Evo 3d TO Galaxy S2 - HTC EVO 3D

I was debating ordering the evo 3d through sprint premier tonight, but I'm really interested in the s2, i'm on an older phone that I just can't hold for another month..
If the S2 is released on July 24th as expected, does anyone see any issues with switching to it when it may be just barely outside of the 30-day period?

I thought they said the s2 was going to be out around christmas time.

It's rumored that the phone will come out July 24th, but I wouldn't make plans according to that.
There's a 30 day satisfaction guarantee anywhere you buy, but if you exchange the phone with Sprint or Sprint.com, they will charge a $35 restocking fee. If you do so with BestBuy or RadioShack, there is no fee.
But if you order the E3d tonight, and the Within (GS2) comes out July 24th, it'll be just 3 days outside your 30 day period.

Yea, I guess i'm curious as to how lax they are with that policy. I've never worked with it before.

The SGS2 July 24 rumor is a highly suspect date. At this time, I believe that the rumor originated from one blog, mentoining two "independent" sources, both of which were Sprint employees. We haven't heard anything else since that time to confirm the information. There was one tidbit, however, that identified a different Samsung phone that might be released on the 24th. There was also another Sprint employee who claimed that the Within (Sprint's SGS2) would not come out until Q4 at the earliest.
Combine this with the fact that we have heard/seen nothing official from Sprint or Samsung regarding a release, even confirming plans for the phone, the July 24th date is highly suspect. The only other info leading to belief that the SGS2 will come out on Sprint as the Within is the ad for a 3rd party case, where it is mentioned.
We don't even know when the Photon will release, and that has been announced officially with specs, etc.
I wouldn't try to time my purchase/30 day plans on such flimsy information. They might be true, but there's a good chance you will be looking at July 24th without a significant move available, as far as superphones go on Sprint. We'll see.

They were not lax with me at all. I have the NS4G all the known issues, and they admitted to me that some phones were having these issues. However, they would not extend the 30 day trial. Some people have stated that they were able to get an extension, but I was not.

My guess is that we'll see the Within around September. I can wait for that. The 3d isn't much of an upgrade IMO.

Yes. From all indications it is.

Don't count on any liberties with the 30-day return policy. If you just can't stand to go another month with the phone you have now, then wait as long as you can (a couple of weeks perhaps?) before dropping for the 3VO, that'll also give you a little time to get some user feedback from the folks who are getting theirs up front.

I'm going this route. If after a few weeks most of the 3VO owners are praising the device, I may cave and get one. Definitely not a launch day purchase though.

I'm not trying to start a fight, actually kind of curious. Maybe there is something about the SGS2 I dont' know, but how is it more of an upgrade than the Evo 3D is to the Evo 4g?
Evo 3d has dual core processor vs single core of original
Evo 3d has double ram of original
Evo 3d has qhd s-lcd vs wvga of Evo 4G, Galaxy S, Galaxy S2
Like I said not trying to start a fight, just honestly want to know what am I missing about the Galaxy S2 that is more of an upgrade vs it's predecessor than the Evo 3D is to it's predecessor?

I don't know what the big deal about the galaxy s2 is either. I hope it has a better radio in it than the NS4G.

I'm not trying to start a fight, just want the fact that I am obviously missing. I know the Galaxy S2 has the higher internal storage, and may ship with exynos processor or tegra 2(which would be a shame if it's Tegra), but how is the Evo not an upgrade from it's predecessor when it bumps up every stat?

I know you aren't trying to start a fight just messing around. In my opinion you are not missing anything. I don't get it either.

how about wait a few days, let the reviews come in. decide, then get it. then if the G2 comes out on the 24th, you will be within the 30 days lol.
easy peasy

i see the evo 3D as on par with the sgs2. the gs2 might have diff processor and screen technology, but imo the evo 3d is an upgrade from practically any phone currently out. i have the thunderbolt at the moment and the specs of the 3d made me drool. really hoping that it doesn't turn out like the g2x cuz i really didn't notice better performance compared to the thunderbolt, plus i only got 2g.

