Hi Guys,
First post here.
I've started installing VillainRom 1.4 following the instructions contained in the official thread in the Dev Forum.
However, having selected to flash the zip file in CWM and watched the installation process start, my screen has now been displaying the blinking VillainRom logo for about 45 minutes. Is this normal or has something gone wrong?!
I plugged the phone into the mains right after the logo first showed up. Would this have made a difference?
Many thanks in advance.
If your coming from a stock ROM you need to perform a full wipe in CWM before flashing.
Look through the options in recovery, wipe your data then reflash the ROM for good measure.
All should be fine....
OK, great, thanks.
So should I just turn it off, boot in recovery and look for the wipe option, wipe the phone, then restart the installation process?
Yep, boot into recovery then select;
"Wipe Data/Factory Reset"
"Wipe Cache Partition"
"Advanced>Wipe Dalvik Cache"
Then flash the rom again.(This step may not be required, but it cant hurt).
Fantastic, thanks for your help. Very much appreciated!
One further question.
I've got VillainRom successfully installed now, but when I attempt to restore the apps and data that I backed up using Titanium Backup my phone reverts to it's pre-Villain state.
Is there anyway to restore my data but keep VillainRom? Am I being completely dense?!
Thanks

That sounds strange. Titanium backup in itself cannot "revert" you to the previous ROM. That's not possible
What do you mean by its pre-villain state by the way?
When I move between different editions of the ROM, I do a titanium backup via the app. I then reinstall the ROM, and select some apps to restore. I am still running the same ROM (confirm via Menu > settings > about, and scroll to the bottom. It should show as VillainROM 1.4.0.
Thanks for your reply.
By pre-villain state I mean the stock firmware that came with the phone. I looked at the settings and it put me back onto the original firmware.
This was also confirmed because after installing VillainRom, restoring and then installing VillainTweaks, VTweaks told me it couldn't function because VillainRom wasn't installed.
From your reply I think the mistake I might have made was to restore from CWM rather than re-downloading Titanium Backup and restoring through that. Would that be correct?

ok guys, here we are again.. you're wanting to backup your phone for if you want to try a test rom, or just to have a backup in case something goes wrong. this tut will show you how! I will also explain how to restore your phone to a backup you've previously made. it is also possible to backup/restore using rom manager but this is the harder way.. not too hard once you figure it out, but thats all opinion
Pre Requirements:
1.) be rooted
2.) have clockwork recovery installed
3.) not a necessity, but it DEFINITELY helps to have the engineering build installed at least once
BACKUP STEPS:
1.) boot into clockwork recovery mode
2.) scroll down to nandroid and select
3.) click backup
4.) it will now automatically backup your ENTIRE PHONE.. this includes your contacts, messages, emails, everything you have on the phone prior to booting into recovery. you will see a yellow bar at the bottom that shows progress
5.) REBOOT!
6.) there is no step 6... you're done
RESTORE STEPS:
1.)boot into clockwork recovery mode
2.) scroll down to nandroid and select
3.) scroll down to restore and select
4.) scroll to your desired restore nandroid and select
5.) scroll to yes and select
6.) it will now auto restore your backup and everything in it. when done it will tell you DONE!
7.) reboot and you're done!
well there ya go guys, one (two?) more tut(s) done and have fun be safe and remember to wipe if you're ever scared you have a boot loop
I actually do have a specific question about these nandroid backups. If I backup, then flash a "updated" ROM (update to an existing one already installed), and THEN do a restore, does the restore take me back to the previous version of the ROM? I've never used the nandroid backups as I usually never have a need to.
the restore takes your phone back to exactly how it was when you performed the backup
Gotcha, so if you backup, wipe, and then update a ROM, you cannot expect to be able to use your nandroid backup to restore anything you had previously, unless you wanted to go back to the ROMs previous version... gotcha.
where are these backups stored?
I think it's /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/[BackupDate]/
is it safe to remove them from the sdcard & store for safekeeping until needed & replace in same location?
yep, sure is!
Is it necessary to perform a wipe before restoring, if you currently have a different ROM than what is being restored? Or does nandroid wipe for you?

