Battery drain=bad batch of phones? - AT&T LG Optimus G

Being there's so much difference in battery life, I was curious if there might be a bad batch of phones. My phone gets great life and my dad's gets significantly less. He works about 2 blocks away from me and actually has a stronger signal in his building than I do at mine and his battery drops like a rock with nothing running. I'm rooted and froze the AT&T bloat. He's stock.
My serial number contains a PTM and the end number is in the 40000's. His serial number contains PZK and ends in a number in the 30000's. If you have time post your serial # info and how your battery life is.

I returned my ladies OG and now her battery life is better. Even b4 I rooted it drain was better from prior phone. Could be a batch. That's my lead as well

I'm contemplating returning my phone just in case of a 'bad batch,' but I'm afraid I'll get a phone that's even worse lol. I can't forever replace phones. I'm just trying to make it work.

Does this phone have the ability or need to reset battery stats? I know you couldn't do it, or it was unnecessary on the SGSII. Just curious if it's a calibration issue.

Resetting battery stats actually has no correlation with battery life whatsoever. It is not what controls the percentage that we see in screen. I believe it just tracks what apps or system files are or have been using up the battery. Battery stats gets an automatic reset whenever you reboot anyways.
For those with bad battery drain, just try and see what your serial numbers are n post it here to compare.

First time I read it, it blew my mind. Talk about placebo effect.

Jesus...its a SOFTWARE bug...not hardware. We ALL have it. We just use our phones differently.

Dude, you're blowing smoke off an asbestos fire. You have no idea what exactly is causing it.

Where do you go to get the serial number of the phone?

The battery life on my phone and seemingly most folks is great. Granted some folks probably live on the cusp of LTE coverage in their area and the radio is killing the battery while liking for signal (that happened to me with my EVO 4G).
If it were all devices, then only the battery life fanatics who shut down everything would be seeing 20hrs on a charge.
I think there's a bad batch of hardware or there.

crap battery
my s/n: KPUU 40000's the high end. I dont think its a batch.

seems odd that those who are having the issue are not likely to make to 10hrs on a charge (often 1/2 that)...while others are bumping 20hrs (myself included).
i have 4 emails on constant sync, as well as, facebook, weather, xda and a chess. each day has a couple hours of screen time. 1hr each day of either Pandora or Audible. 20-50 text and @45min - 1hr of phone time. ... in case you think i put my phone in my pocket and forget about it.
granted, i do connect to wifi at home and work. and i live in an area where i have solid LTE coverage at all times.
audible and screen time are my worst battery drains.

We got ours off the box. Not sure where you'd get it in the phone.
Did a little more research. Set them side by side for an hour with screens at same brightness, always on, with Nexus live wallpaper running. Both were hooked into wifi and the microcell. Battery usage over a 1 hour period was pretty much identical (within 1%). Then did some web browsing and hit all the same links and drain was the same. We thought it maybe was just battery conditioning. When I first got it I did 2 full drains and recharges with it off. He did that about a week in and thought it was fixed.
I left and a couple hours later his battery started to tank. Only thing we noticed was his accelerometer hung for some reason and had 5 hours on. He hadn't used anything that should have turned it on so no idea why it got stuck. Turned it off and the battery usage slowed to what one would expect. Then it had another couple minute burst of dropping. that was the last I heard.

The one thing I've notice about my phone is that when looking at my wireless icon in the notification bar, there is something transmitting 90% of the time (download it appears as it is just the bottom arrow blinking). It does this even when sync is turned off. I've gone through the phone and I can't see any app running. Has anyone else noticed this?

I'm convinced there's a bad batch.
My replacement phone literally just ran all night. I had been awake backing up my system with Titanium, and it stalled before I went to bed. TB kept my phone running for 8 hours straight with the screen on and my phone is only at 18%.
If your battery life is ****, return it. Currently running Stock, rooted and unlocked with dormancy fix.

So this is what betterbatterystats is showing me. I'm using around 5.8% a hour that's not the best but that's not bad right?

