[Q] Random freeze, mega drain!!! 60%>0% in 15 minutes - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
My phone freezes randomly, it suddenly starts up driving mode, and Vlingo talk.
After that it freezes and drains the battery form 60% to 0% in like 15 minutes.
Deleted all data, changed rom, firmware and kernel but it still keeps freezing
Anyone knows how to get rid of this problem?
Cant return the phone anymore i think because of flashing.
thanks in advance

have you reset the download counter with a usb download jig? if not buy 1 and reset it, make sure stock firmware is flashed before.
your problem seems more than just software if it drains that fast, it may even be a faulty battery, But i would flash stock and reset download counter with a jig and send it off,
just a thought have u a memory card? ifso have you tryed useing the device without it?

I have the exact same problem as you, today I will be enforcing a replacement under the Sale and Supply of Goods Act, 1994
S 14 (2) (B) states that satisfactory quality includes the following:
Fitness for the purpose
Appearance and finish including any relevant packaging
Freedom from minor defects
Safety and durability
It has no freedom from minor defects or is it fit for purpose, so I expect a replacement.

I think that is my only option,i have try'd so many things now.
I don't have a memory card in my phone so that's not it.good thought anyway
But the battery is not the problem, cause I was on the latest official firmware and battery lasted for almost 24 hours seems pretty resaneble to me.
Thanks allot

Boot problem. Would appreciate any advice

I recently had a problem with my XDA 1. It started running VERY VERY slowly (kind of like a computer that was infected with 10000 spyware programs). The battery was constantly showing that it was going to shutdown but yet seemed to still operate.
I tried doing a backup to SD Card while it was on the cradle, yet after about 4 minutes of usage it would automatically soft reset - interrupting the backup.
So i thought stuff it, i don't care about the data i will just do a hard reset. Now, after doing the hard reset i can't even get it to turn on. The O2 Screen comes up and the light flashes on and off every few seconds. It does this for about 45 seconds then switches off again.
Does it sound like the mainboard is gone? Could it just be the battery? Are there any home repairs ideas? I do have a second xda i can pull apart if i must to test what is wrong with this one.
Thanks.
Adrian
boot problem
if a desktop pc were to exhibit these sort of problems then i would definitely suspect a motherboard problem. if you are still under warranty then straight back to the store is the place for you. if not then scour the forums for solutions fixes or suggestions, there are some very experienced people on here - not me -
ian
since it's still under warrenty I strongly advice to replace it or at least to get it repaired by the center ... but if you tend to feel it's a challenge for you to fix it your self, then you may do the following to eleminate the possibility of S/W problem ...
1. Flash the ROM with a new OS image. This should solve any ROM problem.
2. Make sure you didn't turn on the "Calib/Debug" option in the GSM menu of the boot loader.
BTW, was the radio part OK while having this problem ?
actually its not under warranty, i bought it off a friend when he upgraded to his XDA II. Im not sure what the radio version was, i jsut put any details in there because i couldnt boot to find out what it was at.
Can you flash the rom without having to boot it up? Are there the instructions on how to do it on this site?
Thanks.

[Q]My s2 powered off it self

the phone powered off it self until i pressed the power button to turn on again. i noticed this often happened when i put in my pocket for a while. but when i put it on table over night it didn't happen.
roms that i tried that had the same problem:
batista 3.7++
lightening 3+,6+
cognition 1.4+
apps that i tried uninstalled but no avail:
-setcpu
-daemon control(batista rom)
-juice defender
is it due to motherboard issue? appreciate your advice. thanks.
have u tired wiping data and dalvik cache before installing any rom?

thanks, yes, i in fact wiped all and even install stock rom before any mod roms. and i also changed few kernels(stock, nipo, CF..)but still the same..
now trying to use kh4 stock rom and see..
So the this issue s only occurring when the phone is in your pocket and never when out of your pocket.
this happens to my Phone as well.. its kinda random...
sometimes when am listening to music and sometimes when its just on standby
for example it just restarted which reminded me to search for this error...
few days ago it was on standby and had shut itself down and the battery was completely drained after 5 hours without anything on.

yes, found it only happens when putting in my pocket. when charging over night or putting on my work desk, it didn't happen.
and yes, it happened few times when it turned off it self, it lost about 10% to 20% battery in just few minutes... the phone was warm when it happened. that was why i took out to check and found it already powered off..

