[Q] [q] noob alert!! - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok now that is out of the way.
I have Navionics Lake Maps loaded on my TB and would like to use my HP laptop
as a monitor while on the boat. Without getting lost and FRIED for posting this can anyone give me a simple yes/no if this can be done and if so just how?
Remember I"m a NOOOOOOOOOB.

The Thunderbolt doesn't have a TV out so unless there is an app that I'm not aware of then no you can't. Good Idea though.

Thanks, I guess I will have to spend$3000 for a gps unit that is the same size as laptop now

The thunderbolt supports DLNA.. I know there's an app in the market for it but I can't think of it :/
Sent from my ThunderBolt using XDA Premium App

Wouldnt it make sence to buy a program that would run those maps on your laptop? I am not exactly familiar with Navionics lake maps but if they are in standard format than you should be able to load the into some other program. If your laptop doesnt have have gps built-in then you can get a USB dongle. HERE is a link as an example. It might be a little cheaper to do it this way as opposed to buying a garmin or midland marine system. Just a thought.

[Q] Lapdock yes or no?

Hello all
I have my Atrix for about 3 months now, and from the beginning was thinking on buying the lapdock aswell but held myself due to its over expensive price (500$ for a damn docking!!!). Personally I don't see any reason to buy a docking for just 1 device in over 150$.
I've got now a chance to buy a semi-used one for 210$ (with a spare charger) and I wanted some consolt about it:
1) Is it possible to write office docs such as word and excell on it?
2) Is it possible to connect USB storage devices to it?
Since my primery uses for it will be as a working tool for docs writing (Thesis, reports and stuff), that can replace my aging laptop and instead of buying a notebook. will it be enough for my uses?
Can I use a Ubuntu hack to make it work as a Linux laptop?
Does it worth the 210$? or should I remain assertive on my "not over 150$" policy?
Much 10xs for all
I have had mine for a month now and in my opinion is OK but very limited. First there is the WIFI only unless you get the tethering plan or can get the hack to work (I have not yet got it to work). I use mine for remotely connecting to my Windows server but use a paid app Pocketcloud which works fine with the full screen mode on the lapdock although sizing the screen is sometimes a problem.
In answer to your questions:
1 If there is an app for Office docs which there is the answer is Yes but all the lapdock is really is a large screen for your phone, if you can do it on the phone you can do it on the lapdock.
2. I believe you can but it needs a hack
In my opinion it is not really yet a substitute for a laptop but if the hacks for Ubantu, tethering, etc are refined it may be in time but it in all honesty does not appear the be there yet.
As far as price, probably worth $200.00 to me to throw in the car so that I have a larger screen to log into my server when I am on the road etc without wireless, but that is a decision you would have to make.
You can buy it cheaper online, refurbished. It comes in very good working condition. My first one had a dead pixel, but AT&T let me bring it in and they gave me a new refurb'd.
They're 175 + tax online.
It says that flash drives and mice are supported. But I'm not sure. Haven't tried.
There's also a Google Docs app if you don't want to mod your WebTop. You can get OpenOffice if you use WebTop2SD, or the Debian mod.
Hey
first 10x to you both
Second, did I understand you correct? in webtop mod I cant use 3G? whats the point then? shouldnt it supposed to be a "laptop" with all the capabilities of the Atrix?
anyway, Sinful, can you give me a link for this price?
Another question, Does anyone knows if there are 10 intch screens with HDMI inlet? It ca be a cheap replacement for the lapdock....
You CAN connect with 3G with the regular phone interface which can be full screen on the lapdock. What you cannot do without the ATT tethering plan is to use the "full" Firefox browser on the lapdock.
For the most part it works fine just using the phone interface with the phone's browser in full screen mode.
I bought a refurb from lapdock from att and have been pleased with it. I have done the debian hack and the tethering hack to get firefox to work with my data plan. In reguards to your second question, I have hooked up external usb drives without problem. It gets mounted just fine and I am able to copy files without problem. Open Office also works well.
O.K
Thanks for the clarification.
Thats quite ****ty! Why would they do that?
Anyhow, since i'm not an AT&T costumer, I obviesly dont have the 'AT&T tethering program', so I guess it will be problematic for me to use the 3G.
I dont see what the use of the lapdock if I cant use my 3G, and I really dont want to use the phone browser in full mode to be able to do so.
Well, we will have to wait for the 2.3.4 official AT&T rom, and maybe they will enable this, or just wait for a skillful dev that will do that...
Which tethering hack did you use? I could not get mine to work. Thanks
AT&T thinks that using an external display of ANY form is considered tethering, even though its technically the same "computing device", just the output/input being redirected. I had a major "phone fight" with AT&Ts support, and am in talks with my lawyer if this actually enforceable. But yes, if you want to use the standard 3G web connectivity on your webtop's Firefox browser, AT&T requires you to get the 45 USD dataplan.
Alternatively you can try FIREFOX from the app market, and run it "fullscreen" through your Android GUI-"window".
As for office application that does Microsoft's office 2010 documents, I swear by QUICK OFFICE PRO. It does excel, word, PowerPoint and adobe PDF to create/edit.
I use my ATRIX as a semi desktop on the go, via Bluetooth keyboard and the ATRIX plugged into any TV or monitor that has a DVI (with HDMI-2-DVI adapter) or HDMI jack, and use the ATRIX itself as a mouse, since the touchscreen turns into a laptop-style -mousepad
There are mods out there to run an (almost) full Ubuntu, but last time I checked they had massive storage constraints trying to make it work all the way. Not sure if they overcome them by now.
But since the bootlaoder can be now unlocked, we probably will see soon some cool ROMS that allow us to use the ATRIX in a full Ubuntu environment.
Just hoping :-D

