USB jig not resetting counter - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I just received my USB jig I ordered from eBay, and for some reason the flash counter isn't being reset. The phone enters download mode, and states it has cleared that data but when I boot it back up and check the count is where it was.
Has anyone else had a similar issue?
Cheers

hmm maybe the USB jig isnt fully functional, I remember reading that if it isnt soldered with a certain ohm it might not work..but not sure tho best ask in the USB jig thread...

sounds like you got a bogus one or it died during transport. If you can try to pry it open and make sure everything soldered is still connected. Otherwise its probably just a dud.

Thanks for the help guys. I believe the person I bought it from is also active on these forums, so hopefully he'll replace it asap
Thanks again

Try to replace from where u got it....

i have issue with usb jig too, i had it for a few months and it was working flawless, but today when i tried to reset the binary counter it didn`t worked that well...
i switched my phone off and waited until the vibration, then plugged the usb jig and after a few secs the factory mode appeared but it was still showing the custom binary and the yellow triangle after reboot...
so do you think the jig broke down or samsung put some kind of a new protection in the recent roms. i`m running 2.3.5 CheckRom Revolution HD 3.1.1...

What kernel rev are you running? The more recent ones have a new bootloader that no longer works with the jig.

You probably have new bootloader from Samsung while updating to 2.3.5. Look for how to get old bootloader back on your device or how to get the jig to reset the counter with new bootloader and it will work.

I had the same problem, but this Patch solved it! It's because samsung disabled the reset counter function since android 2.3.4

It worked for me.. I have Siyah 2.1.1 and Checkrom 3.1.1 running

It works... thanks!

All packages below this point have the old bootloader so you can safely reset the binary counter with a Jig.
If you've already flashed a full package from elsewhere or updated using KIES and cannot reset your binary counter using the Jig just flash this package in the PDA or Bootloader section of Odin to replace the bootloaders and then you can reset the counter: http://www.multiupload.com/LQQBRQVJUD
Here are the new bootloader tarball if you want to flash them back after resetting your binary counter: http://www.multiupload.com/5LNOCL7KPV

I don't mean to bring up an old thread, but it seems more apt to continue the conversation than to start a new one.
What is the latest version ROM that has a boot img that is still "jig-able"?
I had CheckROM v4 (KK5 based), then tried the leaked ICS (LP2). I then restored back to my old ROM via CWM recovery (I made a backup before), and while everything is back, I have this yellow exclamation mark. The jig doesn't work anymore. I assume CWM does not restore the bootloader, just the system, data, and cache. I even noticed the modem was left at LP1 (I used to have KI4).
Thanks.

You need to use ODIN to flash a stock rom to restore the device completely to factory
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16781156&postcount=2
I used xwki8 from the link above via odin to be able to use the jig.
I then turned my phone off, used the jig to boot into download mode to flash cwm and miui. Doing it this way seems to have prevented me getting the "I'm not official and shall spam a giant annoying yellow triangle at you" symbol
Hope this helps

Not the answer I wanted to hear, but I guess I had no choice. I was hoping I could just flash the boot loader by itself, but I couldn't find it as a separate image.
So that's what I did - flashed stock, rooted, and started all over.
Thanks.

