Hi all,
I have a Bell Atrix.
Flashed 2.1.1 french SBF and running GingerBlur 4.5.
Trying to use the built-in 'Mobile hotspot' tethering feature.
I get "Account not set up for Wi-Fi hotspot"... message from AT&T.
The only way to get around this is to add "default, tether" to my APN type. This allows the Mobile hotspot to start, but then I have to go back in and remove the APN type otherwise I have no connectivity to the Bell network.
And basically I have to do these steps all over again when I want to re-enable it.
Anybody got a fix for this, or a better solution? I don't like 3rd party barnacle/wifi-tether apps, for some reason the built-in mobile hotspot works perfect every time.
Thank you,

Does anyone know how to access AT&T Wifi Hotspots with the Streak? I have an unlimited data plan and should be able to access them for free (I used to on my BB's) but the Streak does not auto authenticate...?
Are you running a carrier unlocked Streak?
I bought the unlocked Streak last month and the apps to authenticate the phone on the AT&T wireless hotspots are not on the phone.
I have not tried calling AT&T yet to see if there is another way to get access.
I am actually using DJ Steve's ROM .

Maybe someone has the apps and can share with those of us on AT&T who have unlocked Streaks?
I have found that if you install battery doctor (free app - market) and go to settings, its gives you the option to turn on the WIFI hotspot. You can then configer security for it.

This discussion is about the free WiFi hotspots provided by AT&T. In the US almost every McDonalds and a lot of other places have WiFi provided by AT&T. If you are an AT&T customer these are supposed to be free to connect to, but the software that is on AT&T locked phones is not on unlocked phones purchased from Dell. Using these free WiFi hotspots helps prevent using up your data allotment.
I believe that what you are talking about is turning on the portable WiFi hotspot that the phone can provide to other devices.
Sorry I misread the post.
ATT Hotspot - There is no App
You connect to AT&T hotspots through settings. Do the following:
Settings>Wireless & Networks > Wi-Fi settings then select attwifi.
It's been a while since I did this so I don't remember is you may be asked for your AT&T email account and password.
There is no app. It's just a setup.
Edit: Forgot to say you have to be at the hotspot e.g. McDonalds to setup the connections.

Not as simple as that. You get a page saying you can sign up for AT&T wifi or login to your existing wifi account. If you have an iPhone it connects with no issue.

I Just rooted my phone using Super One Click rooter and unlocked it using SGS Unlock Pro app from the market. I'm trying to unlock it on Roger's network (i think its the same as AT&T)
Thing is i cannot connect to the internet/data on the phone, it says to check connection settings but i dont know what i need to change. Phone calls and texting works just not data.
Any help would be great, i am pretty new at this stuff and have spent the past 3 days trying to figure this all out
You need to change the proxy setting to those of your network service provide. Just call the customer care and ask them for the detailed info about that, they'll probably send you a sms carrying the settings for you to install based on your device.
If that doesn't work (I had that issue) just manually enter the settings after you ask the agent about them or better yet check them out on the internet. Usually service providers post them on their official sites under GPRS, EDGE or 3G.
Weird i just changed my APN to internet.com and it works
Hi,
I received the phone yesterday, put in the SIM which has data enabled on my old phone.
Voice calls work fine but I get a message saying that there is limited data connectivity. WIFI works fine.
Initially when I went through the set up process MotoBlur could not connect (later realised my WIFI was down) So I turned off Motoblur using Bluroff.
I have set up the phone with my gmail account and downloaded the market app. the version of the market app I have is 2.3.6.
My system details are as follows:
System V4.1.83
Android version 2.2.2
Baseband N_01.77.15p
I thought it might be the APN considering I am using it in AUS and it is an AT&T phone. Confirmed the APN with another phone on the same carrier and still no joy.
I have even inserted the other SIM to ensure it was not mine.
Data connections have all been switched to the on position, I also dowloaded an APN toggle to ensure that the data connection was on.
I have full bars from the carrier with an H+ symbol next to the bars.
There is a small window for me to send the phone back. I am hoping there is a simple explanation though.
Thank you in advance.
Was your last phone an iphone? If it was you need to switch the data plan.

