Roebeet said in a different post that Viewsonic has released a press release about the 4349 upgrade and that makes him feel that the 4349 OTA will be re-released at some point by Viewsonic.
I wolud like to read the press release but I cannot find it posted anywhere.
Roebeet, could you provide a link to the press release?
I don't doubt your information at all, I would just like to read it.
Thank you for your help and all your good work.
Anyone else know where to find this press release?
Thanks, Gary
not Roe, but I could only assume that the update will be re-released, since it appears that all Woot tablets are now being shipped with 4349 pre-installed. If they didn't release it, users that never come here could get upset that the newest firmware isn't available to them.
It was back in mid April - they had a notice here: http://www.viewsonic.com/gtablet/news.htm
Initially it talked about the new update, and that it had Flash, the extra languages etc. But 24 hours later they pulled the update, and then the notice a few days later (I actually had something to do with that as I had a VS contact and mentioned that pulling that notice might be a good idea).
I have no idea what their plans are, or why their remaining stock is being shipped with 4349 - this is all a mystery to me. I've personally given up on them and I assume that we'll never see another OTA update. Every time I've called their CS department about 4349, they've given me the gojimi XDA link on how to downlevel to 3588. What a mess.

Can we really assume that this is their remaining stock? It seems that every time we think this, there is another Woot sale, or Tiger Direct surplus that's selling.
Right now, I'd estimate that the G-Tablet unit sales total surpasses iPad's sales by a landslide. These newest tablets were obviously manufatured after 4349 was released, right? That means that they are merely 2 months old, at most. souns like they are still in production to me.

Umm. No. From Wikipedia:
Apple released the first iPad in April 2010, and sold 3 million of the devices in 80 days.[13] During 2010, Apple sold 14.8 million iPads worldwide,[14][15][16] representing 75 percent of tablet PC sales at the end of 2010.[17]
By the release of the iPad 2 in March 2011, more than 15 million iPads had been sold[18]— more than all other tablet PCs combined.[citation needed] In 2011, it is expected to take 83 percent of the tablet computing market share in the United States.[19]
I think the first 'big woot rush' of G-tabs was like 10K.

Yeah, our little tablet buddy is (and always will be) in the minor leagues, sales-wise. However, Woot and TigerDirect seem to have bought most of what was left and a Woot-off is underway now.
I would guess (and it's only a guess) that we are talking MAYBE 60,000 at most. The November run was a thousand, and then the new stock came in but then Staples pulled their inventory. So there was probably a lot of devices sitting on a shelf, somewhere.
The devices from Woot! / Amazon / TD / J&R are probably from the second run, again that's my guess. And, at some point in the last two months, someone made the decision to put 4349 on them - I assume to get Flash pre-installed. It's much easier to do that using a process like nvflash versus someone physically installing it on each device manually. I doubt very highly that these new devices are actually two months old, or newer - more likely they are from December / January.
Flash was promised.
One of the reasons for my original question was that Viewsonic's web site promises official Flash support "anticipated sometime in May" and May has already passed. (The web site does not say May of what year).
If I remember right Flash Player Logo was shown as supported on the box as sold by Viewsonic through Sears, Office Depot, and probably at Staples although they were already pulled before I bought mine.
It seems like this would be a good case for a Law Firm to look into and should probably be a class action law suit.
Now I wonder: When will this official Flash support be available?
From their web site!
"Adobe Flash Support:
The Viewsonic gTablet hardware fully supports the Adobe Flash Player. An automatic firmware update will offer gTablet users the option to install the Flash Player plug-in, and is anticipated in May, 2011.
Advanced users may download and install Adobe Flash Player available here. Access the download link from your gTablet browser to install directly to the device. For best performance, make sure to fully power down and reboot the system before accessing Flash content.
(Please note that ViewSonic cannot provide technical support for unofficial installations of Flash players. We will fully support the Adobe certified Flash Player when it is released for the gTablet.)"
If 4349 has been pulled, what future OTA will allow the option to install the Flash Player plug-in, and where is that support?

Thanks for the link. I remember when the site still had the reference to 4349 even though the OTA had already ended.
I thought maybe there was a seperate press release.

