i have a boost moblile phone with a ruined esn and only uses wifi
i installed sipdroid and signed up for pbxes built in to the app
www4.pbxes.com/index.php
it makes and gets calls free
no special steps for calls just do as you do and sips will take over
im not sure if google voice is needed but you should have it anyways
You might like GrooveIP, especially if you are using it over WiFi. It's a bit laggy overy 3G, but very good over WiFi. Much easier to use than sip and other voip options.
GrooveIP is $3.99 tho, i use sipgate with CSipSimple and GVcallback and it works just as well
I'm using GrooveIP only over wifi as well. What kind of battery life are you getting with having the wifi on all the time? I'm noticing roughly 5% battery level drop per hour (battery usage reports 48% from wifi). Just got the phone a couple days ago (it's the T-mobile one) and I'm just using the stock rom etc.
Csipsimple also works great with any sip account.

Ok so basically, I used to own the Samsung Alias and changed the wap settings and was able to get free wap on that phone, it was on Verizon network. So I was wondering if there was any way to do the same on this phone. Or some how make it connect though my home network when out on the go. As I use page plus for my service and they only offer 50mb of data or 20mb... As we all know that is easy to go though in one day with the apps that are available on this phone. Thanks
I don't think so. I believe you cam get free data through QNC, but i don't think Eris supports it. I. Also am on PP and have learned to love WiFi

I also use an Eris on PPC! Yay for wi-fi haha. I just use the 50mb for occasionally checking email, weather, news, etc when I'm out.
Is there some application that can monitor internet usage by application? I know 3G Watchdog does the job, but it only shows the global consumption and I want to see which apps are using my internet because sometimes I can see my internet being used but I don't know which app is using it.
Also can someone tell me how I can deactivate it and turn it on until I need it.
Thanks!!
Have a look at Call meter NG...

nice post...
Call Meter NG doesn't do the trick either
@OP If you find software that does that please let me know, coz that would be pretty awesome, using watchdog at the moment but dunno where the data is going.

This is the same as 3G Wathdog, just shows the total usage. I want one where you can see Internet usage by application.

Count what about GPS exactly?
Sent from my X10a using Tapatalk
GPS is never counted as data usage, it uses signal from GPS satellites, not the internet connection. However, if you are using Google Maps, the internet connection is used to download the maps.
3GW has not yet the capability of counting usage per application, but a "pro" version will in the near future, only for phones under Android 2.2+ because it's not technically feasible AFAIK with older versions of the OS.
Hey guys,
I really need per app counter especially now for my X10.
I have only a 200mb plan, but I don't ever do anything else on the internet except use Google Voice app to text(since I tend to text a bunch).
Anyways, first month that I had the phone my traffic got up to about 120mb, but that was because I browsed web etc (you know.. got a new toy and started to play with it type of thing), but after this month I installed counter and monitor it from AT&T's website too, and half-way through the month traffic got up to 140mb!
Now I have disabled background data once I noticed that, now I have enabled it but uninstalled Google Voice app, and gonna have to go without it for few days (which isn't that great) and see if it's it that's causing the problem.
The thing is that I need the app one way or the other, and second is that I want to know for sure what EXACTLY is using my traffic.
Any advice is welcome.

LAN Spy Monitor is excellent all-in-one Internet usage monitoring software, it works very well.
I have been using the WiFi connection at work with my Vibrant because I can usually only get Edge here. I setup a new SonicWall ViewPoint server today and noticed something very interesting in regards to bandwidth. My Vibrant has the highest amount of usage.
I don't stream anything to my Vibrant. I have my gmail and exchange synced but other than having it sit on my desk I don't do much with my phone (besides phone calls). As far as I can tell there have been no automatic updates from any market apps.
I'm using Nero B3 if that means anything. I have users who stream Pandora and Youtube all day and I find it very surprising that my phone is sucking up more bandwidth that they are.
Any thoughts or ideas as to why?
Download a system monitor from the Market and see what is using the net.
This has frustrated me to no end. Does anybody know if there is an app that will switch from HSPDA to 2g? Preferably one I can set to a schedule? The WiFi calling app is the only one that seems to do this flawlessly, however it requires a WiFi connection.
When I am at work I do not use my phone for anything except phone calls and my calendar, so I do not have any need for 4 or even 3g coverage... And my phone just drains battery trying to establish these connections.
I've tried using APNdroid but it just force closes my phone process.
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. I'm running elite sense 2.6 if that matters at all.

