Easiest way to root a Verizon 2.2.1 Fascinate? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've got a little experience rooting the galaxy S, but on my girlfriend's Vibrant it was through a one click app in the market. I couldn't find a similar app for my new Fascinate and google wasn't helping too much. Can someone point me in the direction of the easiest method of rooting a 2.2.1 Verizon Fascinate please? I checked the stickies and didn't see it mentioned. Thanks in advance!

You could just flash Com Rom 2.0 and it'll root your phone.

First download Community rom 2.0 (make sure it is one that comes with a kernel, either OTB or pbj), and put it on your sd card.
Next, download one of these recoveries and flash it via odin :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046905
Pull battery, odin the recovery in the PDA button in odin. When thats done, battery back in, hold volume up+down+power to enter cwm recovery. Flash the community rom and bingo.

I rooted my phone with this :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Then flashed one of these using Odin: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046905

What method do you use to keep app data and texts and such? I'm going to be doing this for a friend and with the Epic I had 1 reboot where I could dowload titanium after rooting and backup my stuff. Do you use the backup in Clockwork? She'll kill me if she loses all here data agaon (she was having screen flicker issues.) Telling her that she could backup her stuff is one of the main reasons she wants this. Also, I hear Verizon also uses Carrier IQ in their Roms. Has it been removed in either Community Rom or Evil Fascinate? We're very anti-CIQ in our forum.

Is 2.2.1 the latest fully updated version that unrooted fascinates are running? (Mine reads UKB 2.0, just curious as I forgot what mine was before flashing).

[Q] stock eris rooting Q's

well theres a lot of old info out there, having a hard time sorting some of this stuff out!
I have a stock Eris that came from Verizon with 2.1 on it already. I'd like to root it, but does that mean I have to install a custom ROM? or is there a way to get root with the ROM thats already on the phone? Sorry noob questions I know but I've read over the adb command stuff and it sound easy, but I'd like some clarification on what each command does and what each file is for, etc...I have the sdk set up already on my computer. I hear stuff about bootloader versions, radio versions and stuff too, does this stuff get modified as well during this process? and if so, is there a way to revert to 100% stock if I have to send it in for warranty or insurance? keep in mind this phone already had 2.1 from verizon, if that matters.
You can root your phone using jcase's 1 click root app from the market all you have to do is run the app, reboot into recovery by holding power and volume up or down(mine ia volume up my roomates is volume down) and flash the rootme.zip file the app places on your sd card. Doing this will root your current os and you will not lose any data. At that point you can wipe and flash a custom rom instead of the rootme.zip by having one downloaded and already on your sd card. Make sure its not in a folder. If you want to do things like overclocking you will need a custom rom as the stock kernel does not support it. You can also just flash a new kernel its the same as flashing a rom. Anyway check out jcase one click root thread in the eris development section for more detailed instructions and on youtube lostelement has some great videos showing how to root the eris and flash a rom step by step. Hope this helps.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
can you still root this eris using the command terminal? or do I have to do the 1-click method? and as far as returning the phone to 100% stock, is there a RUU program that will restore everything to stock? I've seen some threads but it seems like many of the download links are getting broken for some reason?
EDIT: also, jcase's 1-click method installs Amon's recovery correct? and this file..."rootme.zip" is this like a "patch" that is applied to the current OS to provide root, whereas flashing a new custom rom will delete and replace everything but this custom rom has been writtn to provide root access already? sorry so many questions, just trying to get a handle on this before I try it and do something stupid/expensive haha
Yes there are ruu's to go back to stock. I believe you can still use the terminal but one click root is easier and it does give you amon ra recovery. Flashing rootme.zip will root your stock os and give you superuser permissions app which allows you to manage what apps are granted root access.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
And customs roms are all ready to for root. If your flashing a custom rom you don't need to flash rootme.zip.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
Does flashing custom roms change the hboot version or the radio version? Also for some reason when I do the vol-up+end when I power on it shows a screen with a red triangle with an exclamation point, is this normal until I flash the new recovery image?
Yea that's normal until you flash a new recovery and the roms don't affect the radio or hboot. They must be flashed separately. Be very careful flashing a radio. A bad radio flash is the easiest way to brick your phone.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
probably wont touch the radio or hboot, not many ppl seem to need to. as far as the RUU goes, it will re-flash the recovery and the rom back to the same as they were out-of-box correct? wondering if anybody has a link to this file, all links i've found are broken
I haven't had to use it but from what I understand its an executable file that you run on your pc while your phone is plugged in via usb. If you need it im sure someone would be able to post a fresh link or email it to you.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
thx steve for all your help so far If anybody has a link to the RUU for the official original 2.1 eris, email it to me or link in this thread, also wondering if theres a link to the official 2.1 ROM (the non-root version and not the leak versions, the "official" OTA is what I mean.) In case something bad happens with a ROM I install that i have the original to flash, thay way I can keep Amon's recovery on the phone instead of using the RUU, personally having a hard time finding it. seems liek all the stock roms are labeled PB00IMG?
After you root, in amonra you can do a nandroid backup, which will completely back up everything on your phone to your sd card. If you don't like a rom or are having problems you can just recover your backup and your phone will be as it was when you made the backup. I keep nandroids of a few different roms and just switch between them sometimes.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
So is there any advantage at all to being rooted on the stock rom? That's where I am now. I will probably stay there for a while until I decide what ROM I want to try. I installed an overclocking widget from the marketplace just to try it out, but from the sounds of this thread, its a waste of time with the stock rom.
Rooted on a stock Rom sucks. Battery life compared to a froyo based Rom is exponentially better imo. Nonsensikal vanilla v7 was the Rom of choice but I'm back to stock because I have to send the phone back to VZW

