I wasn't aware you could turn noise cancelling off. Anyway If it is very noisy and people can't hear you, then it's a hardware problem with your phone. Mine doesn't do this. Unfortunately your phone is faulty and you will need to get it exchanged or repaired.

I've not had this problem, but from what I read in another thread I believe you can turn it off on a call by call basis. If you press the menu key during a call the option should be there to turn off noise cancelling.
Not sure if you can turn it off all together, may have to just do it each call.

That may be correct, but if the user is suffering loud noise during a call and others can't hear him - that isn't normal and is a hardware fault. It should be fixed.

My Xperia S has been sent back for repair, initially sound quality was perfect (my previous Desire was a bit tinny), but I took a call and had to go into a quiet room to hear the caller.
When making a call the only way I knew it was connected was because of the background buzz, rather than the ringing.
Now on an old Nokia :-(
yeah...same problem here...actually even in a quite room I really have to concentrate in order to understand everything and any back sound is completely eliminated. Example:
A friend: "Hey dude, listen to this song............"
Me: "Sorry...I can only heard your voice...and barely!"
I'll take my device to the Service Support in a few days because of the "yellowish issue" and the "7 hours stand-by battery issue" and I'll take the chance for also ask if this is the "sh*ty earpiece sound issue"

crackling earpiece

when I make a call, the earpiece makes a staticy popping noise. I turn the call volume down and it's still somewhat there but I can't help but think there's something wrong with the earpiece. Do this happen to anyone else?
Does it still do it if you uncheck voice privacy in the dialer settings? That would be my only suggestion.
I experience the same thing. I have to lower the volume to make it go away. I tested my earpiece on other phones (touch pro 2 and iphone 4s) and I don't experience the same static even at the highest level. I suspect that the lte is pushing higher frequencies that some headsets cannot handle. I tried different equalizer settings without any changes. I took a higher quality headset and the distortion goes away confirming my theory. I don't think some headsets can handle the full range of frequencies that the lte pushes out. Does anyone know of any mods that will alter the frequency more than the stock settings?
similar problem, but with playing videos... (at least with some of them)

that seems to have done it, will test it further but for right now thank!
having the same problem, constant ticking noise coming from the earpiece speaker when I make a call, and its only on my end. Tried the solutions mentioned above, still got the issue. No problems with bluetooth or using the speaker phone
I'm having the same issues, doesn't seem to happen on every call. But it only happens on my end where I hear the cracking noise. The person on the other end says I sound fine. Does anyone know I can do?
This is an EVO problem

I have the same problem... sometime it sounds ok, then some call sound like crap! Then I started testing it and found that it happens 100% of the time... just on one end of the phone. If you are having this problem, make a call... If it sounds good to you, ask the person on the other end of the phone how you sound! You will see that one of the two people will have bad call quality, making this a problem 100% of the time!

[Q] Top speaker quality in viber

Hi,
I was using my old Galaxy s3 to call & txt fiance using viber in states, now that I have sold it to mazuma mobile I have used viber to call her for the first time on my z2 & I could barely hear her at all on the top speaker & had to put phone on speaker phone just to hear her , normal call quality is pretty good on mobile calls, volume was up full. She could barely hear me as well, I turned off noise cancellation in call settings & she could hear me a bit better but said it was still quiet.
Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this?
Cheers.
Have you tried moving the phone around on your ear? Sounds silly, but because of the placement of the speakers, its not as natural as other phones i've used imo (or maybe its how tall the phone is). I found the same issue at first, then i moved the phone around on my ear until the speaker and my ear lined up right and the sound was normal.
Yeah mate, moving the phone around my ear was first thing I tried, I don't have issues with normal calls but speaking to her on viber it's almost like the speaker volume is set really low & I could barely hear her at all, since I call her in the early hours I would rather not have to put the call on speaker phone.

Ah okay. I did a quick google search and it looks like its hit or miss for some devices, so it might be on their end. This thread has a Viber rep responding in it to the same problem, or at least a couple months ago he was(no real solution, other than reporting it).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2307492
Also there's an app suggestion in there that a member says helped, and another one would be master volume (i think thats the name). I don't really use Viber, so i'm not much help other than that.
Cheers again for the reply mate, have checked that thread out & also posted in it hoping they will still be checking it, checked the apps mentioned in play store & most haven't been updated since 2011, I do think the issue is like you say more on Viber's end as the volume was fine on my now sold Galaxy S3.
Might have to check out Line or similar apps & get her to do the same as Viber is almost unusable due to this, connection quality was excellent all through the call so I think Viber just need to update or optimise it for the Z2.
Same problem man, here is a fix that worked for me, note 3 international version:

Nobody can hear me!

