WiMax Radio Improvement - HTC EVO 3D

For those who have the 3vo, do u notice an improvement in the wimax radio vs the OG evo?

NONE!!! Actually I am seeing a minor performance drop, cant top over 4MBS vs the EVO 4G at 5MBS.. whats even more weird is that when I test a Clear 4G Modem (same Service as sprint) next to the phone I get 6-7MBS so I am wondering if there might be some WIMAX limitaions placed on the EVOs...
CINR/RSSI is the same for all 3 units.

My 3vo (I still have hesitations in calling it that, but I digress.) can get 4G about 2 inches farther away from my office window (I mean literally 2 inches). I've tested 4G in my office many times and have marked the exact spot that 4G kicks in, so I know. Yes, I am a geek...

Yeah I've noticed a slight drop also.

My 4G doubled from the Evo to the 3D. May have been a coincidence with a upgrade in equipment but it it much better now.

There is definitely a drop in performance comparing to the og evo. I was with a friend outside and her og evo was at full strength and my 3d evo was at one bar. When we tried pulling up the same websites, hers was noticeably faster loading.

A little bit.
This thing will be smoking fast as soon as i get cyanogen on it.

Hi, I founfd this on the Dev Forum. Read post 1 and 2 it really works... I did it and now in my room I have great signal.

4G signal building penetration much better

One major perk I've noticed this phone vs the original EVO -- I have noticed an incredible improvement in the 4G radio penetrating buildings.
I work on a large corporate campus that was build back pre-WWII. The buildings all have thick concrete walls, and I was *NEVER* able to get a sliver of a connection on 4G with the original EVO. 3G was spotty.
On the EVO 3D, I'm experiencing an instant connection to 4G. Speeds are very respectable, ~9000kbps down/1500kbps up. Is it possible they recently implemented tower upgrades? Maybe. I'm thinking it is the phone though. Anybody else notice 4G range and penetration improvements?
Did u apply the ota? I haven't yet and my signal is worse with both 3g and 4G but I'm waiting to do the ota until the problems are fixed
Yeah I applied the OTA. Did not test it prior to the update.
I'm hoping there was a radio update in that cuz I Might have a bad 3vo
I think it is much better, too. I got nothing with my 4G yesterday but in the same location is got a good signal and great speeds and this is in a hospital, too. Yes I applied the OTA.

The 4G signal is definitely better than the Evo 4G. I was able to pull a Fair signal with the 3D vs Poor to no signal in my house on the Evo 4G. I did not take the OTA.
I think i have a bad 3vo...even after the update my signal is consistently worse than my EVO 4G on both 3g and 4G
odd. i did not apply the ota, and do not have nearly as good of signal as the evo had. i'm now considering the ota..
Ok I found something that concerns me. I had my phone sitting in a chair and it had a signal of -81dbm and when I picked it up it changed to -93dbm
That's normal...

My EVO 4G held -86dbm constantly when I held it in this spot of my house
The 3D has WAYYY better radio performance and speeds vs the OG Evo.

I used to get ~5mb down / 1up on the evo..
the evo 3d gets 8mb down / 1.4up (from my house)

your body works like an antenna
Great news guys, I was disappointed when I heard it had the same 4g chip as the evo, but i guess htc did some antenna work.

The radio inside the phone has nothing to do with how well the WiMax signal penetrates buildings, walls, etc. HTC used the same WiMax chip as the original Evo. They might have placed it in a better location in the phone or have updated the radio firmware so it might be able to find and hold on to a weaker signal, but that's it.
I guess if 3G speeds somehow slightly improved after TeamWin got WiMax working for AOSP (separate radio), than anything's possible.
Anyone else have any 4g speeds or signal/performance comments? I know 4g here in chicago really sucks with my OG evo, 3mbps down is usually about it

Sprint compared to at&t

So was at the mall yesterday with a friend, she has an inspire on at&t i went to download a new game on my phone from the market the game was 20mb i was downloading it for like 20 mins and she downloaded it in like 2mins i was like wtf... Why is the sprint network so so slow? I was doing speed tests with almost full signal and was getting like 70kb
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
At&t has the fastest network, but they charge crazy amounts for overages.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Coverage differ eveywhere, speed is affect by tower load and backhaul, more users per tower, slower you get, so probably the sprint tower was serving more customer than ATT?
ATT 3G (which is also their psuedo 4G) is faster than sprint's 3G base on the technology, HSDPA vs CMDA/EVDO
i bet you weren't using the 4G right? if you can get a decent 4G signal then the speed should be comparable, but being inside a mall, unless the mall is right next to the tower.... hard to get a decent signal

