[Q] Help for a Newb? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone, just recieved delivery of my SG2 today, scared that i do not want to brick it or something. Its a Vodaphone Australia I9100T version.
Looking to root it, all seems straight forward except for the kernal to download and flash..., from the CF-Root posts.
My
Kernel version is 2.6.35,7-I9100TDUKF2-CL264900
does that mean I just pick the KF2 one from CF's posts and it should be right?
Am I missing anything, ODIN - flash it and its done?
How do i take a backup of my original kernel?
Cheers

It's pretty hard to brick your phone if you follow instructions. Easier than jailbreaking an iPhone, in most respects. Here, follow this link, I rooted mine last week at work and it took like 15 minutes. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278

Hey,
i too have a galaxy S II from vodafone in australia.
under *#1234# it says pda is I9100TDUKF2, phone is I9100TDUKF2, and the csc is I9100TVAUKF2.
To root my device do i choose the XXKF2 generic or stock kernel from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 ?
Or do i use the frankenstein ones? (Im not even sure on the major difference =X) I only ask because the CSC doesnt quite match up with any, and as this is my first and recently new android phone i dont want to brick it ><

In my opinion you should use CF-Root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Just read post 1,2,3,4 and just follow the instructions and nothing can go wrong. And yes you should pick the KF2 kernel.

Lennyz1988,
Does the difference in CSC matter? aka VAU for mine, compared to the OXA on the KF2 kernel in the link you gave? another nooby question.. should i use the kernel provided in the CF-Root link you gave, or one of the ones from the other guide?
cheers

You should pick the kernel from the thread I provided. In post 4 is the kernel you need. But read the other posts first of course CSC is not relevant at the moment.

Another noob here. I have the Vodafone (UK) version and I've upgraded it as far as I can with Kies. I now have:
Baseband: i9100BUKE1
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100BUKE5-CL227058 [email protected] #2
Build number: GINGERBREAD.BUKE5
I would like to root it and ideally (if I can find a way to back up an restore reliably) flash a non-vodafone-riddled-with-crap ROM on it.
I read the instructions on how to flash the kernel rom to root it with CF_root, however they don't seeem to have the any version for KE5 (or am I wrong?). What are my alternatives for rooting?
Thanks

thanks for the quick reply Lenny1988,
hopefully i dont stuff things up, but i did get the KF2 kernel from the 4th post as you suggested. Does it change much that my phone is the I9100T and not the I9100?
cheers!
UPDATE : so i went ahead and did it, tis currently sitting at a screen that appears to be a battery charging. Hopefully all is well =\
UPDATE 2 : so all went well, got the triangle, followed CF-Root and removed it. now i have a rooted stock galaxy S 2, cheers Lennyz1988 for the direction

Which Firmware?

First - sorry - I know this gets asked all the time, and yes - I have read a large chunk of IntraTech's simply indispensable thread, but... While I am more than happy with the flashing of Roms and Kernels, I can't work out which the best (Firmware/Kernel) one for my phone is
I'm on the i9100, it is an unbranded one from CarPhoneWarehouse (grrrr! ) and they kindly left me with a kernel from the stone age! I have just flashed with I9100XXKL1 from Sam which is touted as an Open Europe 2.3.6, but it turned out to be a branded 2.3.4 - I'd much rather go with one from Intra's site, but it seems like he's still trying to get his stuff back online after the Megaupload disaster.
I will obv. be looking to root the phone, initially just with CF-Root 5.2. Which Kernel is best for me? (Not looking for ICS until the 'official' Samsung one comes out)
CFRoot thread. Use the kernel that corresponds to the "baseband" details in settings/about phone.

i would suggest you root the phone and then flash WANAM"s xwla4 stock and unbranded.
as for the kernel it is a matter of choice and what you need battery or performance.
Siyah kernel is great and RedPill kernel(thi is what i am using)

RedPill kernel :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1288850
I'm on KG4 which is not in the list - i was hoping to flash my phone with the 'best' kernel then use gthe cf-root option but can't work out which one to use

Thanks for those - I do like the look of Red Pill - I was hoping to go with the stock firmware, but if i can't track it down i may well go with Red Pill
Just realised that my Baseband (KG4) and Kernel (KG7) now don't match. How much impact will this have, and don't most of the packages normally do both?
Can anyone tell me what the latest Official unbranded Samsung Firmware is for the UK SGII?

