately created in the general section. Fyi don't create two threads in different sections anymore

when i got the cwm recovery, the 1st thing i did was wipe all data and factory reset, and then i also wipe "cashe"<---wrong spelling probably. and then i went install the rom. anything that i have missed? is there any possible data corruption during the download of the OnlyOne ROM?
Data corruption is possible. You may have also downloaded an older version. Download the ROM again from this forum in the Dev section. There is a thread for it. Do your wipes again first. Then install it again. Let it settle before restoring anything. ROM performs well.
Hey
Just remember that when flashing onlyone rom it's sit on the samsung logo for a while its ok for fist time instal of rom as long as samsung logo is flashing ur fine good luck