I'm not nuts about Tegra 2. It's still not as powerful as I was hoping it'd be. That's why I think it'll be a shame if Samsung can't produce enough of their processors and have to switch to Tegra 2 for the SGS2 US phones.

I bet they will intentionally release it outside of 30 days after the 3D, this way they don't have a bunch of spec-crazy people jumping ship just because it's the "next big thing". I would bet it won't hit until 2 months after the 3D.
Sprint doesn't want you returning one for another, they want the 3D to be their flagship phone for a while.

Release shortages

Anyone else think its going to be almost impossible to get one? Look at the evo... its STILL out of freakin in and out of stock online...
With the earthquake in Japan slowing the manufacturing industry down, I would imagine there will be shortages of a lot of products, beyond what there normally would be.
I don't see why japan disaster would slow the chinese sweatshops
yes there well be lots of shortages due to demand for a few months, even now the evo 4g still runs out of stock and the E3D well certainly be more popular
The only reason they keep running low on stock is because they haven't ramped up production. If Sprint wanted to, they could flood the market with EVO 4Gs.
I'm going to bust my ass to get on the list.

NEW FLASH!!!
There are to few Premier members that will qualify for the upgrade now that it won't make any difference.....
Ok, maybe it's not a news flash, but my gut is telling me demand for the EVO 3D won't be as high as it was for the EVO. There's just to many choices now on other carriers and like I said, Sprint's annual upgrade basically doesn't exist for more now...
BTW, I have a feeling that the Japan issue is really a non issue; mostly because the phone won't be released till the summer. Also, Toyota and other car manufactures have already gotten their plants running, so there has to also be a way to ship them out. If you get a auto factory running and can ship a ship full of cars out, I think they should be able build phone parts and ship a billion phone parts out...
I went to verizon the other day with a friend of mine and he was checking out the Thunderbolt. He àsked how their stock has been and they guy said they have sold a ton of them but HTC has been shipping them as soon as they run out. so they haven't had any problem keeping them in stock. Im not sure but im thinking that could be a sign for us that they will keep a decent stock this time and not miss out on sales like with the Evo.

There are still going to be a lot of people using full upgrades/other lines on family plans as well as new customers. Not to mention the people who are still eligible for premier upgrades, and, of course, those who will buy the 3D outright. I fully expect demand to be as high or higher than the OG Evo.
My store is still selling out of stock on the 4G whenever we get them, so the demand is there. You also have to factor in a year of people talking about the EVO which spreads it appeal to the more average customers, as opposed to the 4G launch which was driven by tech-types who knew it was coming.

I'd say the reason you're still selling out of EVO's are because, on Sprint, there's nothing that compares to it in over all features. Sprint is very limited in what top tier phones they carry, and they just don't seem to want to stock them. Believe me, it's not a manufacturing issue. If it were, it'd be almost impossible to get an iPhone.
Here's another possible problem for block buster sales of the EVO 3D. Unlike last year, where Sprint was the only one offering 4G and the was really no comparable phones to the EVO 4G, it's a different story now. Verizon's spring roadmap has been leaked and they are announcing more 4G dual core phones in May.
If people see comparable phones sooner on another carrier and it's available sooner, why wouldn't many people just switch? Especially since LTE is the new buzz word and we've all come to see that LTE coverage is very good (I'm talking about actually having coverage where coverage is supposed to be), with great building penetration? In addition to that, Verizon is saying they'll have 4G (LTE) available in 147 markets by the end of this year, where Sprint/Clearwire looks frozen. Sprint won't even give a hint on what's to be expected by end of year. Because of this, Sprint's price advantage is gone... No one wants to stay on yesterdays network, that's clogged, when you get get new for just a bit more a month.

