Rooting the Aluratek Cinepad AT110F - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A couple of posters have asked about rooting the Aluratek Cinepad tablet

Granted that they inserted their queries into on-going threads. And also granted that they probably blew right past the video and this form’s norms when they registered. But no one even attempted to help them. Their questions were simply ignored.
This Aluratek (same folks who did the Libre for Boarders) is a rebranded Chinese tablet. Or perhaps being kinder to Aluratek you could say they spec’s a tablet and had it manufactured in China becuasue there are a few differences between the Cinepad and what is sold in China.
This tablet is currently being sold by Newegg, Tiger Direct, Walmart, Sears, Barnes and Noble, Amazon, etc. So this forum is likely to see an increasing number of questions about them
It appears that rooting the Cinepad may be as simple as running the program Unlock Root against it. (free at http://www.unlockroot.com/)
The base tablet that Aluratek modified slightly to come up with the Cinepad is the Yongxiang company’s YX 10A03. The 10” Aluraek lists its Model number (Settings->About Tablet) as YX 10A03 and shows a build number of ics.f33ref.20120329.
The Unlock Root website lists as tested devices two unbranded MID tablets both with model numbers of YX 10A03 and both with build numbers of ics.f33ref.20120XXX – within a few hundred of the Cinepad build.
I would be quite surprised if Unlock Root did not do the trick

The standard one click root tools arwn´t working for the BUILD ics.f33ref.20120409.
It took me a couple of weeks to find the ZhuoDaShi Tool at tabletrepublic.com/forum/downloads.php?do=file&id=145
it worked for me.

I was hoping that someone would have a try at a custom rooted rom actually, because the firmware that Aluratek provides is basically unstable. I won mine from Quibids, and before the first week it had lost its mount points for the internal sdcard and of course my external sdcard. They provided me with a beta firmware that fixed that, but before I could really test it, the power button broke from the board. I sent it back, and here about 2 months later I now have a replacement tablet (definitely not the same unit). I find that the firmware on it matches the beta they had me flash the first tablet with, however this thing is definitely unstable. They told me it would have video issues, and in fact the Youtube app (no version I have it seems) will work on the thing. Well... long story made short, I am about to reflash the thing for about the 7th time tomorrow. It likes getting into boot loops for no discernible reason, and then seemingly comes out of them (sometimes) for some unknown reason also. It frustrates me to no end to have to reboot it, but it is necessary at times since it loses mountpoints for the sdcards just like the first one did originally from time to time. Rebooting it clears it up... that is unless it decides to start looping. Its kind of like a slot machine... never know when it will win or lose.
I am not complaining. I won it at a good price off of Quibids... and Quibids very generously provided me with an Archos 80 G9 to replace it... even though they knew that Aluratek would get around to sending me a replacement... eventually. So, no complaints here. But, it has become kind of a challenge for me. Its kind of hard to believe that the Archos and the Aluratek retails for about the same... since there really is no comparison in quality and stability. I have become an Archos and a Quibids fan.
Rooting it alone is not enough... the firmware itself is unstable. I wish I could find something that was halfway stable because I think it will be some months before Aluratek gets something past beta. It is actually not that bad of a tablet and this firmware gives it a lot of memory to work with. It has beautiful video and bright colors and a pretty good resolution. It has a mixture of good to average hardware, but not really what I would call cheap really. The problem is the firmware mostly... and a very badly designed power button that will break off very easily if you aren't really careful. I mean, it has built-in bluetooth... its not a bad deal if it would just be stable.
I was hoping that someone more experienced than I am would take the challenge since so many of these are being sold right now. I am only now becoming more familiar with the inner workings of Android. I have a fair amount of hardware and software experience mainly in PC's, but until this year have never gotten into Android. Now, I somehow have 4 tablets all different sizes and brands, and each have their own points and quirks. The Aluratek is the quirkiest. If anyone knows of a custom "stable" firmware for this tablet, I would appreciate the help. Thanks.

Thank you SerialQ

Rooting the Aluratek Cinepad brought such a dramatic change in making it stable for the first time, I just had to come back here and thank you for the tip on this Chinese program. It is a "tad" confusing since it mostly Chinese (outside of the word ROOT - pretty self-explanatory), and had a little trouble since the thing shut down at one of the reboots instead of rebooting. I found another set of instructions that said you have to let it reboot 3 times before it is finished. I had to help it by pushing the reset on the 3rd boot and then starting it, but it worked and now the tablet is sound and zooming right along. I have a presentation tomorrow and I am thinking of using it instead of my Archos.
Thanks once again... that was a great help to me.

