[Q] battery is draining while plugged to charger - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any good reason for the battery to drain while its plugged in charger while i use the phone?!
i was on %15 battery, plugged to charger (it kept showing the whole time the "charging icon", kept using it (just browsing some apps, nothing heavy) and whoops, after 15 minutes the phone shuts down because battery died
wtf?
this is really worrying me
i just got the phone 3 days ago..

This is not normal at all, did you check your task manager, was your phone very hot?
Since it turned off where you able to turn it on again ? After charging of course.

When the battery low sign comes up it says not to use your phone when charging, i think its not good for the battery? But I've done it before and mine charges. U might have a faulty charger? Take it back.

The only thing that can reportedly do that is like Plants vs Zombies or some intensive game. Weird... Run your task manager and see what's taking up your CPU?

I was having same problem when using the **** samsung charger..anyway since my samsung charger is already dead..im using my htc charger with a 1 amp output...no more problems..even at a very low state of battery..i can still charge and watch streaming movies over the net.

i have an update:
yes the task manager looked fine BUT yes it was VERY VERY hot so what happens is that the phone turned off because of 0% battery, then i turned it on after like 30 seconds, and i kept using it EVEN MORE than i did (plugged to the charger) and it started to cool down and the battery DID charge, it didnt happen again.
i dont know what was running in the background, but i saw nothing at running applications and servers.
that was scary..

Not sure, what did you have running, what apps/widgets do you have installed?
I found if I left WiFi enabled and plugged it in to charge, the phone was really warm the next morning and did not charge at all. So now I make sure it and GPS are off and then charge over night with no issues or over heating.
Can anyone tell me why it is not possible to charge the phone with it turned off? As soon as I plug it back in to charge it turns on again, plugged in to the computer or to the wall outlet. I have never had a phone that acted that way before.
Hi guys nothin was running in terms on apps widgets or wifi or anything. I did have wifi running for bout half hour as i was browsing. But i turned it off. I was on the fone however but this had made no difference in the past 5 months

[Q] loosing charge while charging?

hey guys not a noob but feel like one right now bc i have to ask this.
anyways i have a vibrant running nero 5 w/voodoo. my charger port is iffy at best. i ordered a new usb port off ebay and will be installing it once it arrives.
now the phone charges fine off, however i noticed that when im on it while plugged in charging its loosing percentage. i just finished charging it and turned the phone back on and kept it plugged in to top off the last 4 percent it had to go to 100. and when i check in settings it says 88% about 5 mins later it said 86%
any ideas?
i also did a search and didnt really find anything
I've had this issue since day 1. I've had my vibrant for almost a year now and it's never changed. It's happened on stock and all roms I've used. It seems to happen more when I'm using memory heavy apps or games. I used to play pocket legends and I once drained my battery (while plugged in) so much that I went from %100 down so low my phone died. The charger never lost connection either.
I've also had this happen while streaming tv shows to my phone & using tv out while charging.
Happens to me sometimes. I figured it was a badly calibrated battery. I calibrated my battery and it doesn't happen that much. Oh, and I've learned to not really use my phone when it's charging. Lol.
yea i bought a new battery yesterday. let it die then charged it. drained it and had probs. i wiped the stats and its off charging now sitting at about 92 percent. see how it goes

I've gone through it with the stock battery and my 3000mAz
Are you overclocked at all? Maybe set a charging profile with setcpu to lower clock and/or undervolt if you have a compatible kernel? Not sure, just throwing out ideas... Good luck, hope you get it figured out.
[SOLVED]
issue has been solved. thanks everyone
How did you solve it
it could be an app using the cpu at all times
turned the phone off and let it charge all night and that was about 3 days ago and its back to normal now. it was deff a bettery issue as i have 3 batterys and 2 extended ones and my other batteries would charge just fine. but all good to go now. thanks.

Battery drains while Note is charging from outlet

I noticed that while I have my Note charging from the wall, the battery will drain if I have the screen on or browse the internet. LTE coverage stops about 5 miles from my house, so I was browsing the internet on HSPA during this time. I tried wifi for a bit and it still drained. It will only charge when the screen is off, when I turn it back on the battery starts draining. Does anyone else experience this?
EDIT: It also takes forever to charge. I'm not as concerned with that as much right now though.

Yes mine does this too, i dont really care since my phone lasts 16+ hours i usually just start charging it when i go to sleep.
but yes i have this problem.
I just got my phone yesterday so I don't know how long the battery will last for me, but having it drain while plugged in is really annoying. I plug in my phone overnight and will read news and browse the internet until I fall asleep, so I don't want it to discharge while I'm doing that.
I'm testing the ipad charger we have, as it offers 2.1A instead of 1. If the phone can make use of the extra current it may help. Otherwise the charging circuitry is just what it is.

