So I've been having problems with my phone, got a warranty replacement phone delivered yesterday. Got so excited that I forgot that I would need to do an OTA update on the old phone to get it back to stock, so maybe they wouldn't notice it had been rooted. Can they tell if had been rooted, even if its taken back to the original state? I can't seem to find Unaltered Froyo Odin tar files anywhere. I really don't know what to do anymore, I feel like I've searched everywhere.
just odin DL09 or DI01 and ota update from there... might take a little time but it'll be legit
That was the original plan, I guess my day was kind of chaotic. In the midst of things I already activated the new phone... So it won't let the old one get the ota. I think I really screwed up

According to http://www.droid-life.com/2010/07/1...feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+DroidLife+(droid+life) there will be an update to Eris phones. One thing I wonder about is they are calling this mandatory.
What happens if you don't install this? I know Verizon tracks who installs patches and I don't want to take chances losing root.
yeah I'm running EvilEris3.0 on my wife's Eris. I'm actually wanting to go back to the stock 2.1 cause shes not happy with how her phone is acting.....wondering if this will put it back to stock or HOW do I flash it back to the stock ROM?
any help with this would be thankful.
Ok lets not, panic. You need to read the entire thing, and point out that if you have MR3 then MR4 is mandatory but if you only have MR2 then it is only recommended meaning if your current rom has OTA working and you have MR 2 you will be able to ignore the update. If you have MR3 (MR being maintenance release) the update will be eventually be installed for you if you don't do it voluntarily. and you cannot get a replacement for any problems that this is suppose to address if you do not install it
Hey this shouldn't be a big deal. This same update was sent out sometime at the end of last month and those who were rooted were able to root back instantly. Even the 1.49 people. (Assuming you have luck with ADB recovery)
So it will just temporarily remove root?

Pretty much from what I've seen.
And all we have to do is reflash recovery like we did the first time? That's not so hard.

Put her on Ivan's Eris_Official.
No strange/unpredictable behavior. Ever.
I'll just wait for someone to run diffs on it vs the leak4rombase version and see what we can get from it.
Okay with this new root method and all I'm curious as to know if this MR4 is going to stop us from rooting this method. The old method wasn't stopped, but obviously not everyone can do that method.

theres no guarantees but you are correct they probably wont notice that it doesn't work. What they will be looking for is if the phone works, water damage indicator and physical damage. They will probably once over the phone then return it as long as you are within your proper return period.

That's what I'm thinking. It works it just won't have as much bloatware on it. There just gonna resell it anyway. I tried to restore the nandroid of the original rom but once restored it gets stuck at the first samasung splash screen.

If you flash back via ODIN make sure the three button recovery works because if ODIN crashes mid-way (I've had this happen twice on my previous Vibrant) you've got a brick if you can't get it back into download mode via the buttons. Do a forum search. Or maybe if you wound up with the dreaded black screen of death that wouldn't be such a bad thing. They'd almost have to take it back then.
i just returned one the other day to best buy and the chick went through the phone for a couple of minutes, checked settings and menus and then also checked for physical damage. i had reflashed it back to stock anyways as bell's version comes with a bunch of specific apps. i was glad i did flash it back and i also relocked it to bell's network as i had unlocked it for use on rogers

It really isn't.. its better to be safe than sorry. At least thats how I feel.
And as far as that phone -- pc logo, I guess they would take it back but if they ask you how did it get that way? you're going to have to lie about it and its just going to feel really awkward.
Truthfully though, all they'd have to be trained to do is not accept returns if you see the superuser app. That'd be the easiest way to see if someone has rooted their phone & If you're not even going to take the effort to flash it back to stock, you're probably not going to delete that app either.
Just re-Odin it & call it a day. It took me less than 5 minutes to get back to stock & maybe another 5 to download the necessary files.
This will also ensure that you don't have any leftover contacts or log ins to facebook or anything like that on there (better safe than sorry).
Thanks guys. I was using my slide for the last couple of days by picked the vibrant back up and fell back in love. If I do decide to return it I'll put it back on stock. Thanks again guys.