CWM Question

Hey guys
I've never modded my phone at all when it comes to custom ROM's, etc. My friend told me today that he flashed a CM9 ICS nightly build and it sparked some interest in me.
I read that to get the CM9 ROM you need to have CWM installed on your phone. Is that necessary? If so, why?
I also read that it will void my phones warranty if I install CWM...now obviously nothing is "suppose" to go wrong with the phone while doing this process and I heard that if the phone is soft bricked it can be recovered with nvflash (is this true?).
Finally, is there anything stopping me from flashing a stock bootloader (is that what CWM is?) onto the phone and then a stock ROM, allowing me to do a return on the phone without them knowing?
I'm completely new to this and this whole forum is so confusing and the only real easy instructions I found were on the CM9 site.
Thanks guys,
Elliott
EDIT: I also just saw on this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uK-k3KfY5c
He used some sort of USB dongle at the end for something...what did it do?
Everything you need and more in the relevant thread. With such basic questions and the apparent lack of ability to search, read and digest information, you would be wiser to stick to stock, official ROMs though.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419102
Thanks but of course that did not answer any of my questions. I have already seen that and obviously you didn't read my post correctly. I am more interested in the warranty issues with doing this...and if it's possible to comletely revert everything to the point where they can't tell what was done with the phone...I have searched around.
What issues do you think you'll run into that will warrant you sending the phone in? Im on my second samsung phone and they've been flawless, warranty be damned, flash away.
CWM "clockworkmod" is a recovery mode replacement for the stock SGS2.
It's used to do a number of things, one of which is to flash items to the device such as full roms or kernels. I'll let you read up on the rest. Without the need to have your device connected to a pc.
Flashing anything unofficial is bound to void your warranty whether via CWM or Odin etc.
The older bootloader allows the use of a USB jig to reset the warning triangle and flash counter to conceal any warranty voiding activity. At some point (can't remember when) Samsung updated the bootloader to prevent the jig working. A simple flash of the older one fixes the issue and doesn't appear to affect the device usage.
There are some great articles on xda to read about flashing etc. Worth a look.
Hope this helps.

Hey
Well I'm not planning on the phone having any issues...but you never know what could happen...When I first got my SGS2 the home button stopped working within 24 hours and I had to go back and get another one...
I'm just saying anything could happen...ex: buttons breaking, etc.

Hey thanks for posting.
So you're saying that if I flash CWM, and then need to return the phone for whatever reason, I can install the original Samsung recovery tool that was there prior to installing CWM? Is that what you mean by "a simple flash of the older one..."?
Basically, if I ever need to return the phone, can I make it reset 100% original so that even if they knew how to check for stuff like CM9 and CWM, they wouldn't be able to find out that it was ever installed?
And when Samsung releases their official firmware and I decide I want to flash to that one, can I still use it? I'm guessing I could just flash it normally using CWM, but what if I wanted to go back to 100% original and update from there?

Well that kind of attitude just irks me.
Unless I lack the ability to count, you asked a total of five questions, all of which are answered in that thread and countless others around this forum.
Anyway, your apparent main concern has to do with wanting to commit fraud. If you're okay with that, keep going. I guess since you're happy to break forum rules (rule #1), why not try and fudge a warranty claim?
Yes you can return your device to completely Telco/carrier stock.
If you want to do it...
Make a CWM backup.
Backup everything to pc from internal SD. A simple copy will do.
Use CWM to format internal SD.
Boot into download mode and flash Telco/carrier stock firmware via Odin.
Use jig to reset flash counter.
Use stock recovery to wipe device.
This should be as it was when you pulled it out of the box on day one.
When you get it back use cfroot kernel to root via Odin.
Copy SD card backup from pc to SD.
Restore CWM backup.
Should now be as it was before resetting to stock. Except maybe the modem if you like a different one from Telco/carrier stock.

Yes CWM is removed by flashing official firmware so original recovery from then.
If jig doesn't work use Odin to flash the old bootloader. It definitely will work then.

What's the difference between the two?
The first link has the entire rom, the 2nd has just the kernel. However...
These links have been dead for a while now, so you'll need to head over to Samfirmware.com & search for the firmware you need. Follow whatever instructions they have for flashing firmware downloaded from their site.

Thanks. And what is the difference between just the kernel and the whole thing? Is kernel just another word for bootloader? I looked up the terms briefly...
Also, samfirmware.com doesn't have the one I have...is there another source or something?
The rom has stuff like themes, fonts, and other stuff (nuts & bolts) the kernel is like the engine (controls stuff like WiFi, controls everything you can do as root, etc). The package containing the whole rom also has the kernel in it.
No idea. Do a Google search. Alternatively, you can get the latest firmware available for your country/carrier (which may or may not be the same as the one you're looking for, depending on whether the carrier has updated firmware since the one you're looking for was released) with the PC version of Checkfus (do a search for it on here Google).
Edit to add - A better analogy for rom/kernel. Think of your phone as a car. The kernel is the engine, the rom is everything else/the car itself.

