[Q] Charging the phone for the first time - HTC EVO 3D

I don't see any suggestions for charging the Evo 3D for the first time. Anyone know whats best to do as far as not messing up my battery when I just got the phone?

You should be good with topping it off before u start using it if you want ur battery to be calibrated or whatever

^ yup... mine has been on the charger for about 30 minutes now... still havent powered it on yet.

Always wondered it that made a damned bit of difference in the long run.
Usually so anxious to dive into it I plug it in and dive.
I'm gonna condition it anyway that night.
Any thoughts?

Doesn't the battery already come fully charged?

They're usually about half charged...and the suggest you fully charge before using.

you can use it, but dont take it off charger until it is fully charged.
and no they dont come fully charged, the phones are partially charged.

as long as you do it at somepoint you should be fine...
Just most people never do it and wonder why they lose 15% so quickly

This is an old wives tale. Totally untrue.

so no difference?
i mean it would amaze me that if u just start using your phone, instead of fully recharging it once, would somehow ruin the battery for the rest if its life

dadoc how long did it take for yours to fully charge because i've had mine charging for an hour or more and no green light yet

fwiw, I've been charging it with the phone turned off for about an hour and 15 minutes and still no green light.

well no green light could be a GOOD thing
becuase the EVO used to give green light and it wasnt fully full

Took about 1.5 hours..... i used that BS charger that came with it so it took longer than expected

Mine has been charging now for about 2 hours and still red light. When I first plugged it in it was flashing red for about 5 minutes, so I'm assuming my battery was damn near dead. (have not turned it on and won't until it is fully charged)
I am charging it off my work computer's USB port since the cable won't reach an outlet from my desk so I know my charging will be slower than using an AC outlet

You might wanna charge it using ac power not the usb port....especially if the phone is turned off. If you need to sit it on the floor for it to reach or go look for a powerstrip or something. If its still red it likely not charging.

I usually don't charge from USB but I don't have my long ass USB cable on me.

Nice!!! Glad ur got ur green light... time to be unproductive at work now hahahahaha

Lithium ion batteries don't need a precharge and also don't have a memory. Don't overcharge it or let it completely run out of charge. Charge whenever you want.

Plugged in all day or no?

I'm a truck driver, I work 12-16 hours a day. I use my bolt to listen to my hometown radio shows, and slacker when they aren't on.
Is it a bad thing to have it plugged in all day? I read once its fully charged it runs off the charger power..
Thoughts?

Someone did a test and after being fully charged the phone resorts to a trickle charge so you should be okay but probably.not the best thing for your battery.

so i came from the evo 4G where people threw hissy fits both ways. There were people who would claim left and right that it is bad for the battery, that the battery will catch fire, melt, explode, what have you, and then there was the other like 80% of us who used trickle charging with out a problem.
personally, and what I seemed to notice, the like 6 people who actually claimed to have issues with trickle charging had purchased and were using super cheap chinese batteries.
So i am going to disagree, and say there will be no issue with trickle charging unless you start using cheap chinese batteries, and even then the percentage chance of you having an issue is so minor.
I have noticed that until it gets to 100% it gets awfully hot. If I leave it charged/plugged in all day its cool to the touch.

looking at battery monitor widget my phone after hitting 100% charge is pulling 180 or less mA while "idle" and the temp sits about 32-33C. Seems to keep the Voltage very very steady. Whatever HTC did I really doubt it will hurt your phone in anyway.
I don't think it will hurt the phone. I do think it will make the battery have even less life though. I.e, when you finally do unplug it, the battery won't last very long. Batteries need to be charged and discharged often to work well.
My laptop at home stays plugged in all the time. And when I unplug it, it lasts about 10 minutes on the battery. lol

your laptop battery is probably not a lithium-ion battery. Please read said link. Your laptop battery is a NiMH which has the "memory" your talking about. Our cellphones have Lithium-Ion batteries.

No, my statement was 100% true. It might've been irrelevant because it's a different type of battery, but it was not false as you said.
I have read that LiOn batteries do not develop memories as bad as other types, but they still do to some extent. FWIW.
If you watch your phone, it stops charging when its full. I often pull the phone off the charger with less then 100 charge due to this and this is also why the bump charge will bump it back up too 100%
So leaving it plugged in ask day will have no harmful effects at all.

actually battery monitor widget says the opposite. My phone continues to charge after hitting 100%. It doesn't do what my evo would do stock, where it would charge to 100%, let the phone die to 90% and then charge back to 100%.

Personally I never shut my phone off, it's on 24/7/365, if I don't want to be bothered it goes into silent mode but is always on.
For me, I plug the phone in every night when I go to bed... when I wake up, I unplug it for a minute and then plug it back in. Normally when I wake up it's anywhere between 95-100% showing.... Once I'm done getting ready I grab the phone and off I go with a full charged battery.
Unlike some phones the android phones have never kept a 100% charge while plugged in... this is one thing I do miss from the iphone, it always kept it at 100% while plugged in. The android phones stop charging when it get's to 100% and start again at an unkown %.
There is no magic... the only reason for unplulgging it is to start the charging process again.
what's the exact name and publisher of that battery widget? i'd like to take a look at it.