What firmware you have? I run on XXKH3 for 3 days (previously on XXKG3 for 2 weeks), no boot issues.

all happened to shut down it self. so i guess it is not rom issue..
I would try a stock ROM for a week, just to be safe (no apps/tweaks/kernel, etc., really stock). I'm pretty sure a recent stock ROM will not give you issues, I would not worry about the hardware.

thanks for your advice, will try stock rom then
Ya, do that... just to see what is going on.
More on the technical side, the screen needs minimum 500Mhz to get out of Sleep Mode. Some custom Rom's use a low voltage or "underclock" feature that reduces the power consumption but also the number of CPU steps. That is what makes your phone crash and reboot randomly.
Once you put the stock ROM, do a sdcard wipe (if you use one), just to be safe. It should take several hours, so do it over the night. Personally I would not use an external sdcard during the one week test, just be sure.
You could also have a RAM (hardware) issue, ya. But 99% of the time is related to software. Bad memory degrades fast so you will see your random reboots pop at a faster frequency. If you did all the above and still experience random reboots, run adb logcat to see what is going on at that specific moment. If you get error codes like:
Code:
code 1 (SEGV_MAPERR), fault addr 00000000
you are dealing with bad memory unfortunately and need to service your phone.

I also heard that some people had bad battery contacts on their S2. Clean them with some audio head tape cleaner and cotton swabs, than make sure the contacts are proper... it should eliminate this possibility. In a way, it makes sense since you move a lot with your phone in your pocket.

However, I have a feeling this is your problem, since the phone restarts in your pocket only. Don't smack it like the guy did, heh. Go easier, think like it is your girlfriend...
Just clean the battery contacts and make sure they touch properly.
is there a guide on how to install Stock ROM back on? cant find any...
how can i root my sgs2...?
it also happened to my phone. so i brought it back to the store where i purchased it and told them that it was shutting down randomly when i put it in my pocket. after 15 days of waiting i called them for follow up because they told me it will take 7-10 working days. they told me that the phone never shut down in the service center. what can i do about it? i don't know how to flash or root. this is my first android phone.
I have finally found a solution... installed XXKH3 FW stock, not rooted yet, and installed an application from the android market called Load Monitor
Code:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.landak.loadmon
and enabled only Add Notifications, only notify high load, autostart and only screen on... seems to do the job, no battery drainage and most of all NO SOD (Sleep Of Death) or restarts anymore
If you still have problems try checkin wake lock from the options of the app...
Hope it helps

The phone did not rebooted in their store because they did not move it, you have a bad battery contact that can be fixed easy.

SGS2 bricked while booting up.

Well, first of all, I should start by greeting the community, as this is my first post. So, yeah, hey everybody, been reading the forum for quite a while now, and it's been of a great help
Now, to the problem - this morning I noticed that my sgs2 had turned itself off. I didn't suspect the phone to be bricked or something as this happens from time to time when using custom roms. I tried turning it back on, it booted up, showed my kernels logo (DorimanX, not sure for the version though), so I put my phone in my pocket. After half an hour or so, I wanted to make a call, but I noticed that my sgs2 still hadn't booted up. So I tried restarting my phone using the power button, but instead of restarting it just turned off and I hadn't been able to turn it on since - it's bricked
I've heard of phones getting bricked while flashing a new rom or kernel, but never had I thought it could happen on simply booting up...
I did some research on bricked SGS2 and here's what I have done so far:
I've tried booting up in recovery/download modes, but that doesnt work.
I've tried soft/hard resetting my phone - still no luck.
I've also tried making an USB Jig, didn't work though. I'm not quite sure if my self-made jig works in the first place, as I did mess up the micro usb connector pretty bad while soldering resistors to pins. I'll try that one again with a different jack later and will keep you updated on weather it worked or not.
So, my question is, if my second try at making a USB Jig fails, is JTagging my only chance on reviving the phone? I guess that a MOBO change would probably help.
Another question is, if JTagging is my only chance, wouldn't it be easyer to just replace the bricked NAND chip? Then again, even though I have all kinds of soldering equipment accessible and also have the skills to do it, I have no idea where it's located on the mobo... Some info on that would also be much appreciated.
I havent flashed a new rom for quite a while now, last time I did it was when the latest version of Resurrection Remix was released.
My CPU wasn't overclocked - it was underclocked to 1GHz.
I was using DorimanX kernel.
Thanks in advance

order an usb jig and try. If it does not work send it to a repair center
Very similar happened to me a couple of days ago. Sgs2 crashed and wouldn't boot. I was also running dorimanx kernel, under clocked at 1ghz.
Originally I managed to get to download mode (not recovery mode). Kernels wouldn't flash via odin. I also tried using samsung kies to flash stock without success.
I tried the solution for nand bricked phones in this forum, however, this appears to have hard bricked the phone, since it failed to flash and now the phone does nothing (other than get hot when it is plugged in.) Nothing shows on screen. The PC does not recognise the device.
None of the threads I've read seem to offer a solution to this - any ideas? I guess I need to try a service centre, but thought I'd mention since I had same configuration as jankanolv, which of course may just be a coincidence...