I think everyone has cleared everything else for you, so I'll talk about the jig! Firstly you most likely have the new bootloader so your flash counter will still be on, therefore your warranty will still be void. LUCKILY there's an app called TriangleAway (made my Chainfire) which you can find with a simple search, this will let you reset your flash counter and get rid of the yellow triangle as long as you're running a rooted ICS ROM (like CM9) and you can then flash back to stock and all traces of any root will be gone. There is a warning that the app can brick your phone but through my many uses of it, it has never happened and no-one has reported any brick.
Cool thanks for your help!

[Q] Current Binary From Custom to Official Samsung

Hi, I have downloaded some firmwares to my Samsung galaxy s2. The last firmware I put on was Official I thought but in download mode where is says "Curent Binary" it says custom. How do I get that back to official samsung? Is there a way through kies, like with iPhone where itunes can reinstall the os?
Also does a firmware that is vodafone branded be put on a handset that is on the three network? Would it affect the signal?
Thanks
Get a jig from eBay. If you find the jig doesn't work, flash the 'old' bootloader from here. Yes you can flash Vodafone branded firmware on a phone that uses 3's network. No, it shouldn't affect the signal. These things are dependent on your modem, and most roms don't replace your existing modem.
I flashed using a firmware from this site. http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9100&r=-1#modelsa and it returned it to the Samsung Official. Everything is back to standard.

Is flashing the old bootloader safe on a custom ROM? Even if it's an AOKP ROM? Cheers.
Yep.
However, some roms may not boot with the old bootloader (In saying that, I'm running it with CM9, but I didn't muck around with stock versions of ICS beforehand which might have changed it to a BL which doesn't work with CM9). If in doubt, ask the developer of the custom rom you're using if it works OK with the old bootloader (I presume you want to get rid of the boot triangle ?).
Obviously you run a very small risk of bricking your phone every time you flash anything, and you only flash/mess with bootloaders when you have a specific reason for same.
Having to send your phone to Samsung/your carrier for warranty service is one of those reasons, and if you've gone back to stock & your jig won't work, flashing the old bootloader is a simple no mucking around way of getting it done.

I just got my phone back from repair and they upgraded it to the latest version of ICS with the ICS Bootloader. I've flashed Hydrogen-ICS and I've got the yellow triangle, obviously the USB jig won't sort it because of the bootloader. There's no disadvantage to having the triangle other than if I need to send it back under warranty is there? I think I might just leave it and sort it if the time comes.
Ahhhh OK. Gotcha
No, the triangle is only a 'cosmetic' thing. You could probably flash the old bootloader, get rid of the triangle, flash the new bootloader, and be on your merry way. But if it doesn't bother you & you've got Hydrogen running the way you want & everything is hunky dory otherwise, there's no need to do it

Though it took some work didnt reconize the device after a good 30mins of pluging and pulling and restarting. I also found some apps can stop kies working apparently, ones from market not on pc. And i had a custome 2.3.6. I just fancied having back to normal till i get bored again.

"Triangle Away" is an app by Chainfire on the Play Store. Costs a couple bucks, but you don't have to flash an old bootloader and/or wait for a USB jig to get to you, which is your other option.

You can avoid the counter increase, simply flash your archives via CWM instead of doing it via Odin. It won't update the counter, so the triangle won't appear

wow someone need to fix his knowledge for this!
---------- Post added at 10:58 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:51 AM ----------
tutorial kinda................ thats how i run
1: flashed cwm (attached) via odin
2: wiped everything, including system
3: flashed stock ICS via odin
4: rooted via cf-root
5: used triangle away to reset counter and triangle
6: install mobile odin
7: flashed the cwm kernel extracted from the same and flashed using mobile odin [zimage]
8: now i have cwm without counter and triangle.
9: flashed cm9 using cwm
now i can flash whatever rom via cwm, without counter issue.
you want to flash kernel use mobileodin again and you wont update counter.
hope this helps.
EDiT: odin is 99.9% for stock ROM's thus will not raise counter. only when you flash cwm for the first time with odin you get counter + triangle.
hope this helps.

