recently upgraded from stock Hero 2.1 to Elelinux7.1.0 mod (android 2.3)
it was good but too laggy on "Angry birds" ;-) so i tried Fusion!ROM 2.2 and eventually settled on Elelinux 6.2
One thing i noticed about all of these ROMS was I'd lost some functionality on the phone app
on 2.1 i used to be able to start typing a persons name using alpha characters on the phone number pad and it would resolve to the best matches. much faster than scrolling through a contacts list
so if fro example i type 7838.... it would be looking for number beginning 7838 but also suggesting any contacts called "Steve" because of the alpha characters on those keys.
My friend's stock Samsung galaxy S running android 2.2 does this so i know it's not something that's been removed in later versions
Non of these new ROMS seems to do this. Has this functionality been removed from the underlying (Cyanogen ?) build or am i missing something obvious and the autosearch needs to be switched on in the settings somewhere.
(or can anyone suggest a Froyo ROM that does have this functionality please because i really miss it ?)
cheers
Glen
That feature was the HTC dialer.
Try GoContacts or Dialerone from the Market.
Brilliant, thanks !
i guess Samsung must also have their own version that doe the same
Cheers

I find touch pal dialer is the least laggy alternative dialer. why stock doesnt include this search function is beyond me.
thanks, i tried a few different ones and that's the app i settled on too.
It's really good as it does "fuzzy" searches not just what the name you are looking for begins with
Although I've got it on my main screen and associated it with the physical phone button it would be good if i could drop it onto the bottom task bar in place of the stock phone dialer.
Anyone know how to do that ?

Hello,
I've got a great rom that I am using - and am trying to figure out if I can modify the dialer that's built in.
I posted question here, since I figure it's generic enough that people would want to update/uninstall dialers to use their preferred one.
Is this possible? Or only if the ROM itself lists the dialer in the remove programs screen. I'm guessing this only happens if the chef cooked like that.
If it matters - the Rom is Tai's v4. Everything else is fantastic, but while he works on v5, I kinda need a better dialer. Call log, delay between dialing, and lack of smartdial almost forces me to run a different rom. would rather fix the dialer, if that's easy enough to do.
Thanks!
Hi!
I've been using dialer one instead of the google dialer for a while but compared to the HTC sense dialer the big draw back is that there is no groups page.
Anyone know of a good dialer to try?
Cheers,
Zasten

NubDial or Superdial?
http://www.appbrain.com/app/acontacts/kz.mek.aContacts
Moved to Q&A as not development. Please do not make a new thread in development to ask a question
It's too bad people aren't responding to this old thread, because the Samsung Dialer has the ability to swipe right for calls and left for texting. I can't find anything else that has something similar.
Thats because imo there are no good dialers in comparison to sense dialer. Wonder if gingerbread will change that and give us smart dial. Its really such a basic function, cant see how they cant integrate it

+1 for this, great and fast Dialer.
I'm using Dialer One. Fast and functional.

I'm using this one aswell. The fastest dialer I've tried to date.
I had problems with Youlu, with sending USSC codes.
I have a code. ie *108#.
and using the Youlu it skips the #, and dials *108
sad, as the app besides that is good.

Has anyone tried to replace the froyo stock dialer with the sense dialer, on a froyo rom (eg CM6)?
I could imagine taking the dialer apk from a froyo sense rom and pushing it to a CM6 but my guess is that it can't be this easy....thoughts?
Youlu adress book promts me regualrily about subscribing to their service, it's a no go. Also I am unable to even input USSD codes (recharging as I am on prepaid) 'cause It won't show me the * and # keys.
I like Phonebook 2.0
http://www.appbrain.com/app/phonebook-2-0/com.voxmobili.phonebook2
but it's overdone with the aim to replace the Sense Dialer and Adressbook.
But I like the fuzzy dialing ( 2539 for ALEX ) with dialer One has.
Worth a look though.
I think fast dialer is good too if you got Russian Friends written natively in your adressbook.
Touchpal dialer is also quite good. The market description is all in Chinese, but it runs in English just fine as well. It has all the features of DialerOne but runs faster.
Youlu is quick and simple for me. I like it.
It's support thai (my native) and english
To all: try Gocontacts for dialer and contact manager, then post comments about it here... i tried them all and this one is my favorite !!
Go contact market link
Ok, so I am starting a new thread as I didn't find any answer, neither have received a reply previously in other threads (Specific roms threads)
In custom roms such as Cyanogen's and [email protected]'s - no Sense roms - the Dialer is very basic.
Actually, it is impossible to get a contact filtering when entering numbers (what T9 does in SMS/Messages apps... Ok, I don't know how to explain that in a comprehensive sentence, but I hope you get it)
I played with a rom that a friend of mine installed on his Galaxy S, and the Dialer is pretty much the same, such as Google phones with basic android software, no additional features,... But that one has the predictive thing....
Is there a way to implement this feature within the phone (Dialer) apk of custom roms?
Thank you guys for ... Well, first, trying to understand what I wrote, ... and then for your answers!
Try Dialer One
take phone dialer
Thank you guys, for answering.
I know Dialer One, but don't like it, ... Have to discover TAKEPhONE dialer...
However, I wanted to know if it was possible to add the feature in the original phone application for Legend, as it seems to be implemented in the dialer from the custom rom for Galaxy S... (I assume it is...)
Because that app, the original phone app above mentioned, is pretty much the exact same app than the one for our Legend, except it has the T9 filter feature.
Thank you guys, anyway !!!
thank you for your effort