I've been using this phone for about a week now, and a recurring theme seems to be that everyone is telling me to speak up and that they can't hear me. It's getting frustrating. I never had this problem with a phone before. Has anyone else found that they have to speak up on their Z2?
Is there a soundmod somewhere for this?
Try this. Disable noise cancellation in Settings -> Call Settings -> Microphone Noise Suppression OFF.

oh god dont start me off on this AGAIN ! i have had the same problem ever since i had this phone back in May ! i had a galaxy S2 before this and Never had any of these problems , i could just wedge the phone under my chin hold it where i wanted almost and everybody could hear me . Not with this Z2 . the microphone is crap ! you have to keep the phone so tight up against your face with the mic as close to your mouth as possible. i would also suggest downloading a lock screen app for the phone .. cos otherwise with the phone that close to your face you send keytones down the phone or you put the other person on hold . sorry but i wish someone would build a mod to sort this out ... it drives me crazy there are old threads about call quality on this site

Glad it worked. Sometimes it can also be the case that you're using that's interfering with the noise cancellation (happened to me when I was using a S3).

Had enough !

well i know there are post on the quality of the calls on this phone ( mainly the other party struggling to hear what you say) . i have finally blown my top ! since i first got this phone back in May, this has been an on and off problem. today i made 4 calls this morning 3 of which saying they were struggling or couldn't hear me ! i was so fed up i rang Sony and did a "repair" with PC companion .. made no difference what so ever ! then it was fantastic, i was on the phone to phones 4U, who i bought the phone from, and the lady said "sorry i cant hear you sir" so the phone is going back. to be repaired . im not holding out a lot of hope that this will fix the problem due to the amount of threads where a fair few people are having this problem. seems to be a sub quality microphone on this device
I just had probably my first conversation of any length and not on BT with my gf. She said she couldnt hear me the whole time. I turned off that setting in sound or call menu and that didnt help much. Im disappointed.
Try turning off microphone noise suppression in Call Settings. It helps in a few situations.
I have had the exact opposite problem. I couldn't hear the other party (not on speakerphone) but they could hear me crisp and clear.
I tried that during my call with the gf, she did say it got better but only marginally. Out of my last few Android phones she said this one sounded horrible, specially compared to the M8 I was about to sell. This is probably a deal breaker for me. How do you make a high end phone that has terrible call quality?
I've got the exact same problem with my Z2. The other party cannot hear me when I hold the phone to my ear -- if I turn the call on speaker, everything works fine!
Also, the other party hears a very strong echo of their own voice, but only when the call is not on speaker.
It is absolutely beyond me, how something this simple has gone through the quality checks at Sony. Seriously, a 600€ phone that you can't use to make normal phone calls. Are you serious?
And yes, I also tried turning off noise cancellation in the call settings, did not help really much...
The fact that it DOES work when using the speaker tells me that it is "just" some software bug that should be fixable (and not a defect microphone).
No issues here with call quality, only issues i have is the charger door keeps mysteriously opening in my pocket and that damn screen reacting to metal, same issue, pull it out my pocket and its opened something or removed a shortcut grrrrr

yeah my girlfriend tells me she gets feedback too ! so it DOES seem that this is a regular problem with this phone and its just not my handset ! well the phone is going back .. if its a software issue, then unless Sony update the software it the problem will still be there even if they replace the microphone. i just think that its terrible that expensive so called "flagship" devices can have such basic problems. after all .. its a telephone and your supposed to be able to communicate on a phone !
As I wrote on the other topic I tested with Viber and Skype calls and there is no echo so my opinion is this is a software problem. Unfortunately I have no guarantee and I have to wait for some dev's to solve this problem.

well if it helps , i did post a thread in the developers section asking if any one of them could come up with a "fix" for the microphone issues.. guess it depends on how many of them suffer with this problem .. or have the time to devote to a fix . not knowing if its a software or hardware issue don't help ! all i know is i use this phone to speak to my clients , and when day after day im being told they cant hear me properly or they get feedback and a few have just given up and hung up. i cant carry on using this phone as it is !