Thanks for the reassurance on the modem/kernel matching.
I understand that it is quite painful to answer the same questions over and over, but as I mentioned in the 1st post, I have had a good root through Intra's thread (Stock Firmware) - if that's the one you mean - and I'm still a little unsure which one is best for me, I assume that...
I need a firmware with either XX or XW (UK)
I need one of the 2.3.6 ones (near the bottom of the exhaustive list)
The Firmware will flash both the Baseband and Firmware (PDA and Phone)
I can use any one that matches the UK and 2.3.6 bits
Given all of that, I can see the following that would work for me:
XWKK2, XWKK5, XWKL1 (Official?), XWLA4 (This one as it has no carrier branding?)
That's 4 that I can see that all seem 'correct' - Please can someone either give me the missing piece of the puzzle and tell me what I'm missing, or just say "the latest official firmware for your phone is..."
Please!
So, I put the LPH tar in PDA section of Odin and flash as normal like I would with GB builds?
I will do a full wipe and a back up, but would anyone suggest returning to stock GB first or just go with the flow?
Thanks
XWLA4
Android 2.3.6
There is no carrier branding
This package has: PDA: XWLA4| Modem/phone: XXKI3| CSC: XEUKH2
Download: http://uploadmirrors.com/download/3V...I9100XEUKH2.7z
UK CSC so should work fine for you .
jje
Perfect - thanks for that - been a real pain trying to work it out - especially as half the links were down
Sorry for highjacking the thread with my question. It was meant for Intra's thread where i shall post it again.
oops lol
No snags
All done - Flashed and Rooted - all looking good - thanks for all the help!

[Q] CF Root for I9100XWLP8 I9100XSALP4

Hello,
Does the following CF Root kernel : CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XSA_LP8-v5.4-CWM5.zip work for the PDA:I9100XWLP8, CSC:I9100XSALP4 firmware?
I'm running the I9100XXLPQ_I9100OXALPQ firmware, rooted with CF Root (which I'm told is rather old) and I'm experiencing SoD and grayed wifi toggle issues when turning it on/off . So I thought I could try the firmware mentioned in the first paragraph. *unbranded from Australia*. Should I? Or should I just wait until a stock 4.0.4 firmware is released?
Thanks for advise
The important part is matching the last three letters / numbers of your kernel and rom (when flashing original / Chainfire kernels), in your case LP8. The closer match the number is the better, if the LETTERS don't match, don't flash, you're asking for trouble.
I wont go into any more detail has its explained pretty well on Chainfires forum, follow the link in my signature.
Thanks for your help, appreciated.
I have the thread in question, I just preferred to be sure and ask a pro. I'm somewhat confused if I should match the PDA or the CSC part of the firmware with the CF-Root file (I'm guessing for what I've seen it's the PDA part that matters).
Thanks again
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
Yes, the file you have is correct as it matches the last five characters of your PDA version (XWLP8) and if you look at the CF-Root file, it has XW_XSA_LP8.
Just flash through the PDA section of Odin.
Chris.

[Q] ROM for I9100 XWKF3

Hi,
I would like to flash new ROMs on my I9100 (XWKF3) but several ROMs have different model number as mine : XWKF3
for example i would like to test :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1659654 but i don't know if i will work or no.
MUST I use only ROM with the same model number as mine (XWKF3) or it doesn't matter and all ROM for I9100 can work ?
thx

most custom roms run on the lastest firmware.
xwkf3 is most prob your region firmware.
you can flash any roms listed for your GT-I9100 thats states it for this model.
all you need is root and cwm and to follow the flashing guide and read faq for the rom you have choosen to flash.
To install custom ROM you have to flash CFROOT with CWM first.
You can find one for you here (choose the one according to your current ROM): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Then go to CWM recovery mode and install ROM. I do not know this ROM so cannot tell you more detailed instructions. Please, read the ROM thread carefully for instructions.
EDIT: Now I noticed that you are running GB, not ICS ROM. I am not sure whether it is needed or not, but I would recommend first to flash newest original Samsung ICS ROM, then newest CFROOT and then to install custom ROM. I am really not sure, whether it is needed, but this works smoothly for me.
I already have ROOT and backup ROM from my I9100... so no problem with this.... moreover i already flashed more than 50 PDA so no problem with this also...
so if i understood well only ROM which have XWKF3 as model number can be flashed on my I9100 ?
1. did i understand it well ?
2. or is it only for original and insecure ROM for ROOT mode only ?
ICS ROM even original are not available AFAIK for model XWKF3
or did i miss something ?
thx.

no, you have got it wrong
XWKF3 is the version of firmware you are currently on, it has no impact on what you can flash...i.e you can flash any i9100 rom on it. Your model is NOT XWKF3, your model is GT-i9100
please ignore the XWKF3 part, its really not relevant
moreover i already flashed more than 50 PDA so no problem with this also...

i dont understand how you have flashed 50 firmwares if you dont know this....i seriously suggest doing some research before doing anything further with your phone

Definitely not. You can flash any ROM, but you should choose one for your region/country. Choose one from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487 or from SamMobile or samsung-updates.
Then take CFROOT dedicated to your ROM from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399.
Then use CWM to flash any custom ROM following the instructions for the ROM.