I had forgotten that it wasn't supported except with 4349 -- that's true. So, seven months after I purchased my Gtablet, I still don't have a stock ROM that has an "official" Flash version (not counting 4349 since I could have easily missed that update - 24 hours isn't a long time).
"Anticipated" is the key word, on their site. Don't think that wasn't added accidentally - gives them leeway to delay things yet again.
Here is a fun act. On the support page, where it says software update back in April there's a link that's called "please see news for more info". If you click on that link, it takes you to the news page where the gtablet software update link takes you back to the support page. Look at the parts of screen shots that I took. The top part is the support page and the bottom is the news page.
That's because they don't care.

It looks like latest TNT Lite (retired ) does not require to instal CWM in order get TNT Lite run.
Does it mean gtab warranty will not be void?
Does it mean going back to original firmware much easy?
Does itmean you can apply 3588 on top to TNT lite the same way we did on top to 3589 in order to get it vanilla?
TNT Lite is based on original android 2.2..?!?
Does it mean it use all hardware properly ( like HD video hardcoding, light sensor, camera, home buttons, etc.)?
Honestly, I would call Viewsonic / US Merchants and ask, and here's the reason why -- initially, I would have told you "yes, it voids the warranty".
However, their CS department has been using gojimi's downlevel update.zip for users on 4349 who are complaining about high-def video playback (which is a problem on that ROM). I have confirmed this TWICE. So, in effect, they are suggesting a hacking solution to fix a problem -- I actually called them a few weeks ago and asked them flat-out if this hack was supported and they told me "YES".
So, in you are concerned about your warranty, you should ask them directly because they seem to be picking what they will support, hacking wise.
Could please someone clarify for me what is build 4349? I got my Gtab a few weeks ago and it came with 3589 and instantly offered update to 3588 no more updates and notifications. so what is it 4349 and should I try to get it or not?
4349 was a firmware update that Viewsonic / US Merchants offered for 24 hours, back in mid April. It was a major update in that it updated the bootloader on the device to a newer development branch. This was their first "1.2" based ROM, and you'll see that terminology scattered throughout this forum ("1.1" being the old branch, and "1.2" being the newer branch).
The 1.1 branch and 1.2 branch do not play nice with each other - stock to stock updating is fine, but when using clockworkmod, the device will soft-brick. So we've seen a lot of issues with this here, and on Slatedroid.
Even though 4349 was pulled, there are reports that the new devices from TigerDirect are being sold with 4349. And 4349, although it has some good enhancements, is buggy. In particular, it has sleep issues, battery issues and also high-def video playback issues. So, when someone calls Viewsonic / US Merchants customer service to complain about that, their department has actually been directing users HERE, to gojimi's downlevel script. That's why I said "voiding the warranty" is a tough question to answer, because the vendor themselves are picking and choosing what they consider to be supported. So, I would say that it's best to ask them, directly.
Roebeet, didn't you say back in April you called them and they directed you here and then when you asked them if doing any hacking would void the warranty they said yes?
Seems pretty cut and dry to me. They are directing people HERE because they don't know anything about the gtab and they have no official support for the gtab. On the other hand, they have to keep their policy that any modding = voiding warranty.

I actually got into an argument with their CS area - that was the same week that they flipped over to the new CS department and dropped the Saturday hours. I was told by a person who works at Viewsonic themselves that the actions of the CS department were not correct and would be dealt with. This was in mid April, right after 4349 was pulled.
However, and I will be very blunt here, Viewsonic has either purposely done NOTHING to stop these actions, or is somehow unable to - I don't know which it is. I called the their CS area two more times, asking how to fix 4349 video playback issues. And both times I was given gojimi's XDA link. The last time this was given to me, which I believe was mid-May, I flat-out asked them if they would support me if this ROM from a known hacking site bricked my tablet, and I was told "yes". Maybe they were just yessing me to death, to get me off the phone. It's certainly possible.
What does this all mean? I think it means that one hand doesn't know what the other is doing. Before mid-April, I had a certain level of trust with Viewsonic that they were supporting us and would continue to support us. But after the CS area switched over, my feelings on that slowly changed to the point where I just don't trust anything they tell me anymore.
I know Viewsonic actually used to scan these forums and when I made comments like this, they took it serious enough that they actually PM'd me (this actually happened in March). But I don't think they're doing that anymore - I don't think they honestly care about the device in any way. I think they've abandoned it and just want it to go away like a bad dream. I would be nice for them to chime in on why USM is still offering up gojimi's downlevel ROM as a way of backing out of 4349 and saying that it's supported - but I don't think they will.