Sounds familliar, lol. Anyways, did you use USB Jig to get to download mode? Or you just managed to boot it up on it's own?
I am really confused right now, because I'm pretty sure this can't be a hard brick as nothing has went wrong while flashing something on the device - it just bricked itself...
I've just get in the forum a few minutes ago only to find somoene with this symptoms, and i wasn't in here for too long and voilá...
Since yesterday my SGII, with no problems to this date, went in reboot mode for a few times.
I have no clue what is going on, but im sure something is.
i'll wait to see if theres anyone else complaining about it.
cheers
Hmm... Looks like a lot of people are getting this "brick" lately.
Maybe we all used some kind of app that bricked the phone on bootup?
Well, I tried to make another Jig, didn't work... This time though, I screwed my resitors up...
Another thing - is it really relevant to have exactly 301kOhm resistance between pins 4 and 5? As far as I know, it just kind of short circuits some pins on MOBO, which tells the phone to boot up in download mode. But I might be wrong...
Btw, sorry for the double post.
Same Problem
Hi,
I just face the same problem today,
now my S2 not working and just heat up.
this only happened after the original update done to my S2 - Android 4.1.2 - 2 days ago.
any help please
heat up....near the rear camera heat up?
Sent from the little guy
Mine gets hot near the camera. Nothing shows on screen.
In answer to jankanolv's questions:
- originally I could get to download mode via pressing home/power/volume down. (Not any more following failed flash). I've not tried a USB jig.
- my crash which started the situation occurred while I was listening to tune in radio pro app.
Well guys....near camera heating + no boot/dl/recovery = claim warranty saying that you factory reset the phone, 4.0.4 was laggy.
Sent from the little guy
was going to post a thread asking for help for what appears to be a similar problem
mine got stuck in a bootloop after pulling the battery, tried flashing new software in recovery then tried through odin but kept failing, now its bricked.
does nothing, wont go into either download or recovery mode so looks like its off to the service centre with it.

Yessss! good to know I'm not the only one facing this issue.
I posted a thread about this yesterday but it is all the way down in page 3 already:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192996
I tapped on the "sync" toggle on the notification shade and my phone just turned itself off.
Recovery and download mode were accessible though.
Thanks for the help.
I went to Samsung to get them to fix based on the factory reset while on stock 4.04 premise, but they were having none of it, and wanted to charge me to investigate the problem. Once out of warranty period, it seems it doesn't matter if their software can brick your phone!
I found a local phone fixing service in Hong Kong which investigated, diagnosed as a motherboard failure (which I suspect my problem genuinely was given how firmware flashes were failing), and replaced + fitted for 700hkd, (approx 90usd). The guy did it in front of me within 10 mins. "Andy Telecom" in Mongkok, on +852 9237 9237 in case someone else has the same issue locally.
Well, outta warranty...that's another story. You only get 1-2 years to brick your device
Glad you had it fixed for 90 bucks, some service centers charge around 150.
Sent from the little guy
Well, I finally managed to make a working USB Jig, tried it on Galaxy Ace, worked like a charm.
What confuses me right now, is that my sgs2 has drained all the battery, even though it was switched off for about 2 days. I'm charging the device right now, and I will keep you updated on weather my jig works..
Sorry for double-posting again on an old thread, just wanted to let you guys know - I took the phone to warranty service and they changed the mobo. I didn't have to pay anything and everything is working normally. Of course all data on sd card is now lost for good, lol.
So if you hard brick your device so badly it even won't respond to usb jig and you still have your warranty active, don't bother trying to revive your phone - just take it to warranty service
I guess they couldn't see the odin download count so they cant void my warranty, he he he ]

