Hi people
This is my first time posting here, Im sure this question was asked quite a few times, but i couldnt find any relevant posts in the foum.
So I backed up my phone using CWM before flashing Slimbean ROM, Now I'm done flashing and want to get back y data including contacts sms photos etc. Is there anyway to do so using CWM? everytime i try restoring it restores back to the stock ROM. is there anyway to just restore the data on my phone and not the Stock ROM?
thx for the help

What you can do is boot into CWMR and then go to the "backup and restore" section, then select the "advanced restore" option. After you have selected the "advanced restore" option, select the backup you made before you flashed Slimbean ROM, then it will ask you which partition you want to restore select "Restore data" it will now restore your data from before you flashed Slimbean ROM to the current ROM you have installed while still keeping the ROM you have installed on your device. After the data finished restoring go back to the CWMR main menu and select "reboot system now", the device will now reboot and you should be all set with your restored data while still keeping the ROM you have installed.

Flash stock ROM and backup stuff on SD card using nandroid. Flash custom ROM and boot into recovery. Select NANdroid > Advanced Restore.

After you restore data in recovery make sure to wipe the cache partition and dalvik cache as well as this is likely what's causing you to bootloop.

ok guys, here we are again.. you're wanting to backup your phone for if you want to try a test rom, or just to have a backup in case something goes wrong. this tut will show you how! I will also explain how to restore your phone to a backup you've previously made. it is also possible to backup/restore using rom manager but this is the harder way.. not too hard once you figure it out, but thats all opinion
Pre Requirements:
1.) be rooted
2.) have clockwork recovery installed
3.) not a necessity, but it DEFINITELY helps to have the engineering build installed at least once
BACKUP STEPS:
1.) boot into clockwork recovery mode
2.) scroll down to nandroid and select
3.) click backup
4.) it will now automatically backup your ENTIRE PHONE.. this includes your contacts, messages, emails, everything you have on the phone prior to booting into recovery. you will see a yellow bar at the bottom that shows progress
5.) REBOOT!
6.) there is no step 6... you're done
RESTORE STEPS:
1.)boot into clockwork recovery mode
2.) scroll down to nandroid and select
3.) scroll down to restore and select
4.) scroll to your desired restore nandroid and select
5.) scroll to yes and select
6.) it will now auto restore your backup and everything in it. when done it will tell you DONE!
7.) reboot and you're done!
well there ya go guys, one (two?) more tut(s) done and have fun be safe and remember to wipe if you're ever scared you have a boot loop
I actually do have a specific question about these nandroid backups. If I backup, then flash a "updated" ROM (update to an existing one already installed), and THEN do a restore, does the restore take me back to the previous version of the ROM? I've never used the nandroid backups as I usually never have a need to.
the restore takes your phone back to exactly how it was when you performed the backup
Gotcha, so if you backup, wipe, and then update a ROM, you cannot expect to be able to use your nandroid backup to restore anything you had previously, unless you wanted to go back to the ROMs previous version... gotcha.
where are these backups stored?
I think it's /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/[BackupDate]/
is it safe to remove them from the sdcard & store for safekeeping until needed & replace in same location?
yep, sure is!
Is it necessary to perform a wipe before restoring, if you currently have a different ROM than what is being restored? Or does nandroid wipe for you?

no, nandroid doesnt wipe for you. i suggest always wiping if you're changing roms
hi im kinda new to this, but I rooted my slide using the tuts from droiddog.com and here. Got mostly everything working but when I try to backup my current rom clockwork crashes and it doesn't take me to recovery and just reboots the phone. Ive tried clearing the download cashe and downloading an older recovery but nothing seems to work. I basically cant boot into recovery to make backups or flash any roms. any suggestions on what else I could try.
I gave this explination of a nandroid to a friend of mine today. It will act like a time machine and put your device back exactly as it was when you did the backup. Now if you need an explination like that, you realy should not be messing with your phone that way.

hi
i have a problem. when i try to restore my backup. everything looks fine. but when restoring finish and reboot my phone screen is freezing on htc logo. what can i do?
sorry for my bad english!
Just wait it takes a while to boot sometimes, treat it like you would treat a new ROM being flashed.
i need to wipe data/factory reset or?
ok
i wipe data.. restore backup from nandroid.. reboot phone and i waiting almost 30 min and screen still show only htc logo..
I have copied the nandroid backups on my SD card
but in recovery mode, it is not showing any nandroid backup file ?

