Figure I'd post this here and keep it somewhat updated so we dont have multiple threads all over the place in general for each device and news event.

Edit:
I will continue to update this post during CES with info related to Sprint and such...
Good to see 4 inch screen phones are still relevant. I personally think it's the perfect size.
Will keep a close eye on Sprint's summit.
I love it when CES goes on. I don't like waiting all year long for stuff to finally come out. And, I noticed that Sprint doesn't look to be providing a Keynote this year... Maybe HTC?
That LG Viper looks like a mixup of an EVO and a Galaxy

yeah will be interesting to see what David Owens of Sprint has to show/say tomorrow at 2PM ET during his speach. thats the only official thing from sprint i see though.
Another tid bit that will be nice is Qualcomm's speech just before Sprints....
doubt much from HTC here or much more from sprint since they typically do stuff at CTIA if i recall correctly.
The phone looks awesome and im glad to see sprint pushing out LTE phones. When im at home im on wifi anyway lol. Ive had an eligible upgrade since the iphones 4s and galaxy S2 and both times i just decided they werent good enough to get rid of my evo. Sad thing is my evo 3d is not even rooted lol. Maybe this phone will be the phone that dose it. I love my galaxy 10.1 tab so theres a good chance

meh.........
Well during David Owens interview with Engadget just now he kinda made point to say something that was troubling....
During the interview they were discussing LTE and devices and he made point to say "...well we haven't announced LTE pricing yet....." and then later "...LTE pricing TBD..."
So. Dunno if im reading too much into that as I can't see them charging more for LTE device than they did for WiMax devices as that would just be ludicris and you'd see an outrage they are not in the position to deal with. Hoping He was specifically meaning the Hotspot device plans and such like that and NOT phones.
btw hes the VP of Product Development at Sprint
Edit:
I'm likely reading too much into what he said and he likely was referring to Hotspot devices as they had just talked about or were about to talk about the new hotspot device I have mentioned in post 1.
Funny thing was during the interview most of the comments on engadgets live twitter chat were all about "ASK him about WINDOWS PHONE!!" lol
I could care less about that lol.

He was talking about "game changers" and failed to mention the EVO 4G. What a shame. That's one of the biggest game changers there ever was.
I've fell off following Sprint's LTE dance but I'm assuming the Lightsquared deal is green-lighted, pending official word?
Houston & this CES line-up makes me wonder.
Or will they scratch the 900Mhz 3G plans & use it for their LTE 4G as plan B?
it's really disappointing to me that the whole nexus line is samsung. cheap garbage.
of course, i will suck into techoholism that i have and buy the galaxy nexus to give it a shot. 3rd time's the charm? i hope so.

I am aware of that but sometimes surprising the people with an unexpected announcement is a good thing!
Even announcing the Galaxy Nexus without any targeted release date or internal specs is like a half ass announcement. Are they actually going to wait for for LTE to roll out before they release this phone? At that point the phone will become even more irrelevant then it already is now as I am sure the big hitters will be coming at that time like the next EVO or the SGS3.
When is CTIA anyway?

CTIA is May 8-12th im pretty sure.
They said they were releasing these phones all in the first half of '12 if i recall too along with at least 15 total LTE devices for the year which is solid imho. I dont think they are concerned with the "big hitters" coming at that time too b/c the people that want to buy the Nexus will simply buy the Nexus no matter what usually.
Big announcement last night btw b/w Motorola and Intel working together. Finally gets Intel in a big name device manufacturer partnership. Not good for Qualcomm imho, but least this will likely infuse some more competition and make Qualcomm and others step up their game faster.
The intel stuff has me peaking interest right now. the guys are going for 14nm NEXT!!
The first one powered by Intel chips(Atom) will be Lenovo and its the K800. Some solid specs there for a phone.
4.5-inch 720p screen, 6 hours of HD video playback, 45 hours of audio, 8 hours of talk over a 3g network and 14 days on standby, McAfee security, 3D gaming, 1080p video playback, 1080p video capture, *MP camera with 15fps Capability. They showed it taking 10 freaking pics in a single second!!