Hi firesorm005,
i´m really glad that i was able to help you. In fact i had the same issues (including the broken powerbutton) with my yx 10a03.
since i rooted the device it is also running, except of the WIFI, stabel now.
If you like, you can try some build.prop tweaks to give the device more perfomance and optmize the power-savings.
you can find many tutorials when you google for it.
Use them with care and as always at own risk
have fun

I have an Aluratek Cinepad 7"
I got my Win7 machine to recognize the tablet, but Unlock Root couldn't ever find it (tried all 3 types of USB connections).
Then I tried ZhuoDaShi Tool, but the screenshots at the techrepublic link were different from the app (looked like the same app, but different version). I clicked every button on the app, but wasn't able to find one that would lead to actually doing something to the tablet.
Anyone have any new ideas?

So, I just bought this tab and it'll be here on Friday compliments of J&R by way of Amazon. It hasn't any ratings (probably because it's new) and I don't see ANY threads for ROMs for this model or ANY Aluratek model for that matter.
The specs are INCREDIBLE for this price point and PERFECT for my tablet needs/desires. However, I'm quite concerned about the lack of dev support. While I know this model won't EVER be a highly purchased item because of the off-brand, it does have a common A9 Cortex processor that many other higher-end tablets are outfitted with. I must be looking in the wrong places. Does anyone have any links to share?

I managed to root my AT110f using Rootburner-v0.2, using the second advanced option. When the program wants to reboot the screen goes black and will not come back on, you have to press the reset button first as the power button is dead. (you have to do this 3 times on the rootburner app)
My Tablet is now fully rooted.:good:

No USB connection workaround

For those who cannot connect to a PC via USB I was able to connect to my AT107F by using PDAnet and then root it.

Best Buy sales claims they have a revised Prime now

Went into the local Best Buy and they mentioned they can order a new Prime on their store terminals, but you can not order on line yourself (strange). They showed me on a terminal and the part number changed from an "A" suffix to a "B" on the product code. It is also treated as different product inventory.
I was told this is the new revised Prime, but I seem to recall this version mentioned in the forum already (could not locate), but was an internal design change and not the unicorn known as a revised back panel.
Best Buy can order one and showed me an order they did for a customer a few days before (waiting to be picked up). They would not open it, but I was hoping the unicorn really did exist.
possibility this could be true. Waiting to hear back details on these C4 models. most I've seen posting, that has the new C4 model said theirs work great. No wifi/BT dropout and wifi works fine. even posting internal GPS works well and maintaining lock while driving. there was only 1 person who said their GPS didn't hold the lock but majority, I've seen, said it did.
we'll just have to wait & see what can be found out about any revised prime or the c4 models.
I have one on order from Best Buy's warehouse that should be in the store for me to pickup today or Thursday. I will report back in this thread as soon as I get it and do some testing.
All I want is the Wi-Fi not to dropout while streaming audio over Bluetooth. GPS is not really an issue for me, but it would be a bonus if that worked too.

I will check in to this today, but it is the first I have heard about it. I don't know of any revised part number.
I can tell you that we do have the most Prime inventory on hand we have ever had and they should all be C4 serial numbers at this point.
Addendum: I am comparing the part labels on my BCOK and C3OK and there is no difference in part numbers, model numbers, or listed features (GPS still listed on C3).
The only difference are the serial numbers (obviously) and the check number.

Maybe its finally time to rma my bcokas model
If only i wasnt out of the US right now, i'd go trade mine in.
Most likely they are changing the internal SKU they use to order the prime and instead of stocing them on shelves they will special order them or order them from their wearhouse... Invintory seems to be a big issue, im told that there is still a greater demand than supply in the GTA (canada).
I have been looking but have yet to see a prime on shelves in any store in my area. Seems to be lots of 300's available tho, maybe because its easier to manufacture? who knows, Asus sure as hell doesnt.
Perhaps the TF202?
or the TF300?
i dont know
im actually hoping to know if a TF202 prime with 3g/4g wil be available

