Tethering? - HTC EVO 3D

I'm confused. I understand that Sprint charges extra to allow customers to enable tethering via their cell phones. And I understand that many rooted phones can have apps installed and/or enabled to allow tethering without any extra charge. (Please correct me if any of that is inaccurate.)
So what happens when I turn on the wifi hotspot on my new phone? Will it fail because I don't have a "tethering" option on my plan? Will it work, but add $30 to my monthly bill? Or will something else happen.
Same with the USB tethering? How does that work? And get billed?
This 3vo is the first phone I've had that offered these options.

You can use USB tethering without paying the $30/month fee. That's just for WiFi tethering. If you try to use the WiFi hotspot, it simply will just not work. You will not be charged.

Both wired and wireless tethering fail with the message to contact Sprint to upgrade your plan.

What about pdanet? I haven't had time to try it out yet.

No, I'm not happy to see you, that's a Shooter in my pocket.

I was told the usb tethering would be free but when i try it it tells me its not included on my acct

This app is cheap and works great check it out here Also you CAN tether a wifi connection for free but not using mobile connection.

Tethering Roms
I found when you try to use either wireless or wired tethering build into the software, you get that error message and it also shuts down the 3g signal. You can still form an adhoc network wirelessly but no internet.
I'm looking for a Rom that unlocks the built in tethering. I just found Virusrom to do a good job. Any other roms you can recommend that just unlock the built in tethering functions?

Tethering for the evo3d

Ive seen a few people post info about pdanet in other threads when people are talking about rooting but didnt see a thread completely dedicated to it. If there is one and i missed it sorry. Iam like many others and a littke upset bout there being no wifi tethering but just happen to run across info in another thread about pdanet. For those who dont know if you download pdanet from the market and follow the instructions you can tether through your usb cable just fine. I posted this bc i did not know this until today and it saved me from adding tethering to my plan. Just hoping i can return the favor

I tried it today and it requires the sprint tethering package. Best to stick with easytether until root hits.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
im not sure but i think the easy tether is the same as pdanet. I just happen to see pdanet 1st. Only reason i would see payin sprint is if you absolutely must have wireless tethering

What about Bluetooth tethering, does that work also?
I didnt try the bluetooth but there was an option for it......my girlfriend recovered all her mp3s off our laptop today wirelessly im guessin thats what she used
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
wifi tether is nice i used it all the time. But untill we have root I would just use easytether, its free and it keeps you charged up while you are using it. I never seen the other one you are talking about so I cant say if easy is better. But like I said easy is free and its been out for a long time.
Im glad you didnt pay sprint for it
bmoreboy02 - I could be mistaken but that sounds more like Bluetooth file transfer using OBEX (whatever that means) than Bluetooth tethering aka Bluetooth DUN (Dial Up Networking).
The reason for my interest in PDAnet is that it includes a Bluetooth connection. I greatly prefer wireless connections (WiFi or Bluetooth) to wired connections (USB) even if wireless is slower. With a wired connection I'm always breaking connectors or cables, or losing the cable altogether. (Although I never owned a Palm Pre, I liked the idea of wireless charging to eliminate ALL cabling and connectors.) And the cost of PDAnet is minimal, not a factor for me.
Anyway I'd be glad to hear of any successes/failures with Bluetooth tethering on the EVO 3D, that's the one thing keeping me from ordering one now. (Yeah I suppose I could just buy one, try it out and return it if I don't like its capabilities...)
Yea im not 100% sure how she did it i also noticed the evo comes preloaded with a file transfer app so she mite of used that....also if its true pdanet refuses to help the devs on here ill probally delete it and get the easy tether. Either way just glad im not payin sprint lol.

For get what I said. I didn't read your post right. You can find a site on the web that has all the apps for free. I thought that was what you were talking about. Appplanet or something. No clue how I got the 2 mixed up sorry.

Doesnt the 3vo have built in USB Tethering?
Yes it has built in USB and WIFI but both need the tether plan add-on to work
Guess I got lucky.. I have the sprint sero plan and the built-in wifi tethering works great. If only I had 4g coverage near my house..