I think the tone for the Thunderbolt launch was set with HTC's ridiculously pretentious slogan "this isn't your dream phone, it's the one after that." The expectations were set high. And them came the official announcement, with no release date and lackluster specs. But then again, the dual-core phones that were announced probably wouldn't be out for awhile, so excitement for the TB remained high.
Next, the Verizon iPhone is announced and then released shortly after. Pricing information puts the Thunderbolt at $250, making it one of the most expensive phones out there. This was surprising considering the specs, despite the 32GB SD card included. Release date rumors run rampant, with rumored dates coming and going. Best Buy starts taking money for pre-orders without a date or data plan pricing announced.
Some videos of the TB get posted on YouTube, including benchmarks. Disappointingly, the Thunderbolt can't even match up to the 9 month old Galaxy S in the gaming benchmarks.
Then, the final nail in the coffin for me: the release of the Atrix. Now, I personally have no interest in buying a Motorola phone, but it beats the pants off of the Thunderbolt in all of the benchmarks, is dual-core, has more RAM (1GB vs 768MB in the TB), has a significantly higher resolution screen (despite being smaller), and is about 20% thinner/10% lighter while having a 40% higher battery capacity. It also has Gorilla Glass, which the TB may well have but we wouldn't know. And, to add insult to injury it is $50 cheaper than the unreleased Thunderbolt.
After typing all of that out, HTC's slogan seems even more ridiculous to me (which I didn't think was possible). Now, this all may seem overly harsh, but this is a phone that you're going to be stuck with for 2 years with no options for early upgrade (thanks Verizon!). As time goes on without a release date, new phones are being announced and released and the Thunderbolt is losing its luster. I can't imagine them screwing this launch up any more than they have.
Anyways, I just wanted to vent my (and my wife's) frustrations and see what everyone thought...

The OP is also forgetting that the Atrix is on another network.
So while it may be cheaper up front, you would end up paying far more per month for less data. Also, the Atrix is not LTE but HSPA+ so as ATT starts moving over to LTE, the ATRIX wont take advantage of it.
I agree but thunderbolt is still a good phone. Oh by the way Atrix is lte capable just reaserch it. I might be going with the atrix even though I hate Motorola. I might return.my inspire 4g since the bumped up the attic release date.

I thought that was debunked since the FCC papers do not show a LTE radio in there. The rumor is of a possibly refreshed Atrix down the line with an LTE chip, but I thought the current one is categorically not LTE able.

No I swear I read from a very credible website and even could have been one of the videos where they said. Atrix 4G will be only phone that will be able to do LTE down the line when ATT upgrades their network. It was a few months back, I am sure if you google it a little, you might be able to dig it up.

No I'm not forgetting that at all. If I could live with 2GB/mo AT&T would be substantially cheaper than Verizon for me, but I won't go to AT&T as a matter of principal. But I don't think the argument holds up either way, because $200 has always been the ceiling for new phones on both networks (aside from the ridiculous Droid R2-D2).
My post is really about the phones anyway--my main gripe is that HTC/Verizon are pitching (and charging for) the TB as if it's some cutting-edge device, when it's nothing more than an incremental improvement over what was already out there and has significantly inferior hardware to a phone that will be shipping before it.
And as for LTE, lots of places will be waiting 2+ years for it to come to their area.
To the OP, what was u expecting some quad core phone that can run crysis on max. Sang so what if its not the fastest dam phone stay with ur Samsung. You act like this is some type of game system lol. While the Atrix 4G's speed was also reflected on our benchmark tests, it didn't blow other smartphones out of the water. The handset achieved an An3DBench score of 6,305, more than 1,000 points above the current average, but just 25 points faster that the Inspire 4G. Also, both the Nexus S (6,853) and Droid Pro (7,352) handily beat the Atrix 4G on this test.
Though the Atrix 4G notched a fast Linpack score of 32.7, beating the Evo Shift 4G (29.7) and T-Mobile G2 (28.7), the Inspire 4G logged a higher 37.58. The Atrix 4G's most impressive score was on the Benchmark CPU test, where it notched a record 2,369, almost 1,500 points above average, and almost 200 points higher than the myTouch 4G (2,190)./

I probably won't buy it; but as you said it's certainly within my right to post my thoughts and I was just curious how other people felt about the whole thing. I prefer HTC's skin (if I couldn't have vanilla) and build quality over the other manufacturers, however my MyTouch 3G is an absolute piece of junk and has been since the day I got it.
And no, I'm not expecting a quad core phone in 2011, that's a false dichotomy. There are shades of gray, and I don't think expecting the TB to beat a 9 month-old phone in gaming is too much to ask. Considering I'd be stuck with the phone for 2 years, I don't want to worry about whether I'm going to be able to use new apps/play new games a year and a half from now.
There will be a phone like the Atrix on Verizon released in Nov. From a very reliable source.