I seriously doubt it is revision. If we have a design change (internal or external).. which is a "revision", that requires Asus to file with FCC I believe.
So, this "revision".. at best.. will be either new "parts" or "components".. at most.
Btw, I've seen about 5 to 6 ppl commenting about purchasing C4 & of those 6 people.. one have commented on the "same" issue that we are facing with previous versions. I think it's foolish to conclude after 6 people that C4 versions have rectified the issues.... or didn't rectify the issues.
So, until we know or see Asus rectify the design flaw (re-adjusting/positioning the signal antenna & few others... & change of metal backplate)... I can only assume that we'll continue to see Prime's with issues. Just, for the sake of Asus.. I hope with each versions.... it comes with less issues & their QC has improved.
Btw, I do remember during the GPS Dongle leak... Hai Trat's email mentioned.. & advised potential Prime purchasers to look for C3 & C4 version as they have less issue (or without issue) compared to previous versions. That means ..
1. They haven't completely come up with a solution.. as we'll continue to see Prime's with issue due to DESIGN FLAW
2. He didn't mention anything about "revised" Primes.
we know only what the people with these newer models are reporting. all of them except one, that we've seen so far said their devices work well and suffer no wifi/bt dropoff issue & thier wifi works great. even internal gps. we even had Erusman, who created the opening up of prime thread, said his newer model C3 has no bt/wifi dropoff issue. SO the chance is very high that something is different about these newer models, especially c4 ones.
I'm going with the optimistic/realistic view considering what c4 owners have stated so far. You would think Asus corrected the issues somehow. Plus it doesn't even matter if it has to go through FCC again. It could have and we just don't know about it. That's if it even had to. the GPS dongle had to go through FCC also yet no one knew about it, at least from FCC standpoint. Its FCC file was never reported or found, initially. So its possible any new changes could have been made, went through FCC, and released. No one is obligated to tell us and tech sites do miss FCC scoops alot also. So it isn't like if it did go through FCC again, we would automatically know about it.
What i do know, from what i was told, is that They narrowed the wifi problem down to some not being assembled properly & some having a faulty 2nd. wifi antennae. Out of all the reported RMA, for wifi issues, a very small number had been found to have a "REAL" problem. I do know the numbers but is not needed to state. So it could be possible these newer models have a more critical eye & better quality control on them. Meaning they working and assembled like they are supposed to. Maybe that in combination of newer components or something. So anything thing is possible really. Its all speculation but with majority of known reports on new c4 model being good, things look good.
I will know details about this C4 model shortly and if any changes were made and what they were. I'm just waiting for the reply on that info. So it could either be a slight internal design change or they just have a more critical eye on the quality control so devices assembled like they supposed to. Either one would be good on Asus part.
plus something else alot of people may not know, there are actually two variants of tegra3 floating around in prime models. This was discovered by a developer and confirmed by me when i showed him the info on the different tegra3 variants. The early model primes use the AP30H variant of tegra3. the newer models all use the newer T30 variant of tegra3. this is not the same one in the 300 , as the 300 uses the T30L. This was all proven by developer here through coding of several different devices. Early and late models. I'm also waiting on info on why was the tegra3 versions changed up mid production or so. What are the benefits of the newer T30 variant that made them switch. Developer did say that older variant(AP30H)has better battery life and newer variant(T30) can take higher clocks/voltages/etc.. This all was discovered when developer, Motley, was making new changes to custom kernel and different people had different results. Some had the new kernel working and some didn't. since the kernel was made for an assumed universal tegra3 version. So the developer, I think it was Motley, added in a script or something to determine which tegra3 version you have and make adjustments on the fly as needed. So now his kernel produces desired results on either tegra3 version. There is a way to tell which version you have but you have to look in his thread for the how to.

This really bugs & annoys me. I have a lot of problem with your statement (not towards you, but if anything.. completely directed towards Asus). I think it is fairly obvious (perhaps due to your bias towards Asus) that you have become the unofficial Asus spokesperson in this forum. They continue to respond to your question (btw, I am thankful one SOME info. from you), it boggles my mind how Asus continues to respond to your "questions" & yet, those with RMA issues (too many to count) .. and other various issues are just.. "waiting".
Anyways, few problems I have your statement:
1. You are concluding after 5 or 6 people. To conclude or state after such small amount of "pool" that issues are fixed/rectified/resolved is rather foolish & extremely dangerous. Now, I understand your optimism & belief in Asus (one aspect that was constant with you since the launch of Prime) but I think it is "fair" to warn & state that NOTHING is known, and take extreme precaution if you were to purchase Transformer Prime.
2. "Real" issues with WIFI is based on ASUS standard. Whatever that is... If they are basing their judgement based on their standard, I think it is fairly easy to create certain % or whatever to favor ASUS. For example, Gary Key's interview with CNET & the #s he gave....
I have ****TY WIFI on my Prime (no way am I going to RMA the device with all the crazy Asus RMA stories). But if I were to RMA, and ASUS finds my ****ty WIFI performance (based on my standard) acceptable due to whatever this standard they have... I think it is fair to say this whatever # or % you got from them.. is "tainted" to favor ASUS.
We have multiple reports of those who RMAed their PRIME because WIFI sucks, and when the device was returned.. it was still "CRAP".
So, we can say.. either our standards are high (based on comparisons with our own device)... or Asus standard on WIFI is really low, broad, and general.
3. And lastly, I HOPE ASUS does resolve the issue. Also, I hope it performs to.. or on par with many other devices without so much annoyance that certain individuals most go through to make PRIME acceptable. Btw, I will check FCC everyday just for you...

