It would seem reasonable that you could buy a replacement power supply for a current product from the manufacturer wouldn't it? Start on Viewsonic's web site. Try using the store - ha-ha. Now call the number. Get referred to another number. Call that number - get referred to another number. rinse and repeat. Go to their website to the gtablet page. Read call this number 866-501-6405 for anything you need. Get referred to another number call that number - get referred to another number - rinse and repeat. Get frustrated - call their corporate headquarters in Wlanut, CA. Ask for the name of the president so you can send a letter. Get told they can't give it to you for security reasons - but it is on the web. Get hung up on. Sadly, I really like my g-tablet but this is an awful company to deal with. I wonder what will happen if I need a replacement battery - will I be told to go to Radio Shack to find something that fits (like I was told to do for the power supply)? I'm really enjoying the g-tab but I can tell you that when it comes time to replace it, it won't be with another Viewsonic product. Anyone can sell you something - it is how they support it that separates the good companies from the bad. I feel better posting this and maybe someone has had a better experience but looking at the struggles here to get power supplies and docking stations, I'm going to guess that no one has much good to say about dealing with Viewsonic. Surprise me!
Unfortunately I will have to agree. Since day one the support has been far less than you would expect. There have even been times when they have referred to XDA to help out. Basically US Merchants buys from China, Viewsonic buys from US Merchants, and no one really know who's supposed to support it. I will have to say that's the beauty of open source and some of the people that are here. More times than not you can get support right here if you don't mind doing a little digging. I've only been playing with android's for about 8 months now and know more than I ever needed or wanted to all because of XDA.
But honestly, isn't that the way we've become accustomed to support? No one ever calls Microsoft anymore, we use Google.
It's truly a shame that you can't get a straight forward answer when trying to replace something so simple. I apologies on behalf of the business owners that still give a s**t.

That is because half the tech notes for MS are "Can not be found" when it comes to errors and such
Google search allows you to reach out to users who no these things first hand. That is why I always make a point if I can not find an answer to a question, even on line and I finally figure it out myself to post it somewhere so someone else can be helped by it.
I did that here on XDA and getting ADB to work on my win 7 64bit system. All the help was on 32b this and that. I finally figured it our myself and wrote a tutorial for others that "will" need it.
Viewsonic is a very big company that is dabbling in android based tablets that at least with thegtab did not design. I would also argue that the cost/price is such they don't really know where this is going.
same with all the other tab makers save on, the apple. Think about apple's model with iTunes, what I call a consumption model. They can actually give away the ipad at cost because they can get it from the model.
now in order for company's like viewsonic to compete they need to provide all accessories and have a hook. We know from the official viewsonic Rep that they are thinking about some kind of development site, makes no money and meanwhile Steve has to bring in accessories because viewsonic dropped the ball. So yes, basically unsupported. A lot cheaper for the hardware though.
I don't see another development site as a good thing. Viewsonic needs to spend its energies on marketing the apple way or just stick with monitors. Maybe they look at the gtab as a monitor. But we know that can't be because the screen is not in usual viewsonic quality. I'm sure they saw the ztab as quick entry and OEM'd, it.
I've got to agree..
I've been trying to find a source for the mini-vga cable for the ViewPad 10. Support told me to go to Best Buy. When I pressed them on exactly what to purchase they admitted they did not know and that Besy Buy probably did not carry them. Support handed me off to the parts dept.
Parts pointed me to a cable designed for the Viewpad 100, which was a product released in 2001. When I asked if he was sure if they cable would work, he said "probably". When I noted the website said the product was 'out of stock' he said "order it anyway, that will tell us we need more". Since the conversation did not exactly instill my confidence in the parts dept I did not order the $20 cable.
I'm still looking for a mini-vga cable for the ViewPad 10 if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Granted that they inserted their queries into on-going threads. And also granted that they probably blew right past the video and this form’s norms when they registered. But no one even attempted to help them. Their questions were simply ignored.
This Aluratek (same folks who did the Libre for Boarders) is a rebranded Chinese tablet. Or perhaps being kinder to Aluratek you could say they spec’s a tablet and had it manufactured in China becuasue there are a few differences between the Cinepad and what is sold in China.
This tablet is currently being sold by Newegg, Tiger Direct, Walmart, Sears, Barnes and Noble, Amazon, etc. So this forum is likely to see an increasing number of questions about them
It appears that rooting the Cinepad may be as simple as running the program Unlock Root against it. (free at http://www.unlockroot.com/)
The base tablet that Aluratek modified slightly to come up with the Cinepad is the Yongxiang company’s YX 10A03. The 10” Aluraek lists its Model number (Settings->About Tablet) as YX 10A03 and shows a build number of ics.f33ref.20120329.
The Unlock Root website lists as tested devices two unbranded MID tablets both with model numbers of YX 10A03 and both with build numbers of ics.f33ref.20120XXX – within a few hundred of the Cinepad build.
I would be quite surprised if Unlock Root did not do the trick

