[Q] Strange and random vertical drops in battery graph. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, fellow SG2 owners. I have been experiencing something that I consider unusual, and I'd like to resolve - if possible - what I think is an issue/a bug...
A couple of days ago, I accidentally dropped my phone. It kind of flew right out of my hand. The SG2 was protected with a silicone case, and in addition to this, the floor was carpeted. I guess the the phone must've landed on a weak spot, because despite the case and the carpeted floor, my phone restarted itself.
After this unfortunate event, the phone has, as far as I'm concerned, restarted itself once (excluding the reboot that occurred right after the impact), despite being in standby.
In addition to this, the battery graph often shows vertical drops, which seems kind of weird. They mostly occur even when I'm not using the phone. I think they might be related to random reboots, but I'm not sure. (See the attached picture. There's a vertical drop in the first hours, and one at the end).
I don't have any applications that drain the battery life more than normal.
Has anyone else experienced something similar?
Do you think the random reboots and the vertical drops in the battery graph are related to the accident I had?
I'm going on a three-week-vacation to the States in two days, and I'd really like to resolve this potential issue before my departure.

I experienced this vertical drop too a few hours ago! My phone wouldn't unlock itself and seemed to be off (even though I never turned it off) so I took the battery out and put it back in. The vertical drop happened right after I turned my phone on. First time it happened to me. I posted a thread about my problem too.

Looks like reboots to me. If it drained while properly booted it would have been a continues line. Not sure what it means but your phone signal changes at the same time as the drops.
Let your battery drain till the phone turns itself off, the charge while off till full. It might help.

I appreciate the response, guys.
By the way, I haven't inserted my sim card yet, so there shouldn't be any phone signal at all.

Yes but the signal line shows a yellow line (instead red) at the same time as the drops.

Yup, that's why I think the drops are related to the reboots.
Is it possible that these reboots and battery drops are aftereffects of my accidental dropping?

does anyone know how to manually refresh the battery graph? Mine seems to refresh every 10-15min and sometimes longer. Any way of making it real time to match the time up the top vs battery graph time?

Me too
I've been getting these too and I've never dropped my phone. On occasion it has apparently entirely drained the battery. And it is always when I'm not using it. It's a bit like playing 'what's the time Mr Wolf' in that you have to catch it in the act. I did catch it once doing this and it was, to all intents and purposes, dead. Wouldn't turn on or off, only revived by taking the battery out. Once rebooted, the battery cliff was apparent on the graph - i'd just caught it before it completely emptied. I was advised to empty the battery and then charge it with the phone off for 8 hours and certainly the next day it didn't do it. But now I'm getting little drops creeping in again. Battery life isn't bad actually, I'm on 20+ hours at the moment, with one 10% vertical drop and two 2-3% drops in there. Strangely last night, the graph crept upwards.

Battery drains faster than usual

I have noticed my battery sucks lately. I know the battery isn't the greatest but I was able to get easily a day of use out if it. Now I can barely go a day. I purchased beautiful Widgets, battery indicator and xda app all last week And it seems after that is when my battery went to **** .I used launcher pro for a bit too but started having lag problems so I removed that. Today I uninstalled beautiful Widgets. I'm on wifi and in airplane mode. As I'm typing this I've lost %2 already. Wtf is going on? I have GPS Bluetooth and usually wifi off. I have use only 2G networks, sync only gmail and screen manually set and set to low 30sec TO.
Any suggestions?

Sounds like way more than that. I can certainly type a couple paragraphs before my % drops at all. You sure haven't installed something else? If not you could have a defect.? Possibly return it and get a new one?

Quick question, which ROM are you running? Ever since I switched over to leaked JI2, every couple days I notice that after running one of a few apps, the CPU just seems to go into overdrive. The phone gets really warm and the battery drains ridiculously fast. So fast that even plugging into my car charger won't charge the phone, even on idle. If I reboot, the phone cools down and the battery drain goes back to its normal, slow self.
I haven't narrowed it down to any specific app yet, but it seems to be either, Foursquare, Great Land Grab, or Bubble Blast.
Foursquare I have, I don't remember when I installed it. I am actually just running stock TW.

