[Q] Bricked Atrix, Dead battery. Now what? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have tried to flash my phone but have had no success due to the problems with Windows 7. While going through the flashing process, the battery died. Unlike the Samsung Captivate, the phone will not charge (not as a fact, only as I have noticed) unless it is "on". Therefore I am unable to continue the flashing process since I get the message: "Failed to boot 4
Starting RSD mode
Battery is too low to flash"
So my first question is: How do I charge the battery if I can't get the phone to boot?
My second question is: Can anybody help me unbrick the Atrix using Windows 7 IF I can get the battery charged?
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. I would rather send a donation to an xda helper than have to pay Motorola to get this phone working again.

Is it an actual brick or soft brick? What is the win7 problem your referring to? Please explain and maybe I could help?

I think you may have to get a development USB cable that actually powers the unit while flashing, I may be wrong but you can make the cable. I stand to be corrected.

I don't get it could't they just pull the battery to stop the boot loop then plug it into a wall charger? shouldnt that charge it?!

Just plug the phone to the charger, that's how u charge a battery.Phone does not need to boot up in order to charge.

Did this on my phone once, I just took my battery down to best buy and asked one of the guys to charge it in the demo unit. Went and got lunch and came back.
As stated the only way to charge it at this point is with a Dev cable
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App

If you connect directly the red wire of an usb cable where the battery connects to phone, phone will think is fully charged.off course the battery must be in its place correctly inserted.
Worked with milestone and atrix, did it myself

I exchanged batteries at the at&t store. I downloaded the latest version of rsd lite and this time it it ran through the flashing process and PASSED. However, when the Atrix tries to reboot, the same thing happens:
Failed to boot 4
starting RSD mode
If I am having successful flashing, what do I do now? PLEASE HELP!!
Thanks for your replies.

Your problems aren't with Windows 7.
Was your battery charged fully when you flashed?
What sbf are you trying to flash?
Your symptoms sound like those of a flash with the wrong sbf for your phone model.

Yea if you have a buddy or go to the store you could swap them batteries if they go for it.

I flashed this sbf,
OLYFR_U4_1.2.6_SIGNED_OLPSATTSPE_P012_HWolympus_1g_1FF.sbf
and this one.
OLYFR_U4_1.8.3_SIGNED_OLPSATTSPE_P013_HWolympus_1g_Service1FF.sbf
Both had the same results, both flashed successfully, both stated that they passed the flashing process, and both times I still get the "failed to boot 4" error message.

4.1.26 should flash fine. The 4.1.83 you have there is a service sbf. Need to get 4.1.57 on there before flashing that. When you are able to I would flash the 4.1.57 sbf, then OTA to 4.1.83. No need to do 4.1.26.
Beamed in from WinBorg 4G via XDA Premium app

Just flash the 1.5.7 sbf and bring the phone to att for warranty.

I've flashed from 1.26 to 1.83 with no issues several times with the service SBF. The "service" part just means it's not wiping /data.
The 1.26 SBF is a good starting point. The error you're getting is because the signature check is failing on the device. Where did you get the phone from?

I bought the phone from the at&t store. The problem started when my son pulled the usb cable from the computer while it was in the flashing process! (a serious no no). The good news is that I called Motorola about the issue and explained that the phone is rooted. I told them that I read in numerous forums (including Motorola's forums) that rooted phones would not be covered by the warranty. He put me on hold and checked with his supervisor then told me that they would not charge me for the repair! (thank GOD!) So my Atrix is on its way back to Motorola as I type.
Thanks to everyone who tried to help, these forums are great!
Also, I think Caelan T is right, the problem is not with Windows 7. A lot of people complained about the "grayed out" start button. None of this was a problem with the latest version of the RSDlite program from Motorola. It loaded the sbf file from the directory just fine. I did not need to change the file name, move it to the C: drive, or use the drag and drop method to make it start. So anyone with the grayed out start button problem, you need to search for the latest version. The "check for update" did not detect the newest version for me, I had to search elsewhere.