You have a guess as to why they never cared for the gtab? They have sold more gtabs than pretty much everything else they got.
Hello, I've never owned a tablet of any kind but decided that I want one. After doing some research I found the Viewsonic gtablet as one that is in my price range. I've read about the good hardware, and the modding required for the software so I understand the work required. I've done extensive work on my desktop, so the modding doesn't worry me.
My biggest concern is that the reviews go from really bad to really good. Is this tablet worth it once you do the required modding?
Thanks, appreciate the input.
the tablet is completely worth it, in my opinion. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the Gtablet...
that being said...I have nothing good to say about Viewsonic. They have let us down every chance they get. We asked for updates in April...they gave us one, then pulled it a day later (that lead to the 1.1 vs 1.2 bootloader issues). We requested that they enable us to run gingerbread or honeycomb with the proper drivers. They told us that it wasn't possible. Nvidia told us that if the "hardware partner" requested drivers, that they would support it. Just reently, though, Viewsonic claimed that they DID request drivers from Nvidia, but that Nvidia claimed that they wouldn't support our hardware past Froyo. SO, who is to be believed, Viewsonic, or Nvidia. the jury is still out on that one. I've asked Nvidia to confirm whether or not Viewsonic requested anything from them, and whether Nvidia erally did deny the request.
There is no evidence that Viewsonic is working on an update to their still crippled stock firmware. There is no evidence that Viewsonic handles any customer service or technical service requests in house. They've basically tried to sweep the Gtablet under the rug and abandon all of it's users.
So, in conclusion...i love my Gtablet, but in no way would I ever recommend that anyone buy anything from Viewsonic, considering how they've treated their customers.
I recommend the ipad to everyone I talk to. That's just a personal rule I've come up with.
That said, if you decide to get the vs gtab, please visit my website linked in the signature. All necessary files are either provided free or linked to the necessary sites. A donation would be nice, but it's entirely of your choosing. The most important thing is to follow my instructions down to the letter.
The gtab is still alive because of the developers working on the rom, like this xda forum...viewsonic has basically throw them away
XDA DEVELOPER FTW
Well, the gtab is still quite popular. I received a brand new gtab as a gift and put it up for sale on amazon. Within 1 hour, I had a buyer. So, there are still lots of people who want it. If you think about it, it's still a perfectly good piece of hardware. The problem is those damn corporate dumbasses from viewsonic who couldn't look past their own corporate jets.
All we've asked for are the damn drivers and they won't even give them to us.
Thanks for the opinions. I'm not in the market for an iPad due to the price. It's hard to justify that amount for something that is a luxury rather than a necessity.
I'm going to take a look at picking up the gtab, especially since it's on sale again.

Really, if an iPad 2 is out of your price range, then the G Tablet is a great introduction to the world of tablets. There is a wide range of excellent custom ROMs for it.
For me, the only major feature that is lacking is video calls with Skype. Otherwise, for casual Web browsing, watching Netflix, and other common tablet-friendly stuff, it is a great option at a great price.
I today received the ZTE Open C and I have to say it is a wonderful phone. There is one really irritating thing about it though. It is branded.
Whenever you lock the phone instead of displaying the wallpaper it displays the blue wallpaper of the Firefox, no matter what wallpaper you are using.
So for the people who know Firefox OS well: Is there a way to change this?
what release is running on ZTE Open C?
could you do a short review of the device, and more importantly, where did you get yours so early?
ZTE is sending out the ebay orders starting May 23rd...
not that i am interested in buying one, as i have the 1st Open, and i'll wait for better spec devices like the Alcatel Fire S,
but i guess it would be interesting for one or other here?

I saw the pre-order for it on Ebay on the 3rd of April, so the ship date for me was a lot earlier. It wasn't even linked on Google I just searched for it on Ebay and by chance it was there! Firefox OS 1.3 made by ZTE, and so far it's very good, apart from the problem I have mentioned. I would like to note that there is an app on the phone called "Software Updater" with "Update Device" "Update History" and "Update Frequency" options... I believe this means they are going to keep this updated. I'm using my ZTE Open for testing, and my ZTE Open C for main use (because of the larger screen)
Google ZTE Open C to find the ebay page, all the info is there, I would review it but I've only had it for a day so far
yeah, i would not bet on them supporting this one longer.
as it seems the Open is not supported anymore.
they don't answer questions about this.
Mozilla does not really answer questions about this.
so that is in my book a pretty good sign they wont support it.
lame.
still on MDN as a "developer" device.
how on earth should you "develop" if you can't update the frekking phone because the HAL is missing for newer builds?
thanks a bunch! 80 Euro wasted on a piece of crap phone that isn't worth more than 30USD to begin with.
being "early adopter" sure doesn't pay off here.
you get crappy hardware for a high price.
i pitty all the people who actually bought a geeksphone keon for 150USD (same low hw specs as the Open)
enough rambling, hope to see your review soon?