Use the built in battery widget and see what you get.. it will display the actual percentage on the screen.
I doubt it's a problem, it should be capable of switching to a trickle or over to powering vs. charging in the circuitry. The worst thing you can do for these relative to the charge is drain them completely and let them sit drained. These days for the longest life, you'd keep it at around 3/4 charged, but it's not a huge difference in life usually. The reason for that is lithium batteries hold a native charge by default.

They do not have memory. I dug up an old article I wrote nearly 6 years ago where I touch on that fact even notebookforums.com/thread94560.html

Does your 3D's battery achieved 100% Charging??? Mine Hasn't!!

For some reason my 3D's battery never achieves 100% charge. I leave it charging using the HTC charger included and I never get more than 98% charge after 12 hours.
Anyone else have this problem??

Mine does, but it takes a while. Normally it charges up pretty fast up to like 95. Then it slows down and once it gets to 99, it stays there for atleast 10 mins and finally goes to 100. One thing I did notice though is when it gets to 100, even if its on the charger it will start falling back to 99 and 98.
Mine has never reached 100%, even if I unplug it when the light turns green and plug it back in it will just stay at 99%.
I've woken up to 97 or 98, it has never gone above that.
I believe HTC has some sort of smart charger system on here. It will charge quickly to ~ 95, then slow down until it hits 100. Then it will quit charging at all until it drops back down to ~95 or so and repeat the process. Supposedly, it will increase battery life by not overcharging it.

3vo. That is all that needs be said.
The Evo 3D always chargers too 100% what you are seeing is that once the device hits 100% it stops charging and waits till the battery drops to 90% or so before it starts charging again, so what does that mean you're catching the battery after it has stop charging and is recharging again

He is right....on the OG EVO its would display 100 while it was dropping but the 3vo shows the actual percentage
Once the led turns green unplug restart and plug back in. Should now show the led red again and finish charging. After once it should be fine.

I am using an aftermarket stand alone battery charger. When I took it off the charger this morning it only shows at 91%. Does anybody have any idea why that would be the case? I have used this same kind of a setup with my Evo and it was always at 100% when I pulled the battery off the charger. I was even using extended batteries and never had a problem!

Probably some kind of safeguard chip built into the battery that does this even on aftermarket wall chargers. I have never seen this before and every aftermarket charger I have had has charged the batteries to 100% and they stayed there, but maybe HTC got hip to the aftermarket chargers and implemented the battery mod to work on them too. Just a guess and there is no proven fact to this statement.
Run it down, then charge it up
My 3D wouldn't charge to 100% until I ran it until it shut down due to low battery and charged it until the green light like 3 times. Once I hit that magical 3rd time, it showed 100%.
at first it was only orange light , but after unplugging then plugging back in I get green light.
you can get a 100% charger like others have said, but for sure the charging software makes it tricky

Thanks man. I thought I was going crazy, b/c I wake up every morning to about 96% charge after about 8hrs on the charger. Totally makes sense now. (pun intended )
Every wall hub charger I get from ebay has helped charge all my HTC and Nexus S phones better. I always get 100%, and they stay there not draining to 90% in under 5 mins like the wall plug does.
I abhor the wall plug and have avoided it like the plague..not only that, but micro USB breaks very easily and is not a sturdy charging port.
I see them break on every modern model phone today. It's just a horrible unsturdy design. Wish we'd go back to mini usb.

That is the problem. Every one that I have ever used also charged and kept them at 100%. This battery did not. It came off the charger after a full day of being fully charged and it was at 91%
I have seen mine go to 100% once. They must have done something new here with either how it charges, or how it computes the percentage remaining, since this is the first HTC phone I have had (I've had them since the Palm Treos) that doesn't go from 100% to 90% in the first 10 mins of use.

How long does it take to charge?

I've been charging this sucker (it's off, never been turned on) for about 3 hours now. At first, it was getting warm from charging, now it's stone cold. But the stupid orange light won't go away.
How long did you charge yours?
Mine was completely dead upon arrival, as was another posters. He said his charged full in about 3 hours, mine is still charging, and I'm about 2 and 1/2 hours in with the phone off.
I charged mine for about 3 hours when i got it. never turned it on till it was fully charged...
with mostly setting up being done and a few camera shots i had mine o nthe charger roughly 3 hrs.. so ya the reports of 3 hrs sounds about right
when I got mine it was down to around 10%. Soon as the associate gave it to me I shut off all the auto synching and data connections, got it home and on the charger. Took about two and a half hours...maybe three. Though I've been finding it really holds a charge. Took it off to use it for 10 minutes to make a few calls and it still hadn't dropped a single percentage. Had I done that with the original EVO we'd be looking at 5-10% loss. The phone really screams!
If I remember the 3d took .3 days to charge past 99% lol mine did I know a few others did but I'm trying turning it off to see if I can get to 100%
Came to me at 50%

Heh, I've been waiting to unplug it before going to bed, but it's been sitting at 99% for quite awhile. I guess I'll check it in the morning. Got an extra hour of play time with it though!
I charged mine over night and this morning the orange light was blinking and the battery icon kept changing from the charging icon to the full icon. Wonder if it's because I'm using a 3rd party USB cord to charge with? Seems like a strange way to tell the user that the battery is fully charged....