Same here. Which sucks for me since im a heavy web browser during the day and can only get 6 hours of battery.

Please let me know your results. I will buy a new charger if it prevents this.
This does not happen with mine. I just ran a test - started at 82% on the wall charger. Currently tethering via wifi, doing heavy surfing. Also opened Opera and kept refreshing a page every 20-30 seconds to keep the screen on and to simulate surfing via the device itself. So doing double surfing. After about 10 minutes I was up to 84%.

That's good to know that at least one person doesn't have this issue. Hopefully more people reply so we can see how many people are or are not having this problem.
For some reason after my first charge my streak never chargers to completely 100 percent. Only 98 percent no matter how long I charge it for. Anyone know why?

This doesn't happen to me. I just use the same charger with a different cable. Can watch netflix, browse web etc

My note charges while using it as well. The ipad charger likely won't make a difference unless the circuitry in the Note is different than the Galaxy Nexus as I tried an ipad charger with that and the current was so high it shut off from overheating..
Also your phone has software in it to prevent overcharging. What it does is it will charge to 100%, then even if plugged in run off battery power down to say, 95% and when it hits that lower threshold it will charge back up to 100% and so on. This is probably what you are seeing.

I've noticed something similar to this and attribute it to the dual core processor and movie-theatre-sized screen.
Actually, my Note takes longer to charge on any charger other than the one that came with the phone, unless I have it charging off a usb plug directly into my computer (for some reason). However, I will say that unless I'm doing something super data/GPS intensive like Google Nav, the battery will not continue to discharge while plugged in, so it's possible you might have a crap battery.
I would power cycle the thing a few more times and then if no different, try and swap out the battery.

Chalk me up on the list for those that have draining batteries while being charged. I don't even have to be doing anything on the phone except making a phone call... and it will drain.
I have a little update to my problem. Instead of using the cable that came with the phone, I tried a 15ft cable from monoprice that I had laying around. Now the phone charges when in use, and chargers much quicker than it did with the Samsung cable. So I am happy now.
I am having the same issue. It takes more than 15 hours to fully charge, then only get about 6 hours of usage. It will also drain if plugged in and I am using it with the screen on. This should not be happening. I believe that the battery is defective. If there is no fix for this, I am going to exchange mine. I read about the outstanding battery life on this thing and I want it! I was tired of getting only 6 hours on my Dell Streak and paid full price for the Note hoping to get at least 10-12hrs. I can't even get the thing to fully charge.

If you're using the stock charger and cable, something is wrong. Period. It takes maybe 5-6 hours to charge from nearly flat, probably less.

Using the stock charger plugged into a wall outlet? Or charging from a USB cable plugged into a computer?
in my experience since I got my note a month ago, different usb cables seem to vary in charging speed, even using the same usb port on my computer or the wallwart. I know that prob makes no sense and i can't explain it, but I have a cable that has those rf chokes on each end, and it is thicker than most cables, seems to carry current better or something. I am charging from a usb3 port on my desktop, and have fast charge turned on so that may be affecting it.
I can use my phone, while charging and I gain 1% about every 5 minuets.

[Q] Charging Patterns? Is slow charging advantageous?

Hey all,
So, was over at the other half's house today. Before I left I asked her to stick my x10 into charge for a few mins. When I grabbed it on my way out I was surprised to see it was mostly charged, then I remembered she uses the wall charger while I normally USB. I understand the limitations of USB ports in charging, but it got me thinking.
Can charging the pack so quickly be good for the battery. I'm more up on my Ni-Mh cells than Li-ion but I would have thought that ~1hr charge cant be good in the long run? Where possible would it be better to slow charge via USB like I have been doing?
TIA,
Scratch.
personally, I have charged my phone overnight using the wall charger every night for almost 2 years and my battery appears to be fine. No temp spikes, no sudden drain

battery drains
I nearly always charge mo phone overnight in a power socket aswell, only on a rare occasion i find the battery drains mega fast for no apparent reason. I just reboot, recharge and turn it on again... it is weird but that does the trick for me sometimes. no clue what causes the drainage, even tho its idle. got an app killer on aggressive so that should help, but i'm not sure its just the apps that drain battery.

Are you also using a different cable?
Try to change your cable instead of your charger and battery happened to me before and it was USB cable.