Battery drains faster than usual

I have noticed my battery sucks lately. I know the battery isn't the greatest but I was able to get easily a day of use out if it. Now I can barely go a day. I purchased beautiful Widgets, battery indicator and xda app all last week And it seems after that is when my battery went to **** .I used launcher pro for a bit too but started having lag problems so I removed that. Today I uninstalled beautiful Widgets. I'm on wifi and in airplane mode. As I'm typing this I've lost %2 already. Wtf is going on? I have GPS Bluetooth and usually wifi off. I have use only 2G networks, sync only gmail and screen manually set and set to low 30sec TO.
Any suggestions?

Quick question, which ROM are you running? Ever since I switched over to leaked JI2, every couple days I notice that after running one of a few apps, the CPU just seems to go into overdrive. The phone gets really warm and the battery drains ridiculously fast. So fast that even plugging into my car charger won't charge the phone, even on idle. If I reboot, the phone cools down and the battery drain goes back to its normal, slow self.
I haven't narrowed it down to any specific app yet, but it seems to be either, Foursquare, Great Land Grab, or Bubble Blast.
Foursquare I have, I don't remember when I installed it. I am actually just running stock TW.

I get 15hrs... I am not ROOTED! I did the drain battery life process twice. This is with moderate usage. I am planning to do the drain battery process once a month cuz I hear it helps with battery life. Possible that u install something that's killing your battery.
Solution do the master reset if that doesn't help then it can be the battery is no good. I know that this is with the stock rom. If u are using another rom that's maybe the problem. U can try switchig roms to see if this is the problem. I hope this information has been helpful.
Does the master reset remove everything ? I have all my pics/videos on my phone meM. I have music and avatar on SD.

It seems as though it drains faster in standby with nothing running. I removed FourSquare last night and have nothing running as far as widgets. I'm going to reboot and see. I've had it unplugged since 7am this morning, after a little over an hour I lost 2%.. not that bad I guess..

I've had this happen a few times. For me, it's usually because my battery status gets thrown off somehow. The phone would read that I have 55% battery life left, but it really only is at 25 or 30% and it always feels like it's draining fast. I usually turn off the phone, pull the battery out for a few seconds and then put it back it. When I turn on the phone the battery percentage is corrected and the phones seems to be back to normal battery use. I don't know why this happens.

This was suddenly happening to me today -- my battery started draining very quickly, mostly on standby (I usually have quite good battery life). No new or unusual apps installed in the past week (I don't use Foursquare).
I gave it a power-down/battery pull; no adjustment in the % as described in the post above, but it seems to be draining more normally now. Weird....

Same thing happens to me every couple days. Rebooting the phone fixes it every single time though, so it's not a big deal if I catch it in time. If I didn't catch it, I'd estimate my phone would be drained (even in standby) within 4 hours or so.

Same here, I rebooted after removing FS and some other apps/touitur and got 1day 13hrs on the next charge with pretty moderate use. So whatever it was, it's gone now. If it was FS hopefully it's fixed soon.
Had a similar experience, with battery % entering freefall every time I turned the phone on. Two things helped:
1. I did the drain cycle. Drain the battery completely till it shuts off and charge it to full while off. This does not 'fromat/form' the battery in any way it just helps the phone to calibrate the meter.
2. I uninstalled few apps that I suspected were draining the battery.
I advise you install JuicePlotter and see the graph of battery drain. You'll be able to tell if the phone is entering standby or not. Thanks to some culprit apps (still figuring out what it was exactly) my phone was not entering standby at all hence the crap battery life.

Are devices each to there own?

Ok so im quite new to android so im not 100% on the ins and outs on how what uses what battery and when.
Im running skyrom v9 and my battery was crap. To be honest its never been good. So i tried speedmod kernel and still got the same results.
Now iv disabled lockscreen widget and seems my battery is much better so iv put it down to that been the killer.
Iv read some people are using this app with no issues. My friend tried it with the same rom and kernel as me and it was fine.
Question is are these phones like performance independent? Like will each device act and behave differently to different thing or shud one sgs2 be the same as another sgs2 that is set up the same?
Long winded but i got there
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
They're mass produced, they should be exactly the same. There may be really really slight performance differences. And tiny differences in screen quality. But this may depend on the batch.
What would be the case most likely would be the fact that you have a faulty battery. But it seems you were able to fix most of your problems by getting rid of an app.
There's a lot of things influencing battery life, dude! Every little thing you do and use can get the juice sucked dry in a couple of hours.
I thought as much. Just seemed odd. And although getting rid of that app seemed to work, its now gone back to its useual gonna die soon self. Gonna try another battery i think.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
In a way they are all different .
Different users with different apps and settings plus a different and varied level of user intelligence . That means phone A can be poor for user ZZ but give it to user YY and its working well .