I get 15hrs... I am not ROOTED! I did the drain battery life process twice. This is with moderate usage. I am planning to do the drain battery process once a month cuz I hear it helps with battery life. Possible that u install something that's killing your battery.
Solution do the master reset if that doesn't help then it can be the battery is no good. I know that this is with the stock rom. If u are using another rom that's maybe the problem. U can try switchig roms to see if this is the problem. I hope this information has been helpful.
Does the master reset remove everything ? I have all my pics/videos on my phone meM. I have music and avatar on SD.

I've had it installed for a while But started using it as of late. GPS fails all the time now though for some reason. Idk. But its kind of frustrating

I have the same issue and i run system app n it doesn't show anything abnormal running. Its awfully frustrating i went from being good for 18hours to being in the red after 12 hours. I dropped 2% just writing this. I have only 84% left after 1.5hours this morning...and I have no service during my 1hour commute so I haven't used it. Standby is killing my battery.

It seems as though it drains faster in standby with nothing running. I removed FourSquare last night and have nothing running as far as widgets. I'm going to reboot and see. I've had it unplugged since 7am this morning, after a little over an hour I lost 2%.. not that bad I guess..

I've had this happen a few times. For me, it's usually because my battery status gets thrown off somehow. The phone would read that I have 55% battery life left, but it really only is at 25 or 30% and it always feels like it's draining fast. I usually turn off the phone, pull the battery out for a few seconds and then put it back it. When I turn on the phone the battery percentage is corrected and the phones seems to be back to normal battery use. I don't know why this happens.

This was suddenly happening to me today -- my battery started draining very quickly, mostly on standby (I usually have quite good battery life). No new or unusual apps installed in the past week (I don't use Foursquare).
I gave it a power-down/battery pull; no adjustment in the % as described in the post above, but it seems to be draining more normally now. Weird....

Same thing happens to me every couple days. Rebooting the phone fixes it every single time though, so it's not a big deal if I catch it in time. If I didn't catch it, I'd estimate my phone would be drained (even in standby) within 4 hours or so.

Same here, I rebooted after removing FS and some other apps/touitur and got 1day 13hrs on the next charge with pretty moderate use. So whatever it was, it's gone now. If it was FS hopefully it's fixed soon.
Had a similar experience, with battery % entering freefall every time I turned the phone on. Two things helped:
1. I did the drain cycle. Drain the battery completely till it shuts off and charge it to full while off. This does not 'fromat/form' the battery in any way it just helps the phone to calibrate the meter.
2. I uninstalled few apps that I suspected were draining the battery.
I advise you install JuicePlotter and see the graph of battery drain. You'll be able to tell if the phone is entering standby or not. Thanks to some culprit apps (still figuring out what it was exactly) my phone was not entering standby at all hence the crap battery life.

Something made my battery tank 40% in 20 minutes

Lol not sure what happened here.
I left my phone off charge to take a shower at 60%, came out and it was 20%?
Im on MIUI Rom 1.11.11
Is it just bad calibration or something?

Did you also see a significant drop in raw battery voltage?
Most likely the fuel gauge just glitched or reset. 40% in 20 minutes = 2 amperes drain, our device simply can't pull THAT much current, not even close.
Does if really equate to that much? I have seen a few cross ROM battery complaints ND I'm pointing my finger at the Facebook app