Bootlooping - even after flashing Siyah

A couple days ago, my Galaxy s2 i-777 (unrooted stock) would not start up past the splash screen. Today, I finally tried to do a factory reset in recovery mode, and there was a message about not being able to access some csc folder. My phone remained in bootloop, and when I tried to get back to recovery mode - I would see the dreadful "Deleting Cryption Meta data" message.
I proceeded to try the instructions in this post : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27368753&postcount=7
I managed to flash my phone with CWM5.0.3 using Odin (The PDA option - is that right?) It changed my splash screen to one with 9100 on the front, and a yellow triangle. My flash counter was also incremented to 1.
I then attempted to flash with the Siyah kernel again using Odin (with the PDA option). The good news is that I can now get to Siyah's Recovery mode, but the phone is still bootlooping. And I'm pretty sure my flash counter has incremented again.
Here's my difficulty:
1. I want to find a way to get my images/videos off my phone. (We just had our first kid and all his photos from birth are in there :|)
2. I plan to get a jig, reset my counter and restore to stock unrooted. Is this still possible?
How do I do these two things?
Thanks so much everyone - I've really appreciated all the posts I've been reading for assistance already!
=======
So I figured out how to get my photos/videos off - amazingly, even after a factory reset - they are all still in my phone! I decided to re-flash CWM as suggested in the post linked above. Went to the recovery menu and did a clear data/factory reset. I was about to try the format sd card option (which admittedly I had skipped earlier because I was concerned about losing photos/vids) but then decided to try mounting the sd card instead. Then I reconnected the phone to my computer and was able to use it as a USB storage device, and view all my files! Now I'm copying over my app data, pics and videos.
I just ordered a jig off amazon, and hopefully I'll be able to reset my counter and return to stock. I'm still not sure why my phone is bootlooping though. Any ideas?

You are correct but, he would be flashing KH7 GB so the jig would clear it.... Triangle Away works on ICS and has risks "!!! THIS IS A DANGEROUS OPERATION AND COULD POTENTIALLY BRICK YOUR DEVICE. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK. A USB JIG IS PREFERRED IF YOU HAVE A WORKING ONE !!!" (and by brick I mean brick - only a board replacement or a JTAG unit will be able to save you, don't mess with boot(loader) stuff unless you *really* mean it!) via Chainfire you're better never tripping the counter......

AFAIK, this tool only works with ICS.
Please inform.
Is it a boot loop-where your screen will go black attempting to continue booting, then re initiate the previous animation? Or just a failure to boot-where it's just hanging on an animation with no black pauses to indicate any kind of process completion?

It a boot loop if the phone tries to boot over and over again, only reaching a certain point, usually the initial (kernel) splash screen, then restarting again. However, many fail to boot scenarios are commonly lumped into the somewhat generic term boot loop.
Poor wordage on my part lol, that differentiation was what I was trying to ask the op