The phone looks awesome and im glad to see sprint pushing out LTE phones. When im at home im on wifi anyway lol. Well during David Owens interview with Engadget just now he kinda made point to say something that was troubling....
During the interview they were discussing LTE and devices and he made point to say "...well we haven't announced LTE pricing yet....." and then later "...LTE pricing TBD..."
So. Dunno if im reading too much into that as I can't see them charging more for LTE device than they did for WiMax devices as that would just be ludicris and you'd see an outrage they are not in the position to deal with. Hoping He was specifically meaning the Hotspot device plans and such like that and NOT phones.
btw hes the VP of Product Development at Sprint
Edit:
I'm likely reading too much into what he said and he likely was referring to Hotspot devices as they had just talked about or were about to talk about the new hotspot device I have mentioned in post 1.
Funny thing was during the interview most of the comments on engadgets live twitter chat were all about "ASK him about WINDOWS PHONE!!" lol

He was talking about "game changers" and failed to mention the EVO 4G. What a shame. That's one of the biggest game changers there ever was.
I've fell off following Sprint's LTE dance but I'm assuming the Lightsquared deal is green-lighted, pending official word?
Houston & this CES line-up makes me wonder.
Or will they scratch the 900Mhz 3G plans & use it for their LTE 4G as plan B?
it's really disappointing to me that the whole nexus line is samsung. cheap garbage.
of course, i will suck into techoholism that i have and buy the galaxy nexus to give it a shot. 3rd time's the charm? i hope so.

I am aware of that but sometimes surprising the people with an unexpected announcement is a good thing!
Even announcing the Galaxy Nexus without any targeted release date or internal specs is like a half ass announcement. Are they actually going to wait for for LTE to roll out before they release this phone? At that point the phone will become even more irrelevant then it already is now as I am sure the big hitters will be coming at that time like the next EVO or the SGS3.
When is CTIA anyway?

CTIA is May 8-12th im pretty sure.
They said they were releasing these phones all in the first half of '12 if i recall too along with at least 15 total LTE devices for the year which is solid imho. I dont think they are concerned with the "big hitters" coming at that time too b/c the people that want to buy the Nexus will simply buy the Nexus no matter what usually.
Big announcement last night btw b/w Motorola and Intel working together. Finally gets Intel in a big name device manufacturer partnership. Not good for Qualcomm imho, but least this will likely infuse some more competition and make Qualcomm and others step up their game faster.
The intel stuff has me peaking interest right now. the guys are going for 14nm NEXT!!
The first one powered by Intel chips(Atom) will be Lenovo and its the K800. Some solid specs there for a phone.
4.5-inch 720p screen, 6 hours of HD video playback, 45 hours of audio, 8 hours of talk over a 3g network and 14 days on standby, McAfee security, 3D gaming, 1080p video playback, 1080p video capture, *MP camera with 15fps Capability. They showed it taking 10 freaking pics in a single second!!