I have the Prime C40, I posted on a different thread,I bought it on 5/5/12 from Best buy this is my fourth Prime and as I said in my previous post I can use bluetooth without wifi drop out and I took an 8 mile trip with GPS lock all the way. I have been using it at least 3 hours a day and not one drop out on wifi. I ran with GPS again today at 60mph stayed locked for the 4 mile trip to work. As I said in my other post this is how the Prime should have been from day one! I hope all C40's will be this way so I can get the Asus bad taste out of my mouth. I wont go into the RMA process on the 3rd one.

I agree , for the most part. It isn't a conclusion made but good speculation made. You are right, Nothing is ABSOLUTELY known yet about newer models. which is why i stated POSSIBLE scenarios. Prime issues are nothing new so no real need to "WARN" people as most coming into here already read about them. They know some have issues and alot don't. This can be said for any newly released device though as they all have their issues. Like the new ipad, new 3oo, new Acer model ,etc.. Its all a working process and all have issues reported about them so far.
For your first part, its not that serious. I'd say just let it go..lol Its not like the way you make it seem. if the roles were reversed, I'd be glad/grateful that someone could at least try to find out more info and relay to the community on it. Especially if its info not released yet. plus it doesn't have to be taken as gospel. all things should be taken with a grain of salt.
I knew when i didn't answer your other similar question you posted before in another thread , this would pop back up...lol let it go, its not that serious.

I wont go into the RMA process on the 3rd one.

this is one of the ones i was speaking of. Me along with others are very curious to see if there really are any differences with this newer model.
Until I see a video of said newer models performing the way it should (which we haven't, wifi/bt they still complain and still most have huge dropoff), they're just like all the others- hit or miss. I can say I'm the King of the Britains too, see how that works?

You might be correct about "hit or miss" If i'm correct the C40 should be the April 2012 model, and if Best buy is getting a supply we should start seeing more comments about them shortly. The city I live in was dry of the Prime for months now all of a sudden they had 12 on Saturday maybe they feel confident to produce more. Just a thought.

MPI9082 (MTK6515?) android phone

Creating new thread as I can't find any references to Android MPI9082 / MTK6515 (Chinese phone sold on eBay).
I like the the phone hardware, but will have to return it if I can't get rid of the crap that's loaded on it.
The model is.. not sure:
Under battery it says: MPI9082
Under Settings->About Phone> Model Number says MTK6515 (but that could be just S/W thingy).
Looking for any info or experience ppl have had with this phone hw (root and flashing sw). I'm willing to help as much as I can (in past I've successfully re-flashed 3-4 android phones thanks to this forum).
I bought this phone for my 14 year old kid, soon after setup/power up she got first notification with inappropriate content (porn) all in Chinese. Installed Lookout, opted out of AirPush... made no difference. Seems the sw has embedded ad-ware that can't be removed - need to re-flash. For the time being phone is locked in my desk and not usable.
Any experience with this phone out there ?

I have bought an MTK6515 Chinese phone too. These are no-brand phones, so the brand name hardly matters. Mine is running Android 4.0.5. Has one malware pre-installed, called Flashlight. That's the one popping up porn site notifications. Since it's installed at factory, I don't have the rights to either disable or uninstall the application. The only way out I see is to root the phone. Unfortunately, all the rooting effort seems to be focused on big brand name phones! If I had enough knowledge I would address this problem myself, but until then, I'm just hoping that one day somebody will post some reliable way to deal with this.
In some other threads Super OneClick and the like have been suggested but the original posters have reported no success and then the threads died. I have not seen any successful thread so far!