[Q] Non-Responsive Touchscree & ODIN Won't Flash

Ok, I flashed the experimental 4.2.1 update from temasek earlier. flashed his custom kernel. all worked fine.
Told me my SD Card was 'damaged', which I now understand just needed a fix which was provided. However I decided to just forget it and restore my nandroid backup i'd taken the previous night.
Checked the folder was there, which it was, so booted to CWM, did all the wipes and chose "restore". much to my horror, it failed to find any files.
stupid mistake part: i decided to flash the perseus kernel back over the top to see if the CWM would recognise my nandroid files and restore them
the screen just went mad - had blue lines all over the place, the samsung logo jumped about and the screen went off.
i booted back to CWM and found the touchscreen was unresponsive. everything else worked - buttons, CWM. The phone is also recognised in ODIN, so I grabbed the latest stock JB leak and flashed it. it flashed fine, but it was a middle eastern rom, which didn't help, and the touchscreen was still dead.
the PC still recognised it, so i coped the temasek files back on to see if i could re-flash those, which i did, but still no luck with the touchscreen.
flashed the JB leak again with ODIN, which worked. plugged it in to the PC and copied across a nandroid backup folder i'd taken earlier in the evening last night, since the other one seems to not work. rebooted and it still wouldn't find it.
Now i've got the latest stock rom for the uk but ODIN just won't flash anything - the phone is recognised, the MD5 sum on the rom checks out but i always get "Complete(Write) operation failed" error each time. I plug the phone in to the PC, and it recognises it just fine, but KIES is sitting on the "connecting" screen and not doing anything - i've reinstalled the latest drivers as well.
I'm starting to be resigned to the fact i've killed it, but if anyone has any ideas, i'd be hugely grateful - thankyou
touchscreen dead is getting more and more common. Not sure what is going on but if u cant flash anything from odin maybe u have dead mmc chip or something. Hopefully you resolve it or a trip to sammy service centre hopefully can fix under warranty for u
Edit close down all kies software whilst using odin

i dont have warranty as the phone was bought second hand.
i'm just on the phone to my insurance providers though for accidental damage ..it might mean i have to drop it downstairs though !
ooeerr .. rebooted my PC, reconnected to ODIN and it's flashing the UK Stock ROM i got .. fingers crossed. I really don't want to have to drop it downstairs. The insurers will want to inspect it and if there's a custom rom on it, it might get bounced

unfortunately your touchscreen died and your only option is to bring it for warranty because of the bad flash, if you have warranty i suggest follow my simple guide here.

i'll see what i can do but it's now stuck in a bootloop after flashing the rom i grabbed earlier, so will try another one.
i might have to kill it stone dead if none of this works
each rom i try in ODIN never boots - just goes into a bootloop.
i suppose if the insurers do inspect it, they may well not be able to get to see the flash counter if they can't boot it up - so it'll have a stock, unrooted rom on it anyway, so does anyone think i'll be ok ?

at the moment i can't access anything - it just sits at the samsung logo now. CWM is now no longer accessible either - i pop the battery, wait a few minutes then put it back in. I hold down Up/Power/Middle button and the Samsung Logo flashes, but nothing happens.
I can still put it in to download mode and flash roms with odin, but nothing happens .. i think i'm going to have to accept it's dead
My last roll of the dice is to grab one of the earlier roms from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1835931
and see what that does in ODIN
FYI:
1. you don't have to wipe anything before restoring a backup, it doesn't make a difference.

Good job i don't live in the US then ..
I'm pretty sure it's illegal no matter where you live
Well I don't particularly want to get into an argument here, as i'd much prefer a phone that works so i'll just thank you for your input.
i think you have to solve the bootloop issue first by searching in the forum, im not expert so cant give you better advice on bootloop,

thanks. it doesn't actually bootloop now, it just sits on the glowing samsung logo and doesn't move.
i just want to get a stock rom back on it and i'm going to just let it go. i'm a bit concerned that on the download screen it says "Custom Binary Download: Yes (19 Counts)". I know I did reset the flash counter not too long ago before I flashed the Darky Rom, so if this is indeed the flash counter, then i've obviously not done something right, so it'll show multiple flashes ..
ok, we've had developments ..
i actually got it in to CWM (don't know how..) and did a factory reset. it then did boot up into the OS but - no touchscreen still.
however, i've just tried connecting it to KIES and it's detected it so i'm going to try the emergency recovery thing ..
he says, as he selects the option and KIES then goes back to "connecting" .. *GROAN* .. and then comes back to tell me it's not supported to upgrade firmware via KIES .. *BIGGER GROAN*
Ok, downloaded and flashed an earlier rom for the UK but still no luck with the screen. Kies won't do any kind of emergency firmware upgrade either so that's that. i'll have to try and get one of those OTG USB dongles so i can get the flash counter reset though ..