i think there is a misunderstanding here.
the XWKF3 is in the android OS written as Model Number.
i know that my samsung is a I9100 model however during my flash for ROOT and CWM installation it is also referenced as Model number...
i flashed several HTCs (ROM & FW) before with any issue, my question here was about the model number...is the Android OS model number important in the ROM choice or not.
and you answered to that question
thx
nope, xwkf3 is NEVER the model number, it is the 3rd firmware of june 2011 and therefor terribly old and outdated.
to clarify, xw is your region, general europe, k is the year of the rom (k=11th letter of the alphabet, year 2011), f is the month of the rom (f=6th letter, june) and 3 is a running number for the roms of that month.
also, in android os information, Model Number says GT-I9100, the rom number you refer to can only show up in baseband version and/or build number.
you must flash a rom from this sub forum, not just any model or make of phone, but flashing another kf3 rom would give you the same one, you already have. obviously you would want something newer, like LP7 or LPD or at least LA4.
but given the current state of this device, i would recommend you just connect the phone to the pc, start kies and let it take care of the rom flashing process for you and upgrade you to the latest rom for your region, because at this point i would not recommend you to start flashing on your own, you are still lacking the basics. no offense, but you have a lot of reading to do before you get started on that or you will brick your device!
a good place to start reading is this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
after you read the entire first 4 posts in that thread, you can start flashing roms, preferably one you downloaded in said thread, if you have further questions, just continue reading or ask in that thread or here again.

Official Branded Kernel/ROM

Hello,
I'm attempting to return my I9100 to stock so I can update via KIES as I wish to sell it, after rooting, flashing ICS, playing around for a month etc...
It was originally a T-mobile handset, I used checkfus to find the original stock ROM, and I've downloaded it, however, I cannot get hold of the stock kernel for love nor money! (I've googled it, found one apparent alternative source, but for some reason it wont boot using this and just keeps looping through the T-mobile branded load-up screen)
The kernel I'm after is the following:
UK
BOKE3:http://www.multiupload.com/GY05UJM6DQ
Firmware info: PDA:BOKE3|PHONE:BOKD1|CSC:TMUKE3
BOKE3 Stock Kernel: http://www.multiupload.com/I41CAJ2BLS
Password: [email protected]
From this thread:
[ROMS]Official i9100 carrier branded firmware download for Odin Flash
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928
I've read the thread and checked both Sammobile and Samsung-update and neither has the BOKE3 Kernel.
If anyone has this, please, please could you upload it so I can return my handset to stock, I would really appreciate it.
Also, if I'm doing anything obviously wrong, please point me in the right direction, I am a n00b at this. (I've successfully reset my counter using triangle away, and flashed the ROM from checkfus, but KIES still says NO!)
Many thanks!
Luke
ps. I realise now I should have backed up my stock kernel and ROM before tweaking, stupid stupid stupid...
I stopped reading somewhere when you say you downloaded using checkfuS and now after a stock kernel.........
Buddy ROM package like you get from checkfus is whole thing including kernel.
Just flash the ROM using Odin.
But be sure its for i9100 if you have that.

Why don't you just download and flash latest ICS ROM with UK support?
Do you really need the branded version?
Just have a look at Intratech's other thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
I recommend XWLPD, as this has best balance between performance and battery life on my phone.
If you want to go bak to GB, then flash XWLA4, which was best GB ROM IMO.
Thank you so much atifsh!
I did wonder whether the firmware download from CheckFus included the kernel, but couldn't figure it out (I'm stupid, I know! I'm new at this stuff...)
It's definitely the i9100 (checked under battery), it's definitely a T-mobile UK handset (bought it from a T-mobile customer who provided the contract paperwork).
Last night I tried flashing the latest T-mobile firmware, but KIES didn't like it, so tried flashing the BOKE3 firmware (oldest T-mobile branded firmware) and it didn't like that either.
Someone mentioned that when flashing you need to add the firmware file to the CSC section of odin to reset the CSC code, is this correct? I normally only include it in the PDA section.
This may be the problem I'm having as when I check my CSC using *#272*IMEI# it only lists CPW (carphone warehouse) and not TMU (T-mobile). Does this make sense as to why KIES wouldn't recognise the firmware?
I really appreciate your input and help here. Many thanks!
Luke
Hi It_ler,
Thanks for the advice, I was running the latest ICS firmware from the official thread, however I've decided to sell the device and would like to restore it to stock so that whomever I sell it to can update it through the official methods if they so wish.
Hope that makes sense!
Luke
Remove Sim, remove external sdcard.
Put the firmware.md5 in pda
Put your phone in download mode
after flash and boot dial *2767*3855#
It will wipe your phone and hopefully fix your csc.
Atifsh,
Thank you SO much! You saved my bacon. It worked when I did the *2767*3855# reset, this fixed the CSC and then the phone could update via KIES.
I really appreciate you help,
Many thanks,
Luke

[Q] Galaxy Ace GT-S5830i Flashing a stock firmware question/help!