Thanks for your response.
The phone is being shipped back to china. Seller did not respond to my request for rooting or re-flash procedure. He/she agreed to refund $$ including return shipping.
If enough ppl start complaining and start returning these phones, perhaps then they'll stop loading these phones with this cr*p.
On the other hand, selling these type of phones via Ebay appears to be violation of Ebay policy, these phones could be (or should be) categorized as adult items and should be sold under such category. I can send the policy link/quote if anyone is interested.
I'm also surprised that there are so many positive feedback entries under the seller...
Good luck with your phone and I hope you are able to root/reflash the phone soon.
I think I'm done with "android" phones from china.
As for my 14 year daughter, I was able to acquire Nokia 710 windoze phone for her, she is happy with it so far - but misses her old/broken samsung android.

[Q] Root for Wacom Cintiq Companion Hybrid

A month ago I sold all of my tablets and have bought the Wacom Cintiq Companion Hybrid.
Primarily verifiable need for it to work. But since I now possessed no other tablet, I quickly found that my root right for certain things missing for recreational use. To use the Sixaxis app for example.
So I wanted to ask here if maybe a developer have already dealt with it, to root the device.
Would be really happy.
sorry for my english, my best friend is google translate

It's pretty much a Raw Android Tablet and should work with anything in the play store. No one seems to be looking in to doing anything with this tablet since it's so expensive and it's made for such a specific use. I asked questions about it for months and no one acknowledged me about it.

