I've searched the forums for this, but don't see an exact match. Sorry if I missed a duplicate thread, and a link to it would suffice as an answer.
I am nearing the end of my 2 year contract for my Sprint Evo 4G. I think they are referred to as OG Evo's here for some reason? OG = Original? Anyway, it's been a GREAT phone. Wife got one at the same time. I rooted both of them, installed Sprint Lovers Rom and have basically done nothing else since except refuse updates and install/uninstall apps. I rooted it to be able to do wifi tether, which I depend on at times.
The only real reason I'm thinking of getting the 4G LTE version is the camera. The camera on the Evo 4G just flat sucks. My only complaint on the phone, but a big one as I am outdoors a lot, like to take pictures a lot, and would like to get away from carrying a point and shoot in addition to my phone. I've played with settings until I'm blue in the face, and get the occasional decent picture, but it's just not good. I want a very good camera and it seems this phone has one, by all official reviews I've seen on it.
But I also read on the 4G LTE forums a lot of reports of more dropped calls, connectivity and slow data issues compared to other phones like the Evo 3D. Where I live, all we have is 3G. I've done some speednet tests on it and get in the area of 1.25mb down, .30mb up currently. That works for what I need. We will likely not see LTE anytime soon, if ever, here at the house (in the Ozark Mts of Arkansas).
Am I likely to see performance impacts if I go to the 4G LTE? If so, has anyone done comparisons to see how much is lost? I really, really, really want a better camera, but not if it's going to make calls and/or tethering worse.
I went from an original Evo to the LTE and I have not noticed any change in connectivity or call signal quality. I do have both wimax and LTE in my area and my LTE speeds are roughly double what I was getting with wimax. My 3G speeds are identical between the two devices. The camera is indeed awesome; there is virtually no shutter lag which is a miracle for a cameraphone.

No LTE in my area as well but between wifi and decent 3g I'm enjoying the faster speed of the LTE

That's spot on for my wife and I who both switched from the OG to the LTE, and the LTE is only going to spread

It just so happens that I have both my OG Evo and new LTE right here in front of me.
In general, I have noticed the reception of the LTEvo is marginally worse (0 to 5 dB worse) which is not significant and will probably not be noticable.
Wifi and GPS appear equally superb. No complains at all.
The camera is definitely better overall but that should be a given. Daylight pictures are excellent but indoor lowlight picture are very subject to motion blur. It is fairly difficult to get a picture to come out perfectly crisp with low light. Installing a ROM with an HD Camera mod definitely helps too. I've attached several pictures. A couple to demonstrate the challenges of low lighting and a couple with good outdoor lighting. Could I have taken a better low light picture? Sure I can and I definitely retook the pictures that turned out bad but that's an extra shot and extra time wasted.
Good luck!
I had an OG Evo myself, and it was a smooth transition from it to the LTEVO. I did have connectivity issues and WiFi issues, but that was addressed by the latest OTA, which was baked into several ROMs with r00t access.
The big delta for me between the OG Evo and LTEVO, was the hardware platform with better CPU, RAM and sdcard specs. On the software side, it came preloaded with ICS and JB is on the way, so there's no comparison.
In the camera department, yes, I hated the OG Evo camera, even at the 8 MP benchmark. However, even stock, the LTEVO camera destroys the OG Evo in the camera department and there are mods available here to enhance it, which I run personally on my daily driver handset.
Last but not least, the OG Evo necessitated carrying extra charged batteries with you, and chargers themselves, since the OG Evo was an energy hog. The LTEVO is sooooo much better in this department, and I've had runs that lasted well over 24 hours without a charge.
Convinced yet?
HTH!

i came from the og evo to the LTE, both rooted with s-off. and my data seems faster on the LTE. as far as dropped calls i can probably count on one hand how many times that happened between both phones.
I suspect you'll be very interested in a thread I created. Took a pic with the Evo 4G, and then one with the LTE.

It's pretty obvious that the LTE has a MUCH better camera.