Fastest ive had mine drain down is when I left PocketCloud logged into a VNC session. It will run it down close to that fast.
Ya, Id take it off teh charger, reboot and see what it says after that.
When I was running CyanogenMod 7 this would happen all of the time to me. My battery would be at 98% and then suddenly after about 5 min, it would read 50%. I'm not really sure what caused this, but CyanogenMod 7 is the only ROM that I have had this issue with.
I'm now running Miui and I haven't ran across this issue yet.
I did read that calibrating your battery should solve this issue though.
Possibly similar to what a few of us encountered here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1325164
It had to have been pretty hot to draw that much current that quickly. It's a 1650mAh battery. It will provide 1.65A for an hour from fully-charged, until it is discharged. You lost 40% in, say 15 minutes. That's 160% in an hour. Or about a 2.6A rate. Nearly 10 Watts. Sammy spec's a 9 hour talk time rating on 3G. By comparison, this means normal battery usage during a phone call is about 0.18A. Think about how warm the phone gets during a call, and compare that to how warm it'd have to get if you were sucking juice at 14x the normal rate.
If it wasn't really hot, IMO, either there's something wrong with the battery or your issue is "cockpit error".
Minds did the same thing today. I think it was from a old theme I applied.
After the theme was converted my phone started acting funny.
The screen started to lag
Phone got extremely hot without even being touched, just laying on my bed.
Phone kept rebooting
I didn't have any of these issues until I added the theme

Constant data use on the TP

Well having bad luck with my new TP. Seemed that .21 update caused battery drain on my TP. Today I only used the TP for a total of 1 hour for sending email, few web pages and battery is at 14%. This no good for travel or to use on the road. It has been on battery for 10 hours, but out of the 10, only 1 hour has actually been on.
I do notice a few things. Even though screen is off, the right side top feels warm to the touch as if when you use the tablet. Now I am thinking something is running none stop. Any good apps to check this?
Also notice that even though I am in the home screen, I see the arrows in the wireless icon showing as if data is always going up and down. So this could explain the massive battery drain. My HTC Jetstream only does this when opening web pages or sending email, which the TP will do but keeps flashing as if is always sending something. I have restored 3 times already. Now I will restore and not install anything including my account to see if it is the TP that is defective.
Anyone seeing this with your TP? I am ready to take this tablet back.

could be .21 or could be battery is just bad. What does usage look like?
I am not having that issue at all. I unplugged mine around 7:30am on the 2nd and it is now 12:05am on the 4th and I am still at 36% with performance mode on most of the time. A lot of time has been spent playing Asphalt 6 even. Plus, my normal web browsing and just messing around. I do have a dock so I know that attributes to some of my excellent battery life but not an extreme amount. It is only said to extend it by 4 hours of use.

Seems like something else is causing the battery drain. Like I mentioned, the top right side back, you can actually feel it sort of warm, compared to the left or the complete back. I know that the back feels warm after you use it for a while, but shouldn't feel warm after sitting with screen off.
Too bad only used for about an 1 hour a few minutes today and just shut off on me as I was responding.
Id use CPU spy see if that shows anything weord but defo sounds as if a app is eating all ya battery up if u find nothing try flashing firmware next one down see what happens or couldbt u try a different kernel

Mine doesn't get warm and I still get about 6-8 hours as opposed to the 10-12 I got before.
I've been noticing that Maps/GPS always seems to be running even when I have GPS disabled.

Battery drain=bad batch of phones?

Being there's so much difference in battery life, I was curious if there might be a bad batch of phones. My phone gets great life and my dad's gets significantly less. He works about 2 blocks away from me and actually has a stronger signal in his building than I do at mine and his battery drops like a rock with nothing running. I'm rooted and froze the AT&T bloat. He's stock.
My serial number contains a PTM and the end number is in the 40000's. His serial number contains PZK and ends in a number in the 30000's. If you have time post your serial # info and how your battery life is.
I returned my ladies OG and now her battery life is better. Even b4 I rooted it drain was better from prior phone. Could be a batch. That's my lead as well

I'm contemplating returning my phone just in case of a 'bad batch,' but I'm afraid I'll get a phone that's even worse lol. I can't forever replace phones. I'm just trying to make it work.
Does this phone have the ability or need to reset battery stats? I know you couldn't do it, or it was unnecessary on the SGSII. Just curious if it's a calibration issue.