Being me, money is an issue. $250 is obscene, but by pre-ordering with bestbuy, I received a $50 giftcard too. So it is actually $200. But I will be paying the tax of $250 and not $200. So $200 is the cost of current upper tier, so eh.
Actually guys the skype thing isnt a big suprise since the icon installed on the phone says "SKYPE DEMO" !!!
Even when youve seen videos online it was always a DEMO VIDEO of skype in action.
i am on att with the iphone 4 and was thinking about the atrix but when i seen the bionic and decided to wait i wish there was a release date for the bionic
I still dont see how its not cutting edge. Its one of the top phones that will be on the market. It has already been benched against 2 other "future release" phones (bionic & the samsung) and it beat them both in testing and the bionic is a dual core.
Yes its true there will be bigger and badder bad boys out there eventually but that is true for all electronics pretty much. Even when these newer phones come out this phone will still run neck and neck with them in terms of features and such. I can understand speed and memory for PC and laptops but this is a phone, how powerful do you need it. Yes I like the specs and all but I still dont think all the power it has will be fully tapped into by me.
Well said , my feelings exactly ! It is a phone , not a laptop or ipod.
It had a quadrant score of 1950, how fast does it need to be.

well, considering that its almost Q3 already, with no word from sprint or any of the rumor sites, august/september doesnt seem too far fetched. with the amount of expectations that the sgsii has in the u.s., im sure we'll be notified when specs are in, when it passes fcc, etc. so until then, i'm not gonna expect it within the next couple of months.

there is no official release date, and nothing too substantial either.
don't even pay attention to rumors. especially with sprint. the nexus s 4g was rumored to drop early april; it dropped early may, the evo 3d was rumored to drop early june; its now dropping late june...

More often its the carriers we have here (ATT, Verizon, Sprint, TMO), not the suppliers (HTC, Samsung, Motorola). Our guys have some pretty ridiculous testing standards, that usually takes a while to pass. Also, other than ATT, every one of our carriers use a technology spectrum that hardly anyone else in the world uses, so requires even more time. Add on to that how our guys sometimes request physical modifications to differentiate from one another, and you end up with a situation where we get the hot international phone significantly later than everyone else.
Looks like sprint will be releasing the gs2 in about 2-3 weeks. About time! Can't wait.

First off, I love my E3D! Is it just me or is anyone else concerned that Sprint is not marketing this phone very good at all. I've seen the lame ping pong commercial and a NASCAR commercial for a contest. Is this truly the flagship phone for Sprint? I am still seeing EVO 4G commercials! Why are they not pumping this thing up? C'mon Sprint...convince me I have the best device on the Now Network! I know I do, but I want to hear it from you!!
Its because they are prepping for the Motorola and Samsung phones coming out. I think they are having commitment issues with the EVO. I love it tho

Marketing
No on all of the above. There is no flagship phone coming out on any network including the Iphone 5 (what happened to the A5) anytime soon. The battle is not on selling the hardware, It's marketing price plans specifically data. Verizon just capped their plans, ATT did it as well, they are buying T-mobile or trying too. Sprint's stock won't get a boost from the EVO 3d, nor Motorola, Nor Samsung, maybe a little from Apple. But that is it. Not that Sprint is saying the phone sucks, but dual cores will be everywhere soon. (Buy Qualcomm) This is not a flagship like the EVO 4G or the Iphone was for Apple. Without a quad core 4 ghz 128 gb sd card qhd 2156x1080 auto stereoscopic (which the 4g was in its debut as far as innovation) no carrier has anything groundbreaking. They are selling plans, which is their competitive edge. And unless you own stock, and I do, what do you care about the commercials?

I suppose you are right, it's more about plans now. As far as stock..I don't own shares but I believe my years of service with Sprint does give me a little room here to voice my concerns. And when I saw more commercials today for the OG 4G it just kinda bothered me, but you're right and I didn't think about that...it's about the plan more than the phone.

