[Q] - Is there a way to save touchwiz settings - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know if there is a way to save touchwiz settings like home screen configurations? This will be helpful when flashing different rom's, i can just restore the apps from titanium backup and restore touchwiz settings and im all set.
I'm new to touchwiz and was using ADW launcher ex before where i could save the adw settings and easily restore. I know i can use ADW ex, but wanted to use Touchwiz for sometime since i'm not finding anything wrong with it
I apologize if this has been asked and answered already, i couldn't find it in search.

Titanium Backup should take care of that, but you must have a rooted phone to use it.

No, it's an android limitation that widgets and locations can't be backed up and restored, that we hope will be fixed with ics

Not possible to Restore after flashing a new ROM but with Desk Migrate you can copy widgets from this launcher to that.
What about using Titanium backup and back up both the app and the data? It might work

Titanium backup restores the settings but you only get an error loading widget where the widget used to be.

Go Backup & Restore claims to have the feature, but it's buggy and doesn't always work half the time ya get the same "Problem Loading Widget Error" I've tried everything from copying my existing Go Launcher folder to my sd card and restoring it upon new rom install and it only worked one time then never worked again.
And you necroed a 2yr+ old thread to say that, eh (which everybody worked out around the time that thread was created) ?

What's the best way to restore system settings after flashing new ROM?

I am running Foxhound 1.1 right now. I am already using Titanium Backup to restore all the user app data when flashing to a newer version of Foxhound. However I still lose certain system settings such as power savings and setting all notifications to vibrate and other miscellaneous stuff under the settings menu. My biggest gripe is having to manually move selected apps back to the home screen. Is there anyway to restore these settings quickly after updating to a new ROM?
I have heard that it's not advisable to restore system data using Titanium Backup so I've only stuck to restoring user app data for now. I also keep my phone backed up to and restore from my Google account so contacts and other stuff are ported over fine. I'd just really like a way to keep all my system settings and not have to manually tweak everything again. Thanks!
Are you using touchwiz as your default launcher? If you use an alternative launcher like Apex or Nova you can make a backup of your desktop configuration

No I am using Apex! Really? Let me go check that out.. Thanks for the tip. I hadn't seen that option yet.. Whoops.
Ok I backed up my Apex settings and Desktop to the SD card! :fingers-crossed: How about keeping system settings? It would be nice if I didn't have to manually turn off haptic feedback and the other stuff every time.

I'm not sure smaller system settings like that can be backed up and restored :/

Ah that's alright then. The most pressing issue was to restore the placement of homescreen icons. Thanks for the tip man.
Either use titanium for your apps and then alter the layout to your liking or, perform an advanced back up of data from Cwm, do a full wipe, then cache and dalvic. Flash the rom. Allow it to boot then, go back to recovery and advanced restore data. Should work fine although the cleanest way is to do a full wipe and allow the apps to restore themselves, you'll lose application data that way though.

Alternative Launcher ROMs

I've trialed and tested a number of different ROMs but find that regardless of the ROM,
TOUCHWIZ WILL ALWAYS CRASH AT SOME POINT!!
Doesnt happen all the time, but it will happen, and it is a pain!!!!
Does anyone know of any ROMs where touchwiz has been removed and is not the default launcher in the ROM.
Many Thanks...
Just change launcher! Try nova, to clear default go. Settings/applications/manage applications/tw launcher and clear default

touchwiz crashes? What do you mean by that? I hope you are not talking about launcher reloading?
I would normally agree with you, and theoretically you'd think that would work! But it doesn't.. Touchwiz, because it's running in the rom still in the background, still crashes and no matter how many times you click "ok" it constantly crashes and freezes up the phone, regardless of the alternative launcher I'm running over the top..
So I was Hopi.g for a rom that had the touchwiz launcher completely removed! Either that, or is there away to completely stop touchwiz from running once I have another launcher open. Other than "force stop", cuz that doesn't seem to work either..!

Well, obviously the widgets etc redraw every now and again, but no, what I mean is it crashes!! And no matter how many times you click "ok" to restart it, it will never restart, just keep getting the popup "touchwiz has stopped, restart" or sumthin like that...
The only way to stop it and make it run again is to restart the phone every time!

I have never got a force close on TW launcher. If you are getting it on multiple roms (even stock) then there is a chance that you are restoring system data?

I would like to think that i'm not a noob when it comes to flashing etc.. I am aware and clear on what needs to be done / and not done, when flashing new roms, so i'm 99% sure that accidently restoring system data is not the issue..

Can you just use Titanium Backup and Freeze Touchwiz Home? That should stop it, although I find it really strange that it's crashing in the backup if you're using a different launcher, it shouldn't even be running if you're on another launcher.

Seriously, which browser doesnt reload pages when letting it run in the background?

Am using dolphin HD now. Whenever i "close" it with the home button and open up another app. I go back to dolphin and the webpages are being reloaded? i remember iPhone doesnt do this unless it really runs out of memory. Now, i have a tweak on my rom that doesnt let my ram drop below 200mb. Any ideas why this is happening?

No it's not safe.
Download and install nova, apex etc. launcher before you do that.
Heh your SIII won't boot without a launcher. That happens
It's just like a windows computer without windows installed

I've already backed up my nandroid. Say if that happens. I just have to flash the backup via CWM and all will be fine?

In theory yes, but I haven't tried. I don't understand why you don't install another launcher before you delete TW launcher? Why would you try to run your SIII without a launcher installed?

yep, if you've done everything right, the nandroid should restore your phone.
i don't know which rom you are using so copy and backup the nandroid to your computer.
(some roms delete the sd-card when formatting)
OK deleted my touchwiz with nova installed. Worked fine. Hope the ram usage goes down though. Still am seeing the touch wiz lock screen..

No, you are just seeing the system lock screen. Touchwiz, for the most part, on the GSIII, is just a launcher. A lot of the other things you see are other parts of the ROM.
Freezing Toucwiz with Titanium Backup would have been a better choice that deleting it.

Backup Sense Launcher

Hi all,
Is there a way to backup the Sense Launcher Icons/Folder/Widgets besides using another launcher like Go, Nova, or Apex?
I found a post somewhere that says to backup "launcher.db" in /Data/Data/com.android.launcher/databases but I could not find com.android.launcher/databases on the ROM i've installed.
I hate having to redo my icons/folders/widgets when installing a ROM and having to do a full wipe.
I have Titanium Backup but I've read from some posts that suggests not using it for this purpose.
Thanks for any suggestion..
I can't confirm if backing up the data base will work but I know that e.s. file explorer will get you there. Install it give it root permissions and go back it up.
No. Unless you do a full NANDROID backup, everything will reset. Hornet, if you use any launcher other than sense, you will retain everything.

When i switch roms I restore all my apps then i go into tb there is a green high lighted backup that says HTC Sence desktop hit restore data on that and all my folders and icons and most widgets restore back to where they were, the only widgets that don't never restore for me is power control and power amp for some reason.
Don't forget to go in tb and back it up before you wipe all your data.

I used to use titanium then switched to my backup pro and have great results obviously as long as I am using the same ROM or base to backup the screens etc. I switched to nova and that backup restore works great again for using on the same ROM or base.