Try different dialers. There are a ton in the market. As far as I know, you can't change this behavior in the default dialer on a stock Samsung firmware.
Sounds like you want it to work like an iPhone. I'm not trying to be combative, but if that's so, why did you get rid of your iPhone?
You could always try installing MIUI, that ROM seems popular with ex-iPhone users.
The only way to get what you are talking about is to root your phone and install a custom ROM that is themed to how you like and has different mods to change things such as the dialer. These things cant be changed if they are stock. There are enough ROMs around to suit everyone. The hardest part is finding the one you like.

A third party dialer app may suit his needs...

Take this for what it's worth... you're entering dangerous territory. You said yourself you are new to Android. Installing ROMs is not trivial, or something that should be taken lightly. I see more threads than I can count started by people who need help getting their phone working again because they blindly started flashing stuff when they really had no need.
And your only complaint at the moment is how the dialer functions. Why don't you slow down, and try out some dialer apps from the market? There are a ton of free ones. I know I suggested the MIUI ROM above, but I think this is better advice.
Lastly, ICS is still not officially released. Any ICS ROM out there right now is either based on a leak (and therefore full of bugs and is probably less than stable), or really a Gingerbread ROM themed to look like ICS.
thanks ctomgee
i try for some dialer, and i wait for official ics for s2

ICS is still in beta stage and giving advanced users problems so if you dont want to root and flash a custom ROM(GB not ICS) them maybe on the market you can find a 3rd party launcher while you wait.
Hello all, just updated my to ATT/ICS last week and thought this feature was to be included in the 4.0? After searching here for a bit I can't find any info. Wondering is there a way to do this with out rooting the phone or running a different launcher. TIA

that feature is available on Google's version of ICS, which is AOSP, but also in AOKP/CM9, I have AoCP from The Collective Team and I have full screen caller id, if you're running stock , well that's AT&T/Samsung's fault for not adding it to their dialer, you can try this app out and see if you like it, I don't think you need root for it or anything else. good luck

Hey thanks roloracer, this is kinda a no brainer Att Ics? Coming from a windows phone and boy that feature looks just great. Every day I'm getting closer to the ROOT of the matter. Thanks again.
Related question, but backwards.
How would you disable this feature?
Looked through all the options I can find in CM9 (h0tw1r3, not the official CM9) and can't find anything about it.
I don't have contact pictures for 75% of my contacts, and the ones I do have are seemingly tiny images that look terrible on the Note full screen.

the moment someone woudl sync with google .. there server saves the pics very samll so it woudl look bad for everyoneanyway.. thatfeature has been present on htc devices for a long time and i had a mod on my previous samsung phone rom to allow big pictures full res ,but you woudl have to NOT sync google contacts automaticallly and save them to vcard on your phone so you can reload the full res pictures , this issue has been on going since the first android device go look at google 's error reports youll see tht threads is thousands of pages ppl com:laugh::laugh::laughlaining .
@DAGr8*;
thanks for info ..........yes I was wondering , if there is a way to do this eg > lower the resolution of pic ( thus able to add bigger size for display on Ausoem note screen)
will that maybe solve this issue?
<< this feature was one of Major reasons why I went from ICS stock to another ROM from Xda forum>>
I find stock ICS from att =has several things lacking and a MAJOR DISSPOINTMENT
>> thanks in adnace > love your mods and work !