I have been using my atrix to do my general doc file typings. So far I am happy.
here are some stuff that you may need to know:
1. you can use an external drive as long as it is formatted FAT32.
2. you can use a cable mouse
3. look under development section and look up debian and ubuntu images for webtop. I found debian more reliable but ubuntu solution has more flexibility.
Using either solution you can install koffice or openoffice for your typing needs. If you simply want to type in text and do the formatting at a later time look up the "easy_v0.2.5-signed.zip" under debian solution. It will give you a on screen window for typing similar to notepad which is pretty nice.
There is also the webtop2sd project that is in beta. I suggest for it to come out of beta as it is not ready for general public yet.
I owned one , had hacked 3g tethering working and my opinion is NO not worth it unless you can get for 100-150 then its just OK
No. Id wait to see if there is any official webtop improvements....out of the box there is very little funvtionality.
Also, moto has said that there will be more accesories, and they have filed for a Tabdock....which may be much better if its basicly a xoom transformer. I think they released the lapdock first more as a webtop beta and to not have a tabdock compete with their zoom.

Ive got one, and the usb drive works fine, and i have a wireless mouse that seems to work just fine, it does what ever your phone does, and stores it on your phone, so... if you consider your phone your primary computer then this is for you.... i will be trading mine in on a laptop or at the very least a net book of some kind that will allow me to use financial software and other windows/mac essential software...
its a neat idea, but at this stage its gimmicky at best.
vonh
Sorry to dig this thread up, but I just got my Lapdock and in the last month it has matured a bit more, with lots of hacks to install several Linux distros allowing to install native Linux apps to the environment.
So far, I'm very pleased and glad to leave the 15.4" laptop at home.
This is what I use my Lapdock for:
1. Remote into my job Servers and Workstations through LogMeIn. I still don't jump into Cytrix yet.
2. Browse the web natively through full Firefox for research and entertainment.
3. Remotely manage my home's NAS
4. Download, display an manage files (.RAR, .ZIP, .APK, .DOC, .PPS, .XLS, .PDF, etc)
5. A few games here and there (like AngryBirds) but honestly, I prefer to play them on the phone itself due to multitouch.
6. I manage several personal and business websites and portals, and I can pretty much do all I need to accomplish this. (FTP, Edit, Upload, Download, Code, etc)
What's lacking on the Lapdock:
1. No front Webcam (no way to answer a video call from Google Voice, Skype, etc)
2. No fron Microphone (I constantly find myself yelling so people on the other side of the line can hear me, I now use a wired headset. Maybe a BT headset would be more comfortable though.)
3. No way to input international accented characters (I hope to find a way to hack a way to implement this.)
4. No accelerated video under Webtop?
My conclusion:
For me, I think that overall it's a great complement to my Atrix as long as you don't pay more than $200 for it.
Cheers!

[Q] printing should not cost $13

Why is printing a simple word doc so difficult. One should be able to print from polaris, file manager or other file viewing app. It is really frustrating that everything one can do for free on a pc costs a fortune on mobile devices. Don't get me wrong, there are a great deal of free apps that work great.
I was hoping to be able to use this tablet to its potential as a low powered computer yet, software really needs to improve for this to happen.
Anyway, just wanted to know if I am missing some freeware here. I will not buy printershare premium($13) and I can't find something similar for free. I know i could convert the format of the .doc file and use a less adequate program but i should not have to.
Srry I am new to touchscreen device's and I am mad because I have been trying to print one page for hours now. I know these are not replacements for computers but, they have the ability to do more.
Thanks
Try Google cloud print. You unfortunately need some sort of device directly connected to your printer to use it, from my understanding...
http://www.google.com/cloudprint/learn/
You can print for free. You just have to search for it. Can't give any more details. Google search will be the key to what you looking for. lol
Well the key is one thing that has left me searching for hours along with trying to find a better way to print. Current key is not on the net and older keys will not update, it tells me I did not purchase it.Cloud print is not really what I was going for but it may be my only choice(pointless because my printer does not have eprint and i might as well be printing from the laptop). I don't know if there is a way around key verification but, i have not been able to find a way as of yet.
have you tried searching your brand of printer and seeing if they have an app?
like hp has an app for printing to their printers. Probably similar things for other brands

edit. Never tried any of these apps myself. Just remember someone else mentioning them

