Okay so I'm new to the whole flashing thing. Two noobish questions.
It's it recommended to be on the same firmware as the custom rom I'm installing....
Also is it better to flash the custom rom via the pc or to flash using the android way via external sd?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
1. No, but it could be that you need the corresponding modem. But this depends.
2. Does not matter.
I would use cf-root if I were you and then after you rooted, make a backup in the recovery. That is the most important rule, backups
1. Modems are csc right?
2. Okay cheers
Also: can you recommend a good stable first custom rom that provides good battery and maybe assist me in flashing it?

no but read the instructions in the rom post

Custom roms are now flashable via CWM from SD card you cannot flash from external sd card .
Sample custom rom with instructions easy install and works .

KF4 now and i would personally follow the link i gave as its just been updated to KF4 .
Basics are to flash the file for root via Odin as per post 3 .
You then have Clockwork Mod recovery to allow backup of rom and flashing from sd card .
Copy the rom to your sd card boot into recovery and flash .

Has anyone tried flashing clockworkmod using rom manager app? how was it composted to manual flash? Thanks.

You cannot compost CWM .
Root and CWM post .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
ClockworkMod
CF-Root includes a custom version of CWM4. I always make custom versions, as the originals often do not take some Samsung specific things into account.
CF-Root/CWM4 is NOT compatible with ROM Manager! Manage/perform your backup/restores from CWM directly or using the CWM Manager application included with CF-Root
I'm sorry I don't know what you're saying. My phone is rooted already I only need to instal clockworkmod to install rom right? Please make it simple.

Make it simple if you root with CMW & Root you get Clockwork Mod thats the method most custom roms use .
Other methods not a clue .

Think jje might be saying keep it simple and use a kernel that has cwm. Chainfires cfroot kernels for instance.
Rom manager...why when you have cwm app already in cfroot.
Edit: like above post said. Cfroot is not compatible with Rom manager.
It's pretty simple.
Flash one of chainfires kernels with Odin. Now you have root and cwm accessible via up+home+power or cwm app.
Download the desired cwm installable package (eg Rom) to your internal sdcard.
Access cwm recovery mode like said above and follow the process EXACTLY as the instructions say in the thread where you downloaded the cwm installable package. Eg Rom
Hope this helps.

Ahh you're making a sense. I thought my tech language was bad do iv can't understand JJ. Anyway thanks guys I'll try the manual way.

THe thing I learned:
Never use ROM manager when using a ROM based on samsung firmware.
Use ROM manager when using AOSP ROM like CM7.
Here I am again guys, sorry to bother you with my quest to change rom.
OK, so I can't install cwm with Rom manager.
I've tried installing cwm using the cyanogenmod guide, with no success. It gave me this ''ERROR: Failed to access device. Libush error: -12"
At this point, I'm desperate to install any rom. So I tried to unroot then install a sercure kernel back in to update official firmware. Even that doesn't work. I can't install the secure kernel. I eneded up installing the insecure kernel just to get the phone to work. So please lead me to something that easy?
Install a CF-Root kernel via Odin. You get root and CWM all included so you can install ROMs and do whatever.Thats what people have been tryin to tell you.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
As that's great I'll try it asap. This is what I want to see simple and direct, you even provide a link.thanks a bunch dude.

Start reading on how to root and installing kernel with CWM Recovery. SGS kernel and recovery parttions are the same.
Easiest way is flash Chainfire's CF-Root kernel with Odin here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
There are many other ways; Intratech has a quick root guide in post #1 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Read, read and read some more until your confident to do it. Otherwise don't.
Please also read the "Stickies" in each forum and FAQ etc and search for answers BEFORE posting.
Best of luck
And if you really want to try ice cream sandwich, i will advice you to go with cm9 first as it delivers the smoothest of the experience with almost no force closes or random reboots. You arr aware of the fact that you are going to flash an expermental build right. Its not stable for daily use yet.

Hi all ,
I have currently on android ics 4.0.3 XXLP2 stock firmware .
I wanted to flash a rom . Mayb myhegen rom or dynamic rom .
I know there is clear instruction there .
Jus wanted to know , i can straight follow the instruction there or i need to flash the rom's android version (XWLP4) then follow the instruction.
Thanks in advance.
Sent from my GT-I9100 .
You can flash whatever rom you like over your existing rom. But follow the instructions for the rom you're going to flash to the letter; for example if it says to do a factory reset, do a factory reset, etc, etc.
root with flahing C-F root : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
then from CWM recovery you can flash...
Ok so i dont need to flash 4.0.3 XWLP4 stock firmware using odin ?
My android XXLP2 version has already rooted wif cf root .
Now i jus follow the instructions ?
Thanks again.

I had massive problems first time when i flashed, if you hit any bumps and cant start the phone after flashing, what i did was i flashed stock and then siyah kernel, put files on phone, boot to recovery and clear all data before flashing, that did the trick for my first flash
Hope you have a good time flashing and playing with your phone !
Hi. I am trying to root my friend's phone from france. I believe it is an international version because it says GT-i9300 at boot up. anyways i successfully rooted my phone and my cousin's phone using this method:
http://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s3-on-mac-osx/
On my friend's phone i was able to flash the recovery.img file but when i try to install the CMW-Superuser.zip file and it says verification failed.
anyways would i be able to flash a custom rom that is already rooted, even tho i was not able to flash the superuser zip file? would that be safe? i would like to try it but not sure if it's a BIG risk.
You flash most custom roms from CWM recovery .
F**** knows what you have flashed from another site .
Flash CF Root from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
read instructions for custom rom and flash it .

.. or simply use the Galaxy S3 Toolkit.

Yes you can. Only a few custom roms tho because only a few have an odin version of the rom. Cfroot is the easiest way

1. make a back up of your current firmware
2. In recovery, do a wipe of the cache then go to advanced and wipe daavik cache.
3. Using odin flash the ics firmware you like.
this tutorial should help .

You already made 2 threads about rooting.
So since you "need" to be on ics,you open up another thread about gb-ics.
Whats next,a thread about how to use odin,or a thread about cwm.Or how about a thread for flashing kernel,or a thread about a rom. Then a thread about "help phone bricked".
Do us all a favour and read you lazy git.

1. Root your phone by flashing a rooted kernel containing CWM recovery (e.g. SpeedMod for GB ROMs), if not already done.
2. Make a nandroid backup of your current GB system in CWM recovery. (So you can restore it if flashing does not work or you don't like the new ICS ROM and you want to go back to GB.)
3. Have a look here for the latest ICS stock ROMs => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487.
There is also a description in the first post how to flash the new stock ROM with Odin.
I recommend to flash a pre-rooted ICS stock ROM from here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1608071.
Download the ROM, extract the zip file, put the tar/md5 file into PDA section of Odin and flash it to your phone. (Be sure that no Kies process is running on your PC while flashing.)
4. Once you are on ICS and rooted, you can install TriangleAway (=> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114&highlight=triangleaway) app to reset the flash counter if needed.
5. Be happy and enjoy the new ICS ROM.
Good luck !