[Q] Sprint Galaxy Nexus / At&t One X / Sprint EVO 4G LTE or wait for S III

Ok so my EVO 3D shattered today. So I need to get a new phone. I don't want a replacement I'm tired of the 3VO. So here's my dilemma (I'm currently on Sprint, obviously):
• My contract is up so I can choose to renew or start a new contract elsewhere.
• I like the Sprint Galaxy Nexus, I can get that for $200 but there is no LTE in Orlando (Or anywhere for that matter)
• I think the At&t One X is beautiful (love the white). I can get this for $150 (Radioshack) and the there's LTE in Orlando.
• I think the HTC EVO LTE is hideous (color and material combination). I can get this for $200, but again no LTE.
• I've been following the Galaxy S III rumors since I can remember and I like what I see from the leaks. But the truth is we won't get this phone, in the US, until at least 3 months from the Thursday announcement.
So do you guys think I should get one of the current phones available, if so, which one? Or should I be patient and wait till Thursday and see what the S III announcement is all about in terms of availability?
*One thing to keep in mind is that I already have an At&t contract with two lines on it. Maybe I can add a 3rd and get a nice family plan price?
bump please Really undecided
Oh I know how you feel.
With the exception of not having a busted Evo 3d and liking the Evo LTE's design I am in the exact position as you. My Contract is up at the end of May and originally was thinking about the Evo 4G LTE. But am not liking HTC's recent history on Update wait times and the even more baffling root stance makes me think the Nexus is the way to go. But I do not like it's camera at all and am really sensitive to the pentile display on it. The S3 has the same pentile display and I am not sure how the physical home button on the S3 is going to work?
I really do not know what to do. Thankfully now that the Virgin/Virtuous rom leak has breathed new life into the 3D I can now get the better of my new device lust as half of that was based on lack of solid ICS build for the 3D.
Maybe I will enjoy the 3D for sometime now.
HTC Evo 4g LTE vs. Samsung Galaxy S3
Well, I am in the same predicament as you. I currently have the Evo 4g, and my contract expired May 1st. I have been so close to pre-ordering the new Evo 4g LTE, but stop myself every time because I am torn against the upcoming S3!
Now first of all, let me just state that Sprint's voice and 3g network in Chicago leaves MUCH to be desired! I have definitely contemplated switching to Verizon, but I enjoy unlimited data way too much, and I have been hearing great things about Sprint's Network Vision which should be launching in my area within the next month or so. So, I think I'll stick around for another 2 years... That was another hard decision that I won't get in to.
I love my original Evo and everything about it. I have even kept the original Sense ROM because I love that too. That being said, I was excited to learn of the May 18th release for the new Evo 4g LTE. I love the metal casing on the new LTE Evo, the dual-core Snapdragon CPU, the kickstand, the camera abilities, the HD Voice, and the ability to have access to the new LTE network.
I am also hearing that the new Samsung Galaxy S3 is going to be a game changer. It boasts a quad-core CPU (although I've heard that the Evo's dual-core is just as good, if not better), the new Siri-like voice command abilities, along with a bunch of new exciting features which are mainly software based.
Another deciding factor is when this device will ever be released on Sprint. Being a tech junkie, I am very anxious to get my hands on a new device (since I'm already contract-free). Being that there is no defined release date on this device concerns me. I look st how long the HTC ONE has been out in the market, and Sprint is just getting its flavor now. What if the new S3 is released to Verizon or AT&T months before Sprint... I want it now!
So I'm concerned of a few things... If I order the new Evo and get it before the end of the month, (and LTE is not available yet) am I screwing myself by burning the Clearwire bridge? I don't think I could handle using my 49kbs 3g connection. Will I be kicking myself if the S3 is released for Sprint in a month? Should I be concerned about HTC's slow bug and patch releases? Is the S3 even worth the wait? Will I miss having a wall charger for backup batteries that I carry with me every day (will I even need them anymore)? I am so confused, and don't want to have any regrets!
Does anyone have any input to help sway my decision?
Thanks in advance!

Is it worth upgrading?

Hey everyone!
I currently have the EVO 3D, but I'm thinking of upgrading to the EVO 4G LTE. I still have a year left on my contract, but do you guys think it's worth the upgrade?

If you get Wimax and use it, I say keep your 3D for one more year. Other wise the EVO LTE is a much better phone 100 times over. But I'm sure a year from now sprint will release a phone that is 100 times better then the EVO LTE.
^^^^^Agreed.
UNLESS you're in a first round LTE location! Then I'd jump on this bandwagon right now because LTE is gonna blow WiMax out of the water, AND you'd have the 100 times better phone, as the above user said.

Yes. Evo LTE is a game changer.
Hi Everyone! I was just wondering the same thing, I got my upgrade approval this morning and I'm counting the minutes before I can get off work to go get my Evo 4G LTE!!