Hello guys. Yes i'm a noob and i have tried desperately to find the info out myself but i'm getting myself SO confused, i hope someone can help me out a bit and clarify a few things for me.
I have a SAMSUNG GALAXY ACE GT-S5830i which is a United Kingdom model phone unlocked to all networks but it was getting very worn and tatty so i went out this morning and purchased a brand new SAMSUNG GALAXY ACE GT-S5830i phone (identical model) however this one came supplied as locked to the o2 network and is o2 branded on all the startup/shutdown screens.
I figured i could simply re-flash a stock firmware to it to lose all of the o2 branding and return it to the standard Samsung startup/shutdown screens (and possibly unlock the phone to all networks during the process but i'm not that bothered about doing that as it doesn't really matter to me)
On the handsets I have gone into SETTINGS> ABOUT PHONE> and the details are as follows:
Model Number: GT-S5830i
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version: S5830iXXLK1
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #1
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XXLK3
...and these details are the same for both the old phone and the new o2 branded one.
Now then, here's where i'm at: when i do things i'm not only doing them to get to the 'end goal' but also to learn and educate myself along the way, but so much of the information out there assumes that you already know what they are talking about or is just too confusing as it doesn't explain enough. I have gotten myself very confused lol.
I want to be able to 'de-brand' the new phone so that it is just like the old one, and to do that i'd like to understand what i am doing a bit more, like the baseband version and build number (XXLK1 and XXLK3 are bpth quoted in the 'About Phone' menu) and i don't understand what file i should be downloading as all i can find is labelled as GT-S5830iXXLK3 so would this be the correct firmware for my handsets as i thought they were listed by Baseband (which is XXLK1 not XXLK3 but the bit in the phone's build number says XXLK3 even though the actual phone's Baseband says XXLK1) can you see why i am confused? lol!
I'd like to be as sure as i can be prior to flashing so i don't make any silly mistakes.
I have:
KIES software,
USB Drivers (i think)
ODIN v3.07 software,
Standard Samsung supplied USB cable,
Windows 7 32bit.
Can anyone help me to understand why the firmware sets are in several split files and help confirm which firmware i do actually need for the baseband type of my two handsets.
I'm also intending to make a backup of each phone prior to flashing so i hopefully do not brick any devices. Maybe i could even read the firmware of one phone and flash to the other? Perhaps i'll just stick to finding a suitable stock firmware and keep it simple
Any help, information, education is all appreciated, and i hope as a noob to the forum i haven't breached any set rules with this post (i don't think i have but you never know!)
Kindest regards,
Drew

read my thread or signature.
I have loaded KIES and got some more information:
On the older SAMSUNG GALAXY ACE GT-S5830i (unlocked to all networks) it says: PDA:LK3 / PHONE: LK1 / CSC: LK1 (BTU)
On the newer SAMSUNG GALAXY ACE GT-S5830i (locked and branded o2) it says: PDA:LK3 / PHONE: LK1 / CSC: LK1 (O2U)
So clearly i can see the difference here between the new phone with it's o2 network branded firmware, and assume that the only thing i need to change over on the new phone is the CSC part, which ODIN looks like it can do by simply adding a new CSC file in.
Anyway, i went to the SamMobile Firmware site and have downloaded:
GT-S5830i - United Kingdom - BTU
PDA: S5830IXXLK3
CSC: S5830IBTULK1
Version: 2.3.6
Date: 2012-11-23
...which gives me a zip file named: S5830IXXLK3_S5830IBTULK1_BTU.zip
Here's where i just got more confused lol... the thread you pointed me to gets a bit confusing as lots of people are posting allsorts on it, but am i right in thinking once i have that file i just downloaded i go into ODIN v3.07 and just add that file into the PDA section and then untick all the boxes? This seems a bit different to some of the other Odin instructions i have read where they say tick certain boexes and do this, do that etc...
This way seems to be involving reflashing the PDA, and PHONE sections maybe? Am i not just wanting to flash CSC parts? I am SO confused now.
Can anyone help clarify a little more? I can't quite see how you make a firmware backup using ODIN before proceeding to actual flashing. I'd like to make a backup first before i do anything

Date: 2012-11-23

if you want only the UK one, search on sammobile.com, u might find it!
why do you want stock rom?
you could install firmwares of other countries but u "might" face network problems!
backup your imei via galaxy toolbox app if you do so!!
u could flash a custom rom!!