Thanks,
I will go back to the carrier to confirm my access.
Hi
I recently received a replacement handset from Orange due to a cracked screen.
During Hurricane Bawbag we had a power cut, but as I still had signal and laptop battery I decided to use wireless tethering. I could connect to the phone but could not receive any data. I also tried wired tethering and got the same result. I have no problems receiving data on the phone itself.
With my previous x10 tethering worked fine, it was debranded to generic UK. I'm not sure if this is why it worked? I'm out of contract now and due an upgrade from Orange. When they get a phone I want, I will be giving the x10 to a friend so I would rather not mess about debranding it again.
Anyone know of a solution to this problem without debranding?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Tris
you should search the forums before posting, but anyway...
yeah, orange added a new APN..
the existing APN's were "orangeinternet" used for your mobile data...
and "orangemms" used for MMS messages...
the additional APN now included is "consumerbroadband" which is automatically used when tethering, either via wifi or usb, but orange only allows data through this APN if you purchase a tethering bundle....
the work around for this is easy, u just need to edit the consumerbroadband APN and change it to oranngeinternet settings, so tethering will work as if it was your phone....
recent orange branded handsets do not allow you to edit these settings, but if this is the case, just hit menu and "add APN" and create another APN with the same settings and it will work..
settings can be found here...

I’ve figured out a way to get tethering to work once with my Lumia 920 on ATT.
The below process has to be repeated every time so it is not really a solution but may help somebody smarter figure out a solution.
Insert ATT SIM
Enable internet sharing (fails with call ATT message)
Insert Vodfone SIM ( I assume any non active sim will work, this one is from an old blackberry )
Enable internet sharing (fails)
Insert ATT SIM
Enable internet sharing (works!)
Only works once though, when you disable and re-enable it goes back to the call ATT message.
Somebody needs to jailbreak this phone so we can change whatever registry setting is causing this.
I'm able to use tethering on my ATT 920 using the access point app, I just re-added the APN settings and that's it
note: I'm using it on a non ATT network

It is known this works fine on other networks if you manage to unlock the 920.
What people want to do is get tethering working on AT&T. It's basically impossible, though. It quickly loads the APN settings when there is an AT&T SIM, and that includes checking the tethering entitlement. We have no registry access so we can't change this behavior, even with the Access Point app. You could on WP7 devices if you had registry access, the same modification should work if there ever is a way to get registry access on WP8.
I tried AT&T ROM, Rogers ROM, and Euro Dev ROM. All of them checked entitlement and told me to call AT&T. I was able to get the Rogers ROM to tether once on first bootup, probably due to the same quirk that allows it to work the way the OP described. Overall it's not a very feasible solution, especially since opening the SIM slot is a pain on the 920. Tethering is one reason why my 920 has been relegated to being a secondary phone and why I use my GN2. Even though I don't really like Android, it is easily modified to allow tethering whether AT&T is happy about it or not.
Ok I understand.
Sidenote: How did you manage to install a non AT&T ROM? I always get the FFU device id mismatch when trying to put a non AT&T rom on the phone.

NCS will allow you to flash the Rogers pre-portico ROM. You can now flash Rogers and Euro ROMs, not sure about AT&T. From there you use the built in upgrade functionality to get Portico. Once you have portico NCS will let you flash Rogers Portico and Euro Portico ROMs. But I was not able to get back to pre-portico or to AT&T from there. I was flashing a 920 with a defective proximity sensor that I mailed back to AT&T the next day, so it didn't really matter.
LTE connectivity was giving issues with non-AT&T ROM. Rogers ROM took a while to connect to LTE (much longer than AT&T ROM) and the Euro ROM never really seemed to connect to LTE.