no, nandroid doesnt wipe for you. i suggest always wiping if you're changing roms
hi im kinda new to this, but I rooted my slide using the tuts from droiddog.com and here. Got mostly everything working but when I try to backup my current rom clockwork crashes and it doesn't take me to recovery and just reboots the phone. Ive tried clearing the download cashe and downloading an older recovery but nothing seems to work. I basically cant boot into recovery to make backups or flash any roms. any suggestions on what else I could try.
I gave this explination of a nandroid to a friend of mine today. It will act like a time machine and put your device back exactly as it was when you did the backup. Now if you need an explination like that, you realy should not be messing with your phone that way.
freeze
hi
i have a problem. when i try to restore my backup. everything looks fine. but when restoring finish and reboot my phone screen is freezing on htc logo. what can i do?
sorry for my bad english!
Just wait it takes a while to boot sometimes, treat it like you would treat a new ROM being flashed.
i need to wipe data/factory reset or?
ok
i wipe data.. restore backup from nandroid.. reboot phone and i waiting almost 30 min and screen still show only htc logo..
I have copied the nandroid backups on my SD card
but in recovery mode, it is not showing any nandroid backup file ?

Hello,
I have a question about Nandroid backups using CWM...I read on some forum that...the backup and the installed version of CWM recovery should match to make it work..I.e If I took the backup using CWM version 5.0.0.0 I have to use the same CWM recovery version to restore the ROM and I can not restore nandroid backup using the later version lets say 5.0.1.5 of CWM...is it true?
Thanks..
I kinda doubt that. Itd be much more likely that a nandroid created by 5.0 couldnt be used by an earlier version. I doubt that is true either, just more likely than the other way around.
Nothing wrong with waiting for better confirmation than mine, but if it were an issue I think wed have heard a lot more about it by now.

Hey guys,
i know how much answering the same questions can be tedious. It irks me too sometimes. I read through 30 pages of the cyanogenMod thread and im still left with questions. I went through the Wiki, Youtube, everywhere that i could learn more and im still lost. I think its partly because everybody that takes apart in the discussion seems to already have android knowledge. I came from a iphone so all this tinkering is VERY new to me.
Looking at the cyanogenmod wiki page, it showed me how to install rom step by step. surprisingly, it looks easy. but as i was looking through the thread, the word "nandroid" popped out MULTIPLE times. i went back to the wiki and read it over but no where does it say anything about nandroid. so i googled it, and its a back up program.
my question is, is nandroid required? if so (get ready for the onslaught of questions) where could i get step by step directions on how to use nandroid. im also trying to figure out how to restore from nandroid.
this scenario popped up, im using CM6 and i want to restore to the stock rom. what would be the steps i would take to get to stock? something with nandroid? or just download the stock rom and put it on my sd and boot from there?
another thing that puzzles me is, what would the process be in updating the CM6 roms with the incremental updates that are released every few weeks.
i thought CM6 was hard to follow so i went to the liberated thread. but than these directions
"Do a nandroid backup to preserve your current rom
Wipe Data (if coming from another rom, including CM6 or liberated_aria non-deodexed version, or to enable additional languages from previous version)
Wipe Cache
Wipe dalvik cache (advanced > wipe dalvik cache)
Install liberated_aria_R00*_signed.zip from sdcard"
left me more puzzled. wipe data as in do the factory restore from settings? how would i wipe the cache and delvik cache? what is the diff between the regular and deodexed version?
this is just giving me a headache. the necessary info seems to be everywhere and not in one place. URGHFDhSFlsdlfgjndlkngkdfs. maybe i should go back to the iphone.
thanks to anybody who actually reads this essay lol.

Lol...we all gotta start somewhere anyway, number one: nandroid is part of clockwork recoverymod...I don't remember back to when I rooted BUT I do know that following the process of rooting my phone, afterwards I had clockwork recovery installed. This is accessed by powering down your phone and while booting up you press power and hold volume down. Once in there you use volume up/down to navigate options and power to select. Um lets see here, as for updating. You would simply download the zip place it on root directory of your SD card, boot into clockwork, wipe cache and then flash the zip.
The wipe cache, dalvik, etc is all done through clockwork. General rule of thumb is to do a nandroid backup before you flash anything. That way if anything goes wrong, you can restore your backup.
Is nandroid required? Um...hard to answer that question. I believe clockwork recovery mod IS required and since nandroid is part of clockwork, then yea lol...
If I missed anything let me know because I'm on my phone so its a little difficult to keep scrolling up to scroll back down to type what I need to type.
Also, if I was wrong on anything, please someone point it out so we (i) don't mislead him.