I was hoping that someone would have a try at a custom rooted rom actually, because the firmware that Aluratek provides is basically unstable. I won mine from Quibids, and before the first week it had lost its mount points for the internal sdcard and of course my external sdcard. They provided me with a beta firmware that fixed that, but before I could really test it, the power button broke from the board. I sent it back, and here about 2 months later I now have a replacement tablet (definitely not the same unit). I find that the firmware on it matches the beta they had me flash the first tablet with, however this thing is definitely unstable. They told me it would have video issues, and in fact the Youtube app (no version I have it seems) will work on the thing. Well... long story made short, I am about to reflash the thing for about the 7th time tomorrow. It likes getting into boot loops for no discernible reason, and then seemingly comes out of them (sometimes) for some unknown reason also. It frustrates me to no end to have to reboot it, but it is necessary at times since it loses mountpoints for the sdcards just like the first one did originally from time to time. Rebooting it clears it up... that is unless it decides to start looping. Its kind of like a slot machine... never know when it will win or lose.
I am not complaining. I won it at a good price off of Quibids... and Quibids very generously provided me with an Archos 80 G9 to replace it... even though they knew that Aluratek would get around to sending me a replacement... eventually. So, no complaints here. But, it has become kind of a challenge for me. Its kind of hard to believe that the Archos and the Aluratek retails for about the same... since there really is no comparison in quality and stability. I have become an Archos and a Quibids fan.
Rooting it alone is not enough... the firmware itself is unstable. I wish I could find something that was halfway stable because I think it will be some months before Aluratek gets something past beta. It is actually not that bad of a tablet and this firmware gives it a lot of memory to work with. It has beautiful video and bright colors and a pretty good resolution. It has a mixture of good to average hardware, but not really what I would call cheap really. The problem is the firmware mostly... and a very badly designed power button that will break off very easily if you aren't really careful. I mean, it has built-in bluetooth... its not a bad deal if it would just be stable.
I was hoping that someone more experienced than I am would take the challenge since so many of these are being sold right now. I am only now becoming more familiar with the inner workings of Android. I have a fair amount of hardware and software experience mainly in PC's, but until this year have never gotten into Android. Now, I somehow have 4 tablets all different sizes and brands, and each have their own points and quirks. The Aluratek is the quirkiest. If anyone knows of a custom "stable" firmware for this tablet, I would appreciate the help. Thanks.
Thank you SerialQ

Rooting the Aluratek Cinepad brought such a dramatic change in making it stable for the first time, I just had to come back here and thank you for the tip on this Chinese program. It is a "tad" confusing since it mostly Chinese (outside of the word ROOT - pretty self-explanatory), and had a little trouble since the thing shut down at one of the reboots instead of rebooting. I found another set of instructions that said you have to let it reboot 3 times before it is finished. I had to help it by pushing the reset on the 3rd boot and then starting it, but it worked and now the tablet is sound and zooming right along. I have a presentation tomorrow and I am thinking of using it instead of my Archos.
Thanks once again... that was a great help to me.

Hi firesorm005,
i´m really glad that i was able to help you. In fact i had the same issues (including the broken powerbutton) with my yx 10a03.
since i rooted the device it is also running, except of the WIFI, stabel now.
If you like, you can try some build.prop tweaks to give the device more perfomance and optmize the power-savings.
you can find many tutorials when you google for it.
Use them with care and as always at own risk
have fun

I have an Aluratek Cinepad 7"
I got my Win7 machine to recognize the tablet, but Unlock Root couldn't ever find it (tried all 3 types of USB connections).
Then I tried ZhuoDaShi Tool, but the screenshots at the techrepublic link were different from the app (looked like the same app, but different version). I clicked every button on the app, but wasn't able to find one that would lead to actually doing something to the tablet.
Anyone have any new ideas?