When I get the phone back, I figured I would have the latest version without root. Won't I need to flash 1.26 to start the Gladroot process all over again?

I Googled it but nothing in particular came up...

Same problem here.
If i left the atrix plugged to the charger wont charge the battery?
Thanks

the cable that comes with the atrix supplies power as it is used to charge the phone. i just soft bricked my phone and it eventually gave me the low battery message can't flash i began to panic and jumped on xda to look for help and i read that it doesn't charge while it is in this state, i pulled out the battery to turn it off since the computer was keeping it on. then put the battery back in i and plugged it in to the computer and it started to charge but didn't turn on its acting like its charging the green light is on but the phone isn't turning on I'm guessing its because i am running vmware and i set it to ask what os to use when i plug it in i didn't pick an option just left the window open and it looks like its charging... I'm praying that it really is charging ill keep you guys posted it if works

possible fix
how about you try taking the phone and pulling the plug and taking out the battery
after you do that odin back to stock
First you want to post in q&a. Second as to your phone does it do anything. Does the bottom row of lights come on. Does it boot to any screen? Third have you read the vibrant directory (bible)? Forth have you downloaded odin?

Check to see if your battery died somehow, but if you can't turn on your device even with a full battery, you have a real bricked phone.
Battery I fine, if I plug the charger in it doesn't charge or show that it's charging. How could this happen just from flashing a file?
Call tmobile and tell them that your phone said it was updating and once it restarted, it never came back on. They will have you check a few things and then send you a replacement for free. In the future be very careful when learning to mod your phone, ask questions when your not sure. This replacement trick will only get you a phone one time.
I was thinking to do that, only that my carrier is simple mobile, they do not offer insurance, sigh, I think I may be out of a phone
where did you get this update.zip?/
What update.zip did you flash?

No; it is unlikely that you are out of a phone. Try this method, either buying or making a USB "test jig." (You can make it if you know how to solder.)
http://board.teamwhiskey.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=209
If this does not work, there is another method that is expensive (but less than $500 for a new phone). You will need to find a technician with a "JTAG" test device who has a special bootloader software module from Samsung. The device uses an interface other than USB to access bootloader memory and downloads the bootloader file to the bootloader memory in order to boot the phone into a recovery environment.
The only way that your phone would be completely unrecoverable is if there was a hardware failure at the same time that you were playing around, which is unlikely.

Dude it's bricked....game over. Call tmobile and just tell them your phone doesn't turn on anymore, don't tell them how it happened, just that it stopped working. They will send you a replacement for free, if you're still under warranty it is. I bricked mine 2 weeks ago and got my replacement the next day. I tried EVERYTHING to get it back to life....but nothing. Sometimes it happens even though you follow all steps, especially if it messed around with your bootloader.
Good luck. It's no ones effen business what you say happened...most likely they do the same.
You shouldn't even be flashing the update.zip... you should be using like OCLF to do it for you. This should help:
http://androidspin.com/2010/08/09/how-to-restore-or-recover-your-samsung-vibrant/
I would STRONLGY suggest to listen what BruceElliott says, read and follow the directions carefully. In 99% cases you can recover just fine. It's very hard to truly brick vibrant...

You've got to be able to get into download mode to do that though. I think that's the problem.
I'd mess around with it for a bit and try all of the tips to get into download mode. I can't believe you'd hard brick it based on what you said. You are positive your battery is okay?
I had the same problem. It would not turn on at all. I called Samsung and they paid to send it back for warrenty repair. It takes 6 business days. They didn't even ask how it happened. I think the number was 800-samsung
Nah, you don't need a Jig just yet
I've ran into that problem MANY TIMES!! The first time it freaked me out too.
Take out the battery, take out the sim card. Leave it for about 5 minutes. Then do these steps:
- plugged the phone in without the battery
- Hold down the 2 volume buttons
- As you're holding those 2 buttons down, insert the batter
- You should be in download mode
- Proceed with Odin
Can you tell us what update.zip you used? Good luck!