Itching for a new phone soon, and not happy with Sprint lately, their billing can be whacky, I get a different priced bill every month, even though I am on unlimited, and I have to call Sprint every month to straighten it out.
Plus I am worried that with the recent phone they just showcased yesterday, it is a total turd, and afraid what direction Sprint is even heading ? Will there be an EVO2, no real strong rumors on that yet, just worried the future of Sprint.
Would love to see "Myn's" ROM from the EVO or something close to it come out for the Thunderbolt too. And what about battery life on the Thunderbolt, will be it just as bad as the EVO, due to having both 3G + 4G Radios ? And lastly will LTE be good in Chicago area, better speeds than 4G on Sprint ?
Thanks.
It kind of is as LTE is suppose to be a bit faster than WiMax, plus the lower spectrum is uses, means it can work indoor, and between buildings better.
The processor is also faster due to being 2nd gen. If its like the g2 it will overclockable to up to 2ghz

Thanks for replies, I will wait a bit.
#1 see if Sprint gives a good indication of an EVO-2 this Summer, should know in March with the big phone show, if it leaks out there. Would hate to ditch the EVO, for the Thunderbolt, then few months later an even better phones comes out in the EVO 2.
#2, By the end of March, the Thunderbolt will be rooted and hopefully have a nice ROM available.
EVO 2 is far from a rumor, though the summer release may not happen. The Dual Core processor + WiMax chipset is giving them help right now. Now to answer your question, the Thunderbolt is definitely an upgrade from the EVO in every way, but it's a battery hog as well. I wouldn't recommend using LTE, if you don't really have to, unless it's for a quick download.

I'm not sure how it's going to work yet, but I didn't think we had a choice whether it would be in 3g mode or 4g?
Yeah, same way with the EVO. You'll notice a little lag, when you're switching from lte to wifi, and vice versa.
Yeah I don't think LTE will function like WiMAX at all. Aside from the marketing label "4G" they have pretty much nothing in common.
LTE and wimax aren't even remotely similar. LTE stacks up impressively.
LTE stands for Long Term Evolution, so it will continue to get better with age.
LTE also sports a robust core, and has typically no loss of packets and 20ms latency when switching towers. The network utilizes advanced versions of Node B devices, which are just more capable modules than there predecessors (there are two per tower for LTE standard, and have greater bandwidth handling, as well as continuing support for legacy devices and 3g). LTE doesn't need line of sight, and tolerates MIMO antenna technology on clients.
Unlike Wimax, LTE is true 4G.

Yea can't wait to try out the talking and data at the same time, not that I have ever really found a need for it, but hey if you got it...
I have heard that the voice quality will suffer some when using data at the same time which is why VZW isn't promoting it. Don't know how much the quality will degrade or if I will even be able to tell, I'm not much of an audio hound so I don't usually hear drops in quality that much.
Besides them both having a 4.3" screen and kickstand they are completely different devices. It is honestly annoying to constantly hear people compare them due to the aesthetic design similarities.
The ThunderBolt has a unibody aluminum design and great build quality. As others have stated, the ThunderBolt also uses the newest generation of Qualcomm Snapdragon CPUs. This 1GHz CPU is not the same as the older generation used in the EVO, it is an entirely different beast. The latest Snapdragons are more efficient and the clock speed being the same means nothing.
The TB also has more RAM than the EVO, Verizon 4G LTE (not WiMAX), and Dolby Audio onboard behind the kickstand. Finally, the TB includes a 32GB microSD card preinstalled.
Any other comparisons simply boil down to looks and similar design style. The devices themselves are not the same.
Let's not forget DLNA. I think it's a great feature that will future-proof the Tbolt for awhile.
ahh...so glad I didn't know about this phone sooner, as I'd have been dying while waiting...I just started checkin the phone forums a week or so ago for the first time since last fall due to finding out about a surprise upgrade on our account due the end of january..this week or 2 wait sucks, I cant imagine finding out about this months ago...
There's a video comparison of the TB and Evo on Wirefly.com. The TB is roughly 2x faster than the Evo.