So, I just bought this tab and it'll be here on Friday compliments of J&R by way of Amazon. It hasn't any ratings (probably because it's new) and I don't see ANY threads for ROMs for this model or ANY Aluratek model for that matter.
The specs are INCREDIBLE for this price point and PERFECT for my tablet needs/desires. However, I'm quite concerned about the lack of dev support. While I know this model won't EVER be a highly purchased item because of the off-brand, it does have a common A9 Cortex processor that many other higher-end tablets are outfitted with. I must be looking in the wrong places. Does anyone have any links to share?

I managed to root my AT110f using Rootburner-v0.2, using the second advanced option. When the program wants to reboot the screen goes black and will not come back on, you have to press the reset button first as the power button is dead. (you have to do this 3 times on the rootburner app)
My Tablet is now fully rooted.:good:

Distinguished leaders marketing HTC,

We do not understand your approach knowing that this product has one year old! From a customer relations standpoint, it is totally outrageous.
There may be a technical problem because the Developers are most certainly the height to solve some technical problems. If it turns out that this is a business decision, we think this is a huge mistake and that it wrong in the sense of logic, why private that a better enchant owners.

People...HTC is not obligated to provide us anything besides basic hardware/software support. They are not required to give us a upgrade, heck they aren't even required to give us bugfixes. When you buy a tablet or phone you are buying it with the current software load, meaning you need to make sure you are happy with what it runs and how it runs. Can we PLEASE stop beating this horse?

Hello,
It's your perspective and you've made, it is!
This is not the generality of people who think that, already after just seven months of existence, it simply removes purtement and the evolution of the tablet, this is not normal.
They are not obliged to provide it to us for free, okay, at least that we are proposing an alternative to évolution.
Knowing that the products were sold frozen and for the typical person, not necessarily easy to change OS as two shirts!
If you can afford to buy every two weeks, good for you and too bad for us ...

@thewadegeek:
As far as I recall, there is some kind of agreement between Google and the main manufacturers to give proper support/updates for products for at least 18 months after its initial release.
Now, as the HTC Flyer has been released < the mentioned 18 months I expect HTC to honor that agreement.
And please do not forget that the HC update was rubish and should not be called an update but a downgrade (as some features do not work (as well) as they did before).
If you would own a car, and for some reason they upgraded some kind of software @ the garage which resulted in non functioning blinkers/signal lights and you had to put your hand out of the the window everytime you are about to switch lanes or make a turn in order to warn the other drivers about your actions, would you accept that? I WANT MY HARDWARE BUTTONS BACK!!!
Everyone is free to make his voice heard and if you don't like topics like this one, than please .. by all means .. stay out.

First off I LIKED the upgrade, so you can't make a blanket statement calling it rubbish. The pen support with Honeycomb is pretty slick and I enjoy it. Second that's not a valid comparison, in that case they removed REQUIRED functionality, in this case they just replaced it with something else. And if you want your hardware buttons back then downgrade, or install Lee's Honeycomb. Viola. Your last statement is TOTALLY contradictory friend, first you says we can all make our voice heard, and then you tell me to stay out. Also the purpose of a forum is for discussion, you all seem to just want people to agree with you. I'm just getting tired with everyone starting a new petition or "HTC sucks" thread. If you feel betrayed then deal with it, HTC has done nothing legally wrong so everyone is stuck.