I thought the same thing about the OG Evo, but then they released the 3d, and it was only 1.2 times better then the evo. I bet we don't see another upgrade-worthy Evo for 2 years.
Everyone mentioned about Wimax and LTE, but besides that, I think you should consider...how much work have you done to customize your 3D? Can you upgrade for affordable cost, without trading in 3D? Are you comfortable getting back on your 3D if you don't like your new Evo? Will you be able to get 30 day return policy, etc?
The camera is very nice on the new Evo. I never had (and don't expect) wimax or LTE in my area anyways. The 3G is greatly faster and the battery life is much much better than my OG (which is different I suppose than your 3D but anyways...)
However the Sprint service for phone/sms here is awful. In fact, we cannot make calls with our new phones while our old ones had the best service in town. We may return them.
In short, your wireless experience may be greatly different and if you rely on your phone for anything be prepared that you may have to switch back if you are dissatisfied with the upghrade.
I have owned the HTC Vogue, HTC Titan (WinMo), EVO 4g, EVO 3d, and the 3d is a huge upgrade over the EVO 4g -- The EVO 3d is obviously better than all of the aforementioned devices. The screen, GPU, and CPU, are much better. The camera and battery life is also better. All around, it's a better device, and a worthy upgrade over the OG EVO. I'm on the fence about upgrading to the LTE, and don't think the SGSIII will be any better than the EVO LTE. Honestly I'm just upgrading for the new GPU, and the LCD2 screen. I've been waiting for a screen like this, and I'm glad HTC decided to bundle this device with a great screen. I was going to wait for the SGS3, but I absolutely hate pentile screens, and I've heard that the quality of the SGS3 screen is inferior to the LTE.
I have another line that can be upgraded in December, so I might pull the trigger on the LTE, and see what Sprint has in store for next year. Anyway, I don't think you can go wrong with the LTE. It's definitely an upgrade over both phones, and could be the best phone in the US at this time.
Ha, by the way, the EVDO Rev. A speeds on my HTC Vogue were amazing. The building I worked at years ago was right next to a tower, and I used to pull 2300-2900bps all day. Now I'm lucky if I receive 500kbps, even when using PRL 00000. Now in 2012 everyone has a smartphone and 3g is oversaturated
Having owned each iteration of Evo, I would have to say it feels like the jump from the 3D to LTEvo is bigger than the 4G to 3D. I never overclocked the first two, so perhaps the 25% higher stock clocks make this phone feel that much snappier.
The screen is also a huge step forward. I haven't taken any pictures yet, but one of the biggest draws to the HTC One family of phones is the camera.
My biggest gripe about this phone is the capacitive buttons. I miss having dedicated search and menu buttons. That's not really a big concern, though.
I think getting the EVO LTE was worth upgrading to from the 3d as my 3d anyways had problems lol.

I still think the 3D was enough of an upgrade over the 4G. HTC went from a single-core 1.0GHz processor to a dual-core 1.2GHz processor. It took a while for Android to really take advantage of the extra processing power, but it eventually happened. When I finally got my hands on my 3D, I noticed a huge difference going from a Gingerbread ROM on a 4G to Gingerbread on a 3D. I feel the same way about ICS on a 3D compared to ICS on a LTEvo.
It's too early to tell what other gains may or may not be made with the LTEvo, but I believe it's definitely an upgrade worth getting. If you know someone with one, see if you can toy around with their phone for a minute or two just so you can feel the difference firsthand and decide for yourself. I was on the fence for a few weeks, but my 3D waded in Crown and Coke last week and I got tired of the screen flickering and two bright spots toward the bottom of the screen. I was eligible for an upgrade anyway so I shelled out for the LTEvo.

Eligible for Upgrade Soon, Where to go next?

