[Q] New Streak owner simple quick q's - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Read the 'few questions' (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995249) one but didn't answer my simple ones. As an EVO (ValPak ROM) and ViewSonic GTAB (bottle of smoke ROM) I am not afraid to get dirty, but I just got a new 7' Streak and just checking on the following;
Comparing to the gtab with the 1.1 NVflash, does this also have to be flashed to the new 1.2 branch or is that viewsonic only.
What ROM's are available as I don't see many out there, and what is the preferred?
It's charging so I haven't even turned it on yet, but if it's anything like the gtab I will have to flash it or throw it out the window Since I love my XDA, figured I would see what you guys are using as the primary ROM as even VealPak wasn't listed here for the EVO but is great, so maybe someone has .02 on what's best for this hardware!
Thanks, looking forward to learning this device now!

A page of Streak related links to get you started.
Use the forum search or google and you'll find plenty of info out there.
Welcome to the Streak.

And check out the Streak 7 forum.
The 5" and the 7" are two completely different animals and don't share any ROMs or processes when it comes to flashing.

Dell Streak Devs? Any?

Do we have any devs over here?
At all?
Its pretty damn quiet?
My guess is that since it's only out in the UK at the moment, development won't really kick off until it gets it's american release.
Although Paul at Modaco has already rooted the phone so maybe there's the odd developer trying to do stuff.
I'm more a tinkerer than a dev, but I'm having a play with quite a lot of stuff.
As this is my first full blown android I'm learning quickly (I do have a lot of experience with linux so it's not that alien).
first up for me is to work out if the wifi chip supports "N" like the n1
tinkerer, dev, whatever ... your more experienced than any of us...
how come you came to the streak
I wonder if it will support 720p video recording like the Incredible?
I love big screen devices... I've always missed my htc advantage.
And frankly this is a geeks ultimate device... So much potential for tweaking and some bugs to fix, how could I resist
Its so far left field that I can't help but see it become a design classic
And it works like a computer! I even love the Dell shell that makes it work like a desktop linux... That's one in the eye for Ms and their moronic new os.
When I get the hang of it at bit more hopefully I can start to push it.. Just starting to work through adb shell..
May extract that latest update to see what's new and what they are doing, still far to much I don't understand. Its quite fun being a noob all over again and doing lots of reading and discovering some great websites.
Maybe we should have a thread of all the various articles/ websites that people find useful relative to the streak and developing for android in relation to it.

Good to see you in here fards
Like you I love my large screen devices which is why I went for the HD2. I cook my own roms using the latest sys and software with the amazing tools provided in these forums.
I would never consider myself a pro chef more like I can cook microwave meals hehe. Tools made by bepe and ervius etc do all the hard work for me
I ordered my unlocked dell streak direct from dell UK yesterday with a delivery date of the 13th of July. Its going to feel great getting that 5" screen and I cant wait to begin tinkering. I think the first step will be rooting it, recovery image then having a play about with the modoco kitchen.
Second thing to do will be to get swype installed\cooked in as I CANNOT live without that, I am so used to it. I missed out on the open beta so hopefully cant find the files floating around the web somewhere ;-)
Me too - ive got a hd2 (now for sale if anyone wants it) - my streak will be here tomorrow....i couldnt wait (got an o2 locked one but ive got a rebel sim card on the way as well)- going to florida in 6 weeks time so i may pick up a couple of unlocked ones while im there (i think theyll work out at about 280 quid english money...)
With the HD2 im kinda used to having the latest and greatest software but it looks like we're going to have to wait a little while for a 2.2 version....
Yeah, this part of the forum is a little on the quiet side...but good to see/hear some people are looking into cooking some roms!
At first glance, I wasnt too impressed with it...until I actually used the device...its awesome! This phone + 2.1/2.2 will be unstoppable.
Question for you; Are we waiting on Dell to release the kernel source for 2.1/2.2 so that we can build a custom 2.1/2.2 rom as the kernel for 1.6 wont work with 2.1/2.2? Or am I way off haha!
nope ur spot on we need a kernel for 2.x

Basics

I've been spending quite a lot of time reading up on android this last week, amongst playing with the streak obviously. .
I've found quite a lot of info about how stuff is done and development, quite a lot is particular to specific devices, but there's some great generic stuff about as well.
How about we have thread of info for people looking at developing for the streak, here and when there's enough/the wiki is back up we can transfer it to that one.
to start with here's a great guide on what makes your typical android rom
http://forum.androidcentral.com/hacking/6037-general-rom-faq.html#post35442
awsome ...
we definatly need something and we need more support...
i dont know where to start
cant port 2.1/2.2 without a kernel
and theres not much that can be done with the HEAVILY skinned ui

[Q] LINUX on the GTAB

Team,
has anyone tried this and had it work?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-962023.html
It talks about Ubu 10.1 with lxfe running on a phone, but several outside sourses have said that would make it usable by any android device
that sounds shaky, but when i followed the instructions, i didnt et ANY errors.
of course it wouldnt boot, at least waiting 10 minutes and i still saw the boot messages, so i figured that there IS hope, i just know i dont knoe enough to poke around myself.
anyone with suggestions, im all ears
help please
thanks
mindwave,
There have been people here working with ubuntu up through the latest Narwhal.
A couple of quick searches should turn up the threads.