Lol. ( its just Google translate)
To all:
Something is not happening right. We are arguing on wrong issues. Some points I noticed and I would like to emphasise upon are:
1. Yeah they gave us honeycomb. But its not perfect. Chiefly the internet browsing experience. Internet is the soul of computers, tablets, smart phones, ipads etc. and we need a solid browser to experience it, which is not there. It leaves a lot to be desired considering:
a. Flyer has 1gb ram, a powerful processor, 1 GB system ROM, Enough Internal Memory
b. Initially it was sold for exorbitant price (700$+, though mine 32 gb, 3g cost $390)
c. It was told by Google about an year back that all devices should be supported till 18 months.
Yeah, flyer has beautiful features like pen, hd cams, srs, mhl out, brilliant screen, top battery. But it lacks a solid browsing experience. In my view what the majority of us want is a solid browsing experience. Now that comes with a HC update or ICS update will not matter to me.
Many people are talking of broken GPS. If its really broken, then its HTC's duty to repair it, not the developers'. If its not broken, we should forget about this issue. Now if someone says it requires just a change in config file to repair it, I agree to it but this small repair forces you to root and risk bricking.
On another note of doctorlirio campaign: he should not have raised the issue of GSM calls with HTC. HTC didn't give us calling functionality, xda did.
So, why we are always wanting better? Because it has become our need and habit to stay ahead and overcome the weaknesses of our devices. We can't stand any weakness in our devices. And for me, a solid browsing experience is my primary need where my flyer doesn't satisfy me fully. Whether its HTC or developers, we always want better for our devices.
( though opera mobile works a little better in browsing, but sometimes ( may be often) it also fails to function perfectly on high load web pages.)
Lastly, I feel that, its a little too late now for us to keep chasing HTC. ( though HTC is to blame for a weak internet browsing experience and those who paid exorbitant sums for buying this are even more right in blaming htc)

I came to that conclusion today about Web browsing actually. I wanted something that would be as useful as a laptop and Web browsing has never been stellar on it. And the best Android Web browser isn't available on it!
Senseless helps with browsing big time but unfortunately I still find myself grabbing the laptop and getting frustrated with the browser when I need to get something done.
As for everything else its perfect but the one thing I bought it for is its greatest weakness. I didn't buy it expecting any update, but I was hoping we'd get ics to fix the Web browsing. Web browsing is fully gpu accelerated in ics and my phone whether I'm running chrome or the stock htc browser is pc quality. The flyer is more akin to my old captivate.

Primarily verifiable need for it to work. But since I now possessed no other tablet, I quickly found that my root right for certain things missing for recreational use. To use the Sixaxis app for example.
So I wanted to ask here if maybe a developer have already dealt with it, to root the device.
Would be really happy.

It's pretty much a Raw Android Tablet and should work with anything in the play store. No one seems to be looking in to doing anything with this tablet since it's so expensive and it's made for such a specific use. I asked questions about it for months and no one acknowledged me about it.