I find it unlikely that anyone who owns it has tried rooting the CCH yet, Myself included. Of course, I am tempted to root it, but I wouldn't do it until I am sure I can restore everything in case it messes up. The android system recovery that comes with the tablet has no commands for the user, so even a custom recovery would be required to backup/restore. It's not exactly an easily replacable tablet, and the device is quite expensive after all. The reason I am tempted to root is not related to wacom and their tech at all, but once you have root, you end up wanting it across your devices. Unless you want root for a specific app, and unless you're ABSOLUTELY sure that app can benefit from the cintiq, I wouldn't take the risk that comes with trying to root.
That said, you will not be disappointed with the tablet without root, it really is a cintiq on the go, as well as a Tegra 4 android tablet. Really rock solid performance, excellent battery life( I actually did clock 12 hours straight on high performance), and pretty much pure android without any fancy changes.
Maybe I'll succumb and try to root someday, but that's a remote possibility. Unless I end up damaging it somehow, and replacement seems inevitable, in which case I'll try it before replacing.
This is Wacom's reply to an enquiry about rooting: http://forum.wacom.eu/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=15901
This is a nearly two-year-old thread, but now that I have my own CCH thanks to a bit of luck on eBay, I should report that yes, you CAN root it!
Wacom's complete negligence in updating it does have one benefit: towelroot still works due to the old January 2014-dated kernel, but you need towelroot v1 and not v3 as currently offered on towelroot.com. I figured this out when I looked up other Tegra 4-based systems and how well towelroot worked on those.
From there on, just let SuperSU update the binary, and then you're good.
I feel like this is just the beginning of figuring out how to update the CCH to a recent version of Android, since Wacom themselves have been even less than useless with properly supporting it during its lifespan and have now discontinued it with no pretense of further support. @aniruddhahar, you with me here? We both know what this thing's capable of if they'd just updated it past Jelly Bean, and with Android N on the horizon and finally baking multi-window into base AOSP, the timing couldn't be better!
This is indeed some heartening news, thanks @NamelessFragger ! The CCH hardware checks out to run at least lollipop/marshmallow, and frankly I'd be happy to even get past Jelly Bean to KK or Lollipop. However, the problem is the role the CCH plays at work. It's easy to replace a smartphone or a tablet, but a damaged Cintiq could mean 1000-2000 USD for replacement. Having said that, I'll be trying to root it at least. But unless we get some info about the hardware switch from android mode to desktop mode, I find it doubtful that we may be able to upgrade the device while still retaining the Cintiq capabilities which are vital to any CCH artist using the device in daily production work.
Also, I cannot find links to the v1 APK of towelroot anywhere. Could you please upload it here?
I wonder if this news should also be shared on the Wacom forums...
@aniruddhahar: I figure that's one of the major reasons the CCH dev scene is nonexistent - the likelihood that anyone who is willing to pay well over $1,000 for one of these things depends on it working reliably and without issue to make a living. Not only would it be expensive to replace, but the downtime until replacement is a major setback to an artist's livelihood who needs it to work.
It's not a toy - it's a tool, and one that can do something that almost no other tablet computer can do nearly as well as it does.
However, while Wacom doesn't feel like handing out the source code that would reveal whatever kernel modifications they made to make the monitor mode switch work, I have a feeling that with enough effort, we could reverse-engineer their implementation. The Tegra 4 sources for other devices like the NVIDIA Shield Portable is already floating around out there, and that could be a potential launching point for an updated Android ROM, even if it might take a while before we get the monitor mode switch going. We might even have pen digitizer-related sources from Samsung's various Galaxy Note products that may also help to a limited extent, differences in digitizers aside.
There's more important things to tackle before any custom ROM efforts, however, like getting a custom recovery set up so that we can easily flash Nandroid backups and future custom ROMs.
As things currently stand, I haven't seen Wacom put out any ROM images and PC-based flashing utilities like most other Android manufacturers, so unless your idea of a recovery is hard-dumping the NAND with an eMMC reader and hard-flashing it with a known good dump if your system becomes unbootable, tread carefully.
towelroot v1
any safe links to towelroot v1?
did you try v3 and it failed?
I am a dev... In fact, I'm working on a custom filesystem at work right now. I have a CCH and like many.. I find it difficult to look at knowing how awesome the hardware is and how Wacom abandoned it. I was doing everything with this unit... movies, video games, video conferencing, etc. I read comics, and holding the unit vertically makes for an excellent digital comic book experience.
It is, quite frankly, the best tablet experience I've ever had. And it's sitting there on Jellybean.
How close are we to pulling he trigger on a GPL violation submission? I understand they've "lost" the source?
bumpity bump bump
Would really like to see some progress here.
Did someone actually root the Hybrid with towelroot v1? Did we ever hear back from Wacom on getting the source?
They shut their forums down, unfortunately. This is really the only other thread on the internet discussing the cintiq hybrid. Such a shame.
-toad
I rooted my Hybrid last November, but I didn't use towelroot, so I can't speak to that method. I used KingoRoot v1.4.2 for PC. It's been a while (not to mention the long parade of root tools/apps that failed before that), so I don't remember exactly, step-by-step, how I originally did it.
In the hopes that this might help other Hybrid owners, I've scoured my Hybrid and computer for any related files, zipped them and posted a link below for posterity.
EDIT: Unfortunately, I mostly lurk here, and the site won't let me post outside links until I have at least 10 posts--which I don't--so I had to get creative with the urls. :\
Files I'm including:
KingoRoot Apk v1.9
com.kingoroot.com-2.apk
KingoRoot v1.4.2 for PC
android_root.exe
KingoUser Apk v2.0.5
KingoUser.apk
Kingo Android Root.url
The files are provided AS-IS. I make no guarantee that they won't blow up your device. If your device explodes into a barrage of radioactive shrapnel, I am NOT responsible. These files worked for me. They may not work for you, and I have no idea if newer updates work either. Your mileage may vary.
**TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK**
So... Doom and gloom aside...
dracolusus.com/xda-developers/devices/cintiq-companion-hybrid/cintiq-root.zip
You can visit KingoRoot's website here:
kingoapp.com/android-root.htm
I think I installed the PC program first, plugged the tablet into the comp, and the program pushed KingoUser.apk (SuperUser) to the device. I'm not sure about the KingoRoot apk, though; I may have downloaded it from the play store separately either before or after rooting, or it could have been pushed by the program too, but I don't remember now.
More Bump
I got my Companion Hybrid about a year ago, and was astonished that Wacom didn't even try to provide updates for the Cintiq. I love the thing, but there is no immersive mode, the notification bar crashes the UI sometimes, and whatever background I have set will reset to the default jelly bean one after about a week. It's infuriating that someone could put so little effort into providing stable software, but still lock out people who are willing to put the work in.
When I called Wacom's support about getting root access, the guy who helped me just said its not possible, that there will be no updates ever, and that Wacom no longer supports the Companion Hybrid at all beyond the 1-year replacement warranty.
My biggest complaint of all is that when the tablet is in Android mode all the hardware buttons are pretty much useless.
This is all just a big rant I guess, but I would LOVE to see this thing running Android 5 or 6. This tablet has so much untapped potential.
Slightly off-topic but CCH owners are very hard to track down and Wacom forums are down so cannot ask there. I recently acquired a CCH by pure luck but the previous owner reset it before sending and that wiped some fix to the camera that he had applied which means when I open camera app in Android mode it shows 'Cannot connect to Camera'. He swears there was a fix for this which he can no longer find.
I don't want to send it back but just trying my luck here to see if anyone knows of this issue and the possible fix? When connected to PC, the front camera works fine with Skype with notification blue LED and all..
Sorry if it is the wrong thread but since my new thread will probably not catch you attention I thought I will post here.
Thanks.
I wasn't aware of any camera issue, since my camera has always worked fine. I got mine second hand off e-bay, though, so maybe its original owner applied the fix. I didn't pay too close attention to whether or not it had been reset before being sent to me; I was more focused on getting it rooted.
I did a quick google search for the issue, but only this thread and some post about the Surface Pro camera app came up. If you could post some more info about it, I'll see if I can find any useful files on mine.
Hopefully, a more experienced user will grace us with their expertise...
Camera never worked on mine, any camera or gallery app just crashes. I got it off eBay on July 2014 and it was factory reset when I got. Did some firmware update using Wacom settings app but didn't fix camera.
As for original question: KingRoot (kingroot.net/tutorials) worked perfectly for me.
Me 2!
if anyone ever figures this out- please please email me! I use cch as my daily work tool and so disappointed from day one on the android mode. Thought I would be able to use it as a bring home, over coffee at Starbucks, hotel lobby art pad; but instead its locked in at work, poorly connected with its craptastic matrix like cable system, nearly immobile.
need to crack this egg [email protected]
I realize this is a bit old, but for anyone looking to do this, New King Root works just fine.