I'm sorry to dissapoint, but after using it for a few days there isn't enough different to review. There's the Firefox OS 1.3 which we know well, basically no lag at all and everything opens really quickly. The keyboard allows you to type really fast and still be accurate (this could be due to the 4 inch screen). The speaker is a little bit better and is on the front so you don't need to turn the phone around if you're listening to music, there is an update app on the phone which guarentees updates. The update option through the settings has been removed. It comes with a few of what I can only assume are ZTE's wallpapers but none of them have a logo or anything and most are quite good.
My only problem with the phone is that the lock screen never and will never display your wallpaper. It always shows the blue firefox wallpaper even if yours is different. I emailed ZTE and they said the "Firefox System" added it not them which I assume means the official Firefox OS 1.3 carrier build.
I hope this changes, because it's ugly. Other than that the phone is really good.

First and last ASUS product I will ever own. Took them over five days to give me that answer and not to mention the delays with little to no communication on why and pretty much having to beg them for meager status updates. Signs of a badly run company.
My main gripe with ASUS is the lack of customer communication they use. When you go to their forums, 'ASUS_Bill" gives vague responses and nothing more than that. Their lack of communication with their customers is enough to drive me away from buying/using any of their products in the future.
If one person can build 2.0 for the large version (with minor battery issues), then why can't ASUS' team build their version faster? I played with the homebrew version we had here and it was quite stable, just chewed my battery up, but it gave me a good taste of what 2.0 will bring in the future for the watch.
Like, why have to choose between Ubuntu or Android, when TWRP-based recoveries, like Safestrap for example, come with ROM Slots?
because its probably very hard to make a custom phone, best to first see if theres a market for it and try to even out, let alone make profit... , is it worth the effort and money invested?
Once they succeed, then they can be more creative and flexible with what can be offered.... who knows, its possible 90% of users on this forum are just leeches who demand things and never actually give back, im hoping thats incorrect.

I think it should be possible to dual boot any A/B device as long as the userdata can be a polyglot.

10 odd years ago, I bought my first Android phone. It was an HTC Evo. I discovered xda-developers, found all the CyanogenMOD ROMs, etc. for that Evo, and never looked back. In 2012/13, I 'upgraded' to a Samsung S4 and didn't bother to root it, and I've 'upgraded' hardware many times since then. There was always that; 'Why am I doing this?!?' thought, in the back of my mind...but, I needed a phone to get the job done.
So, here we are in 2020, I have a Samsung S9 that works, that I bought a little over 2 years ago, but...it has Android 10, with the Samsung embellishments, but won't see anything other than security updates going forward. About this time, 10 years ago, I bought an Asus laptop. I don't recall which version of M$ Windows was installed (according to the sticker, it was Windows 7 Home), but that's irrelevant because; A) Whichever version was installed is now obsolete, B) The day after I brought it home, it was running Gentoo Linux. This got me to wondering WHY I couldn't have a cellphone that 'just works' for more than 2.5-3 years, AND was 'current!'
I was all set to pull the trigger on a Pixel 5, through my carrier, reasoning that it was the 'flagship' of the Google line and, despite the ho-hum specs, would be supported longer than the <insert OEM here> phone. Then the ALL About ANDROID podcast (twit.tv) mentioned the Pro1-X phone in TWO consecutive podcasts! That piqued my interest! As of yesterday, I ordered a Pro1-X, with the LineageOS. This is MY way of giving back to those developers that provided me with the ROMS that I downloaded, installed, and used years ago...
ALL of my computers run a version of *nix! Hopefully, I'll be just as happy with my Pro1-X (I may upgrade to the Debian offering, if available) when the phone arrives! :fingers-crossed:

Completely agree with the sentiment here. I purchased my Pro1-X (XDA edition) with the hopes that instead of chasing the next flagship every year, I will finally have a phone that I can optimize and update myself, and , more importantly, a phone that is secure and can run Ubuntu Touch.