I have this setup and running great on my gtab running vegan ginger.
butch,
i know there have been folks here working on them, but this one has 2 attractive features.
1) it runs soley from the SD card. I know some folks flash daily, but personally i really only want to re flash my tablet for a good reason.
2) its SIMPLE, Im in the midst of perforiming a MAJOR systems upgrade at my office PLUS raising a 5yo AND publishing 5 books, so for me, simple is awesome.
but i agree i think there are some folks here that have done some AMAZING work and I appreciate them all. matter of act I sa VS was selling GTABS for $279 yesterday on Amazon, and If i hadnt JUST biought the wife a NC I would have certainly ordered another one JUST to play with

What is that second link supposed to go to? It looks empty to me.
I use ubuntu as my daily driver, and think it'd be awesome to try on my gTab. I followed one of the guides that used the VNC method. It was neat, but also annoying and wasteful because it was running inside Android. So, I'm really interested in getting this other method working.

[Q] Where is TNT Lite v4something?

Maybe I'm missing something big, but did TNT Lite 4.x disappear? It seems like I had Roebeet's ROM a while back, but now there isn't like a mention of it anywhere, except someone somewhere mentioned a thread about it being retired (although I could not find that thread).
Am I completely inept at finding the past documentation I had used, or did something happen I'm not aware of? Seriously, I know I'm not here every day, but it seems strange that all signs of the rom have mysteriously disappeared.
Guess it's off to VEGAn-TAB.
Yep. You missed some drama. TNT Lite is still around, but has been retired in favor of a newer ROM based on a new development branch with a different bootloader. Do a google search on 'Mountain Laurel ROM' and you shall find it now hosted on another forum (aforementioned drama led Roebeet to relocate his ROMS). Forum rules forbid linking directly to that forum. You can also find TNT Lite hosted at that other site as well, if you want to stick with that.
I want to point out that even Mountain Laurel might be discontinued shortly. TnT Lite 4.4 was discontinued at the end of March. If you were going to switch to a brand new ROM I would suggest Brilliant Corners 1.2.1. It is based off Vegan and integrates the new 1.2 bootloader that people have been fighting about . It is made by the same developer, Roebeet, who made TnT Lite and Mountain Laurel. He is also developing a Honeycomb port to the G-Tablet which is in an alpha state currently. To find the firmware google
Code:
brilliant corners g tablet
and it will be the first link.
Thanks for the updates. Strange how the world goes.
I found myself in an interesting place, where after a force close loop I ended up going back to the default rom on one gtablet, and after trying HC alpha ended up bricking it by trying to load a 1.1 ROM (and then getting a total brick, not even birds when NV flash didn't work as advertised the first time; but no worries it worked the second time around).
If nothing else, I've read that from the crucible of conflict comes real innovation.

Looking to buy a nook tablet.

Hi everyone! For those that do not know I have been spearheading the cyanogenMod nook color project. I am looking for information on the custom firmware being developed here, whether we are developing Android 4.1 builds and whatnot.
I would like to know if there is any github repos on the nook tablet being maintained, and how kernel development is going. Would also like to know if anyone has the TI OMAP 4 drivers, sound codec drivers for this device. Would like to start rallying up support on this device as I have found out B&N is getting ready to release an updated nook tablet for B&N. Would like to see some development go towards the cyano boot loader and moved out of alpha development.
I think this project would be a great project to get up and going developing kernels for, if its not being done already, and I will try to use my influence on getting a proper nook tablet forum started down in cyanogenMod and start putting some time in Q&A and helping first time modders in there. I think having a proper forum down there would really help kick start this project.
I am really interested in development for the nook tablet because of the fact it uses the OMAP 4 dual layer processor with an included microSD card slot. Looking to pick me up one real soon if I can get a forum down in cyanogenMod started, and I am really persistent and think I can do so with the administrators. Persistence pays off.
Its also about self fulfilling prophecies. If you know you can do so and put it in writing, it most likely will happen for you. Just takes time and persistence.
Thank you and lets get this thread started! Feel free to PM me also.
Posted some threads and personal emails down in the cyanogenMod forums. Make sure to follow up guys. I know the older and serious developers would rather develop and not post chit chat comments in the forums but you do need to promote you work some.
Also leave some comments in the nook color forums complaining about no nook tablet support at cyanogenmod.
/thread.
I would love to see some extended development for CM10, even getting CM9 more stable would be a blessing. Most of the CM9 ROMs out there are Kindle ports rather than ones compiled specifically for the Nook.
That said, I'm pretty happy with what we do have for CM10. I'm using it and it works great, but development isn't progressing as fast here as it has been for other devices.
I'm not sure how to answer your questions about the processor and kernel, as I'm not a developer myself (yet), and I don't know if there are any github repos set up yet.
Hey sounds like your really wanting to do this and I'm super happy to see you help out I've always wanted honeycomb lol. Just a suggestion I have 3 roms for the nook tablet if you want to look at my work well not mine I port but i maintain over 13 roms. Its hard if you need anything just shoot me a pm and if you wanna Gtalk that's cool too. I suggest you get the 16gb if you do get the nook tablet only because of the nook tablet 8gb doesn't have some compatible roms. I will be building from source soon

I have a 16GB NookTablet I don't use very often, I would be willing to sell. I've got the original cable, charger, and box. $100 (shipping included; US only).
Nook Tablet CM10
--Update--
SOLD.
It looks like the developer <Rebellos> has a link to his github repo work in this thread here guys. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1480586&page=78
Yes, I would love to see this device take off with android builds. I will keep working on the cyanogenMod team and send them email once a week, will try to tweet cyanogen himself on twitter too. Do not want to spam too hard, lol or they might withhold development out of spite.
With that new B&N nook tablet coming out with them promoting that new touch screen that they are coming out with this 7 inch tablet might be the next big thing for those wanting maximum storage on a tab.
Going to start taking a look on some repos here in the next few weeks for this device.