What did you do to get the built-in wifi to work? Im on the same plan, but it still says the tethering pkg is required.
Only draw backs w/ the free easytether is no chat and https sites.
What exzactly is the sero plan?

it's an employee referral plan. i'm not sure how you would go about getting it, but i used to have an employee plan working for a 3rd party dealer and after i quit they converted me over to this plan. it's $40/mo + $10 for 4g, gives you 500 min with unlim txt/data/gps/tether etc.

if you sign on to sprint.com, does it list "Phone As Modem" as one of your add-on's? if not, i guess that's something that just transitioned over from my employee plan as opposed to it being part of the sero plan
Does anyone know a way to tether the Evo3D to Nook Color running CM7 since you can't root the 3D yet.

Tried to use USB internet tether today and...

it didn't work?? It said:
Your account does not include Mobile Hotspot/USB tethering service. Please contact Sprint to enroll in a plan for this service.
You can still use the Hotspot app to create a local network.

Some have gotten barnacle to work. Wireless tether app wont work. FYI: Those are 2 different apps. I could not get barnacle to work.
All carriers block Android's native tethering abilities for obvious reasons. Why let you use a ridiculous amount of data for free when they can charge you for it?
If you want to wireless tether, simply root using this method(i take no credit for this root method): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1152101 and then install barnacle wifi tether from the market. It works 100% percent of the time

Install PDANet to get free usb tether.
I prefer Easytether, it automatically starts when you plug in the cable, as apposed to PDANet that requires pushing buttons.

Question - Tethering.

Hi, I have a stupid question about tethering... I have always used wireless tether for root from the market, but I have Ken's Alien rom, and im wondering since it has tethering, can I just use the mobile hotpot feature without fear of AT&T finding out and charging me?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
How easy is this question? Doesn't anyone know haha
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
Well i have read then at&t can generally find out but it is easier to be caught with an iphone I should know because I used to have an iphone 4 flash a c a tricks I say using an app which state that I can hide tethering.
Other ways of hiding your tethering include not using it for a long session
Thought I was caught using tethering on the iphone I still haven't been notified on my atrix
But the common consensus is that there is no real way to hide your tethering from at&t unless they really have a reason to look into your account
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Use Barnacle.............it works fine and is safer than using the APN for tethering.
http://szym.net/barnacle/
<edit> I prefer WiFi Tether, but it doesn't appear to work with 2.3.4............at least not for me.
<edit 2> Just realized WiFi Tether has been updated: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list.
This works with me now. You will get an access control error, but ignore that and you will be fine. Verified working on my laptop here at work. Got 3.5Mbps down and 1Mbps up which is usual dl/ul speed for me at work.
Yeah, wifi tether for root is working flawlessly, but it would be nice to just use mobile hotspot from the phone haha.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
Mobile hotspot worked for me. I did the sqlite edit and clicked on the mobile hotspot app and played around with netflix on my 3DS. I had at&t send me a text of my data usage and it still says unlimited. I would imagine if it didn't work they would have changed me over to a 4gb plan.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I did the entitlement check change and use the mobile hotspot which works great. Haven't had at&t say anything to me even when I used custom apn method before.

When I activate wireless tether in the notification bar next to the wireless tether icon the phones says tethering or hotspots active this doesn't mean im paying extra for it does it?

No the built-in app does not automagically sign you up for a tethering plan.

Correct....you are wrong. There is a Tethering & Hotspot section for USB or wifi tethering under Wireless & Networks (also available via the notification power widget if added).
As DroidTh3ory said, there are versions of Wireless Tether that work as well if you want some of it's features like mac filtering and such.

Tether question?

Is there a way to get 4g on tether.
I am rooted
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
Unfortunately for now the only way that I have found is to pay for the Sprint Mobile Hotspot. I was Fortunate enough to have been Grand Fathered into Unlimited Mobile Hotspot Data because I have been a customer since 1997 and was not to thrilled when I was told it was going down to 5GB per month. I called Sprint, ended up speaking with a Retentions Manager (Politely) and she took care of me and kept me at Unlimited Mobile Hotspot Data. I was really upset and let it be known I would take my 3 lines to Verizon.
I had it for FREE on my OG EVO but needed Mobile Hotspot when I moved over to the Photon.
mine works through open garden tether.
Perroype3 if your phone os rooted. You can use free tether hotspot wifi from your phone to laptop. Go head search wifi tether app from market. Even with 3G or 4G
Good luck

Give that a shot. I haven't tried it personally, so let me know if it works for you. Should, if not, I can link you to a couple other free ones I've found.