[?] Atrix -> modem did not power up (0) then Starting RSD protocol support

Hello All,
I am getting the above error message after a power cycle on my Atrix. It is on the 2.2.2 Android with the latest updated without any special MOD's other than the fact that it was rooted and had a custom APN ...
So after a battery pull (I had to check the back of the phone) then I get modem did not power up (0) message and the phone waits for RSD ...
I downloaded the OLYFR_U4_1.5.2_SIGNED and tried to flash the sbf using the RSDLite it processed without any error, but after the reboot I still get the same message.
Any thoughts or words of advise?!

I bought an Atrix off of Craigslist that said it had water damage and it's doing the Same thing.. I've managed to Unlock the bootloader and install CWM, going to see if i can flash a rom to it... I'm new to Moto's so i'm struggling a bit
I'll let you know if i figure anything out..
Suggestions are welcome from all
Edit*
So i've tried flashing a ROM
I've flashed the gingerbread via this method and I got zero errors, but when the phone boots up it still says
Modem did not power up (0)
Starting RSD protocol support
I have no idea what to try next..
Anyone?
well, i've got it to boot up by holding down the volume when powering on and going to the:
BP HW Diag & Boot AP
Baseband is blank so it definitely needs a radio flashed to it.. Which i tried and it didn't work since it won't boot up correctly.. I've got a SDcard ordered going to wait till then to try some more..
I'm guessing the radio is actually damaged and nothing you can flash will fix it because it is a physical problem. I'd say you turn it in for warranty.

hmm.. wish i would have thought about that before unlocking the bootloader.. Also i bought mine off of craigslist and it was water damaged..
So if i can't fix it i guess i'll just have to sell it to someone else that wants to do something with it...
I actually bought 2 off craigslist yesterday, luckily the other one is in perfect condition, just did the OTA to gingerbread
Looking forward to seeing cm7 available for the Atrix
I can't say i've had the water damage problem, however my phone used to do this all the time. My issue was i was using a micro sim card (i cut it myself), and if the sim card slid it would give me that error message.

that would be VERY nice to know... i could deal with that.. should be able to still recoup what i have in it and "maybe" make a few $'s..
as far as the SIM.. i pulled mine out of my inspire 4G and it's the same error. So it's definitely not that in this case.. wish it was that easy though
I also started having this problem and I'm getting very worried.
EDIT: Now it says 'battery is too low to flash' and it is plugged into mains! I can't even charge my phone anymore!?
PLEASE HELP!!
Have you flashed anything prior to this? What I mean is what did you flash before you got this error? And did you flash on a low battery?

I never used to get this before but after I flashed CM7, I started getting this error.
Last time I got this error, I simple plugged my phone into mains and it started charging. After that, it booted.
But now, nothing works. My phone doesn't even charge if its plugged in and I even tried using my dads battery but I still get the error.
Shall I flash a different radio? Or shall I go back to Blur-based Roms?
I was just wondering if anybody has fixed the "modem did not power up (0)" problem?
Thanks!
*Bump*
I have a Photon, but I'm getting the same error, right after I flashed the SBF for my phone. Removing the SIM card got it to boot, but I haven't tried putting it back in yet. I know the Atrix actually requires the SIM card, unlike the Photon (Sprint CDMA phone but global capable) but I would try booting without it, and then sticking it back in and booting again.

I'm wondering as well.. Plagued with this problem and 250 for warranty.
If u go in Q&A section, there's already an answer.
And The answer is to get it in warranty :v
There isn't a fix, that's a hardware issue
I have found if you hold volume down when booting and change to "Boot (No BP)", no SIM is required to utilize the operating system. (obviously you cant make calls though)
Modem sometimes powers up.
My phone is finicky with it. Sometimes it says modem did not power up, and then other times it doesn't. This might seem weird but when I squeeze the bottom of my phone it will start working and does NOT give me the message. But it freezes from the problem it has been having.
I have unlocked and rooted my phone, it has been a long time before the message showed up. Does Motorola know about this happening to their phones? And does anyone know if people would want to but the phone on craigslist or ebay or something?
I just get this problem too.. any fix for this at the moment?