Resetting battery stats actually has no correlation with battery life whatsoever. It is not what controls the percentage that we see in screen. I believe it just tracks what apps or system files are or have been using up the battery. Battery stats gets an automatic reset whenever you reboot anyways.
For those with bad battery drain, just try and see what your serial numbers are n post it here to compare.

The battery life on my phone and seemingly most folks is great. Granted some folks probably live on the cusp of LTE coverage in their area and the radio is killing the battery while liking for signal (that happened to me with my EVO 4G).
If it were all devices, then only the battery life fanatics who shut down everything would be seeing 20hrs on a charge.
I think there's a bad batch of hardware or there.

my s/n: KPUU 40000's the high end. I dont think its a batch.
seems odd that those who are having the issue are not likely to make to 10hrs on a charge (often 1/2 that)...while others are bumping 20hrs (myself included).
i have 4 emails on constant sync, as well as, facebook, weather, xda and a chess. each day has a couple hours of screen time. 1hr each day of either Pandora or Audible. 20-50 text and @45min - 1hr of phone time. ... in case you think i put my phone in my pocket and forget about it.
granted, i do connect to wifi at home and work. and i live in an area where i have solid LTE coverage at all times.
audible and screen time are my worst battery drains.

We got ours off the box. Not sure where you'd get it in the phone.
Did a little more research. Set them side by side for an hour with screens at same brightness, always on, with Nexus live wallpaper running. Both were hooked into wifi and the microcell. Battery usage over a 1 hour period was pretty much identical (within 1%). Then did some web browsing and hit all the same links and drain was the same. We thought it maybe was just battery conditioning. When I first got it I did 2 full drains and recharges with it off. He did that about a week in and thought it was fixed.
I left and a couple hours later his battery started to tank. Only thing we noticed was his accelerometer hung for some reason and had 5 hours on. He hadn't used anything that should have turned it on so no idea why it got stuck. Turned it off and the battery usage slowed to what one would expect. Then it had another couple minute burst of dropping. that was the last I heard.

It does this even when sync is turned off. I've gone through the phone and I can't see any app running. Has anyone else noticed this?

I'm convinced there's a bad batch.
My replacement phone literally just ran all night. I had been awake backing up my system with Titanium, and it stalled before I went to bed. TB kept my phone running for 8 hours straight with the screen on and my phone is only at 18%.
If your battery life is ****, return it. Currently running Stock, rooted and unlocked with dormancy fix.
So this is what betterbatterystats is showing me. I'm using around 5.8% a hour that's not the best but that's not bad right?

[Q] total battery drain overnight

I charge my phone to 100% nightly and in the morning wake up to around 94% battery left which is great. Last night however, I charged it to 100% but for whatever reason woke in the middle of the night and opened my phone to check the time (I have a QuickCircle cover) and it was dead. The battery was at 0%. When I went to sleep there was nothing running on the phone and the screen was off....how can I find out what caused this?
thanks,
dk2463
I noticed something last night which got me a little paranoid, I killed all running apps and was in my home screen and even tho I didn't have anything running my data icon was spinning like crazy as if something was being downloaded or synced. I tried restarting my phone but nothing, I then tried killing most running processes but again nothing seemed to stop it.... I ended up taking out my battery and left my phone like that all night. I came here today to ask and talk about it and see if anyone else had this weird thing happen to them. I'm commenting on your post because I'm sure that if I would have left my phone on, the battery would have drained pretty quickly. So let me know if you notice some weird data activity going on on your device. Then again it could be just a coincidence.

I've learned ever since Sprint created that program that it causes more problems than it solves and have always left it off since my Galaxy S3.
My issue was Location Services. I did a test a few nights ago where I left my phone off the charger while I was sleeping. Went to bed at 100%, woke up to 100%. I used Greenify on some system apps including Location Services
Here's everything I greenified as well
I always disable connections optimizer. I think 6% is a little high for overnight loss. The g2 and g3 are 2 of the best phones as far a battery life at idle. My phone almost never drops a percent within the first 5 or so hours after charging unless I'm using it.