What brand of printer? I have a HP and use the HP app and it works great as long as the printer and Tablet are on the same network. I think it will work with any printer as long as you're on the same network
PrintBot
Might be worth giving PrintBot a go. Looks like it doesn't require "enabled" printers and supports legacy printers.

So does that mean the printer needs to be a WiFi printer?
My printer (HP) is attached with a printer cable to a desktop computer that is on the same network as my laptop and Prime. Can I print from Prime to a this non-WiFi printer, that is cabled to my desktop on the same network?
Suggested programs for Prime?
Same goes for Epson. Their Epson iPrint app works great. They even supply you with an "epsonconnect" email address so you can print outside your network.

Sounds like Google cloud print will work for you - you install some software on your PC and then there are multiple apps you can install on your phone.
Deskjet 3050 j610 does not have eprint. I have tried hp eprint home and biz but it does not let me print. It sees my printer but for some reason can't print to it. BTW I really hate this app it is very evil and annoying.
The whole point of this is to not have to pick up the laptop when I need to print. I hardly use my families laptop and spend most of my time on the tp(takes some getting use to when coming from a desktop as primary computer). I almost have it to where the prime is just as good if not better than my old and busted desktop. It is certainly faster believe it or not(old amd sempron 1.9GHz single with 1gb of ram). Sad I know. Yet, i do miss that 100gb HDD. I plan to get an SD card when I get some spare cash. After that I am building myself an amd/asus/radeon super computer.
Kinda got off topic there.
Using eprint is just not practical in this case. Hooking up the laptop to my printer so I can print from my tp just sounds stupid to me, it would be faster just to print directly from the laptop.
I have tried everything here. If anyone can tell me what I am doing wrong it would be greatly appreciated!
Edit: tried iprint as well and it can't find my printer
Have you considered this with your printer ?
PrintBot
I tried PrintBot last night.
I have two printers patched into my router. An old LaserJet4 and a HP OfficeJet D Series. I configured Printbot and tried printing the test page to both printers.
The Laserjet4 started printing but it printed wierd characters and spooling sheets of paper so I believe it was sent the wrong printer control characters.
The OfficeJet D Series managed to print the test page successfully.
Didn't have time to print anything else.

I just printed a picture from my TFP using HP ePrint home and biz. I dont understand whats wrong with your setup it should work. If your prime sees the printer it should work. Try going in to the gallery than choose a pic or image than hit the share icon than more than hp and finally print. If that does not work your not registered with HP eprint service in that case register and Try again. HP should send a code through email to you that you put in the app or click a link so is instantly linked to your gmail account. Also I wasnt able to print directly from the app the first time I used it I had to go through the share icon. Good luck hope this helps

$13 is a lot but Printershare works flawlessly for me, even for Printing PDFs. Fortunately I got it as a free paid app of the day from Amazon. I would just pay the money if I needed/wanted to print a lot from my devices. Sometimes it will go on sale for like half price too...maybe wait until then.
Not sure if this is what your looking for but, I recently bought a Canon Pixma wireless printer because I was tired of going to my dessktop pc to print something and wanted to print directly from my laptop and the wife's. Well lo and behold, Canon has an app, that I installed on my Prime and Samsung Droid Charge , that works like a charm !

It is very strange that this works yet nothing else does. The only way it works is if you go through the gallery. I blame the fact that this program is evil. Also the print was very slow and poor quality but I'm not sure what to blame.

i should check Amazon more often.
I refuse to pay so much for printershare and I don't think I would need it that badly. It just really bothers me that there is not a preloaded application for this. I am just stubborn and would not print a quiz off from the laptop because I had already downloaded it to my tp. It would just be a convenience that's all.

Network Printing in Android 4/Prime tablet

Is this something that's still foreign to Google's OS? I don't know where to begin to find how to achieve this.

