I've been charging this sucker (it's off, never been turned on) for about 3 hours now. At first, it was getting warm from charging, now it's stone cold. But the stupid orange light won't go away.
How long did you charge yours?
Mine was completely dead upon arrival, as was another posters. He said his charged full in about 3 hours, mine is still charging, and I'm about 2 and 1/2 hours in with the phone off.
I charged mine for about 3 hours when i got it. never turned it on till it was fully charged...
with mostly setting up being done and a few camera shots i had mine o nthe charger roughly 3 hrs.. so ya the reports of 3 hrs sounds about right
when I got mine it was down to around 10%. Soon as the associate gave it to me I shut off all the auto synching and data connections, got it home and on the charger. Took about two and a half hours...maybe three. Though I've been finding it really holds a charge. Took it off to use it for 10 minutes to make a few calls and it still hadn't dropped a single percentage. Had I done that with the original EVO we'd be looking at 5-10% loss. The phone really screams!
If I remember the 3d took .3 days to charge past 99% lol mine did I know a few others did but I'm trying turning it off to see if I can get to 100%
Came to me at 50%

Heh, I've been waiting to unplug it before going to bed, but it's been sitting at 99% for quite awhile. I guess I'll check it in the morning. Got an extra hour of play time with it though!
I charged mine over night and this morning the orange light was blinking and the battery icon kept changing from the charging icon to the full icon. Wonder if it's because I'm using a 3rd party USB cord to charge with? Seems like a strange way to tell the user that the battery is fully charged....

Charged it with the supplied USB cable and got it to the full green light, no problem. Took about 3 hours.

Try to use the supplied charger when you can. The charger is 1 amp vs others which are lower (approx 500-750 ma). When I had my Thunderbolt, I had this same issue and someone pointed this out to me which seemed to fix this. It also charges it a little faster.

I don't see any suggestions for charging the Evo 3D for the first time. Anyone know whats best to do as far as not messing up my battery when I just got the phone?
You should be good with topping it off before u start using it if you want ur battery to be calibrated or whatever
^ yup... mine has been on the charger for about 30 minutes now... still havent powered it on yet.
Always wondered it that made a damned bit of difference in the long run.
Usually so anxious to dive into it I plug it in and dive.
I'm gonna condition it anyway that night.
Any thoughts?
Doesn't the battery already come fully charged?
They're usually about half charged...and the suggest you fully charge before using.
you can use it, but dont take it off charger until it is fully charged.
and no they dont come fully charged, the phones are partially charged.

i mean it would amaze me that if u just start using your phone, instead of fully recharging it once, would somehow ruin the battery for the rest if its life
dadoc how long did it take for yours to fully charge because i've had mine charging for an hour or more and no green light yet
fwiw, I've been charging it with the phone turned off for about an hour and 15 minutes and still no green light.
well no green light could be a GOOD thing
becuase the EVO used to give green light and it wasnt fully full
Took about 1.5 hours..... i used that BS charger that came with it so it took longer than expected

Mine has been charging now for about 2 hours and still red light. When I first plugged it in it was flashing red for about 5 minutes, so I'm assuming my battery was damn near dead. (have not turned it on and won't until it is fully charged)
I am charging it off my work computer's USB port since the cable won't reach an outlet from my desk so I know my charging will be slower than using an AC outlet

You might wanna charge it using ac power not the usb port....especially if the phone is turned off. If you need to sit it on the floor for it to reach or go look for a powerstrip or something. If its still red it likely not charging.

Lithium ion batteries don't need a precharge and also don't have a memory. Don't overcharge it or let it completely run out of charge. Charge whenever you want.

I noticed that while I have my Note charging from the wall, the battery will drain if I have the screen on or browse the internet. LTE coverage stops about 5 miles from my house, so I was browsing the internet on HSPA during this time. I tried wifi for a bit and it still drained. It will only charge when the screen is off, when I turn it back on the battery starts draining. Does anyone else experience this?
EDIT: It also takes forever to charge. I'm not as concerned with that as much right now though.

