CWM 3 vs 2.5 - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Cwm3 vs Cwm2.5. What are the differences, pros, cons.
I had trouble backing up roms and also wiping data with 3.0.
2.5 has been pretty much a trooper.

Corrected subject in case anyone caught the error.

CWM 2.5 will flash both Amend and Edify script. CWM 3.0 will only flash Edify script. Pretty soon everything for the Fascinate will be written in Edify script. CWM was designed to flash Edify script and you will likely run into fewer problems flashing through CWM 3.0 once everything is written in Edify. The few bugs that are present in CWM 3.0 will get fixed, so moving forward it will be the only CWM you will need (at least for the time being)

[Q] Problems with Install.txt file for Streakdroid

I've been using Streakdroid since 1.6.0 and for some reason I can't get the install.txt file to work.
I put all my options in like Steve requested, but for some reason when I boot up my build it doesn't work.
I save it to the root of the sd card like the instructions said.
Anybody know how to fix my problem?
the install.txt file is only used when you are flashing the rom.
After you make changes to the install.txt are you then re-flashing the rom?
you just save it as install the .txt is added by notepad when you save it
In 1.6.0 it should be saved as install.cfg and should be placed inside the android folder in the sd card, install.txt is for 1.6.1 and higher.

And the install.txt file in 1.6.1 and higher are placed in the root of the sd card, those are the differences.

Hmm I'm still new to this so please excuse me.
But I don't believe I'm flashing the rom.
I was upgrading from 1.7.0 to 1.8.1.
After I go into Clockwork I do as the instructions say and wait for the reboot.
I think I'm doing something wrong with the install.txt file.
Clockwork didn't work for me and doesn't work for a lot of people. You should use streakmod.
Streakmod is another custom rom installer. You will need to flash it to the phone, so it can replace clockwork.

Yep, Clockwork does not work on streakdroid ROMs you have to use streakmod recovery in order to flash them.

thanks it worked if u dont mind me asking what rom/kernal do u use?
I'm using CM7 right now, nightly 24 with Neo 07 (for the led notify and smartass governor). I haven't really had the time to update to the newest nightly nor have I really had the inclination to.
I might be trying miui soon though, seems like something new to work with (kinda getting bored of have the CM7 install process so streamlined for me).

I got it working then installed cm7 and both storages don't work again its like they only work on stock. I've tried 4 different cm7s nitelys and rcs and miui on all of them the storages say unmounted. This never happened before I was running cm7 perfect for a week or two then I tried flashing a new today and a voodoo kernal and now this is happening. I flashed revolution rc1.2 and ever since I've had this problem.

Well, that probably happened because you flashed Revolution from CM7. You cannot do that as they run on different filesystems. Therefore, you will experience problems.
So how do I format the system for cm7

[Q] CWM from ROM Manager

Is the CWM from the latest rom manager (blue, version 5.0.20) good to go for all your ROM and kernel flashing / nandroid needs? I knew the older versions had issues but been reading that the latest version is fixed.
I been reading bits and pieces would like XDA opinions.

Try it and tell us.
I don't see a reason to flash something different in place of -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500
since it already works fully without problems.
Depends if you want to take risks or not... Romracer's works just fine.
after I unlocked and rooted, I installed CWM rom manager and installed CWM recovery 5.0.2.0 from the rom manger and worked perfect, I have done about 3 back-ups and has work perfect
It's working and now supports sdcard & internal sdcard.
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
It also supports ext-4 (I believe romracers does too) so its good for those looking to flash CM7 pre beta 4
yep turns out its the 'recommended' one for CM7 so I'm going with it for now.
cheers

Confirmed? I did a backup a couple days ago from in rom manager to test it, and it just backed up to internal sd with no prompts. Perhaps you're talking about from directly booting into recovery? In that case, pass, I'll stick with rom racer.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
As of today, RomManager's CWM does give you the option to choose the external sd card but it doesn't actually work. So internal only still. And RomRacer's recovery does NOT support ext-4, only ext-3 as far as I'm aware.