Thanks Randy, no worries! You are absolutely correct though...very tricky, especially for this phone! They'll figure something out as I believe this is the Flagship phone...they threw a big party for its release like they did for the EVO 4G. From a shareholders perspective how do you think the whole t-mobile att deal will affect Sprint?
ATT T-Mobile Acquisition
As far as that is concerned, that is a slippery slope. Short-term Sprint could benefit from defectors refusing to sign with ATT. 99% done deal that Sprint will be getting Iphone 5. That is another enticement for T-Mobile customers to be swayed to Sprint. Long term who knows... Sprint could end up being bought by someone. Verizon is the popular name because of the shared CDMA platform. I personally don't think that matters. There were rumors a year ago that Google would might dive in, they certainly have the cash but that isn't their arena. They use other companies hardware and airwaves to grow product. Google voice, any and all isp's... etc. All I know is Dan Hesse (sprint CEO) Is launching a war to prevent it. And he's driven the stock price up 25% this past ytd. Stock hit $6 earlier this summer. He's doing something right.
BTW Sprint is launching a $3 million EVO3D Sprint Nascar giveaway ad campaign.
Carl Edwards was on SportsCenter talking about it.
Also the adds will continue to roll out, My guess is Sprint wanted the phone to circulate for a month or so to work out the bugs... get out the firmware updates before going with the "full court press". They don't need a ****load of new customers with EVO3D problems that don't know how to figure out fixes while the phone is in its infancy. Have a great day
A lot depends on the advertising medium as to which phone they'll promote. The 3D, despite its good hardware, is a nitch phone. Not many business users will be tempted. Cutting edge users will be.
On the other hand, I bet you'll see lot of promotion in business media for the Photon. With an equal emphasis on their "truly unlimited".

I know this comment will get a lot of hate, but the iPhone is probably the best smartphone for the average user.

Because people that don't want to understand how a phone works like simplicity and controlled environments. It's kinda like this....have you ever read the book fahrenheit 451? People enjoy being herded as long as they are getting what they believe they want and don't have to work to get it.
If you haven't read the book I highly suggest you do.

Exactly. People like us aren't your everyday user. The average consumer sees what their friend, neighbors, cousin has and likes it and gets it. It's simple and to the point. People like ease of use, and lets be honest, it's easy to use and dumbed down for the average consumer, like Chris just said. Not to mention every frackin' store you go to has accessories for it.

because Verizon really brought the "game changer" to apple. In all honesty it barely made a dent into its customer base. It moved a few more phones for Verizon/Apple. I honestly doubt that it will be the most amazing thing sprint will have gained, as much as apple hopes it to be. Not to mention ICS is around the corner, sprint has a dang good IP of android phones available and coming soon. Apple is just hitting that non innovating road block and we will see more and more kangs from android in there software and there bringing massive changes to the phone as we know it has already been done by bits and pieces from every manufacturer including itself. So tomorrows announcement will be just another day in the books filled with apple fanboism, upgraded hardware, a software update full of kang, and nothing more exciting then that.
Its all in retrospec to the user. I'm android. And will be always. Amen. nothing more thrilling to see a beautiful os, android. Not to mention it's source built roms like CM/MIUI. Apple gets?
Hopefully, Sprint gets an exclusive on a Wimax-enabled iPhone 5 starting this month while the other carriers have to wait for an LTE-enabled iPhone 5 in early 2012.
All I have to say is they better start putting some money into the network or I'm leaving for Verizon.

i really doubt there will be a wimax iphone.. Sprint wimax is dead in the water, they are focusing on their LTE comeing early next year.. They made a huge mistake with Clear for wimax and just signed a deal with LightSquared for their wimax.. So i dont see any reason they would still contine to make wimax phones for a network that has totaly stalled.
Android is the marketshare leader for phones. Apple doesnt sell alot, they just sell alot of one model. Android is about choices, You can buy cheap ones or nice ones. Apple makes you buy their newest, so of course they will dell more than any other phone model.

Does the mean iPhone sells a lot cause is only one phone? Mm well let ne tell you they do sell a lot it hasnt been one month the US top smartphone is iPhone 4 and the second one guess what ? IPhone 3GS, I sold my iphone last week and i hope sprint gets it cause I do not want to open another line to try it
Android phones activation are raising up sky high only cause metro pcs and cricket got them now and most phones are 200$ out of contract, so while a iPhone has top sales android sales like 40%-50% top android phones (SGS 2 , EVO 3d , Droid charged ,etc ) that can do what an iphone do (like video chat and play games without lag ) and the rest of it is because they just affordable phones

I don't. I'm one of the few people that use 4G, so the last thing I want is an influx of Sprint iPhone users hogging up my 4G bandwidth. I don't even want an influx of iPhone users hogging up my 3G bandwidth. Remember how ****ty Sprint's network got when the OG Evo started flying off of the shelves?
I agree with zone23: Invest in improving the network.....NOT in bogging it down by adding more users without increasing capacity.
My $0.02.