I have heard this stated here and on other forums. I heard it in one of the video reviews (maybe the unboxing one). However, I have seen no substantiation of this. There are 3 reasons why I doubt is it actually unibody. 1 From the limited views inside the device it does not appear to be. 2. It clearly has a thin plastic back cover. 3. It would be a fairly radical design and manufacturing departure for HTC. It certainly would be a cool Apple-ish feature. I'm keen for some further evidence of this. Let us know if you have anything.
It's not an evo, why can't people get that throw their heads. Just because it has a 4.3in screen, froyo, and and made by htc people think it's an Evo. If using want to compare it to something compare it to the Desire HD maybe. Evo was not even the first 4.3in htc phone that was the hd2. The Evo a great piece of hardware and still is but the htc thunderbolt is something fresh in my opinion. The tb only shares 3 things with the evo screen size, os, and manufacture. I personally loved the evo it, for its size, speed, and functionality. I have my htc thunderbolt pre ordered.

Is it even worth it to upgrade to this while not able to get LTE? I'm in Chicago and I dont wanna be stuck with only the cdma 3g again until LTE is deployed here. Anyone know if the EVO LTE will connect to wimax?
I would wait for them to announce it for your city first. I was in chicago last summer and 4g wrked perfect everywhere
Unless your a phone whore(who isnt on XDA) and need to have the latest and greatest. Wait.
Might as well keep some type of 4g(wimax) and wait. Hell, who knows. Maybe by the time you get LTE, there will be something new and magical out. EVO 4G LTE Sandwich Maker(can only wish).

Unfortunately yes I'm a huge phone whore haha.
rocking an evo 3d now on the newest mean rom.
Had an upgrade since January first and it's been killing me waiting for a new phone, but I think I may hold off until the GS3 is announced and see what that has to offer. I'm kinda getting sick of sense and really like the stock ICS look and feel.
Wait for what? The phone is a beast period. LTE is just an added plus. I will be there release day. Was first with Wimax and will be first with LTE, but regardless, im on wifi 90% of the time, and this monster will pretty much be comparable with any phone released the rest of 2012 to me, so im all in.
Wait for LTE to be deployed in Chicago. Mainly just because Sprints 3g is absolutely horrid. Plus whenever our net goes down I love that I can just tether wimax and its plenty fast

Well you will probably find your answer a little closer to launch. I would think by then sprint would have firm dates to when major cities will be getting its LTE turned on.
I'm getting it and then patiently wait for LTE. I have Wimax in my area but I'm mostly on WiFi anyways.

Chicago is in first round of NetworkVision deployments so LTE should reach the city sooner than others...DONE by October...but youll see improvements wayyy before then as, soon as the clusters are turned on you'll notice incredible 3G speeds hopefully. should be well over 1Mbps easy and sub 100pings...

Slightly off topic but still somewhat relevant. I know that it took a long time to get Wimax working in CM on the OG EVO. Does anyone know if LTE will be just as difficult? It might not be an issue if the 3G speeds improve drastically with Network Vision. Here in Raleigh, NC 3G has been awful for several months now so I've been living off Wimax and wifi when possible. I'd hate to upgrade to this phone and be stuck on my current download speeds in CM9 (yes I'm getting a little bit ahead of myself lol).

If you want high dev support, yeah. Remember, this is 2 years after the original Evo so most of those devs will use their upgrade on the Evo LTE. Also, this is supposed to be htc's device of the year. And did I mention it's the first LTE phone on sprint?
So yeah, this phone will have high dev support which is already a reason to get it. If you're still not impressed, remember that the specs on that thing make it a beast.
Worth it.