nandroid is something that you can utilize to make nandroid backups if you have Clockworkmod recovery for the Aria. Do you have to use it? No. Do you have to have it? Yes, if you have Clockworkmod recovery installed.
How is Clockworkmod recovery installed? It is automatically installed and replaces your stock recovery when you root your phone using the latest versions of the Unrevoked tool.
In order to use nandroid for backup you:
1. Reboot into Clockworkmod recovery (either through an application like ROM Manager, the option presented during power off in Cyanogenmod 6, or by turning the phone completely off and then holding the volume down button during power on). DO NOT enter Clockworkmod recovery by powering off the phone with the micro USB cable attached to a power source (it won't work reliably in this manner).
2. Go to "nandroid"
3. Click "Backup"
The backup takes a few hundred megabytes (mine are about 200-350 MB each) on your SD card so make sure you have available space.
In order to use nandroid for recovery you:
1. Reboot into Clockworkmod recovery as listed above.
2. Go to "nandroid"
3. Click "Restore"
4. Select the backup you want to recover from.
5. Select "Yes - Restore"

By stock I mean everything on your phone is exactly as it is when you first purchased it, no root or Clockworkmod recovery.
To get back to stock you don't use nandroid. If you think about it, nandroid backups came after you have Clockworkmod recovery installed, which came with rooting your phone. Therefore, your first backup would not be stock, but rather from your rooted phone.
To get to back to stock you would follow the instructions here

All of the quoted steps are performed in Clockworkmod recovery.
nandroid backups are as explained above.
"wipe data/factory reset" is an option under Clockworkmod recovery and I only do so under the conditions you quoted.
Wipe cache refers to "wipe cache partition" option under Clockworkmod recovery.
Wipe dalvik cache is done in Clockworkmod recovery by:
1. Selecting "Advanced"
2. Clicking "Wipe Dalvik Cache"
Once you have CM6 or Liberated installed, performing incremental updates can be done by:
1. Putting the ROM update onto the SD card.
2. Rebooting into Clockworkmod recovery
3. (Optional step) Performing a nandroid backup
4. Selecting "install zip from sdcard"
5. Selecting "choose zip from sdcard" and selecting wherever you put the ROM update on your SD card.
Hopefully that all made sense and was helpful.
i first to say thanks for the replies. i assumed that i would get backlash for asking such stupid questions but boy was i wrong. i really appreciate it guys
so when would a person use nandroid? so lets say you make a nandroid back up right after you unroot it, than you load up CM6 or liberated. do you use the nandroid back up when you want to go back to the time where it was just rooted? Want to make sure this is the process if i ever get tired of those roms.
and its as simple as doing the power down..etc etc method?

Yup Nandroid is basically an exact image of your phone at the time you perform the backup. When you restore it your phone goes back to the exact state it was in when you made the backup...apps, rom, everything. So you would want to do a backup any time you want to try a new rom or make a change to your current rom.
And to restore you simply boot the phone into recovery and choose restore (from the same menu you make your backup from). You can also have more than one backup at a time, though it takes up a bit of space on the SD card. I keep one backup on my SD and just keep any others I want on my computer.
nandroid
Is only one back up kept on the phone? As in the most recent, or will I have a copy for everytime I do a nandroid back up. I noticed that when I did a restore I did not have an option to choose a restore.
You can have as many as you can fit on your SD card. It should bring up a list when you click Restore.
I completely bricked my phone. i was rolling on fr008 and it was working fine. i nandroid packuped, then tried cyanogenmods 6.1.1... it's now bricked and whenever i do a nandroid backup it stays on the loading screen... help anyone?
Can you get into clockwork mod? If so, do a data wipe/factory reset, then clear cache, then on advanced menu clear dalvik cache. Then reinstall latest FR008ddx