They're in a position to apply the necessary tweaks to fortify the network. It's just a matter of following through on it.

I think you meant to say your one of the few people who CAN use 4G lol. I would use it too if I could keep a stable connection lol. Sprint really took 2 steps backwards when they invested a ton of $$$ into Clear. Tisk tisk tisk....

I have the unfortunate luck of living between 2 4G coverage areas.... key word is "between". Im out of range for each and Clearwire is never gonna extend coverage to take care of a 20 mile strip between towers..
Did anyone watch this? Saw bits and pieces. Looks like LTE in 2013. And 1x advance but no mention if EV-do rev b. If my facts are wrong feel free to cirrect me. This is just what I read.

wonder what will happen to our phones if we continue to keep it after 2013. they've only said that WiMax will continue to operate through 2012 but not after -.-
Granted i know people would already be getting new phones by then but what about the ones who keep their phones for longer?

No WiMax will continue to operate, but it will no longer be funded, or have devices sold for it.
But, this probably also means if the tower catches fire and kills every thing, that it won't be replaced.
Equivalent of an analog base station dieing today, no sense it forking out the cash the repair it so the guy with the bag phone can connect.

hmm that's interesting. maybe by then everyone will jump on LTE and the WiMax node won't be so congested and we get better speeds! thats a plus for users that will stay with their phones.
i do see myself staying with this phone for a while because of the great quality, kick stand, best reception and ofcourse SIMCARD! but i have to admit that if there will be a good phone coming out with a good keyboard i will get it simcard or not.
coming from a series of keyboard phones (blackberry curve, moto q, palm 800w, touchpro, touchpro2, samsung epic) its hard to get used to touch screen. i feel like i dont even use the phone for texting as much no more because touchscreen keyboard gives me so much typos.
They said they would continue to sell WiMAX products into 2012 so I can't imagine they're going to sell them one month and then drop WiMAX support the next. However, it did look like there won't be any expansion of WiMAX beyond what's there already so I would think if you were buying a phone next year you would want the new LTE versions. Again, referring to purchases in mid 2012, not now. The way they described the new base stations it sounds like they can support WiMAX, LTE and CDMA across multiple frequencies all in one tower (which is what they're trying to get to so they have just one network to support) - but I'm not totally sure they'll have WiMAX in their own towers. It's supposed to save them somewhere around $4 Billion consolidating their network this way.
They also stated that wherever they had 3G they would have 4G. This all sounds really good if they actually execute it.
BGR covered the event with a live blog. Here's the link:

I believe I also heard they will be rolling out Motorola LTE enabled devices in 2012 towards the begining. But who knows.
so if we get 1x at least we get voice and data at same time, now do our photons support this??
I thought I heard someplace that the phones released in the latter part of this year would support it. IE Evo 3D, Photon, Epic Touch. But I"m not sure how true that was.

not really sure how much truth it has as no one has any concrete information if any of the wimax phones support it
From what I heard the Evo 3D won't support the LTE, so I'm guessing the Photon probably won't either. But I think they said it would support the 1X. But again, this is just some of what I was reading on the forums. So take that with a grain of salt. But sometimes the info on here is legit.
voice and data at the same time is a cdma limitation not the device, and the Photon does not support LTE. But it is still a killer phone
Personally, I feel a bit cheated. Sprint picked the wrong technology out of the gate and is now trying to catch up. I still have not gotten the WiMax they said would be here by now. Had an EVO since day one and have never been able to connect to WiMax on either phone.
I pay the same amount as others but don't get the same amount of services. For some reason it almost feels like something about it should be illegal. Just feel a bit taken. Plus, no guarantee that around 2013 when the LTE network is gaining ground something better won't pop up that makes LTE look like dial-up. Then, same thing all over again.
I think we all saw this coming one day. Wimax is not great and penetration is horrible. Moving to LTE is the smartest thing they could do. I don't like that my phone is officially obsolete after 2012 but what can you do. People are still buying phones that I consider obsolete right out the door. ie..Galaxy sII epic touch. I just hope when I am ready to decide on staying with sprint or leaving that there will be a market for selling my phone and I won't lose a bunch of money on it. I am not going to wait till the time nears.

well evdo - 1x advanced overcomes this limitation and that is where Sprint is heading in 2012, the photon does support evdo rev b, but not sure about 1x advanced