Even without LTE support, this is as big of an upgrade as the EVO 4G was to ...uhh...the Hero?
Similar advantage points include but are not limited to:
-bigger screen (4.7in)
-higher resolution (720P)
-better display technology (SLCD2)
-better processor
-better camera
-better software
-true Beats audio support
-"HD Voice" EVRC-NW
-higher capacity battery
-Sprint LTE support (won't matter yet to those who won't have LTE in their area, but still)
It's well worth the investment, especially since WiMAX isn't being worked on anymore
Why would you NOT upgrade? Unless you use WiMAX and LTE won't be available in your area. Other than that, there is no logical reason to stick with the EVO 3D after yesterday's announcement. Even though the EVO 4G LTE isn't that great looking, it blows our phone out of the water in every single aspect of the word.
The EVO 4G to EVO 3D on the other hand, not THAT much of an upgrade.
-Camera quality subjective
-Battery life subjective
-Support is definitely not even close to where the EVO 4G was and here we are nearly a year later
-3D feature subjective
-Missing kickstand
Nothing on the EVO 4G LTE is subjective in terms of being just plain better than the EVO 3D, except maybe the battery life, which has yet to be benchmarked.
my main question is that by the time LTE reaches Chicago will there be something better? b/c I use wimax a fair amount

I hate to rain on your parade, but I am in San Antonio (one of the first 4 cities), and I have checked the upgrade status, and almost all upgrades have been done here, yet I just ran speed test 5 times and the highest I got was 268kbps down. This is pretty much standard here. I think I got over 500kbps once. LTE may be awesome, but I think that the rumors of better 3g are far overblown.
Hi,
I have an Epic touch rooted with CM9 which I love, I really hate that the reception is so terrible on this phone. Much worse than my OG evo.
Any idea if it will do better in fringe areas?
I find I have to toggle airplane mode frequently due to LOS.
Thanks,
RIch
Interesting it says you are in NY, do you have good 3G there or is it just your phone/texting that is a problem? Our OGs were great phone service but 3G was slow. Now we have 3G internet much faster but calls are dropped, even texts are dropped
I am in NY (50 minutes outside of NYC), but my area is not known for good coverage on any carrier. I may try to use the Evo again just to see if it is a bit better in terms of service or if it is as bad as the Epic.
For me is better then the gS2 or galaxy nexus, but personally experience some people said the evo 4g was better

Hey guys,
I would love to have some light shed on this topic in order to help me decide which phone to get. But please bear this in mind, I am a technical person so I would like some opinions with good reasons not just diehard fans like HTC or Samsung all the way and never give a justifiable reason.
That being said, my major concerns are smoothness, camera quality, and battery. So I have read and watched many reviews online, I feel S3 somehow is a little bit snappier with the transition animation. 4G LTE is choppier or more laggy by just a very tiny amount. Not sure if it's true. I was using my roommate's S3 which is Saudi Arabian version. It was kinda laggy (it's more laggy than my evo 3D)....but could be just his phone.
For camera part, it's very interesting. With all the reviews online, one would expect S3 is better than 4G LTE and most certainly better than better than EVO 3D. However, I was just playing around with his S3 and my EVO 3D.
Here are some pictures with default settings,

S3 focusing on the guitar
https://www.dropbox.com/s/i4nfn8f43hh1bz7/S3 Guitar.jpg
As for battery life, I don't have 4G LTE or S3 so I can't test about it. One thing is that S3 can swap the battery. It would be great if someone can share some real life data.
Please also note that, my EVO 3D is rooted with ZR3D GT rom and my roommate's S3 is Saudi Arabian version. This could affect the very non-scientific test I carried out.
Thank you very much for helping me out with the choice between these two great phones.
One very important part you are missing: if you have a need to use LTE while you own either phone, do not get the EVO LTE.

The theory is that it can be fixed with a software update, but when that will happen, nobody knows. Currently, you sometimes have to cycle through airplane mode or "CDMA/LTE" and "CDMA only" modes to get it to find LTE. Another theory is that once all of the towers are upgraded, this won't be much of an issue as it will always be in an LTE area, though I don't know what to make of this theory.
And yes, the EVO LTE supports SV-DO, so you can place calls and use data simultaneously.