Yup, that'll work as well. Or you could download a nandroid that is stock without root.
i got my vibrant the day it came out, from costco... $99
Swapped it a week later, Couldn't unroot it for some reason, but they didn't notice... then again it was costco
They won't care trust me i worked for tmo. These people don't even know what root is they might think its a plant. They just scan it out of their inventory and send it to samsung. If it has root on it they are not going to send it back to tmo just to find u or look to charge your account. That is soooooo tedious cuz u have to do an IMEI search which hardly works on TMOs internal network (i tried when i worked with them never really worked) so yea all they look for is hardware damage and the liquid damage indicator other then that ur golden.

I wouldn't risk it. I'm pretty sure that Samsung will simply hook it up and flash it back to stock without worrying too much, however there's always that chance. They could see you voided your warrenty and Verizon could charge you for the Inc 2. (Worst case scenario)

This. My recommendation: download the stock DL09 from this thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124391
Then update OTA to get to latest stock stuff. I know, we want to make fun of Verizon (I debated sending mine back with cm7) but better safe than sorry - remember this is a warranty swap and rooting voids your warranty.
I shipped it back with straight DI01 eclair. Nothing they can really say to that one.

Okay, this is driving me nuts. I've found multiple posts on how to unroot my phone but ALL the links are dead for Odin and everything I need to do it. Thats great...but when they go to test it and find out that its been hacked, Verizon is going trace that phone back to you and charge you for the replacement. As the poster above stated, its not worth the risk when it takes 5min to odin back to stock.
they actually still can tell that the phone has been flashed even if you odin back to stock. The only way to truly completely hide that the phone has been rooted is to use a usb jig and reset the custom binary download counter.
But they honestly don't care. This is all much ado over nothing.

On the new devices that have flash counters yes...but from my understanding not on the fascinates or older devices. Maybe Im wrong tho?
I was pretty sure that the fascinated had this counter as it is triggered when Odin flashes the phone.
Anyway, I'll try to look into it if I get time.

Keep checking for software updates, it'll tell you there is no update when the server load is high, after all, everyone is updating. If you're s-on just make sure you're on complete stock, if not flash the stock ruu via hboot, if you used the leaked ICS, well your chances are nada unless you s-off.
what is s-on and s-off?
Had to manually update from hboot. Got a little scared as the phone turned off when I was updating. Pressed the power button and it came back to hboot then it updated from there.
Security ON or Security OFF, if you're off, you can downgrade and flash the official ICS or upgrade to any of the leaked or official files, while on the other hand if you're on, well you have to do everything officially and there's no downgrading allowed.

Everything is stock, so you should be clear. Just make sure your software version corresponds with one of tmo's stock software id's for GB.
You don't have to relock the BL by the way, you just have to be on stock recovery/software.

[Rant]It gets deleted because there are like 50 threads opened up every time a noob has an issue. This site is not www.noobsupportRus.com. It's a site for development. If u screw up your phone because you didn't read or know what you're doing, its not worthy of opening a new thread begging for help.
Now, if someone were to get the Amaze, they wouldn't know where to start because of all the clutter yapping about the same **** over and over.
If you're a noob unwilling to read, then leave ur phone stock or pay someone. Moderators have been asking for this over and over and over... It gets old.

this is odd to me. why wouldnt you flash the leak? do you think t-mobile magically cooks up ota's to send out to its subscribers? ota's come from the manufacturer (with the exception of GED's) and are sent to carriers for testing. the carrier then decides whether it will accept the ota or reject it. this is why you saw a revision in the build number from .1 to .3. .3 was accepted and pushed out to amaze owners, over-the-air.
the leak is just an earlier release of the final product. im not sure whats so hard to understand about that? you guys that were waiting, couldve been running the ota ics like 2 weeks ago...