[Q] Galaxy s2 soft bricked with low storage

Alright then. Description of my problem first I guess. I was not at home and running out of battery on my S2, but play store asked me to update some application so I agreed. After this I got the message that my phones internaly storage was running low, and keep in mind that I had near to no battery life (like 5%) and was not near any sort of charge point. I tried to access the applications page, to delete some apps that I never used and when I did my phone randomly and crazily got stuck and switched off. I'm assuming it somehow drained the 5% battery life I had left.
I got home thinking I could just switch on my phone and delete some applications that I wasn't using...that was 2 days ago...I can't even get past the samsung splash screen. It goes on a horrible boot loop and I've just about tried everything apart from hard resetting and I don't want to do that as I haven't backed my phone up recently...
If anyone knows any other methods, could you please please help? I would really appreciate it if I could keep my files and just enter my phone to delete a couple applications...which I'm assuming is the problem.

yay for quick replies. I have tried cold booting, and soft resetting...I also went into recovery and cleared the cache partition to see if it would help and so far nothing... I have absolutely no idea what firmware I have and I have no idea how to check. I never tried to root my phone or install other roms.
OK so if you have no idea what firmware you was on don't reset Cuz if you was on 4.0.4 kiss good by to your phone. Was it ICS or jb? Do you know this? Pull battery out leave for a bit "5 mins" and try again. If that don't work and your not sure on firmware you need Odin to replace firmware yes data will be lost. Can you get to download mode?

My tab s3 keep restarting and freezing by itself

Hello everyone
I have Samsung Tab S3 since it's release in 2017 .. and it was a very nice tab till a couple months ago ..
It started restarting by itself .. and it happenes always when I'm not using it or when I'm pausing a video ..
And when I leave it for a couple hours i find out that it's turned off and it can't be turned on till I hard restart it ..
I tried :
Emptying the battery to the end then recharge and didn't work.
Removing SD card and didn't work.
Entering safe mode and still restarted.
Wipe cash partition didn't work.
Factory reset and didn't work.
And finally flash stock ROM with Odin without rooting .. problem not solved
When I put the tab on power saver the restarting takes so much longer to happen ..
Could it be a hardware related thing? Or a battery thing?
Thank you in advanced for your help
*Edit 1 (problem fixed) : I rooted my tablet and installed Kernel Auditor app and changed the governor to Userspace and set the minimum frequency of the CPU to 422 instead of 307 and made the app do the settings change on boot . After this it had not restarted for 3 days.
*Edit 2 lately I flashed lineageOS unofficial 18.1 android 11 into the tablet and edited the big clusters only to interval governor while keeping the small ones with blue schedule. My tablet now is working like a charm with no issue.
Has the battery SOT time noticeably decreased?
If below 80% of its original capacity it's time to replace it.
Any swelling is a battery failure, replace asap.
Changes in charging behavior could indicate a failure as well.
Has it been dropped or exposed to moisture? You see where this is going... mobos can also randomly fail.
Does it happen in safe mode?
Check it to rule out 3rd party apps.
Original rom, don't update the system apps, all power management should be disabled.
Pull SD card if it has one for now before reload.

*After the restarting it gets stuck and shuts down and you have to turn it on by (down+power), if you turn it on immediately you have the same battery percentage but if I let it through the night and force turning it on the battery is decreased alot, it looks like when the tab is off after the freezing and restarting it is consuming alot of battery even if it's off.
*I tried the safe mode it still restarts
*I went to the beach 6 months ago and it stopped charging because of the moisture for about a week then it got back to its normal state
*I noticed that When I boot into (downloading mode) or (recovery mode) it stays on for days and doesn't restart or freeze
If you got salt water in it, it's already dead.
Needs to be pulled apart and inspected for corrosion damage. Sorry...

You mean the motherboard or the battery is dead ?
If the mobo got salt water on it or even water in it can destroy it. Current flow greatly accelerates corrosion.
The tab needs be dissembled*, dried and inspected for damage especially where there's high current flow and exposed conductors.
Sooner is better...
*pull battery connector asap

My tablet turns off by itself
Good evening. As the title says, my SM-T820 turns off randomly. I've changed the battery and installed several official firmwares with no luck so I don't know what else I could try, if anybody has any idea please tell me. Thank you so much Kind...

it will still work but the button will stop working .. after all you will get a 2017 tablet to work with Android 11 with an amazing speed and without all that bloatware that were slowing the device. And if you didn't like it you can go back to the stock rom whenever you want .

It worked has not crashed yet and I found that s-pen button thing annoying anyway so thanks again for the help
I sometimes find my S3 has shut down and requires a long press of the power button to boot up. I have not determined the cause. I wonder if just root will allow deleting enough bloatware to make a difference