Yes mine does this too, i dont really care since my phone lasts 16+ hours i usually just start charging it when i go to sleep.
but yes i have this problem.
I just got my phone yesterday so I don't know how long the battery will last for me, but having it drain while plugged in is really annoying. I plug in my phone overnight and will read news and browse the internet until I fall asleep, so I don't want it to discharge while I'm doing that.
I'm testing the ipad charger we have, as it offers 2.1A instead of 1. If the phone can make use of the extra current it may help. Otherwise the charging circuitry is just what it is.

Please let me know your results. I will buy a new charger if it prevents this.
This does not happen with mine. I just ran a test - started at 82% on the wall charger. Currently tethering via wifi, doing heavy surfing. Also opened Opera and kept refreshing a page every 20-30 seconds to keep the screen on and to simulate surfing via the device itself. So doing double surfing. After about 10 minutes I was up to 84%.

My note charges while using it as well. The ipad charger likely won't make a difference unless the circuitry in the Note is different than the Galaxy Nexus as I tried an ipad charger with that and the current was so high it shut off from overheating..
Also your phone has software in it to prevent overcharging. What it does is it will charge to 100%, then even if plugged in run off battery power down to say, 95% and when it hits that lower threshold it will charge back up to 100% and so on. This is probably what you are seeing.

I've noticed something similar to this and attribute it to the dual core processor and movie-theatre-sized screen.
Actually, my Note takes longer to charge on any charger other than the one that came with the phone, unless I have it charging off a usb plug directly into my computer (for some reason). However, I will say that unless I'm doing something super data/GPS intensive like Google Nav, the battery will not continue to discharge while plugged in, so it's possible you might have a crap battery.
I would power cycle the thing a few more times and then if no different, try and swap out the battery.

Chalk me up on the list for those that have draining batteries while being charged. I don't even have to be doing anything on the phone except making a phone call... and it will drain.
I have a little update to my problem. Instead of using the cable that came with the phone, I tried a 15ft cable from monoprice that I had laying around. Now the phone charges when in use, and chargers much quicker than it did with the Samsung cable. So I am happy now.
I am having the same issue. It takes more than 15 hours to fully charge, then only get about 6 hours of usage. It will also drain if plugged in and I am using it with the screen on. This should not be happening. I believe that the battery is defective. If there is no fix for this, I am going to exchange mine. I read about the outstanding battery life on this thing and I want it! I was tired of getting only 6 hours on my Dell Streak and paid full price for the Note hoping to get at least 10-12hrs. I can't even get the thing to fully charge.

If you're using the stock charger and cable, something is wrong. Period. It takes maybe 5-6 hours to charge from nearly flat, probably less.

Using the stock charger plugged into a wall outlet? Or charging from a USB cable plugged into a computer?
in my experience since I got my note a month ago, different usb cables seem to vary in charging speed, even using the same usb port on my computer or the wallwart. I know that prob makes no sense and i can't explain it, but I have a cable that has those rf chokes on each end, and it is thicker than most cables, seems to carry current better or something. I am charging from a usb3 port on my desktop, and have fast charge turned on so that may be affecting it.
I can use my phone, while charging and I gain 1% about every 5 minuets.