Hello,
I have a question about Nandroid backups using CWM...I read on some forum that...the backup and the installed version of CWM recovery should match to make it work..I.e If I took the backup using CWM version 5.0.0.0 I have to use the same CWM recovery version to restore the ROM and I can not restore nandroid backup using the later version lets say 5.0.1.5 of CWM...is it true?
Thanks..
I kinda doubt that. Itd be much more likely that a nandroid created by 5.0 couldnt be used by an earlier version. I doubt that is true either, just more likely than the other way around.
Nothing wrong with waiting for better confirmation than mine, but if it were an issue I think wed have heard a lot more about it by now.

Hi Guys,
First post here.
I've started installing VillainRom 1.4 following the instructions contained in the official thread in the Dev Forum.
However, having selected to flash the zip file in CWM and watched the installation process start, my screen has now been displaying the blinking VillainRom logo for about 45 minutes. Is this normal or has something gone wrong?!
I plugged the phone into the mains right after the logo first showed up. Would this have made a difference?
Many thanks in advance.
If your coming from a stock ROM you need to perform a full wipe in CWM before flashing.
Look through the options in recovery, wipe your data then reflash the ROM for good measure.
All should be fine....
OK, great, thanks.
So should I just turn it off, boot in recovery and look for the wipe option, wipe the phone, then restart the installation process?
Yep, boot into recovery then select;
"Wipe Data/Factory Reset"
"Wipe Cache Partition"
"Advanced>Wipe Dalvik Cache"
Then flash the rom again.(This step may not be required, but it cant hurt).
Fantastic, thanks for your help. Very much appreciated!
One further question.
I've got VillainRom successfully installed now, but when I attempt to restore the apps and data that I backed up using Titanium Backup my phone reverts to it's pre-Villain state.
Is there anyway to restore my data but keep VillainRom? Am I being completely dense?!
Thanks

That sounds strange. Titanium backup in itself cannot "revert" you to the previous ROM. That's not possible
What do you mean by its pre-villain state by the way?
When I move between different editions of the ROM, I do a titanium backup via the app. I then reinstall the ROM, and select some apps to restore. I am still running the same ROM (confirm via Menu > settings > about, and scroll to the bottom. It should show as VillainROM 1.4.0.
Thanks for your reply.
By pre-villain state I mean the stock firmware that came with the phone. I looked at the settings and it put me back onto the original firmware.
This was also confirmed because after installing VillainRom, restoring and then installing VillainTweaks, VTweaks told me it couldn't function because VillainRom wasn't installed.
From your reply I think the mistake I might have made was to restore from CWM rather than re-downloading Titanium Backup and restoring through that. Would that be correct?
Hi,

The only option you have is to boot back into recovery and restore your last backup. If recovery is unavailable you'll have to use flashtool to flash a complete firmware package, root, install XRecovery and then restore your backup. If it's a 2.3 backup make sure that you're running baseband .71.

If you can get into recovery try this..... Do a backup first and then do a reinstall your current ROM. After you've done that do an advanced restore of your data and cache partitions from the backup you just made.
This should get you back to your ROM's basic system partition with your current data and cache. If everything works OK, you shouldn't even see any differences.

By "reinstall your current ROM", you mean reinstalling the stock SEUS ROM right?
I just made a backup inside recovery, I will go ahead and reinstall my phone now.
When I restore, are the texts, phonebook etc... being restored from recovery's backup? =) or will i lose those?~

I mean whatever rom you were using when you installed that zip that caused the problem. It actually should still be on your SD card as a Zip unless you removed it after you flashed it.
When you restore data you'll get everything back apps, texts, contacts, history etc.....