I find it unlikely that anyone who owns it has tried rooting the CCH yet, Myself included. Of course, I am tempted to root it, but I wouldn't do it until I am sure I can restore everything in case it messes up. The android system recovery that comes with the tablet has no commands for the user, so even a custom recovery would be required to backup/restore. It's not exactly an easily replacable tablet, and the device is quite expensive after all. The reason I am tempted to root is not related to wacom and their tech at all, but once you have root, you end up wanting it across your devices. Unless you want root for a specific app, and unless you're ABSOLUTELY sure that app can benefit from the cintiq, I wouldn't take the risk that comes with trying to root.
That said, you will not be disappointed with the tablet without root, it really is a cintiq on the go, as well as a Tegra 4 android tablet. Really rock solid performance, excellent battery life( I actually did clock 12 hours straight on high performance), and pretty much pure android without any fancy changes.
Maybe I'll succumb and try to root someday, but that's a remote possibility. Unless I end up damaging it somehow, and replacement seems inevitable, in which case I'll try it before replacing.
This is Wacom's reply to an enquiry about rooting: http://forum.wacom.eu/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=15901
This is a nearly two-year-old thread, but now that I have my own CCH thanks to a bit of luck on eBay, I should report that yes, you CAN root it!
Wacom's complete negligence in updating it does have one benefit: towelroot still works due to the old January 2014-dated kernel, but you need towelroot v1 and not v3 as currently offered on towelroot.com. I figured this out when I looked up other Tegra 4-based systems and how well towelroot worked on those.
From there on, just let SuperSU update the binary, and then you're good.
I feel like this is just the beginning of figuring out how to update the CCH to a recent version of Android, since Wacom themselves have been even less than useless with properly supporting it during its lifespan and have now discontinued it with no pretense of further support. @aniruddhahar, you with me here? We both know what this thing's capable of if they'd just updated it past Jelly Bean, and with Android N on the horizon and finally baking multi-window into base AOSP, the timing couldn't be better!
This is indeed some heartening news, thanks @NamelessFragger ! The CCH hardware checks out to run at least lollipop/marshmallow, and frankly I'd be happy to even get past Jelly Bean to KK or Lollipop. However, the problem is the role the CCH plays at work. It's easy to replace a smartphone or a tablet, but a damaged Cintiq could mean 1000-2000 USD for replacement. Having said that, I'll be trying to root it at least. But unless we get some info about the hardware switch from android mode to desktop mode, I find it doubtful that we may be able to upgrade the device while still retaining the Cintiq capabilities which are vital to any CCH artist using the device in daily production work.
Also, I cannot find links to the v1 APK of towelroot anywhere. Could you please upload it here?
I wonder if this news should also be shared on the Wacom forums...
@aniruddhahar: I figure that's one of the major reasons the CCH dev scene is nonexistent - the likelihood that anyone who is willing to pay well over $1,000 for one of these things depends on it working reliably and without issue to make a living. Not only would it be expensive to replace, but the downtime until replacement is a major setback to an artist's livelihood who needs it to work.
It's not a toy - it's a tool, and one that can do something that almost no other tablet computer can do nearly as well as it does.
However, while Wacom doesn't feel like handing out the source code that would reveal whatever kernel modifications they made to make the monitor mode switch work, I have a feeling that with enough effort, we could reverse-engineer their implementation. The Tegra 4 sources for other devices like the NVIDIA Shield Portable is already floating around out there, and that could be a potential launching point for an updated Android ROM, even if it might take a while before we get the monitor mode switch going. We might even have pen digitizer-related sources from Samsung's various Galaxy Note products that may also help to a limited extent, differences in digitizers aside.
There's more important things to tackle before any custom ROM efforts, however, like getting a custom recovery set up so that we can easily flash Nandroid backups and future custom ROMs.
As things currently stand, I haven't seen Wacom put out any ROM images and PC-based flashing utilities like most other Android manufacturers, so unless your idea of a recovery is hard-dumping the NAND with an eMMC reader and hard-flashing it with a known good dump if your system becomes unbootable, tread carefully.

any safe links to towelroot v1?
did you try v3 and it failed?
I am a dev... In fact, I'm working on a custom filesystem at work right now. I have a CCH and like many.. I find it difficult to look at knowing how awesome the hardware is and how Wacom abandoned it. I was doing everything with this unit... movies, video games, video conferencing, etc. I read comics, and holding the unit vertically makes for an excellent digital comic book experience.
It is, quite frankly, the best tablet experience I've ever had. And it's sitting there on Jellybean.
How close are we to pulling he trigger on a GPL violation submission? I understand they've "lost" the source?
bumpity bump bump
Would really like to see some progress here.
Did someone actually root the Hybrid with towelroot v1? Did we ever hear back from Wacom on getting the source?
They shut their forums down, unfortunately. This is really the only other thread on the internet discussing the cintiq hybrid. Such a shame.
-toad
I rooted my Hybrid last November, but I didn't use towelroot, so I can't speak to that method. I used KingoRoot v1.4.2 for PC. It's been a while (not to mention the long parade of root tools/apps that failed before that), so I don't remember exactly, step-by-step, how I originally did it.
In the hopes that this might help other Hybrid owners, I've scoured my Hybrid and computer for any related files, zipped them and posted a link below for posterity.
EDIT: Unfortunately, I mostly lurk here, and the site won't let me post outside links until I have at least 10 posts--which I don't--so I had to get creative with the urls. :\
Files I'm including:
KingoRoot Apk v1.9
com.kingoroot.com-2.apk
KingoRoot v1.4.2 for PC
android_root.exe
KingoUser Apk v2.0.5
KingoUser.apk
Kingo Android Root.url
The files are provided AS-IS. I make no guarantee that they won't blow up your device. If your device explodes into a barrage of radioactive shrapnel, I am NOT responsible. These files worked for me. They may not work for you, and I have no idea if newer updates work either. Your mileage may vary.
**TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK**
So... Doom and gloom aside...
dracolusus.com/xda-developers/devices/cintiq-companion-hybrid/cintiq-root.zip
You can visit KingoRoot's website here:
kingoapp.com/android-root.htm
I think I installed the PC program first, plugged the tablet into the comp, and the program pushed KingoUser.apk (SuperUser) to the device. I'm not sure about the KingoRoot apk, though; I may have downloaded it from the play store separately either before or after rooting, or it could have been pushed by the program too, but I don't remember now.

