okay so i dont know how this may shed some light to any devs on this device, but i have a vodafone smlocked xplay and i downgraded to obtain root on generic uk then update ota to 2.3.3 with root carried over. so i got a bit bored refreshing the recovery and cm7 thread on arc forum and decided to go ahead and try unlock the bootloader on my phone via sony ericsson guide. and well.... it worked. i think. im not sure how to test if the bootloader is unlocked now but i just did the procedure and it said it finished so
thoughts on this???
EDIT so i just rebooted after flash and my phone is asking for setup details again so i think this means i have a bootloader unlocked simlocked xperia play???????????????
so you got fastboot? blue led?
Sent from my E15i using XDA App
I had fastboot blue led when I plugged in usb and held the search button while doing so. I flashed the loader using Sony unlocker and it rebooted the device with fresh Rom and I had to go through standard setup wizard first time round
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
blagus do you want to IM about anything, i really want to see progress on this device and it seems a very quiet forum at the moment. any tests you want me to run i will happily do and anything you need of me i will do if possible if it helps you guys along in ur missions
this proves simlock doesnt totally rule out bootloader unlockability
so i did a fastboot devices check after flashing the bootloader through the official site and this is what it came back with so i presume that means i have an unlocked bootloader now??
what we really need to figure out is whether this is down to the fact that either 1)
vodafone dont simlock their first set of shipped handsets or 2) simlock does not totally mean you cannot unlock the bootloader of your phone
iv had a few phones from vodafone since the xperia x1 (which came sim free even on contract) but my desire hd definitely was simlocked and branded to vodafone (cid VODAP001) so now i leave it to any devs this may be of interest to to contact me or post thoughts in this thread
meh
yup voda play is unlocked SIM free model, I have two

damn i thought it would be the same as the rest because i could not get an orange sim to work in the phone... god bless vodafone for not really caring what you do with your phone lol
sorry for the false alarm if that is the case
Seems like Vodafone Plays aren't SIM-locked for some strange reason... probably because they want these Xperias to be unlockable to attract customers

Ok so the saga continues. I sent phone in for repair since it wasn't powering on and not able to connect to usb. They sent me back a brand new unit, but it was an unlocked x10a locked to Rogers and now I can't get an unlock code anywhere. I have tried 5 different online companies, I called Rogers and begged as Sony recommended I do and now my only hope is Sony calls me today and gives me a code I guess. It sucks that I sent in an unlocked x10 and got back a locked one. I have a feeling I am going to be screwed! Any ideas? Thanks

I think he means SIM locked to Rogers.
This is insane, SE should provide you with an unlocked phone,
exactly like the one you sent for repair, and if that's not possible,
an unlock code is the least they can do!
I hope it turns out well for you.
Just finished up another half hour long call with Sony begging for help, but they say there is nothing they can do. I am hitting a wall. Anyone here a Rogers Customer that could try to get an unlock code from them for me? I will gladly donate some cash via paypal for someones help.

Thanks for the info...I placed an order for the software and then got word from the site that the software is unavailable for at least 1-2 weeks lol. I can't catch a break! I will update again when something changes. Thanks for all your help guys.
Did you give Mobile in Canada a go? Also the handset was sent into Flextronics for repair so they just gave you a new unit it looks like.. where are you located?
You maybe out of luck as Rogers deems the warranty void if you unlock the phone, so tread lightly. PM if you have any q's
Actually that's not true. In fact Rogers' provides their own unlocking service. There are requirements, which I can't recall all of them, I believe if you have completed your contract or have purchased the phone outright they will do it. I'll see if i can find the phone number for that dept when i get to work
I have called Rogers and they are showing no compassion at all for my situation. I'm afraid I am going to have to sell the phone. It's really a shame, because I do love it. So on the Bay it goes to hopefully find a new home and add some funds for me to get something else. If anyone is interested in a Rogers locked x10 let me know.
Just had a chat with O2 support regarding bootloaders, and thought you might like to see the result. I'll visit the shop at weekend and see what they say!
---: Hi I'm ---. How can I help?
---: Hi, i've got a Xperia S on contract with you, is it possible to unlock the bootloader to install root software?
---: i'm aware it will void warranty etc, having done the same thing to my old HTC Desire.
---: Let me check that.
---: Please can you tell me the -th and -th character of the answer to your security question?
---: Perfect.
---: Yes you can do that in the O2 shop.
---: Is there anything else I can help you with?
---: oh great, is there a charge?
---: That's you'll be discuss in the shop.
---: I can't comment on that now.
---: ok, thanks
I have the same o2 xperia s. Wait for your result mate. Thanks.
Would many shops really have techs that'd be able? Most staff I've ever talked to instore know how to Factory Reset and little else.

Well that's a lie I work at o2 and we can't unlock your bootloader or unlock your phone in any store. You can unlock your phone which should enable you to unlock your boot loader. Waiting for my unlock code to test it out

I got the sim unlock code, but that does nothing for the bootloader. Any chance you could find out more so I don't have to go into town on Saturday?
I've sim unlocked my phone via o2 and also debranded to a generic firmware also, still says no to bootloader unlocking - anyone have any other ideas?
I hope this can be sorted soon.