Hello All
Spent the last few weeks looking at custom roms for the Galaxy SII and hope to install one soon.
My phone is already rooted and I use Titanium backup pro to do a backup of all my app and system data.
Once my new rom is installed I would like to restore my phone back to a state where it has my apps and information e.g. text messages, whats app contacts etc I already use backup to gmail and sync my contacts with my google account so not too worried about this.
Any suggestions on things I should backup before I install. Is it possible to install a custom rom and preserve the data?? I doubt not but thought I would ask.
I installed a custom rom when I had a HTC Desire and that was pretty much straightforward. Seems ever easier on the SII but are there any gotchas I should be aware of?
Thanks
Shouldn't be in the development forum - reported to mods so they can move to correct place.
Whoops sorry!
Should it be in the general forum?
Yes, it should be in the general forum as this is for development only...
Doesn't mean I can't answer your question anyway!
Installing a custom ROM whilst keeping you current System's "state" is possible in theory. I absolutely don't recommend it, though.
In custom ROMs, there's often a lot of changes compared to an original ROM. That means you CAN use Titanium Backup, etc., but then errors and FCs might happen. Even when installing a new custom ROM over another, it's ALWAYS better to wipe everything and re- download your Apps from the market (If you have the option ticked, your device will even reinstall all apps automatically after you logged in with your Gmail-Account... )
So, in a nutshell, I'd highly recommend not to restore old saved settings, Apps, or anything else.
I use to backup apps /w data with titanium backup and sms with a sms backup app. I has worked fin every time. I do not recommend to backup settings though.

Moving to Q&A
If your phone is rooted and you have cwm recovery, I would suggest you boot into recovery and backup that way. At least if you aren't happy with the custom rom you can restore the backup and your phone will be exactly like it was before.
BTW, I've rarely had problems restoring user apps and data on new roms via titanium. Generally system apps etc give you errors.
For contacts I backup to SD card, and for SMS, apns, bookmarks and call logs I use market apps.
Also, I would suggest a no-wipe custom rom because most data is preserved anyway. They generally recommend wiping this or that first but I never do and havent had many problems in the past.

I have tried to backup using the Nandroid backup. I have ROM manager installed and if I try to reboot into recovery or create a backup it doesnt successfully work.
It comes up with an error when in recovery which says
'failed to verify whole-file signature'
signature verification failed.
Please help.
I have made sure that my rom manager is up to date and have installed CWM
Thanks
Don't use rom manager. Reboot into recovery manually using the 3 button method : volume up + power + home.
If you don't see backup there you don't have cwm recovery (I suspect you don't). I would recommend then to flash cf-root via Odin to get it.
Edit: rom manager on its own will not give you cwm as it can't flash it on a stock kernal. You need a custom kernal with the required recovery - 2e I think. So flash cf-root.

Am sorry if am posting this question in the wrong area but i cant post anything in the development section yet
I am trying to flash a new ROM (checkROM rev HD3.1.1) and I am currently using a custom ROM (CM7.1). In CWM 5.0.2.7 I see a lot of wipe options and don't really know which one i should do. Correct me if am wrong please, but i should do 'wipe data/factory reset' and 'wipe cache partition' from the main menu, and 'wipe dalvik cache' 'wipe battery stats' from the 'advanced menu'?
what about all the format (ie, format data/ format cache/ etc.) option in 'mounts and storage' menu, is this for an external sd-card?
thanks alot

Thanks for that. Any instructions on how I would go about doing this flash cf-root. I dont really get that if I be honest.
All I can tell you is recently I upgraded to 2.3.5 via kies for my galaxy S 2. I then had to re-root the phonea and now I am runnin the following:
Android version - 2.3.5
Baseband version - I9100XXKI4
Kernel version - 2.6.35.7-i9100XWKDD-CL161513
build number - gingerbread.XWKJ1
When I looked at all the different flash cf-root options I didnt know which one was the one I should use for my phone. The process within Odin I'm fine with...