I got my Companion Hybrid about a year ago, and was astonished that Wacom didn't even try to provide updates for the Cintiq. I love the thing, but there is no immersive mode, the notification bar crashes the UI sometimes, and whatever background I have set will reset to the default jelly bean one after about a week. It's infuriating that someone could put so little effort into providing stable software, but still lock out people who are willing to put the work in.
When I called Wacom's support about getting root access, the guy who helped me just said its not possible, that there will be no updates ever, and that Wacom no longer supports the Companion Hybrid at all beyond the 1-year replacement warranty.
My biggest complaint of all is that when the tablet is in Android mode all the hardware buttons are pretty much useless.
This is all just a big rant I guess, but I would LOVE to see this thing running Android 5 or 6. This tablet has so much untapped potential.
Slightly off-topic but CCH owners are very hard to track down and Wacom forums are down so cannot ask there. I recently acquired a CCH by pure luck but the previous owner reset it before sending and that wiped some fix to the camera that he had applied which means when I open camera app in Android mode it shows 'Cannot connect to Camera'. He swears there was a fix for this which he can no longer find.
I don't want to send it back but just trying my luck here to see if anyone knows of this issue and the possible fix? When connected to PC, the front camera works fine with Skype with notification blue LED and all..
Sorry if it is the wrong thread but since my new thread will probably not catch you attention I thought I will post here.
Thanks.
I wasn't aware of any camera issue, since my camera has always worked fine. I got mine second hand off e-bay, though, so maybe its original owner applied the fix. I didn't pay too close attention to whether or not it had been reset before being sent to me; I was more focused on getting it rooted.
I did a quick google search for the issue, but only this thread and some post about the Surface Pro camera app came up. If you could post some more info about it, I'll see if I can find any useful files on mine.
Hopefully, a more experienced user will grace us with their expertise...
Camera never worked on mine, any camera or gallery app just crashes. I got it off eBay on July 2014 and it was factory reset when I got. Did some firmware update using Wacom settings app but didn't fix camera.
As for original question: KingRoot (kingroot.net/tutorials) worked perfectly for me.
Me 2!
if anyone ever figures this out- please please email me! I use cch as my daily work tool and so disappointed from day one on the android mode. Thought I would be able to use it as a bring home, over coffee at Starbucks, hotel lobby art pad; but instead its locked in at work, poorly connected with its craptastic matrix like cable system, nearly immobile.
need to crack this egg [email protected]
I realize this is a bit old, but for anyone looking to do this, New King Root works just fine.

A month ago I sold all of my tablets and have bought the Wacom Cintiq Companion Hybrid.
Primarily verifiable need for it to work. But since I now possessed no other tablet, I quickly found that my root right for certain things missing for recreational use. To use the Sixaxis app for example.
So I wanted to ask here if maybe a developer have already dealt with it, to root the device.
Would be really happy.

Any progress? I found this thread a few years ago and have waited for it to update lol
I've basically had mine since release, neither camera worked. It just crashes.
I still don't trust KingoRoot after all the reports of stealing IMEIs and other such data. towelroot is proven, and I'll toss up a Dropbox link for you all if needed. It's actually taken from an archived version of the site anyway.
http://web.archive.org/web/20140616011907/http://towelroot.com/
Both of my cameras work, though neither are particularly good in the image quality department. Not sure what to say there regarding the camera app crashing.
Also, I apologize for being many months late to this, but ever since the Wacom forums went down and this thread got buried, I didn't think I'd get in contact with the CCH community at large again:

I tried v3, and it failed. v1 worked.
I've had no updates on the source code situation over these past few months, so consider that trigger pulled, even if they've lost the source.
Anyway, let me reiterate my findings, many of which are going to make development on this a pain:
-There is no fastboot mode. Seriously, I have yet to find a way to get it to work, because the usual adb commands don't work. It may not even be present. Because of this, I don't even know if the bootloader's locked or unlocked. We can only pray it's the latter.
-APX mode is present like you'd expect on a Tegra device (assuming ExpressKeys on left, hold the top two buttons down while powering on until the status LED flashes red), but without a proper image to use with Nvflash, it's of no use. I doubt Wacom has such a recovery image to give us in the first place.
-The stock recovery is the most useless stock recovery I've ever seen! Your only option is to hit the center rocker button or the power button to reboot normally, as there's no menu.
-Backing up the boot and recovery partitions is trivial with Flashify, or more recently, FlashFire once you're rooted. What ISN'T trivial is just unpacking and repacking them consistently, such that the repacked version with no change to the contents is identical to the original. Maybe I just haven't found the right tools yet.
-I have not tested any attempts to reflash the recovery partition yet. Compiling TWRP is a bit in over my head, especially for a device without proper kernel sources, and the CWM Builder site's long dead. TWRP has no equivalent. At least you don't have to worry about things like getting Cintiq mode working in recovery, which should simplify things should we have to resort to using generic Tegra 4 sources.
-NVIDIA's dropped software support for Tegra 4, so it doesn't have official kernel/driver/whatever code updates for Android Marshmallow onward. Porting the latest Nougat over may prove even more troublesome as a result, and it's already confirmed that the Remix Ultratablet (which uses the same SoC) won't be getting RemixOS 3.0 officially because of it.
The cards are stacked against us, but nevertheless, I still feel this is one piece of hardware that deserves some community support since Wacom let everyone down on updates.
I would like to know how to root the new SKYSTREAM THREE PLUS ANDROID TV BOX if someone can please give me any instructions
So I'm assuming you never found how to root this box? I'm looking at buying one and need root for simulating keyboard/typing input.

Did you try any of these methods?
https://www.xda-developers.com/best-one-click-root-2018/
Looking to do the same thing did you find a root method that worked?
I do believe they are rooted before they are delivered. They have magisk manager installed but not up to date. If you do a factory reset you will lose the root for some reason. I am still researching this and trying to figure it out so I can get play store installed again.
If you didn't notice, the installed PS was at version 12 or there abouts and will not upgrade. The newest version right now is around 21. Even though they say this box is PS certified, it in fact is not.
If I figure out a way to root this again I will post here. But I don't want to mess it up too much as this is my primary media center.
I did finally get my root back. Not quite sure how. But it was after a second factory reset. Magisk manager has the root on these right out of the box. So have a look for Magisk app and open that. If it says something about this version is out of date, then you will need to update it of course. There are many other tutorials online to help you from there.
Edit: do not update magisk. Use the one supplied and get root back that way.

I don't know about the pro. It looks like they might be running some hacked version of Android TV but I can't confirm. I did hear that the native Netflix and Prime app won't play 4k so I assume the pros are also rooted.
My 3 plus has a hacked Android 8 on it out of the box. I actually put it aside for the last couple of months because I purchased a shield. They have an actual licensed Android TV version 9 installed.
I hope this winter to get some down time to mess with the SS.
In my honest opinion, I wouldn't purchase from them again until they decide to actually install a licensed/certified Android on their box.

Yeah I just checked there mate, the fookers have refunded the payment saying due to current situation delivery won't be another 6 weeks so I've to order sooner lol.
Think I will just buy a shield instead.
With regard to skystream I read that they're keeping their new super doopwr os locked down in secret.
Apparently due to amlogic factory guidelines, but obviously we now know its because its running cloned unlicensed firmware itself. Cheeky buggers
A refund is good in this case. For sure spend the little extra and go the shield route.
If you join the SS/Elite mods (if you look carefully one of the admins of Elite is actually listed as the owner of SS) facebook group they 1000%, under no circumstances, state that you should not factory reset their box. That to me is a head turner.
Why shouldn't you? Because it messes up the magisk root that they install on each and every box and they aren't going to send you support for resetting it. Unless you pay 35 American for them to remote into your box and fix it for you.
On the 3 plus I tried everything to upgrade the playstore from version 12. Yes! It was stuck on version 12 and could not install an upgrade. I have another Android box that isn't certified but the PS actually updates.
For me it was a lesson well learned. I fell for their boasting, hook, line and sinker!