Sorry, I read it wrong. I thought you were saying that you couldn't access LTE/3G data while on the phone. But yeah, I see what you're saying...
When talking about the cameras the EVO LTE is superior in stills and lowlights with the GS3 being a little better at video capture. Keep in mind the Sprint GS3 has the same processor as the EVO but 2 GB of ram so multitasking is much better than the EVO.
Near same specs
The LTEVO and GS3 are both insane phones.
This biggest differences u will notice stock are Samsung uses amoled screens and is .1" bigger, has a physical home button, menu instead of recent apps, and 1 gb more ram, removable battery, and button placement.
Now, many think 2 gb is twice that of the LTEVO, but I consistently have an extra 150 to 250 mb of ram left with 10 apps running at once, a phone at this point with the games (only thing to even come close to using it all) don't use all that much. I mean it is technically more "future" proof but who knows.
Now, I get all day battery from my evo even with heavy use. I have 10 hrs screen on with 40% battery left.
Once these phones are rooted, they become almost identical. Although looking thru the forums it seems the GS3 have more devs.
Both can be over clocked to 1.8 ghz easy and ik my evo hits 2.1 ghz on sense. Both have the same gpu and both don't like to be over clocked very much as they tend to create artifacts.
I personally don't like the feel of the GS3's plastic cheap feel. The aluminum sides of the evo give it some class and durability. The kickstand is difficult to pull out without nails tho, super strong.
At this point all I can recommend is get your hands on the LTEVO and GS3 us version and try them both. Don't worry about the software to much as the software can be changed to ur liking. Just get a feel for how the phone looks and feels in ur hands.
Hope this was helpful.
Hit thanks if it was.

Has HTC fixed the multitasking issue? I searched online and found nothing. The update didn't seem to fix it?
The gimped multitasking is apparently a feature, but hey the last update prioritized their ics browser.
I have the HTC and my wife has the s3. I like then both. Multitasking on the s3 is phenomenal! Unlike on the evo, multitasking is so so. Yes I applied the multitasking fixes. Touchwiz is a lot smoother than sense. But sense is more intuitive. The screen on the EVO kills the s3. I really hate the oversaturated colors on the s3 Camera seams to be close. White balance does seam to be a bit better on the s3 though. EVO hands down better built quality by a mile. Battery life on the EVO is better, don't be fooled by the 2100mah rating. It really a toss up...if the EVO had 2gb ram, I'll be a clear winner imo. With that in mind s3 by a very tiny margin. Go test out both and you decide. Hope I helped.
I had an S3 for just about a month and ended up trading it in for a 4G LTE. They're quite similar overall, but do have some differences that could make or break one for you.
I put together an eval of both of them here a month or so ago, with a focus on actual day-to-day use rather than a comparison of specs:

What settings are you using to have 10 hours on screen time and 40% battery left over? Are you rooted? Shock kernel are you using? That's amazing performance.

LTE is just down right frustrating on the EVO LTE. Wish I could switch out mine for a GS3.

Ever time I travel and am forced to mainly rely on the network I pay every month (sprint) -I get so frustrated I swear I'm swapping for a gs3...then I get back to my office where I'm on WIFI all day and i always end up letting it go. My gf also has an S3 and uses LTE constantly inside the house, literally right next to me, and I need to travel at least a mile away to hook up with it. I really am at a loss for words here. I'm not a complainer . I was very patient but I truly feel like I was swindled in some way. I paid full freight for this thing and it is not delivering on its own namesake (4G LTE) for Christ sake. And yes I've contacted HTC and sprint.

File a complaint with the BBB and Attorney General office. Take video and pictures of your phone not connecting to LTE and the S3 working fine. Document it.
Demand the issue be fixed or the replace your phone with a working one.