Hardware issue. There is no fix , only if u know how to replace parts in the phone or want to send it to warranty.
now it can be fixed.. here is the solutions
put your battery in your phone, and plug it into the charger.
When the Motorola logo appears, hold the Volume Down button and boot options will appear.
Hit the volume down button until you see "Boot Android (No BP)". Press the Volume Up button. It will say "Cold Booting Linux..."
Screen will reset, and you'll see your battery begin to charge.

So i have the cwm bootloader and i have a backup saved, i have just flashed jokers skinnyrom and it boots up to "failed to boot 2, starting RSD mode" ive tried getting hard reset to worl (atleast how i think you do it), and it wouldnt. all i need is to get into my bootloader to restore please help! You can always SBF the phone back to stock if what you have done with the phone has put you into a continuous loop. Info on this can be seen in the link below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202666
The gist is you will want to use RSD light have the SBF file and then flash it .
1) Fire off RSD lite, select the SBF you need 198_7 or 198_6 either or.
2) Hold down power and vol up till RSD mode comes up
3) Plug into usb then start the flashing sequence.. ( the whole process will take a while)
4) The process is done when RSD lite says manually power up the phone.. You may need to take the back off and pull the battery to restart it incase it doesnt power up on its own.
The files can be downloaded from.

These files are compliments of Shabbypenguin since he is the one who posted this repository.
Until you are ready for that SBF, pull your battery and don't use it. You need as much juice as possible, because that error causes your phone not to charge the battery. If your battery is below 50%, you won't be able to do the SBF. You will have to go to Radioshack or someplace like that and buy a charger for the battery only, or if you know someone else with a Photon, trade them batteries while you do this SBF as shown above.
I have done an sbf flash with as little as 53percent battery. I was a bit nervous about it but it went without any incident. But it could be best to air upon caution depending how you feel about it.

Stuck at boot screen.. (couldnt find anything that matches problem with search)

Alright So I bought this Atrix for 50 bucks. Guy was having problems and coulnt figure it out. Its rooted and unlocked. When I plug the charger into it (the stock wall charger. not to the computer) it goes to the M boot screen. I can't get to any other screen to come up. When I hold the volume buttons down, I get "Cant start RSD Battery too low to flash". also, When I plug it in, The green LED lights up for a second then turns off as it goes to the Motorola screen. I can't turn it on either with just the battery. any Ideas?

I had this problem just last night. I searched around xda and the internet, and came upon this: http://www.atrixforums.com/forum/mo...e-rsd-lite-flash-sbf-file-motorola-atrix.html
Give it a shot. If it doesn't turn on now, what's the worse that'll happen by trying this?
Just charge the battery and flash a SBF with RSDLite.
Make sure that you don't downgrade the ROM. Read sticky for more info about hardbricking risks.

What SBF file do I need? Im not sure what is on the phone and I dont wanna Brick it if I can avoid it.
Go the latest SBF(the latest being 2.3.6/4.5.141 if you have an ATT atrix. Otherwise a full list of SBF files are here http://www.filefactory.com/f/89f588286a560e39/ ). Bricking occured when downgrading, so long as you upgrade or stay the same you should be fine.

Thanks, admin?
I bit the bullet and did it. All was going good till my cat jumped on my computer desk and then failed saying something about switching to BP or something along those lines. Now I cant get the phone is RSD again
Was your battery charged enough? Sometimes if your battery is low it won't complete the flash.
What directory is your sbf file located at? Sometimes it won't work unless you put it directly in the C:\ drive.
Have you got the latest RSDlite?
What SBF did you flash?
Did you use the usb ports at the back of the pc?
If you can't get it in RSD again then I suggest giving it a charge for an hour or so and trying again later. Also check the md5 of the sbf file to check that the file is correct. Sometimes the 'Switch phone to BP Pass through mode' can be fixed just from trying a different usb port or computer.

congratulations your mobile device is sucessfully bricked.
mine did[(do)will] the same, you have to take it to the assistance, i know what must be done, the assistance guys told me, but it can only be done by them.
so, you better hope you dont have the same problem as mine. [but if you got the error talking about didnt booting radio////failed to switch to BP(or some s**t like that) you probably have it, and only motorola can fix it.]