My phone dropped to 7% battery. I let it charge for an hour with airplane mode on and it was at 4% battery. The orange light was on the whole time meaning it was charging. I then turned it off, took the battery out and it went to 13% battery. Soon it went back to 4%. I let it charge again for 2 hours this time and it hadn't moved at all and was still at 4%. I then swapped the stock battery for one from China. It started with 60% battery and after a half hour of charging it went to 54%. Why does my battery drain while it charges? I don't even use it when it's charging so I have no idea why it's draining. I'm running stock ics but it's rooted with 4ext. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Charge with AC not through an USB plugged to your computer. Your phone is using more battery than the USB port can provide. If you plug it in through the normal AC charger, it should be fine, as it gives out 1.0A, while USB ports typically give out anywhere between 200 to 500mA (at its absolute maximum).
I am using the ac. That message even appears when I use the ac.
Have you tried turning it of and charging?
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda app-developers app
I have tried that and it only turns on to what the battery was at before. As I typed this I went from 54% to 21% in about 10 minutes. This is really starting to piss me off. My phone cannot hold a charge. My motorola from 8 years ago could at least hold a charge. This is ridiculous. Thanks so far for the help.
Are you using the factory Amaze Cord to charge your phone?
My factory amaze cord stopped charging via ac. I had it plugged into the wall and it would say usb charging so I'm using a different kind of cord. I've never had a problem using my sisters blackberry cord plugged into the usb converter to ac.
Maybe....just maybe...your devices charging port is defected...
I have some charger from China that goes from the wall straight to my phone without using that charging port and it doesn't charge it either.
China should only be used for one thing...Chinese People
I tried another one of my batteries that had a 60% charge. Within 10 minutes the battery was dead. I have it charging and the orange led is flashing. I waited 20 minutes and tried turning it on. After several presses of the power button it finally turns on. As soon as it gets to the home screen the low battery sound beeps and it shuts down. Seriously what am I supposed to do? This is getting ridiculous.
Thanks.
Have you looked into doing a warranty exchange...
sent from my NRGized Amaze,

I have not. This has only happened 3 times or so since I got it a week or so after launch. I didn't suspect it to be a hardware problem. I think the person who suggested the bad power port was correct because my Chinese charger charged it full perfectly and it's been good. It just has to be held at a certain angle to charge. I'm going to go to Telus and try and get a new power port and see, maybe I could get an exchange. I have it rooted though, so would I have to unroot it get the exchange?
Thanks.
Step one, dim the phones lighting.
Then check to see if there's an app keeping the phone awake causing it to drain battery while charging,
If its not an app keeping it awake then you my friend are one of the unlucky owners of this picky phone...

Hey, I have been having problem with my phone for the past 2 weeks in terms of charging it. Sometimes it charges when I plug it in to a charger and the next day when I plug it again, the red light lights indicating it is charging but it really doesn't. So when I plug it in to a different wall outlet, it charges and when I do the same the next day it doesn't. Not until a switch a wall outlet. I don't really know what could the problem be, I have tried a htc charger and a third party charger, both are giving me the same results. I even flashed different ROMS and KERNELS to see if the problem resolves but it doesn't. Please I don't know what the problem might be, I mean the red light even turns on, but sometimes it charges and sometimes doesn't.
When it does not charge even after charging it a couple of hours, note the current battery level then restart the phone and take a look at battery meter again, it should indicate it correctly. Something similar happened to me due to a bad battery.
I've done that, but it doesn't change. For example last night I used my phone till 6 percent, put it on charge, woke up this morning and saw that it was dead. This happened before too but I didn't completely use my phone till 6 percent, usually around 20 and it just wouldn't charge. So I would have to move to a different wall outlet to charge it.
maybe your battery has gone bad ? o.0 try a new battery
Yea I suppose that is the only option I have left . Thanks for helping

Any answer may apply to this question doesn't matter if you're right or wrong, but what if its not the battery? could it be the pin inside my phone that maybe messed even though the red light turns on?
Hello XDA I was just wondering if anyone else has any sort of anomalies in their promotional charging cradle for instance I was charging 1 battery in there and it was still red indicating still need of charge and my other battery in the device was around 75% so I wanted to switch them fast charging saving time. Once the battery in my phone it was at 100%. Also once it turned green before I was going to bed so I unplugged it and in the morning I switched them and the battery from the cradle once I put it in had 13%.
Anyone, anything to you?

Having same exact issues with both of mine all of the sudden.
Having the same exact issue. The cradle was all good until a few months ago.
After putting an externally charged battery in the phone I often had the problem that it was only at 5% or something like that. After rebooting und once pulling the battery it was at 100%. So the battery is fully charged but the phone doesn't recognize it. My workaround: When changing batteries I pull the empty one, wait about ten seconds, put the full one in, pull it again after a few seconds and put it back in the phone after some seconds and boot the phone. Doing it this way leads me to a phone showing 100% battery.

Hmm, that's weird. I'm having this issue as well so I'll have to try this and see what happens. Thought for certain is was charging cradle though and not the phone misreading the battery simply because it worked fine for like 6 months.