Any progress? I found this thread a few years ago and have waited for it to update lol
I've basically had mine since release, neither camera worked. It just crashes.
I still don't trust KingoRoot after all the reports of stealing IMEIs and other such data. towelroot is proven, and I'll toss up a Dropbox link for you all if needed. It's actually taken from an archived version of the site anyway.
http://web.archive.org/web/20140616011907/http://towelroot.com/
Both of my cameras work, though neither are particularly good in the image quality department. Not sure what to say there regarding the camera app crashing.
Also, I apologize for being many months late to this, but ever since the Wacom forums went down and this thread got buried, I didn't think I'd get in contact with the CCH community at large again:

I tried v3, and it failed. v1 worked.
I've had no updates on the source code situation over these past few months, so consider that trigger pulled, even if they've lost the source.
Anyway, let me reiterate my findings, many of which are going to make development on this a pain:
-There is no fastboot mode. Seriously, I have yet to find a way to get it to work, because the usual adb commands don't work. It may not even be present. Because of this, I don't even know if the bootloader's locked or unlocked. We can only pray it's the latter.
-APX mode is present like you'd expect on a Tegra device (assuming ExpressKeys on left, hold the top two buttons down while powering on until the status LED flashes red), but without a proper image to use with Nvflash, it's of no use. I doubt Wacom has such a recovery image to give us in the first place.
-The stock recovery is the most useless stock recovery I've ever seen! Your only option is to hit the center rocker button or the power button to reboot normally, as there's no menu.
-Backing up the boot and recovery partitions is trivial with Flashify, or more recently, FlashFire once you're rooted. What ISN'T trivial is just unpacking and repacking them consistently, such that the repacked version with no change to the contents is identical to the original. Maybe I just haven't found the right tools yet.
-I have not tested any attempts to reflash the recovery partition yet. Compiling TWRP is a bit in over my head, especially for a device without proper kernel sources, and the CWM Builder site's long dead. TWRP has no equivalent. At least you don't have to worry about things like getting Cintiq mode working in recovery, which should simplify things should we have to resort to using generic Tegra 4 sources.
-NVIDIA's dropped software support for Tegra 4, so it doesn't have official kernel/driver/whatever code updates for Android Marshmallow onward. Porting the latest Nougat over may prove even more troublesome as a result, and it's already confirmed that the Remix Ultratablet (which uses the same SoC) won't be getting RemixOS 3.0 officially because of it.
The cards are stacked against us, but nevertheless, I still feel this is one piece of hardware that deserves some community support since Wacom let everyone down on updates.

[Q] ZTE Open C

I today received the ZTE Open C and I have to say it is a wonderful phone. There is one really irritating thing about it though. It is branded.
Whenever you lock the phone instead of displaying the wallpaper it displays the blue wallpaper of the Firefox, no matter what wallpaper you are using.
So for the people who know Firefox OS well: Is there a way to change this?
what release is running on ZTE Open C?
could you do a short review of the device, and more importantly, where did you get yours so early?
ZTE is sending out the ebay orders starting May 23rd...
not that i am interested in buying one, as i have the 1st Open, and i'll wait for better spec devices like the Alcatel Fire S,
but i guess it would be interesting for one or other here?