Look at printer share in the market
+1 to ^
Just setup my PrinterShare (amazon FAOTD a while back) and it works great on the TFP.
Printing on Android is very flaky at this point. there are number of apps that use Google Cloudprint technology but they seem to work sporadically. Sometimes docs will print right away, sometimes hours later, and sometimes not at all. Google needs to get this issue straightened out if they ever expect android to be taken seriously in the business world.
Look on the market for your printers manufacturer. For instance, I use a Brother printer. Well, Brother has an app for printing to the printer over your network and it works pretty Damn well. I think I saw one for HP and canon as well. Printershare used to work very well, but ever since they made everyone repay for the app its really gone down the pipe.
Just look for your manufacturer on the market and you should find it.

Printbot can print pdf on any network printer.
Printer Share has worked flawlessly everywhere I have gone (in fact, it has worked when my laptop was unable to find drivers). So no matter where I am, if there is a printer and there is wifi/network - I can print
As another person mentioned - if you have a printer it might have an app. I happen to have a cloud-ready HP printer

Is it possible?

Currently to me ubuntu running on top of android is pointless but intriguing. Is it possible to connected an external Usb wifi adapter to the phone and have it recognized in ubuntu? More simply put can the phone allow the needed data through the USB interface? I cannot be the only one considering the joy of running Airpwn on a mobile phone... Any thoughts? If the wifi adapter is possible it opens up a whole new box of abilities for the phone.

PS. How do you get Ubuntu to run on the Note?

It is possible to get Ubuntu running via a virtual machine setup (emulating Ubuntu on the phone inside Android). The other possibility is a remote desktop option.
The two problems however:
1. Most USB devices require power - something I dont believe the phone puts out thru the USB micro port.
2. Getting direct access to the hardware (required for most of these types of tools to work) is not likely possible via a VM or Remote Desktop situation.
My guess is, this wont work, but Im a glass half full kind of guy.
A little OT but does anyone know if Ubuntu (via Ubuntu installer free app) works on SauRom?
Tried to get working but I couldn't start the shell. I'm thinking the bottleneck is the kernel, not sure if it allows multiple loops or something like that

1. I thought about the power requirements after I bought it and so far I haven't been able to find any data on how much power the phone can supply through the USB port but seeing how the MHL requires additional power I might have to get creative to get power to the wifi adapter.
2. As long as the phone recognizes the wifi adapter as a host I don't think I'll have any problems with it inside the ubuntu VM. If I do I might be able to do alittle kernel work to make it communicate properly.
I'm trying to be optimistic as I really want it to work. Plus if integrating the wifi adapter directly fails I have a back up plan... Arduino to the rescue.

I'm not an expert on all things linux, but the chroot method isn't a virtual machine, it should be full fledged linux on the hardware.
Android runs all processes in a VM. But anyways I have it all working.

I have all the needed drivers for my wifi adapter cross compiled one set for the current ICS and one for GB. The ICS you need to manually install the drivers from terminal and the GB is already included into my custom kernel. If anyone is interested let me know. At this moment I do not plan on putting it out in the public in the development forum...

Atrix 4g and external USB WIFI adapter

Hello, i wish to enable promiscuous mode in my atrix 4g, but found out the chipset does not allow it.
The idea is to be able to crack easy WEP networks on the road.
Alternatively i was thinking on getting a cheap netbook and hook up a more powerfull USB wifi adapter like the 2 watt alfa AWUS036NH , that supports upgradable antennas as well, and was tested working in monitor / injection mode over linux.
but got me thinking, why spend money on a netbook if maybe i can hook up the wifi usb adapter into the atrix 4g hd multimedia dock, and then use aircrack with that wifi usb tested device, instead of the onboard wifi.
In know is possible to compile aircrack into android, but the problem always relies in incompatible monitor mode onboard wifi addapters.
With this USB addapter this issue would be solved.
Another issue is power, this 2w adapter needs it. I'm pretty sure the hd dock has a powered USB hub, so that would not be an issue. I would later hock up the dock into the car battery, or maybe use like a 12v 10a/h external battery for portability.
Does anyone has done anything like this before?
i already have a rooted phone and a debian img installed.
thanks
I'm also interested in it...
Seems that some tablet (like the flytouch 3) have a native support to some tipe you USB WiFi adapters
By the way this tablet have a similar "integrated USB WiFi adapter" (RT3070 or RTL8191SU) so it have the drivers already installed and this Is the reason why it support the adapter, I think...
Different usage scenario
Does anybody know if establishing wifi/lan using usb / multimedia dock is possible?
I'm not asking for aircrack or anything like that. I use an atrix in a multimedia dock (hooked up to stereo system) as my alarm clock, tuned to an internet radio station. My wifi on this atrix has recently burned out and I'd like to get a data connection again (external wifi/lan whatever) without needing to get a data plan (or activated sim at all).
Anybody ever try this or get it working somehow? A lot of atrixes get retired due to bad wifi, but if a cheap wifi dongle and bring it back to life, it can still serve many uses!!
Thanks!