It's really not that difficult one click Eris root run rootme.zip download and extract the Rom of your choice. Run amon ras recovery nandroid backup wipe flash new Rom and voila. Easy as pie.
Sent from my Eris using XDA App
I did the one click Eris root already, and just applied the rootme.zip. So installing a new rom would mean copying it to the root of the SD card, rebooting and holding down the volume key and then picking that new zip file, correct? I don't know what that amon ras recovery thingy is. Is that part of rom installation, or something that I need to acquire separately?
You need to copy the Rom to your SD card and use estrongs file explorer download from market and long press on the .zip file it will pull up a menu that gives you some options. Extract from the .zip file and hit ok no new path is needed. Now that yuu have the file on your SD card reboot and go to recovery nandroid backup then wipe then flash from zip. After it unpacked and loads then it will prompt you to reboot hit okay and let it do its thing. I'm going to end all this with saying double check the forums for how tos and I'm not responsible for a bricked phone do this at your own risk but have fun itsreally not that difficult

To flash or not to flash?

So for a while now ive been debating if i should flash my phone with a new rom (or kernel) or if i should just keep it safe and just keep it rooted with nothing else.
Now the biggest thing thats keeping from flashing it is that i really dont know how hard it would be to get it back to stock. Ive been doing my hmwk and been reading through the forums but still im a little lost.
So any help / advice would be welcomed.