Hi!
had the same situation with my provider (A1, Austria). Phone is bootloader-locked. (A1 told me in advance that i wouldn't be).
They told me to call Sony, where they told me unlocking of Sim-öock is possible at shops but NOT unlocking of bootloader lock
Dont know if that information is correct, but now i bought a free one and am goidg to sell the provider-phone ....
Greetings
Bax
Yea same problem here sim unlocked but not for boot loader. O2 will not be able to unlock I'm store. All they can do is flash the o2 generic firmware back on your device.
The only solution to unlock the bootloader in XPS is EMMA.
Could you elaborate and is this doable myself?

+1 to that.
I've been into the O2 store, the 'Guru' said they wouldn't know how to do it in store. I'll emaill O2 next and see what they say.
Latest update, email from O2 says that only the manufacturer can do this! So next step is to get in contact with Sony lol

Sounds familiar, my Provider (A1) told me to contact Sony, too. Bit Sony said, no way to unlock a bootloader-locked phone ...
EMMA software can unlock the bootloader but is one thing to clarify. EMMA must be connected to SONY remote desktop and a special card SE and card reader are needed.

No way can O2 do it in-store.
Been there, done that.
Hi,
I have Sony Xperia S from O2. I need to SIM Unlock Code because I'm using another Network. Can any one help me to solve this issue?
Thanks.
if youre with o2 pay monthly you can fill in the sim unlock form on their site
https://www.o2.co.uk/apps/help/help?qid=1&q1=2&route=unlocking&case=Handset Unlocking Form
I tried this before but this phone was a gift. I don't have SIM number to fill the form.
However, I'm using another network which not allowing me to make use of the phone.
It seems that your phone is a branded version that is attached to a carrier. You can try one of those websites that will SIM unlock your phone, but I'm not sure if the XPERIA S can be, yet...

It seems like this. because I tried many ways to unlock the phone. I notesed while trying to unlock the bootloader from services configuration "Bootloader unlock allowed: NO" and i couldn't connect it in fastboot mode. it didn't locate the driver even with manual installation.
do you have any suggestion? and what are those sites if you know cheep website?
cellunlock does the job for you
bro just head over to cellunlock site and place ur order they gave me the unlock code within 24 hours it works just fine to unlock the bootloader after that.

check out this site

it is currently $39,99 on this web-site. I wonder if one can find anything cheaper - I have seen one on the eBay for £32,99 which I find too expansive too. do you guys think unlock codes will get any cheaper with time? thanks
:S :S
I tried them.
Returned the money because they can not do it.
I travel abroad for a long time and should I use another service provider.
I called my provider to do it for $ 500 for decoupling.
If I know I do not take this crap phone.
There is no solution to it?

I unlocked my Mrs's phone via cellunlocker webpage mentioned earlier. Had to wait a week, but can use any sim now. Though, the bootloader status hasn't changed (still says "no").
Then I bought an unlocked phone from eBay, thinking the bootloader will be unlockable, but it says "no" in the menu as well. :-(
I am wondering if you get it cheaper on the web - certainly those who made their way into unlocking world of SXS recently will make tonnes of money. Would appreciate if you could share if you have seen it cheaper than $40 please.