VZW 4G is fastest, even faster than ATT HSDPA
I thought I saw Verizon scoring the highest.. but you maybe right.
I wasnt on 4g just 3g, me and her both were outside the mall when downloading, so ur saying her 3g is actually 4g?
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
From what I understand ATT has the fastest speed if and when you can get a slot on the tower--they are much better at this part than they were a year ago.
Verizon has middle of the road speed and expansive coverage.
Sprint has decent enough coverage and good roaming agreements, not over-saturated towers and WAS considerably faster than Verizon--until the EVO4G came out last year. I could actually notice my speeds dropping from day to day. They bottomed out 4 or 5 months ago and are stuck where they are...
Keep in mind this also changes based on time of day and population density and your data speed will be proportionate to your signal strength for the most part. If your buddy with ATT had full bars and you had almost none it doesn't matter whose phone or network is the fastest. Though I hear CDMA and GSM handle this differently I'm not so sure about that.
Even though with only 1/4 bar on my NS4G I get 1.5mbps in my apartment...the E3D went back primarily cuz its radios sucked for stability and performance. Hell, on my E4G I traded in yesterday I got 2.1mbps with 3/6 bars. The E3D couldn't touch that.

You likely weren't even on 3g, probably down to 1x, stock software wont show the difference though. Sprint's network blows in most places but I have faith that it'll get better.
I say stick with Sprint, they are adopting new technologies quicker than verizon and at&t. But speaking of 3g speed, at&t has the fastest but spotty coverage, then comes verizon with fast speed, excellent coverage, and t-mobile and sprint tied for third with ok speed and coverage. But I hear t-mobile's 3g speeds have been getting better with their introduction of 4g.
All in all, hopefully by 2012, sprint's standard 3g speeds will be better

for NOW, what AT&T call is 4G is actually faster version of their 3G tech same as Tmobile, which is HSPA+, AT&T won't BEGIN roll out their actual 4G LTE network until LATE this year.
Notice 4G LTE is the Tech Verizon have ALREADY deployed.
Early test with the not yet congested VZW 4G LTE show ACTUAL speeds download AND UPLOAD upward of 20mbps
AT&T's HSPA+ is MAX 14mbps, most day to day use see speed between 3-10mbps.
Tmo's HSPA+ is MAX 42mbps, most day to day use see speed about 10mbps.
Sprint and VZW's 3G is EVDO, that MAX out in day to day use about 2mbps, VZW on average is faster than Sprint, maybe about 200kbps-300kbps difference.
Sprint's 4G is WiMax, fastest i've seen is about 12mbps, usually more like 3-6mbps. so to have a chance to catch your friend's AT&T's speed, you need to have 4G on.
drawback of 4G Wimax and LTE... current generation chips suck battery juice super quick, our EVO 3D can be drain in 3-5hours of 4G usage
Pro of 4G Wimax and LTE, alot more spectrum/frequency efficient on the carrier's side, they can have more capacity in the same spectrum. Note that this is a mostly a Pro for the carrier and mostly a NULL factor to end users.
vice versa a CON of ATT/Tmo HSPA+ 3G/Psuedo 4G... they need more spectrum/frequency to acheive same capacity as 4G Wimax/LTE
Just the point that the signal with my 3d really sucks where ever i go, i dont know if its a hardware issue or a software issue, i dont wanna be stuck with a phone that gets horrible signal all the time, so should i take it back or keep it and hoping an update fixes the radios?

I'm with ya man. I did both. If this gets fixed (and we get unlocked) I'll be back. But until then I'm rocking a NexusS4G with a crappy Samsung radio that is somehow more reliable than the 3D's radio--just sayin'.
It has everything to do with where you are. I am in Miami/South Miami/Coconut Grove, FL and Sprint dominates ATT and Verizon. The blackberry bold I have on Verizon from work is essentially worthless in a shocking amount of popular/urban places. The Droid X I had before the bb was equally as bad. It is so bad I have to shell out my own money for a sprint phone to get decent service.
I always figured Verizon had blanket coverage everywhere since they market it so well but their coverage where I am is really poor. Of course if you call them, they act shocked and reference their map that shows dense coverage.