Hi All,
I am eligible for my upgrade is 10 days, ready to retire the 3d, and am trying to figure out what phone to get next. Sprint doesn't seem to have many new phones coming out. I have always had HTC phones, ever since windows mobile, and i love sense. I had the galaxy S II for like 3 hours but traded it in for the 3d cause I hated the samsung interface and the size was too big for one handed operation. As far as I can tell the only worthy upgrades now are the EVO 4G LTE and the Galaxy III, both of which are huge. No Iphone 5, not going to happen, dont suggest it. Anyways love to hear your thoughts and opinions. Thanks
Galaxy nexus will be a good choice !
I have an idea:
Get an iPhone 5, everyone will want one, then trade it for any phone you want, they'll do it.

I read over threads of devices I was interested in looked for common issues people were having with phones, trolls and mods. HTC do you have s off or dev unlock can u deal with dev unlock of do you wait for s off. Samsung unlock you phone without restrictions. Performance things you need your phone for games etc. Me personally I chose the gs3 after I swore to never own another Samsung after the instinct.
Get a nexus device. Development is crazy good.
Glad I dumped the 3d.

From what I hear, both are nice. Go to their respective sections here and see which community you like better. Also try them in store first.

Honestly, if you don't want a far larger phone, there isn't much out there. The Evo 4G LTE, Galaxy Nexus, and Galaxy SIII are all about the same size. The Galaxy Nexus is a better phone than the 3D, but not by much. The Development is far, far better though.
If you don't get your upgrade immediately, you might be able to wait around for another 4.3" phone that has better specs, or you could skip this generation.
Wait until early next year for krait architecture quad core phones
That will be a real improvement, else go with one S

Since the Mogul I have owned HTC phones. I have upgraded every year and my first android phone was the First EVO. I got the EVO 3D on launch because it was a good upgrade over the EVO and I wanted to try the 3D. But this is the first year I havent gone out and replaced my phone on launch. I looked at the specs and did my research of the EVO 4G LTE but spending the 200+ bucks didnt seem ideal for me.
Yes the LTE is a step up from the 3D but I have found that im happy with the 3D as its still very fast and with the ICS update its even better than before. I have decided to skip this generation of phones and wait till the next gen HTC phones come out. Also as gimmicky as the 3D feature is for most, I actually use it quite a bit as I have a 3D TV at home.
What it comes down to in my opinion is this..... Use your upgrade now and get a great phone or wait 6-8 months for the next gen phones to start hitting the market and get an even better phone. This is what im doing myself but again its all about weighing your options.
I would suggest you to wait for a month or two ang get a new Nexus and as far rumor goes this year it will be at least 3 of them.
But if you really like Sense skin then i guess either go with HTC One X or Evo 4G LTE.
Thanks all, did you say new nexus?

I would go with the HTC EVO 4G LTE if staying with sprint, personally when my contract is up I'm jumping ship to T-Mobile's new unlimited plan and getting the Samsung Galaxy S III unless there's a better option by then.

If the OP went to T-mo, I would suggest the One S. It's a very fast phone that's thin and much smaller than the One X and galaxy SIII
I'm in the same boat as you. Today I changed my mind after reading a few articles about the snapdragon S4 quad-core phones.....and it looks like the wait wont be too long. One of the articles was a new phone by LG ...the Optimus G. I've never had an LG phone, but omg the specs on this are so impressive......the screen alone is almost a reason to wait.
I've only bought HTC phones for the family (evo(s) and 3d) I really wanted an evo lte, but if I bought today my 2 years would start on a phone that's already been out 2-3 months. Buy today or wait you cant lose
note 2:good:
Note 2-- I agree
I'm looking forward to the next iteration of the note, but if I was going to get a new phone today, I think I would get a galaxy nexus iii.
Happy shopping.
He said the Evo LTE and SGIII are too big, so why in the hell would he want the Note 2? You people need to learn how to read.

Well, in the defense of us people, he said they are huge, but they were the only worthy contenders. This implies he had not ruled them out. Otherwise he would have said not to bother suggesting or discussing them.
At this time, they really are the only two phones for Android power users that Sprint has (besides the 3d of course). My suggestion to check out the dev scene of each device still holds.