Well only thing i have left to try is battery. Im just waiting for my other to charge then i will swap and test it. Best i have had my battery is loosing 10% an hour. Which imo is a bad crack.

A good test is to stick it in flight mode and shut down as many apps as you possibly can. Then just leave it in standby for a couple of hours. You should really only lose 1-2% of your battery. If you do then you know something on the phone is responsible and you can start looking for and freezing the suspects.
I've had mine in standby for about 9 hours now (since I unplugged it) and it's at 91%, after only a few texts and emails. That's with data on most of the time and a little wifi earlier. I'm on 2.3.5 and KH3.

The phone is the same, it really is all in the user settings and usage styles. If you want to prove this, just reflash any ROM and kernel (they are not that different) and do a full wipe of the phone. Don't set up a Google account or any email accounts or install any launchers/apps/widgets. Use a plain black background/lockscreen. Just use the phone, SMS and other stock apps for a while. You should be getting around 3 days or more of battery life with moderate usage.
I've gotten 3+ days of battery life before, but nowadays I get less than 1 day. So when I read that other people are getting great battery life, it's not because their phone is different than mine. It's because I need to use Exchange for my office email, or because I want to run a certain widget, or have some extra notifications, etc. So all you can do is keep experimenting, updating, etc. until you find a combination that works well for you.

Official Battery Stats Thread

Hey all,
Didn't notice if there was one of these where everyone could post screenshots of their battery usage for the new Evo. I'm thinking we should have a central location to discuss this. Attached are my recent stats and I'm wondering if this is considered good battery life or if something is up with my phone. Mods, if one of these exists, please close and post link.

Seems low I haven't really put my battery through cycles yet but I'll post when I get a chance...I'm guessing from what I've seen so far about 4-5 hours screen on time with mix of internet/games
If you don't post your screen on time shot it really doesn't matter imho...but the 3 shots most people are putting up is perfect for comparison...just my two cents.

Edit: I've noticed over the last few months on ICS that listening to local music on head phones with screen off shows as awake time with solid blue line. Which does make sense, as the phone is not sleeping, but I dont think it reported/showed that way in gingerbread. You used to be able to just compare blue lines for determining a wakelock (other than music).

It actually might have something to do with all the monitoring your doing. I've found if I leave it alone and don't worry about things I easily get a whole day with all radios on 3 hours of screen time and still have about 40%. The battery life comes from the processor so letting it sleep is key.

I agree. But when I noticed that I was having bad battery life, I had to find out what the cause was. Sometimes it is a rogue app or a system component gone bonkers. Best to try and root it out and then go back to the non-monitoring.

That day I took those pics I was at work. So the wake time without the screen on was me playing podcasts with the screen off. No downloading them. But I seem to have the same result with or without the podcasts.

If you are getting poor battery life, and have disabled any apps, you may want to consider reenabling them to see if that helps. It seems counter intuitive, but I noticed a significant drop in battery life after disabling certain pre installed apps.

Bad battery drain issue

Hey guys please help. I barely use my phone and the battery still drains very quickly. If I charge it up to 100% before I go to sleep and then unplug it, by morning it is at 50%. The only sync option I have on is Gmail mail. I have 4G and wifi on but I really doubt those are killing my battery. In the time it took me to type this message I lost 2%. I can't live like this! Suggestions?
Ps for the first 2 or 3 days that I had my phone the battery life was fine. No issues.

I've been having the same issue on my att galaxy s3. I think there is a bug possibly when the phone is having issues maintaining a data connection. I always know when I am going to have an issue b/c the phone will stay warm even when I'm not using the phone. The only solution I have found is to turn off mobile data. Restarting the phone every day seems to help as well. There are a few other threads from people having the same issue. I'm guessing it's the data connection connecting and disconnecting over and over again. Cell standby will usually show up as taking up the most battery life.