I saw the pre-order for it on Ebay on the 3rd of April, so the ship date for me was a lot earlier. It wasn't even linked on Google I just searched for it on Ebay and by chance it was there! Firefox OS 1.3 made by ZTE, and so far it's very good, apart from the problem I have mentioned. I would like to note that there is an app on the phone called "Software Updater" with "Update Device" "Update History" and "Update Frequency" options... I believe this means they are going to keep this updated. I'm using my ZTE Open for testing, and my ZTE Open C for main use (because of the larger screen)
Google ZTE Open C to find the ebay page, all the info is there, I would review it but I've only had it for a day so far
yeah, i would not bet on them supporting this one longer.
as it seems the Open is not supported anymore.
they don't answer questions about this.
Mozilla does not really answer questions about this.
so that is in my book a pretty good sign they wont support it.

how on earth should you "develop" if you can't update the frekking phone because the HAL is missing for newer builds?
thanks a bunch! 80 Euro wasted on a piece of crap phone that isn't worth more than 30USD to begin with.
being "early adopter" sure doesn't pay off here.
you get crappy hardware for a high price.
i pitty all the people who actually bought a geeksphone keon for 150USD (same low hw specs as the Open)

I'm sorry to dissapoint, but after using it for a few days there isn't enough different to review. There's the Firefox OS 1.3 which we know well, basically no lag at all and everything opens really quickly. The keyboard allows you to type really fast and still be accurate (this could be due to the 4 inch screen). The speaker is a little bit better and is on the front so you don't need to turn the phone around if you're listening to music, there is an update app on the phone which guarentees updates. The update option through the settings has been removed. It comes with a few of what I can only assume are ZTE's wallpapers but none of them have a logo or anything and most are quite good.
My only problem with the phone is that the lock screen never and will never display your wallpaper. It always shows the blue firefox wallpaper even if yours is different. I emailed ZTE and they said the "Firefox System" added it not them which I assume means the official Firefox OS 1.3 carrier build.
I hope this changes, because it's ugly. Other than that the phone is really good.

its sold officially on ebay, from germany, uk, russia and china. source country should be taken into consideration (import duty, vat and charger).
ive seen it in a few online shops but in these its more pricey.
any help for ZTE open

[Q] Is this is a phone made by enthusiasts for enthusiasts, why doesn't it dualboot?

Like, why have to choose between Ubuntu or Android, when TWRP-based recoveries, like Safestrap for example, come with ROM Slots?
because its probably very hard to make a custom phone, best to first see if theres a market for it and try to even out, let alone make profit... , is it worth the effort and money invested?
Once they succeed, then they can be more creative and flexible with what can be offered.... who knows, its possible 90% of users on this forum are just leeches who demand things and never actually give back, im hoping thats incorrect.

I can't gurantee anything but maybe one will come (for the regular Pro 1 but as they are almost the same...)
Dual boot is being worked on.

I think it should be possible to dual boot any A/B device as long as the userdata can be a polyglot.

10 odd years ago, I bought my first Android phone. It was an HTC Evo. I discovered xda-developers, found all the CyanogenMOD ROMs, etc. for that Evo, and never looked back. In 2012/13, I 'upgraded' to a Samsung S4 and didn't bother to root it, and I've 'upgraded' hardware many times since then. There was always that; 'Why am I doing this?!?' thought, in the back of my mind...but, I needed a phone to get the job done.
So, here we are in 2020, I have a Samsung S9 that works, that I bought a little over 2 years ago, but...it has Android 10, with the Samsung embellishments, but won't see anything other than security updates going forward. About this time, 10 years ago, I bought an Asus laptop. I don't recall which version of M$ Windows was installed (according to the sticker, it was Windows 7 Home), but that's irrelevant because; A) Whichever version was installed is now obsolete, B) The day after I brought it home, it was running Gentoo Linux. This got me to wondering WHY I couldn't have a cellphone that 'just works' for more than 2.5-3 years, AND was 'current!'
I was all set to pull the trigger on a Pixel 5, through my carrier, reasoning that it was the 'flagship' of the Google line and, despite the ho-hum specs, would be supported longer than the <insert OEM here> phone. Then the ALL About ANDROID podcast (twit.tv) mentioned the Pro1-X phone in TWO consecutive podcasts! That piqued my interest! As of yesterday, I ordered a Pro1-X, with the LineageOS. This is MY way of giving back to those developers that provided me with the ROMS that I downloaded, installed, and used years ago...
ALL of my computers run a version of *nix! Hopefully, I'll be just as happy with my Pro1-X (I may upgrade to the Debian offering, if available) when the phone arrives! :fingers-crossed:

Completely agree with the sentiment here. I purchased my Pro1-X (XDA edition) with the hopes that instead of chasing the next flagship every year, I will finally have a phone that I can optimize and update myself, and , more importantly, a phone that is secure and can run Ubuntu Touch.