Its sad that AT&T's 3.5G HSDPA is faster than Wimax. I have a company AT&T phone and it's way faster than my Evo.

Welcome to Sprint! I see you've already learned their motto..
I don't know what's up with this phones reception or data speeds. It Sux! I mean for phone reception, I get 2 less bars everywhere I go and for data I'm getting barley .5 mb when used to always get about .9 with og EVO.
Besides these issues the phone is top notch. I'm still have a couple of weeks to take it back, but I really don't want to. Hopefully these issues can be worked out soon.

I totally agree with you, if they dont fix the reception issues and data speeds im gonna have to take this thing back, not because i want to but im not gonna tolerate 1 bar at my house where i should be getting full and 50kb data speeds which is absolutely pathetic, they need to release an update to fix this issue right away, htc has really upset me with this phone

I had a bad signal too, changed the PRL in QPST to a USCellular (15110) and have great coverage ever since When I called Sprint for my MSL, I told the tech that I was planning on changing the PRL due to a bad signal, he said "that's a great idea"

anyone come to amaze from evo3d?

Just wondering if anyone has switched to the amaze from the evo3d. Tired of sprint where I live and am thinking about jumping to tmo. I dont know how hard the 3d will be to give up though, so if anyone has, do you miss it at all?
I just switched my service over and had the evo 3d on sprint. This phone is basically the same as the evo 3d so if you like the evo like I did you will also like the amaze. Sprint service has been terrible for a while so I made the switch and now I actually have service in the apartment. The network speed is also really fast compared to Sprint plus I am saving a lot. I couldn't get 1mbps on spring 3g and the wiimax is a joke. On t mobile I am getting nearly 10mbps even in my apartment.
I also had the 3d, I can tell you that this phone is a lot smoother and as for data speeds t Mobile smokes Sprint. Even on the rarities that I don't have full signal strength it is just rediculously faster than Sprint.

how much do you guys miss the 3d function? I dont use it alot but when I do I love it. Been trying to hold out for tmo to get a 3d handset, but I'm about over sprint at this point.
With the quality of the pics you get with the amaze you'll be glad you switched. I only used the 3d function for the first couple of days so I personally don't miss it. The quality of the amazes cam is pretty outstanding.
Sent from my HTC Amaze 4G using xda premium
The savings, faster data speeds and better coverage for me trumps 3D. I may used it once or twice but I am not big on taking pics with the phone. I prefer my dedicated camera.
I had the Evo 4g for ten months and jumped the ship to T-mobile. I didn't like the changes that Sprint was and wasn't doing. The stores got to the point were no employee could help me, I go to pay my bill and they couldn't look the info up but when Shentel ran the show they could. Also the fact that they have the smallest/slowest nonexpanding 4g market was just plain sad. Sorry ending rant, this phone and carrier are both amazing.

Am I the only one?

Am I the only one who has noticed poor 3G on this phone? Even poor for sprint standards. Especially at places where I normally get my best data I'm getting piss poor and even going into roaming. My desk at work is usually where I get my best speeds and now I can barely send a text message. I've only had the phone for a week but since I've got it 3G has been awful and even WiFi hasn't been spot on... I fails a lot dropping signal if my screen turns off for to long which sucks when I'm downloading a Rom or something of the sort, and before you ask I do have it set to keep WiFi on while the screen is off. I love the phone and would hate to get rid of it because I can't use it. So hopefully its not just me maybe sprint has something going in my area that started the moment I got my phone... I'm in Orlando, FL and I'm running stock with root

Call sprint, check for tower upgrades in your area.
Make sure your updating your prl and profile too
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Naw ur not the only one....with all the upgrades to both the 3g and 4g LTE my 3g has been hit and miss.....good some days and bad others....hopefully it'll all get corrected real some only saving grace for me right now is wi-fi
Underlying idea is, its not the phone... its the network.
Past experience doesn't guarantee present performance
MIne is working well.
Wifi is performing very good for me, and the other day at my apt around 6pm i got 1.9megs down.. 3G..
Its a tower that has been upgraded but still have yet to stay connected to 4G longer then a minute..
No there is an issue...I had a moto photon that was very fast on 3g.....when i switched to the evo lte...i noted it seem to be a lot slower...figure it was the network
Well i went back on my photon while i unlock the evo....and again the photon just flys compared to the evo....there is an issue..a big one
Sent from my MB855 using xda app-developers app
Well I switched from the E3D to the ELTE and I gained on 3g speeds.. I can tell a diff in speed . I got a taste of LTE yesterday for about 5 hrs and it is very noticeable fast over WiMAX .