I have At&t in San Francisco. We have very fast LTE here. I shouldn't have to turn it off. That's why I bought the phone.

Unfortunately the lte does drain your battery. So does the keyboard vibrating with every click. Get a app that with shut down background apps when your screen is off and temporally disable data. Works for me since I usually have at least 10 to 12 apps running that I forget to turn off.

Chrome in its current version has been identified as a big battery drain even after the app is closed. Some bug. I'm still using it though, nothing else works as well.

Note that is the International GSIII, but you seem to be having similar issues, as was I. I made a nandroid and flashed it, we will see. Last night my phone died in 7 hours with little to no use.

My cell standby does that too! I was wondering if I was the only one. Hell, I'm at 91% with only 15mins of screen on time and 2hrs off charger.

If you're using widgets that auto sync like fb, weather etc. By default they're set to sync every hour. The first day I got my phone I got 4 hours screen time and about 17 hours total on the battery, but I didn't have any widgets running. after I started running fb and weather it went to 1 hour screen time and about 9 hours total on the battery. Google+ was the main juice guzzler.

It really is a shame that we are disabling the design features of this awesome phone just to prolong the battery life. Are we really more concerned with battery life than the capabilities of this phone?

Yes, yes we are. Some of us, myself included, don't sit by a charger all day. Longer battery life is essential for me, at least until I get another battery.

Humans are really complicated. We asked for compactness and features up the "kazoo" and yet we look for less power consumption. Lmao.

AT&T lte is not a huge battery drain in my experience. Your battery usage is not normal so you either have a bunch of social media going crazy all the time or some rogue apps preventing deep sleep. Try using better battery stats to see if you can track things down.
Also forcing Wi-Fi to not use power save is s big drain did you do that? *#0011# menu Wi-Fi

My drain was the same as his the very first day I had my phone (before I installed any apps).

I had very bad battery life too on my first S3. Luckily I hard bricked it and got a new one right away. since it was only one week after the date of purchase they gave me a new one right in the store (Telus). This second one has amazing battery life with my same consumption. I find it weird too. about 30 hours with wifi and lte on and still got 24% left on it.

I've tried the wap.cingular apn and it wasn't significant change at all for me. YMMV.
Has anyone on this thread ever drained the battery completely and charge it back to 100%? It might help.

That's strange. Think I should exchange mine? I've had it 2 days.

No issues.

I also notice the abnormal Cell Standby consumption, it actually happens after I added my Outlook corporate email, with ActiveSync enabled. After I seting the sync option to every 1hr instead of ActiveSync, it went back to normal.
See if it helps you too. Good Luck.

Inaccurate battery percentage ?

Hey guys
Yesterday my phone was acting up. Badly.
I got to 50% with 1hour and 30 minutes screen on time. Absolutely terrible.
So i decided to reflash the firmware using PC companion. When finished it seemed fine. 2.5 hours with 10% left.
Now its.. I don't even know. Have a look yourselfs

Eh, what can I say, most battery monitors out there are horrible at keeping track of things, something you may have noticed if you have a laptop. Android's battery monitor is know to be absolutely worthless, and it lives its own life.
Remember that it takes a couple of charging cycles to get it back on track when you flash ROMs. And you should probably enable STAMINA if you had horrible battery life before you flashed. There's probably an app that has gone rouge, so check your data usage and download a wakelock detector.

What previous poster said.
Flashing ROM's is not the way to fix inaccurate battery reporting. It will probably just add more to the confusion as flashing ROM's is usually the reason for inaccurate battery readings.
What you need to do at this point is to run the phone completely dry once so it dies and then fully charge it. Then it should be fixed right away. Otherwise just let it be and it should be fixed in a couple of charges. Remember that running the phone completery dry too much aint good for the battery. Though they have built in protection so they never get completely dry. The real dangerous thing is to leave the phone totally dry without charge for longer amounts of time. That surely will damage your battery.
Yeah I had use stamina. It was weird sometimes I could get 6hours screen on time and other times 3
I downloaded wake lock detector and there was a wake lock that woke up the device over 20000 times. It seems to be gone now after re flashing.

I'll give it a whirl. I used to do that with my s3 but read it was bad for the phone so I stopped