It would be great if there is some app to schedule 2g/3g.

Why not just do it manually? If not then maybe Locale? It's $10 but it may do what you are looking for.
Switchpro or extended controls has the option idk about a schedule though.
I use a Juicedefender/tasker combo to Control the 3g. I had to ROOT and flash CM to get it do it, but its made my life easier since I never remembered to turn 3g off when I went to work.
*EDIT: though it should be noted that the AOSP Helper that Juicedefender uses to toggle 3g doesn't seem to work on Cm7.03
Hi williecat316,
I just have installed Tasker and I would like to do the same kind of combo as you did with Juice Defender and Tasker. E.g. when I unlock the phone, stay in 2g, but use Juice Defender to start 3g if I am away from any known wifi spot AND if I launch lets say the browser or any connected app. Could you give more details about the way you configured Tasker on your phone?
Thanks
P.S. the 3G/2g swithing through Juice Defender works perfectly on my phone (via AOSP Helper of course) but I'd like to fine tune the way it switches between 2g and 3g thanks to Tasker.
I have problems with 2g... All incoming calls go to voice mail....
Somebody can help me?

Seriously, did you read the date on the last post.
Hi guys,
I am looking for an app that does *two* things:
1. Shuts off Wifi when I get out of wifi range; and
2. Automatically pings for a WiFi connection, but not so often that it drains the battery.
It would be even better if I could set the app to stop background syncing when Wifi is off.
Does anyone know of an app, or a combination of apps that might be able to do this?
The only thing I have found so far is Juice Defender Ultimate, but it seems like overkill to use that just for WiFi control.
Tasker or locale

Juice defender does a good job of it. Go for the paid version.

I would agree with dafoxs.. juice d... I may be over kill but it works and you can always use it for more than just wifi.

I got Tasker but I'm just too lazy to get it to do what I want. Maybe I should put some effort into it.
At any rate, I think I found what works, but it is a combo of three apps:
Auto WiFi On/Off by Impresk, which turns off WiFi when out of range and then you can set how often it pings (I chose every 15 minutes);
WifiKeepAlive by roys, which keeps WiFi on when it is still in range;
Wi-Fi Web Login by SysLynx. This auto-logs you in to those annoying hotspots where you have to click a button on a webpage to get access. It really smooths the process.
Have you tried the "AT&T Smart Wi-Fi" app as found on the Play market? Not sure if it is what you need or not. Decent ratings.
"AT&T Smart Wi-Fi connection manager is a free app that finds and auto-connects to available hotspots, maximizes battery life by only turning Wi-Fi on & off when needed"...etc.etc.

+1 for Tasker, but the free version of Llama would easily handle this.
There's also a interesting app called Geotasker, and its free

I use Juice Defender Ultimate for this and lots of other things. You can set it to learn your habbits. After a few days it knows that when your on the cell towers around yours house that you use wifi, but never anywhere else. So it begins turning wifi off untill it sees your cell towers again. Lots of other crazy stuff too. I had a semi-aggressive set up going and with listening to slacker too and from work (45-60 min each way) plus FB and such throughout the day on and off, I got over 24 hours. Its worth shot. Tasker does lots of cool stuff too. I just use JDU because its aimed at tailoring battery life to your needs.

I just had too many problems with Juice Defender; it was always cutting off my communication when I needed it.