So, There is no free software to unlock the Phone?!?
cellunlocker.net and xperia S sim codes
Dear Valued Customer,
We just wanted to keep you updated on the status of your order. Despite our efforts, the manufacturer has informed us the Sony Ericsson Manufacturer method is delayed until further notice. We will be suspending this service until there is a more definite time line of when the service will be back up and running.
No one at this point has access to these codes at the moment.
We are very sorry about this situation once again, as we are sure you are eagerly awaiting your phone to be unlocked.
Your order will be returned as "Not found" and a full refund will be issued to you.
When the service is back up, tested and running 100%, you will be contacted.
Thanks once again, and we are sincerely sorry for this situation.
If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to call us at 1-800-507-9077 or email us at [email protected] anytime.
Ps they did refund my 39.99
So I've been reading forums like every day since the 12th(launch in Canada), when I got my phone. So it's not like I came right on to ask questions without reading anything.
2 questions.
First is:
About half a week ago-a week ago I was reading about someone having frequent crashes and didn't really think much of it because my phone was working fine. People suggested backup and restore with pc companion, as well as taking it back to the dealer for replacement ect ect. Moral of the story is mine is now randomly giving me errors asking me to force-quit. like maybe 3-5 times a day? Is this common for an android device? Should I even be worried at all?(Not really sure what I should be expecting in reference to what other people are experiencing.)
Secondly:
So I've read a bit about debranding, would that be an option with a locked bootloader, and would that remove all of the bloatware shoved down my throat by my carrier? If so, which debranding pack(not sure on the terminology here=/) would be best to use if wanting to be as light as possible. Would a factory reset afterwards remove the debranding?
Extra Info: Unfortunately because Rogers in Canada owns the rights to selling Sony Ericsson's even purchasing the XpS directly from the Sony store(which I did)($500 Cad. +12% sales tax) limits you to a carrier lock via Rogers. (and a locked bootloader) Unit comes stock with .73.
Thanks in advance.
For second question answear is that you can debrand with locked bootloader with no problem (you just can not instal custom roms).
So far lightest would be Nordic software and personally I like to use UK generic where all unnessary apps can be deleted .
Factory reset would not remove debranding ( just resets settings and all of your customizations).
If you want to sim unlock your phone it is not difficult just order unlock code. I got mine for $5 from ebay, received code in one hour, now using it with fido.
Hmm you're with fido now? Wouldn't the unlock code be the be the same? Care to share?
Thanks for the information on debranding.
Sent from my LT26i using XDA
Unlock code depends on imei number of your phone.
I can share mine but it will not be accepted by your phone since unlock code is unique to each phone. Once you try to insert anything other then rogers sim card your phone will ask for unlock code, you have only 10 tries, after that phone will be permanently locked to rogers, so make sure you submit your imei correctly in order to receive correct unlock code.
In ebay just type unlock code rogers sony ericsson , the seller i used was freedommobile they charged me $5.49+taxx, see no point paying more then that.
Wow yeah.. I had no idea you only had like 10 tries. Can that be reset that counter via custom ROMing? I understand that custom ROMing sometimes unlocks, I was more or less asking out of curiosity.
Also.. If doing a factory reset wouldn't re-brand, Would doing a backup and restore via PC companion rebrand my unit? Or would that just restore back to the back to the base of what ever I used to debrand it with?
Uk Generic eh? Sounds like it would also be my cup of tea. I'm sure it's posted here, I'll use the search feature when I get home.
Thank you so much for your imput and follow up my friend.

Hey,
I have recently bought an Xperia Z ultra, and when i was about to CM11 it, i found out that the boot loader unlock allowed is NO.
Now where is live, i brought the phone through and import shop. so the procedure to obtain a operator key and send to Sony is impossible.
I can access my fastboot, i have even rooted my phone, but i really want custom roms and kernels to be an option.
I know that the usual answer to this is that its impossible. But i would appreciate if we discuss it to progress on this as i have seen too many people with this issue and i think it needs a solution. I would request the admin/moderators to keep this thread alive.
Now does anyone know why is it impossible ? is it hardware or software ?
any directions or people that i can personally request to work on this ? any leads ? i am really desperate, i really cant afford to spend that much on a phone again.
is the Xposed Framework any possible solution for this ?
any ideas information is helpful......
There is no solution, or one being worked on that I know of. In one thread it has been asked and a very good hardware hacker said that even taking the back off and putting a Xperia into it's maintenance mode you cant unlock a BL for these locked devices.
Have a read of the hard brick thread for the details
there seems to be a way, just a thought.
Upon on reseaerch, i am finding out a Linux command called kexec seems to be favour here. Since it can bypass kernel and force a custom one...

sp has something going on too
Xperia sp seems to have been worked upon in this matter recently http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2377972&page=7
kexec for ultra
Kexec for the ultra itself

Are there any developers I can call out/plead to regarding this matter?? its really frustrating to have this much of a powerful device and not play with it. I miss CM.
unlocked bootloader if it says no
I had no idea that the sony z ultra had some units that couldn't be unlocked. why would sony do this, it says being able to unlock your bootloader is important to sony. They even gave me an unlocked code from their site. I bought an factory unlocked phone, so stupid that this one here can be unlocked and that one can't. so am I stuck with a locked bootloader now? I sold my Lg because of this crap now I am dealing with it again ****

It's your carrier that has locked it (Rogers, i'm guessing?). There are only a couple of carriers that locks down the bootloader, like Rogers, O2 (i think) and another one that we're aware of.
It was bought factory unlocked from store no carrier involved which makes it even more crazy. I guess I will sell this model and get different one. Does the gpe have this stupid restriction on its model. I really like the 6.4 inch screen and don't want to go down in size. I am already going to get the nexus 6 so I definitely want a z ultra also

It's shouldn't be locked. Only a couple of carriers locks the bootloader. The GPe's bootloader is unlockable.
@BrownDog99 type *#*#7378523#*#* and check if you haven't. I don't think I've seen a factory one they is bootloader locked. What model? And from where did you buy it?
Ya i tried that it says no bootloader unlock. I bought it from a used cell store in toronto. It has a factory unlocked sticker on it, with no carrier apps installed or anything. Maybe it was a carrier phone, weird it came factory unlocked and with no carrier apps installed. I rooted it and put a dual recovery for lb and of course installed xposed. No custom kernel for me I guess. Too bad. I think it is Rogers and Bell that lock down the bootloader. I am impressed with the speed of it for a 800 snapdragon.