Evo 4G compared to LTE

I've searched the forums for this, but don't see an exact match. Sorry if I missed a duplicate thread, and a link to it would suffice as an answer.
I am nearing the end of my 2 year contract for my Sprint Evo 4G. I think they are referred to as OG Evo's here for some reason? OG = Original? Anyway, it's been a GREAT phone. Wife got one at the same time. I rooted both of them, installed Sprint Lovers Rom and have basically done nothing else since except refuse updates and install/uninstall apps. I rooted it to be able to do wifi tether, which I depend on at times.
The only real reason I'm thinking of getting the 4G LTE version is the camera. The camera on the Evo 4G just flat sucks. My only complaint on the phone, but a big one as I am outdoors a lot, like to take pictures a lot, and would like to get away from carrying a point and shoot in addition to my phone. I've played with settings until I'm blue in the face, and get the occasional decent picture, but it's just not good. I want a very good camera and it seems this phone has one, by all official reviews I've seen on it.
But I also read on the 4G LTE forums a lot of reports of more dropped calls, connectivity and slow data issues compared to other phones like the Evo 3D. Where I live, all we have is 3G. I've done some speednet tests on it and get in the area of 1.25mb down, .30mb up currently. That works for what I need. We will likely not see LTE anytime soon, if ever, here at the house (in the Ozark Mts of Arkansas).
Am I likely to see performance impacts if I go to the 4G LTE? If so, has anyone done comparisons to see how much is lost? I really, really, really want a better camera, but not if it's going to make calls and/or tethering worse.
I went from an original Evo to the LTE and I have not noticed any change in connectivity or call signal quality. I do have both wimax and LTE in my area and my LTE speeds are roughly double what I was getting with wimax. My 3G speeds are identical between the two devices. The camera is indeed awesome; there is virtually no shutter lag which is a miracle for a cameraphone.

It just so happens that I have both my OG Evo and new LTE right here in front of me.
In general, I have noticed the reception of the LTEvo is marginally worse (0 to 5 dB worse) which is not significant and will probably not be noticable.
Wifi and GPS appear equally superb. No complains at all.
The camera is definitely better overall but that should be a given. Daylight pictures are excellent but indoor lowlight picture are very subject to motion blur. It is fairly difficult to get a picture to come out perfectly crisp with low light. Installing a ROM with an HD Camera mod definitely helps too. I've attached several pictures. A couple to demonstrate the challenges of low lighting and a couple with good outdoor lighting. Could I have taken a better low light picture? Sure I can and I definitely retook the pictures that turned out bad but that's an extra shot and extra time wasted.
Good luck!
I had an OG Evo myself, and it was a smooth transition from it to the LTEVO. I did have connectivity issues and WiFi issues, but that was addressed by the latest OTA, which was baked into several ROMs with r00t access.
The big delta for me between the OG Evo and LTEVO, was the hardware platform with better CPU, RAM and sdcard specs. On the software side, it came preloaded with ICS and JB is on the way, so there's no comparison.
In the camera department, yes, I hated the OG Evo camera, even at the 8 MP benchmark. However, even stock, the LTEVO camera destroys the OG Evo in the camera department and there are mods available here to enhance it, which I run personally on my daily driver handset.
Last but not least, the OG Evo necessitated carrying extra charged batteries with you, and chargers themselves, since the OG Evo was an energy hog. The LTEVO is sooooo much better in this department, and I've had runs that lasted well over 24 hours without a charge.
Convinced yet?
HTH!

i came from the og evo to the LTE, both rooted with s-off. and my data seems faster on the LTE. as far as dropped calls i can probably count on one hand how many times that happened between both phones.
I suspect you'll be very interested in a thread I created. Took a pic with the Evo 4G, and then one with the LTE.

It's pretty obvious that the LTE has a MUCH better camera.