Have you googled the error? If you have, you'd find that it is a common error and I haven't seen any cases where they didn't eventually get fixed. OP just needs to get back in to RSD and have another go. The guys from 'assistance' don't know what they're doing, they'll take any reason to say that 'only motorola can fix it' because they don't know any better.

I wold haVE GOOGLED IT BUT RSD lite closed on me. I would get back into RSD but I can't get the phone back into it. I power on and hold the volume buttons and it doesnt do anything.
And also now while its stuck on the Motorola boot screen, Unlocked is missing from the corner like it use to be there.
Well after just fidiling around with it, it just started working. After about 45 minutes of just sitting there on the motorola screen, it booted up. Now its time to set it up all the way and put CM7 on it im guess.
I wasn't talking to you about googling the error, I was talking to the guy who had said that your phone was bricked when clearly it wasn't. The error would have been a fail at 'Switching Device to BP Pass Through' stage which does not mean you're device is bricked.
Anyway, good to see you fixed it. And the unlocked text goes away when you flash an SBF, that's normal. Get cm10 on it
I went back through and kind of got that after the fact haha. Im glad I got it fixed also too. Not I can get rid of the dreaded Iphone 4 :\ and be back where I belong. Is there a stable CM10 for it? I havent gotten to look around much yet since I was fixing the main problem.

[Q] Installed cm10 now trouble with sbf to 2.3.4

Hello,
I recently bought a droid x2 to use on straight talk. The stock system was fairly laggy so I rooted it and installed eclipse 2.3. That was better but still unacceptably laggy. From there I thought I would give cm10 a shot. Based on what I read I figured it would be faster. I sbf'd my 2.3.5 x2 to 2.3.4. Rooted it and installed cm10. No problems. CM10 is actually the best I have tried thus far, however I could not get certain apps to run (I know this is known with cm10) and the alternatives to the app I want do not run either. So I thought I would give cm7 a shot. I started rsd lite picked the correct sbf, turned off my phone; held the power button while holding up to get into rsd mode on the phone. Then connected it to the computer. RSD saw it and I pressed start. The program went through the first phase fine; rebooted then only made it to 30% of the second phase and failed. I've tried rebooting computer, taking the battery out and letting it sit and now I fear the phone is bricked. Also I cannot seem to get it to charge; now when the phone boots up it says boot up failed (or something like that) then underneath that text will say rsd mode then underneath that it says not enough power to flash. Besides getting an external charger, is there a way around this?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you
Phone will not charge without firmware, need a charged battery or fastboot cable

Thank you for the fast response man. I just ordered a cable off ebay. You wouldn't happen to have an idea as to what (if anything) I did wrong? I sbf'd the device twice now with no issues and then this happened.
Thank you again for the fast response..

bad usb cable, drivers issue, bad usb port (PC or DX2), bad sbf download, battery was too low but didn't get the warning right away, battery is old and not reliable...
verify md5 checksum for sbf https://sites.google.com/site/sdshadowscollection/home/hash-checksums
verify drivers
use rear usb ports on desktop pc, often front usb ports are not good for flashing
try a different usb cable
fully charge battery before flashing, if battery is more than 2 years old, it should be replaced
use a different RSD Lite version
use DX2 ezSBF it runs from a bootable cd/usb drive using a linux version called Slitaz (so no driver issues)
edit:
Flashing Stock 2.3.5 Firmware with moto-fastboot.exe
Hey Thanks again. I know you probably get tired of answering questions like mine, but your knowledge is greatly appreciated.