Try to use the supplied charger when you can. The charger is 1 amp vs others which are lower (approx 500-750 ma). When I had my Thunderbolt, I had this same issue and someone pointed this out to me which seemed to fix this. It also charges it a little faster.

Time the Note II takes to recharge

How long should our Note II take to recharge from 0% to 100%? Problem with practically all Android phones is that it just takes way too long to recharge. Last night I plugged my Note at about 1AM, depleted all the way down. When I woke up at 7AM, it was still at 70%. Does that sound about right for everyone? I understand that we have a huge battery capacity but the limitation with the microUSB port is definitely there.
no something is not right...my device recharges in 2.5hrs from below 10% to 100%
You using an outlet or CPU?
if CPU, are you directly connecting to a USB port or a hub?
My cpu charges so slowly compared to an outlet.

I would turn the phone off, try dif outlet, try charging it, see if it is any better.

if yes, probably something you have installed then i would just restart from stock.

I've been having this problem too, and I can't really pin it down. I'm using the charger that comes with the S3,which is only rated at 1amp so I know that's the biggest factor. However, sometimes it charges to full in a few hours, other times after a night on the charger it will have only made it to 60% or so. The real stumper is that it only tends to drain about 1-2% an hour in deep sleep, so it's not like it's draining faster than the charger can keep up. It seems completely random. I'm ordering a 2amp charger to see if it helps, im sure it will, but I'm just confused by the random nature of this.
Yea something is definitely wrong. Mine charges in about 2.5 hours from near 0%. Try a different outlet

Yeah about 2-3 hours is my usual charge time from 20% to 0% range respectively.
I still can't help but feel that that is somehow slow though. Can't tell, it's been so long since I had a small battery I don't know what a fast charge is nowadays.
Going from zero is way different than going from 1% the battery tries to protect itself so it trickle charges for a while. Honestly going from 10-100 should not take more than three hours probably closer to two

not sure if this helps, but do you have light manager installed? I had an issue when I first downloaded it and set it up, that night when I went to charge it it would charge VERY SLOW...I finally isolated the issue to light manager....I uninstalled it and reinstalled and it has been fine ever since. The Note 2 for me now charges faster than any device I have ever had.

Hi,
This is what I have found. Sometimes when the microusb end is plugged into the phone that the phone charges at usb rate instead of ac which is wall outlet. I only have this problem with a standard usb cable in the car. Will change it soon but. What you can do after you plug in the microusb into the phone goto settings then battery and see how the phone sees the charging its getting. It will say either usb or ac. Ac is full charge rate usb is much slower since usb like off a pc or laptop has a lower output to your phone.
If you see it takes more than 3 hours to charge your phone and it says ac in settings then you definitely have a problem with either the charger, usb cable or phone.
Thanks,
Bryan
If you're using the cable and charger that came with the phone, you have a problem. Based on what you reported, I'd say you're using a 1A or less charger.

[Q] Sometimes my battery won't charge

Hey, I have been having problem with my phone for the past 2 weeks in terms of charging it. Sometimes it charges when I plug it in to a charger and the next day when I plug it again, the red light lights indicating it is charging but it really doesn't. So when I plug it in to a different wall outlet, it charges and when I do the same the next day it doesn't. Not until a switch a wall outlet. I don't really know what could the problem be, I have tried a htc charger and a third party charger, both are giving me the same results. I even flashed different ROMS and KERNELS to see if the problem resolves but it doesn't. Please I don't know what the problem might be, I mean the red light even turns on, but sometimes it charges and sometimes doesn't.
When it does not charge even after charging it a couple of hours, note the current battery level then restart the phone and take a look at battery meter again, it should indicate it correctly. Something similar happened to me due to a bad battery.
I've done that, but it doesn't change. For example last night I used my phone till 6 percent, put it on charge, woke up this morning and saw that it was dead. This happened before too but I didn't completely use my phone till 6 percent, usually around 20 and it just wouldn't charge. So I would have to move to a different wall outlet to charge it.
maybe your battery has gone bad ? o.0 try a new battery
Yea I suppose that is the only option I have left . Thanks for helping

Any answer may apply to this question doesn't matter if you're right or wrong, but what if its not the battery? could it be the pin inside my phone that maybe messed even though the red light turns on?