If you have read how to return to stock from a soft brick and are still lost, then I'd say definitely no!
Download Fusion if you do not want TouchWiz, or Bionix if you do. Stick with the stock kernel (for now).
Make sure you have Rom Manager and clockwork recovery working.
install titanium backup and backup all apps + data (I would not bother with system data).
Do a nandroid backup.
Flash your Fusion/Bionix.
If you ever want to go back, just restore your nandroid backup.
( All of these steps are in my signature in much greater detail if needed )
+1 to what s15274n posted.
The first time is always the most nerve-wracking. You've got a great phone, everything works great, & it wasn't cheap. The last thing you want to do is "do something" that might mess it up right? I was in that boat for a while and when I did flash a ROM, I was like..."I was worried why?"
It's pretty simple, I just made sure to sync my contacts/calendar, used AppBrain to sync my apps (you can use Titanium Backup to to this too but I didn't need/want to save any data) and then I was good to go.
I downloaded TGA's One Click Root/Unroot. Then after I made sure SuperUser was installed in the App Drawer I downloaded ROM Manager (Free from the Market), installed it, & ran it.
After that I clicked on ClockWork Recovery inside the app so it would download/install (it's a separate download but dependent upon ROM Manager). After that, I rebooted into recovery from within the ROM Manager. Followed the directions on the menu to perform a nandroid backup then I was good to go.
The directions for installing ROMs are in the beginning of all the ROMs threads plus there's a lot of good information in the Tip & Tricks sticky thread in General and the Team Whiskey site (Home of the Bionix ROMs) has a good writeup.
I tend to stick with the non-Froyo ROMs just because I use the GPS daily and we don't have the GPS drivers for Froyo yet. Eugene's Hybrid & Bionix Fusion are great ROMs to start with. Just pick one with the attributes you like and you won't go wrong.
Hope this helps a bit & have fun flashing,
~SB
Thank you all for your advice and help. I already downloaded Rom Manager and titanium back up all i have to do now is pick a rom and go for it...and i think i will actually pick one and do it later today.

Flash away my friend. I must warn you that flashing is addictive!!
Always do a Nandroid backup before Flashing. If you screw up, you can always ODIN back to Stock. ODIN is your friend!!
When flashing, I prefer to flash through Clockwork Mod. You can flash through ODIN too but Clockwork is easier.
I would also suggest making sure you can get into Download mode without adb or terminal commands as well.
If you can't then you'll want to check the bible on the method to fix the hardware lock.
Also, if you haven't yet upgraded your phone to JI6, you should SIM unlock your phone (I believe you lose this option when you go to JI6) and backup the folder that has your unlock (should also be in the bible). You may never need it, but it's definitely a nice option to have, especially on a phone that can get the AT&T 3g signal (well, one radio band of it anyways).
Hey guys so I flashed my phone earlier today using the bionix stock rom. Everything went great but then I tried going back to stock using nandroid and my phone ended being stuck at the Vibrant logo screen. After realizing that it was stuck I just went back to the bionix rom. Anyone know why nandroid wasn't able to restore me back to my back up?
Also if I wanted to install another rom would I just download it and install it or would I would have to go back to stock then flash it??
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Sounds like you had the jac or kk kernel, and not the stock.
Nandroid doesn't restore the kernel, so you have to flash the stock kernel before.
Does the stock bionix come with a different kernel? Because I thought my kernel didn't change. I checked before and after flashing and my kernel was the same?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Nope...stock Bionix is the regular JI6 kernel.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
even if you have the stock kernel of a custom Rom. when you do a nandroid restore your phone will be soft bricked. they say that after you restore, you have to flash the stock kernel too in the recovery mode.

If this is the route you want to take (I highly recommend it as well), I would check out this thread or even this thread (although it is on Android Central, so you will need to make an account to see all the links if you don't already have one). They are pretty similar (the latter is a bit overboard on detail, but that can be a good thing if you are new to the process) and should at least get you started on learning what it is you need to learn to ultimately wind up at ComRom 2.1. I hope this helps!

Evil Fascination and Community Rom are two different roms and both will root your phone when flashed... this is how mine's set up for ComRom and it works flawlessly:
1) download odin, samsung mobile phone drivers, debloated/debinged/deodexed EB01 all in one package, CWR3-Voodoo, and ComRom 2.0 package of your choice and the 2.1 patch... place ComRom and its patch onto your sd card
2) use odin to install EB01
3) boot up phone once to let it format itself
4) power off phone and use odin to then install CWR3-Voodoo
5) boot straight into CWR, wipe data/cache/dalvik 3 times each and assuming you don't want to backup/restore data (I usually just use Titanium Backup app from the market) proceed to install .zip of ComRom 2.0
6) select reboot phone and let it boot up, it may take a while the first time
7) congrats, you're rooted and running ComRom 2.0
8) to install the patch simply hold the power button down until the menu pops up, select recovery
9) this will boot you into CWR again, no data/cache wipe necessary simply install .zip ComRom 2.1 patch then reboot phone again
10) congrats now you're rooted, voodoo'd, and running the latest ComRom
hope this helps, that's about as simple and short as I can make it