Am thinking about the evo 4g lte because I've read excellent reviews about the call quality. I already know I won't be getting lte in my area for a long time. Are the 3g speeds actually worse on this model as compared with other Sprint models ? (some reviews have claimed this)
My 3g is slow enough as it is on my HTC Touch (can live with it though), but won't be able to accept anything slower.
i have kno problems with this phone.. its perfect for me im just bored with it... i need a new phone every 6 months i think!!! lol..
I'm hoping the following review is incorrect:
The ugly:
This is where the phone starts to fall apart for me. The network capabilities are awful. They are a clear downgrade from my Evo 4g. I live in Kansas City, and my old Evo 4g had both excellent 3g coverage, and excellent WiMax coverage. Ping times were the only problem I had with WiMax (typically in the 200-300 range), but I typically got 3-7Mbps down and ~1Mbps up with very reliable coverage, especially in my home. Outside of WiMax range, I reliably got 3g coverage that pulled ~1-2Mbps down and up. This is what I would expect, given that I am in Sprint's home market.
I upgraded to the Evo 4g LTE after hearing that LTE was officially "live" in Kansas City. Unfortunately the news that I missed was that by "live", they really mean "about 30% live". There is little to no actual LTE coverage in the city. At my apartment, where WiMax was previously very strong, I can only connect to LTE rarely, and when I do the signal is so weak that my connection times out regularly. Watching antenna strength, the LTE connection sits around -115 to -120dBm (in non-technical terms, that is just a hair above zero bars). I actually disabled the LTE antenna on my phone because it is disruptive FAR more often than it is useful.
"So what", you might say. "Just use 3g". I would agree with you. 3g should be able to get me by in the next few months while Sprint continues their LTE rollout, hopefully with an antenna near my home. Unfortunately the phone's 3g antenna is also highly problematic. 3g signal pickup is weaker than my old Evo 4g, and speeds are considerably worse than my previous phone. Pings usually sit around 200, which is acceptable, but I almost never get above 0.5Mbps down, or up. Additionally (and even more importantly), the phone has a habit of dropping the 3g signal. I tether often, and when I do I tend to lose 3g every few minutes. This is in close proximity to a 3g tower, and with a strong signal (4-5 bars, in the -70 to -80dBm range). The phone will just inexplicably lose 3g connectivity. Google around a bit and find out: this is a known problem that many people are dealing with, and HTC/Sprint have acknowledged the issue and are trying to rectify it. Problem is, it isn't fixed. I truly hope that in the near future an OTA update will fix the problems... after all, I'm basically stuck with this phone for the next 23 months. The network issues are bad enough that I really do miss my old Evo 4g, and I'm very tempted to reactivate it.
Conclusion: at the end of the day, the Evo 4g LTE is a phone, and as such I think the network issues are a pretty big deal. If you are on WiFi constantly, then they won't be an issue for you, but if you're dependent upon Sprint's network in any way, be very careful... this phone has some major baggage.
Update 9/25/2012: A couple OTA updates later, and it is still in pretty bad shape. I am very used to 500ms+ ping now, and 0.1Mbps download/upload speeds. 4g coverage is still nonexistant. According to xda and s4gru, this problem is SPECIFIC TO THE EVO 4g LTE. As in an iPhone 5 and SGIII will both connect just fine to 4g, but an Evo in the same room will not.
Try this neat trick: Go to craigslist and search for Evo 4g LTE. See how many nearly new Evos are being sold for less than half the price of a new one? That speaks more volumes than my review does

These post really make me scratch my head...In Memphis LTE is only a month old and only in the northern parts of the city...constant 15mbs+ and elsewhere 4g isnt on yet 3G is maxed out....I never have any problems maintaining a over decent connection on 3G.....it's just odd how much I hear how crappy the ELTE is.....Is it really a bad phone and I'm just in a city where Sprint has it act together or are some of you vice-versa??

My 3g has been much better than my old HTC Hero and better than my Dad's og Evo(not to mention my mom's Samsung Nexus S, My brothers' Samsung, Motorola, and my sister's iCrap 4s).
As long as you stick to stock based roms, you'll be fine. HTC has some great tweaks that cm10 and aosp roms don't have that seem to boost bandwidth and 3g speeds.

Test it out. Set a timer for 13 days just to be sure.. Thats why carriers give you the 14 day trial period to make sure your happy before being stuck 2 more years with them.
I for one am happy with my EVO LTE. I also have a GS3 and from time to time go back and forth.
I had a chance to spend about 3 minutes with this device today at the Sprint store. Love at first sight. I can't put into words how elegantly this phone felt in my hand.
Didn't have time to check out the 3g connectivity, but call quality did seem above average for a Sprint phone.
Can you download a larger format dial pad for this phone (that works properly) ?

Are you saying you're getting 3-5 Mbps download speeds while connected to 3G?