Jeez man :crying: Ive done some researching since I ordered and don't really like what I'm reading about the company itself support etc, I also know the 3 is more or less a clone of another amlogic device after a dev successfully decompiled the firmware .. Check this out:
https://forum.freaktab.com/forum/tv.../776697-rom-skystream-3-plus-updated-20190630
So I wonder if the new Pro 8k is gonna be a clone of the new x6 or something similar with a slightly higher cpu/gpu freq? If theyre charging $35 to go through your router via teamviewer or anydesk they must be desperate to keep a lid on it.

Wow! Thanks for posting that link. I will have to download it. I actually removed Playstore off my 3 plus and after a a full reset it never reinstalled and I can't sideload it either.
The new pro they just released is an amlogic chip as well. I don't know all the specs right off hand atm. But looking at their website, it looks to be some version of Android TV. Unless they made the launcher to look like it. I assume the latter. I have already seen from their fb group that people are complaining that Netflix and prime will not provide 4k as promised. Also that Play store won't update either app since it is not certified. You have to update those via aptoid.
Their fb group is also locked down that the admins have to approve all the posts. That sounds to me that they got tired of people complaining about legitimate problems with their boxes. That doesn't stop some people from going off topic on some of the posts though and it does happen from time to time until the admins clean those off.

I just contacted them yesterday, I asked if new box will come with magisk, he said no as it is original signed version of android tv, so I said bummer.
I asked what to do about adblocking etc as I usually use adaway on the root #. In the next breath he said adaway will work as the system comes "sort of pre-rooted"
Well its not original version of ATV then I'm guessing?
He said theyre using a non mobile version of android so they weren't sure how magisk would be implemented or if it would play nice with /system...
So I think what we have is a clone and this is why they're not disclosing firmware,
The box seems to come with a root of sorts already in place.
I reordered it anyway as I want to see what it's like.
I asked is it true you cannot FR the box and they said they are working on this.
That's rather worrying, I wil post review of this box and some board photos once it arrives but I'm being told it won't arrive for another month or two.

Would be interesting to hear for sure.
A non-mobile version of Android? Oh but its an original signed version of Android TV? Sounds to me like they are praying on people whom don't know any better.
So I will be assuming my guess earlier is correct. Cobbled up Android with a launcher built to look and act like Android TV.

I finally got a chance to flash the rom from the freaktab forum. Works great! Thanks for that link for sure! Now that I know that works, I am going to try to flash a different Amlogic ROM to see if that works!
Since I had the time, I also decided to try and flash my Sky Stream 3 Plus with a rom from
https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...m-xtmod-atv-x96-max-gt1-u211-devices-t3892273
They have an Android 8 and 9 version.
The version 8 worked great! Seemed to really run smooth for the half hour that I tested it. The launcher looks like the Android TV that I have on my shield. Just a few customizations missing.
Went ahead and tried the Android 9 mod supplied there and working so far! Gonna run that for a bit and see what happens.
Once again the Android 9 supplied by xannytech looks great! I will have to install an app to tell me if for sure this is running androidtv for sure. When setting up it actually stated that it was.
I also see that Chromecast is built into both of these versions as well! Instead of the SS3plus garbage that never seemed to work!
So I did download the backup rom from that link. It worked pretty good! I messed with it for about an hour to see how it worked and didn't find any noticeable flaws. Thanks for that.
I then flashed the android 8 from one of the threads here and messed with it for a half hour before I realized there was the android 9 available. I am currently running that and have for the last week. Runs good enough that I moved it into the bedroom. Only thing I can't figure out is what root app to install so I can get a few apps, like an auto off to run correctly.
Just changed the cec to see if it will shutdown when the TV kicks into sleep mode like my cheap mygica used to do for me.
Edit... guess I am replying to myself... lol

Not a chance, I bought two of these things for customers and they assured they were rooted. When allot of apps that need root wouldn't install I checked to see if Magisk Manager was installed, (another bs line they sold me).