yeah if you're rooted and running the baseband you want (ED01 or whatever) the boot into CWR and flash the rom you want... you're going to need to do a data/cache/dalvik wipe before flashing the initial ComRom 2.0 package so make any backups you want.. once its done installing reboot phone to make sure everything works right, then boot back into recovery and flash the patch (no wiping or anything needed) any questions or problems be sure to post them

[Q] Cant get clockwork to stay

Hey All,
I'm new here but I've been reading threads. I've had and OG droid up till now and was running CM 6.1.1.
I've rooted my fascinate using SuperOneClick and I was able to make a backup once using clockwork mod right after I pushed it to the phone with ODIN but since then it comes up with the stock recovery. I tried to use and update zip to push CWM but that errors out and I have to do a battery pull.
I wanted to post in the threads where I got the tar and zip files but can't since i don't have 10 posts.
All of that said does anyone have a link to a permanent CWM either as a tar or zip. Or am I not understanding how to do this with a samsung phone.
Thanks!
Joe
After you flash clockwork you have to flash either a new kernel or a new rom or recovery will reset to stock.

The stock kernel reflashes the recovery every boot, so after you enter CW you must flash a new kernel to keep it.

yeah should have stated that. but back to the question i asked. can i use the odin package and flash it or could something go wrong
Shouldn't be any issues as I'm pretty sure the PDA file contains the files to repartion. But I've never had to flash a phone through Odin to get off cyanogenmod. I've always run a backup of the previous rom I was on before I flashed cyanogenmod.
I've never done what you're looking at doing, so I'm cautious to tell anyone to do something I haven't done.
I wish the cyanogenmod forum had better instructions to revert to something else.

i just talked to entropy and he said that all i have to do is
2a.) Flash Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Non-rooted System Package with Modem using Odin3 One-Click Downloader (Windows)
Download the "Odin3 One-Click Downloader Stock I-777 UCKH7 No Bootloaders" package from MultiUpload or MegaUpload. Extract the contents of the zip file to a directory on your hard disk drive. This is a One-Click version of "Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + non-rooted system package" plus stock modem from the development forum. (Contains stock zImage, factoryfs.img and modem.bin.)
Start the Odin3 One-Click Downloader program by double clicking on "I777UCKH7 OCD No BL.exe".
Now Enter Download Mode:
With the phone powered off, plug in the usb cable while holding the vol up + vol down buttons (but not the power button).
When the warning screen appears, press Volume up to continue into download mode.
In Odin, the small edit box in the upper left corner will turn yellow, and say something like [0:COM8].
Click Start. Watch the progress bar advance in green while the message box in the lower area describes the steps. When the flash is finished, the top left larger edit box will turn green and say PASS! and your phone will automatically reboot.
Unplug the usb cable from you phone after it boots up. Success. You're Bone Stock.
and ill be good
i got this from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313659
Good deal. Entropy is pretty awesome in helping people out.

ok, i know i'm a little behind with my reply, but it might be helpful to some one else who might have problems with SIM RECOGNITION
once again, it is not about receiving ATT DATA PLAN, it is about your phone NOT recognizing any sim card.
i flashed my skyrocket with ODIN once click ICS, which was very easy. however my DATA plan did not work, so i installed many different modems and no luck. i tried to change different ROMs and no luck.
so i went back to stock ROM, and no luck, then i tried to flash it again with same ODIN one click ICS that i used in the beggining, and i have my phone recognizing my SIM card just fine.
however, still no data plan, i guess it would be on att settings, but not sure which one to use.