[Q] SGH-i717 Home Keys not working

Hi there i have a SGH-i717 with AT&T 2.3.4 Stock installed..I did have Cyanogen 10.1 and Avatar all installed in the last 72hrs..I have wiped all that and did a return to the stock AT&T thinking that my HOME keys would return..NO LUCK..The problems started about 4 days ago when the phone started turning itself off automatically..I changed custom ROM's etc to try and fix the problem..then i read to use Kies to try and do a Firmware Upgrade and Initialization to go back to the start when i first got the phone..But now Kies will NOT recognise the phone..I have re-installed drives, Kies to no avail..Any tips ?
Also someone suggested to flash this kernel h0tcakez-JB-Kernel-v2.3.5-ALT but when i tried through system recovery is gives a falied error..
I have nothing on the phone i need to worry about loosing...Cheers

If you are on stock 2.3.4 and tried to flash that kernel .. that is why it failed .. it would be the wrong kernel for that rom. Did you flash a stock rom in recovery? If so then I would suggest using oden to return to stock . then see what you end up with.

Thanx for you reply..I did however flash stock 2.3.4 from oden..I deleted everything in recovery then went to oden and flashed the stock rom..Should i unroot/unbrick flash from oden?
That article about returning to original settings in Kies seems to make sense except for the fact that i cannot get Kies to recognise the phone...
Are we talking about Software ou Hardare issue in your opinion?
Cheers
Could be a hardware issue. Try this ... Put the phone into download mode then connect to the pc. Use the cable that came with the phone. Also use a port on the back of the pc ..not a hub. Then open kies and do the emergency firmware update.
Also ... When you used Odin to go to stock ..you installed the 3e recovery ..that's why it failed to flash. Which is a good thing. That kennel would have boot looped you.

Yep i used it..very good..But my original and main problem..Continues..NONE of my HOME keys are working..I fear that it is a Hardware issue with the SGH-i717..I guess i have to take it to Samsung for repair..Until someone else can give me a solution..I have tried everything and nothing has worked..No HOME keys..Cheers
Definitely not a hardware issue, there where some changes made IIRC in the kernel driver files, once flashed they prevented the homerow buttons from working normally, the only way I ever found to make them work right was to flash the Flappjaxxx alternate kernel series, let it boot, then return completely to stock!
If you dig around, FJ's alt kernel's are around here somewhere!

Good morning, well i believe i have finally arrived at a possible solution..I have searched hi and low for these Flappjaxxx alternate kernel ..I came up with a daunting array of alternatives for the complete amatuer as i am..I appreciate that your time is precious but i do need some general direction what exactly i am searching for..I have found this one but to be quite honest i am not sure if i need this whole ROM or just the Flappjaxxx alternate kernel'a..

My work schedule is absolute hell, and due to people flaking at work I have been called in 2x to cover on my only days off...
Needless to say, im about to pass out, so im going to make this useless post...
Either I, or someone else can link you to a FJ rom, and the FJ alternate kernel that match, what you will need to do prior is make sure you have EVERYTHING you want/need, backed up to GMail (in the case of Phone logs, SMS and MMS with the Backup to GMail app, yes, im whoring this fantastic app out) AND to your computer, NO not your SD card, but your computer!
Make sure you have the latest recovery (TWRP 2.5.0.0 is what I have, but whatever TWRP is latest will do), wipe everything, then install the rom, boot, wait 10min, reboot into recovery, flash the alt kernel, boot, wait 10min, then test the home/back/menu/search key row, they should work, at this point, you CAN go back to the 2.x.x rom you where running, but if you have an i717, I have had nothing but love for the Stock rom update on AT&T once I performed a complete ODIN to it (flashing the ones here on the forum's resulted in random reboots here and there, and while less then ever before, still annoying, after an ODIN however, havent had a random reboot yet!).
There are issues with the GNote i717 JB release, many posted here, and quite a few here:
http://forums.att.com/t5/Android-Di...getting-Jelly-Bean-update/td-p/3421041/page/5
Including my own rant towards the bottom...