So I am assuming you are able to get into recovery? If so please try to get into the advanced menu and do a "wipe dalvik cache". Next, backup 1 menu and wipe your cache partition and user data, then try and boot your phone. When switching from the FR series to CM or vice versa you need to wipe dalvik and regular cache plus user data. Also when you try and flash roms make sure your phone is not plugged in, clockwork recovery does not work the same when your phone is plugged in. If you flashed CM while your phone was plugged in then you need to attempt to flash again with your phone unplugged.
Thanks guys, that really helped, ill try it know

Forget the nandroid backup its corrupt
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App
What do you mean it's factory reset? If you restored your phone back to stock I don't believe you can use nandroid. You should be in clockwork recovery to use nandroid. The factory reset/data wipe from recovery does not bother nandroid in any way that I am aware of. Are you trying to restore a nandroid backup?
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
Eh, oh well, thanks for the help guys, ill start moving everything back....
Dont use clockwork recovery when plugged into your computer, thats the only conclusion i can come up with for why your nanodroid backup is corrupt...
Signatures are fancy.
Yeah... make sure you're unplugged while you're doing this and be sure to wipe the cache as mentioned above. You can then put a rom on your SD and flash again, then go back and flash your favorite rom or go back to factory.
cant stress it enough, read the install instructions and ALWAYS wipe before flashing(or is that flushing? j/k)
anyway, you should be able to Nandroid Restore. and the previous posters were right, the only way to enter recovery properly is with the phone unplugged, then power on holding the volume down key, select recovery and Bingo!!
let us know how you made out
Thanks guys, got everything up and running again, and thanks for the instructions

Yesterday, I installed Andyx ICS rom through CWM (followed proper procedure i.e. 4 wipes). Install was successful, however, I was having some force closes. I decided to revert back to gingerbread and did 4 wipes again and installed CheckROM v4 (all through CWM). It was successful as well. This was lastly followed by restoring my nandroid backup to get back to my rooted-stock ROM.
Two strange observations:
1- When ICS was installed, it had the same background (personal picture) as it was in my stock rom. Why is that? After doing 4 wipes, it shouldn't have anything except everything vanilla :S
2- When I reverted back to GB (CheckROM) from ICS, during first boot, it came up with passkey lock screen. I had to enter the same passkey as I used to enter in my orignal stock rom (pre-ICS). How can this setting be stored when I wiped everything and changed two different ROMS (with different kernels).
Any help would be much appreciated. I just want to know what exactly might have been the cause of this. Or is it normal? :S
Wrong section - this is a question.
My 2 cents, you didn't wipe data.
Usually this will happen if you select the backup and restore options during setup of your phone. Some application, security and system settings are backed up and then restored when you install the new ROM, even after a full wipe. When I upgraded to ICS, I deselected the restore option as I wanted a fresh install.
I did following wipes in CWM recovery (1 time each before installing ICS. And three times each before going from ICS to CheckROM v4)
* Wipe data /factory reset
* Wipe cache
* Wipe Dalvik cache
* Wipe battery stats
As for the right section, my apologies..Mods feel free to move this thread to the Q/A section.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, not sure if I understood you correctly. Where do we get that option? I made nandroid couple of weeks ago. And flashed ICS zip through CWM after wipe...didn't see any option to select or deselect.
I installed a wipe version of ICS and during the initial setup of the phone, I simply left all the options selected. This resulted in my wallpaper, settings and apps being restored, which I didn't want. I then reflashed the ROM and deselected the restore option and voila.... all ICS defaults

A nandroid backup is a full backup no matter how many wipes you do in the end you restored your nandroid backup this means that the phone is restored to the state it was when you made the backup.

What you can do is boot into CWMR and then go to the "backup and restore" section, then select the "advanced restore" option. After you have selected the "advanced restore" option, select the backup you made before you flashed Slimbean ROM, then it will ask you which partition you want to restore select "Restore data" it will now restore your data from before you flashed Slimbean ROM to the current ROM you have installed while still keeping the ROM you have installed on your device. After the data finished restoring go back to the CWMR main menu and select "reboot system now", the device will now reboot and you should be all set with your restored data while still keeping the ROM you have installed.

Flash stock ROM and backup stuff on SD card using nandroid. Flash custom ROM and boot into recovery. Select NANdroid > Advanced Restore.

After you restore data in recovery make sure to wipe the cache partition and dalvik cache as well as this is likely what's causing you to bootloop.