Installing CM7.1

I would like to install the CM7.1 Stable that just came out. I've read the cyanogenmodwiki instructions and the instructions here, but I find both to to be confusing and conflicting with each other. I also watched the mobiletechvideo.com installation youtube.
I am wondering if the following would work.
From JFD Stock 2.1 root the phone and download Rom Manager.
In Rom Manager Flash Vibrant MTD (not Galaxy S Vibrant) Clockworkmod Recovery
Boot into recovery.
Wipe/format and fix permissions
Flash Cyanogenmod 7.1 stable +gapps
Reboot.
I am confused though, in the cmwiki instructions it says to format - but if I format everything won't the cm7.1 zip file on the internal SD also be destroyed?
Thanks in advance.
No, that would be a good method. It will still be on your sd, weeping doesn't format your card. (formatting your card would, different things).
Technically, you could Odin to jfd, take the cm7.1 download and my option b update.zip (noob guide) and that's all you need... Move those 2 to your internal.
Odin
Let it boot
Hold in both volumes + power
At Vibrant screen (booting) release
Now in stock recovery, reinstall packages
Now in cwr, flash 7.1
Reboot
done.

so no need to worry about the whole RFS vs YAFFS conundrum?
What issue? Even the main man himself (atinm) gives you both install methods.. The steps above are tested and work, much faster also. You could be booting 7.1 in under 10 minutes.
Looks like a nightly is already out too. I'd go stable.

[Q] Anyone try PDroid?

I am trying to find a way to block permissions to certain apps after installation. I came across this app called PDroid but requires a patched ROM using a linux script. App can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357056.
Has anyone tried this app?

I haven't. I use App Shield, and it works well
I forgot to mention there is also LBE privacy guard but I wanted to see all my options
You can try permissions denied.

If you have a ROM in mind, if be happy to compile for you. I've been using it on icscrewd personally the last few versions. It is a really easy install, just flash a zip in cwm and install pdroid from the market

I am currently using UnNamed v1.3.2 from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299474 second post.
Do you mind making a flashable patch? Thanks!
Sure expect one and a revert zip tomorrow.

Downloading the ROM to my Linux box right now, in any case.

Mount /system in CWM before flashing.
Clear cache and dalvik for good luck
Install PDroid app from market to access features.

Thanks I will try it out this week.
UPDATE: Bad news bears. I flashed the patch as described (mounted system, wiped cache) but the system went into a boot loop. The boot animation kept cycling over and over again.
Did the restore zip work at least? That's the first I've heard of a bout loop caused by it.
It only edits 3 files, none of which could possibly cause more than a boot loop in any case.
EDIT: May have been a corrupted download, I'll be sure to post MD5, hashes next time. Sorry about that!

I don't think it was a corrupt download. I just created a patch myself using the Windows program and it also produced a boot loop. I restored from a nandroid the first time, trying out the restore file right now.
Alright sounds good. That's still really is though, and I have no idea why it happens. Did you flash any addons on top of the stock ROM?

Nope. Just the patch. Although the second time I didn't mount the system. Is this a necessary step? I didn't see anything in the OP of the PDroid thread.
Possible reasons for failure:
* Corrupt download first time
* Second time, didn't mount system
What is this "If you "integrated sys Dalvik into ROM" with Titanium Backup, you will have to undo it"? I am using TB but I'm not sure if this applies to my situation.
I noticed the ROM must be deodexed and I didn't see any odex filetypes in the system/framework directory. That should be the only place they appear right?
On a better note, the restore file works =) Thanks for the help
Yes, you should mount /system in CWM, as I didn't manually edit the patch to add in auto-mounting.
I just tried on Unnamed 2.2.1 and experienced the boot loop as well (created the patch using the Windows patcher). Restore zip works fine, and tried with and without mounting /system in CWM. There apparently is something in Unnamed that the code doesn't like
Too bad, sounds like a good program (I also use LBE and wanted to use it along side).

It's a great app. I am running it on a Hellraised ROM. None of the AT&T base ones work. I sent the dev an error log from UnNamed 1.3.1 and he knows what the problem is and will try to address it in a future patcher release. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22111242&postcount=757)
Check back on that thread whenever he updates it. It's worth it!

Thanks! I guess I didn't go far enough back in the dev's thread (DUH!) so hopefully he's got the info he needs to fix it. I'd really like to try it sometime.
The developer of PDroid has released an update to his patcher that fixes the bootloop issue for AT&T roms. I just installed using UnNamed v1.32 and it works great.
Feels good to block all of those permissions.