Hello guys,
My question is what the usefull solution for backup and restore the rom? CWM backup / restore seems not really working well. Xda and custom rom's dev always remind to make a backup, but when u face a problem after flashing rom, you cannot access CWM if you got bootloop, then how to restore? And if you dont like the custom rom that you just flashed for some reason, you might want to restore back to your 'fav' rom.. but unfortunately it's not work as you thought. Sometimes restore failed. Im looking the solution for this..
-restore / backup anywhere without using pc.
-not reflash the rom, this will need to customize it again.. Hassle.
-any android app or android system ability to handle this. If CWM can handle this, then tell me how to restore when u got bootloop and cannot access the recovery mod.
-if there's any other app or method, please suggest them to me.
Any help or idea will be appreciated. Thanks.

When ever Ive made a backup Ive always booted to recovery,"backup and restore" and then "backup".That gives me a full Nandroid backup. As far as the bootloop goes Ive never had a problem to boot to recovery with the 3 button combo. If the 3 button combo works, and its never failed for me then select "backup and restore","restore".Ive also read that reflashing your kernel can solve the problem.I know a simple factory reset can,but not always.
nandroid backup is the best
You can always restore the rom when you can access the recovery mod. If you are a flasholic, you cant escape from bootloop and no recovery mod. My odin binary counter now up to 539.. Nandroid backup sometimes got problem.. Let say i made a backup a checkrom, the i flashed miui, suddenly miui got problem, and i get into recoverymod to restore back my checkrom.. When u done restoring, you will be in checkrom but this time its got many problems. Flashing compatible kernel will not solve the problem. The only solution fot me is to reflash it again.
Im not looking for this way, reflash the rom is hassle, sometimes u got bootloop and cant access recovery, then u need to get back home to use computer with odin to flash only kernel.
What else backup method other than nandroid backup.

Normally when I flash a ROM over top of another and I know, from other threads, that they are not compatable in terms of insalation and basic use(FCs)then I always do a full wipe (format system/data/cache,battery stats and fact. reset) prior to instalation. With Titanium it only takes a few minutes to reinstall my apps and during instalation there is no conflicting data between the old and new ROM which would cause a major failer to occur.Thats why if something happens the 3 button combo always works cos nothing major has happened.A factory reset and Im done, althought very rare and the nandroid backup is still in the SD if needed. The problem is when there is to many ROMs cluttering the devices system.Ive read that flashing over top of CM7,Lightning and Miui can sometimes be problamatic.

Ahaaa! Your description attract me, i think you're right, base on the way you explained about full wipe does make sense to me. The real interpretation of 'full wipe' is including formatting the system?
Maybe I'm doing it wrong here, flashing another rom on top of another. What usually i did is 'full wipe'... This is my step :
1 - clear data/factory reset
2 - clear cache
3 - advance > clear dalvik cache
4 - flash new rom
This is what i did, i didn't format anything as you mentioned above. Is your full wipe method lead to 'fresh install'? Well buddy, could you please note down your full wipe method step by step including format the system? Which step should i do 1st and what step next? Could you?
Thanks, highly appreciated.

Cool. The thing is not all ROMs are compatablie and therefore can cause problems between each other.Your phone holds data from the previous ROM and also your battery collects info and data from each ROM.All this data and info if not cleaned up (and if from various non-compatablie ROMs) will most likely always result in problems.A full wipe, that I will write below is like installing your ROM on a completely clean devive.First of all a nandroid and titanium backup which i explained ealier,I think?
1.Pass the new ROM to internal-SD
2.boot to recovery and wipe cache partition, dalvik cache, battery stats(go back)
3.select "mounts and storage"
4.format cache, system and data (go back)
5.now wipe data/factory reset and your phone is now completely clean
6.now just install your ROM from the internal-SD as normal and I also do another factory reset to avoid possible bootloops and reboot device but if you get one pull the battery or use the 3 button combo to do one.
this full wipe will clean up all system data but will not touch your SD card so your titanium and nandroid backups will not be touched if you should choose to use them.Once I reinstall all my apps again with titanium its a good idea to reboot to recovery and wipe cache partition and dalvik cache then reboot phone. This will help avoid market connetion problems.
