How bad really is the battery? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i want to port to verizon and get a 4g phone to lock in my unlimited data, but the horror stories of bad battery life are scaring me!
realistically, can you get through one day of moderate use without charging?

I just got mine, and am trying to train the battery and prune services to get maximum run time.
My first day with it, I ran Pandora in the car, plus Google Nav, plus LTE web browsing, etc. I got 4.5 hours full charge to shutdown.
I am still cycling the battery, and I used Juice Defender free for a few days. Now I am playing with Green Power Free, which I use on my froYo tablet. I can get around 8 hours off charger, now, on the OEM battery.
I want to keep the slim(-ish) profile, so i don't want the extended battery with back. But, I will probably experiment with the fleabay batteries and see what I can get.
Battery is a huge suck factor with the TBolt. But, no worse than the Evo 4G that I also ran for a month. And, for me, the speeds and coverage are better with LTE than wiMax.
I have a feeling that I will be shuffling the phone from charger at home to charger in car to charger at office. I hope that the USB port doesn't break....

I get around 14 hours a charge with light-moderate usage. If I don't use my phone at all it'll last a couple days. If I'm streaming lots of music, browsing the web, and making calls I get 6 hours at most.
It doesn't bother me because I am always somewhere I can charge if need be.

The battery life on the Thunderbolt does leave a little to be desired. That being said, if you want the fastest download and upload speeds than this is your phone. By rooting, you can use different kernels and profiles that CAN extend the battery but that is only a band-aid. I just posted this in another thread two seconds ago but ill post it here as well.

Getting these speeds require battery. If your happy with your 3G than get a different phone and you will get better battery. Its up to you.

my post has nothing to with this thread, but dude..........you signature....HILARIOUS!!!!!!

I get 4-6 hours per battery on my thunderbolt. Screw trying to ooze every bit of battery life out of it. That's not why I bought it. 4g and bluetooth are always on and I use location services and push emails. Twitter and rss feeds autoupdate.
I bought this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004Y6E5Z2
and it works great to charge all batteries. The extra batteries work pretty good, but the phone gets a little confused so I don't go below about 15-20% because sometimes it just shuts down. I think that is the battery software not being able to read the different batteries. The charger can charge one battery before my phone dies so I just switch as needed.

hmm, not exactly what i was hoping to hear. honestly i don't need a 4g phone now, but i want to grandfather in unlimited 4g before verizon takes that option away.
how good can the battery life get if you undervolt, turn off 4g when you're not web browsing, and buy the biggest battery that isn't obnoxiously large? how does the thunderbolt compare to the revolution or charge?

If you don't want a huge battery get the seidio slim .. works better than stock for me and I get around 12 hours of heavy usage.. then when it dies I switch to the stock if I'm not home.

I usually get 5 hrs or so in a 4G area. A whole day roughly 10 hrs in a 3G area.

I just got my thunderbolt a few days ago and I've been stuck spending time next to a charger all the time so far but its worth the speeds!

I have the extended battery... It's really not that bad....when holding in hand u have a better grip...I'm running stock and and have 4G off cause my area don't have 4G yet but when at work I'm in 4G zone. I only use 4G when I'm downloading a big file anyway....I'm sure if we ever get gb the battery will get better...will I'm hopeing at lease..lol

I lasted 13 hours... But 4G was off for about 8 hours.
Battery blows and something is draining the crap out of it even when sleeping. I'm gonna start analyzing with system panel soon to find the problem.

On a rom that has a toggle or using the lte on off app, you can toggle down to cdma/evdo unless you need to do something data intensive. Leaving lte on all the time isn't nessesary. Using aosp and stock battery, I easily make it through the day. I have the extended one though if I feel like it. Too heavy imo. Plus I look retarded when only I have the huge battery around 10 friends with super thin iphone 4's.

I do sometimes. I just use my phone so much I can get pretty low on 3g alone. So unless I'm on youtube or something I stay on 3g.

It's difficult to say whether one makes it through the day with moderate use since everyone's definition of moderate use is different. I'm rooted with das BAMF remix 1.8, stock kernel and settings, and after about 100 txt messages, half hour's worth of calls, 30 min. or so of gaming, and 30 min to hour of web browsing, all over 15 hours, my phone was at 68% at the end of the day. That's moderate usage for me, but most or some might call that light usage though. Oh and LTE on the entire time, but Wifi used for about 4 of those 15 hours.

my battery life is absolutely outstanding on this phone, even with 4g on all the time. maybe i just lucked out with a good phone?

I'm pretty sure the Revolution isn't that great on battery either and it's got 1 debloated ROM and BING! ewwww Granted the ROM out for it removes Bing but still. Also the Charge sucks down battery faster than the TBolt in my experience. If you get the extended battery like mentioned it lasts a pretty long time. I got it and thought I'd return it because of the size but it's really not that bad. It's definitely worth it to have the speeds and the dev support on this device! Plus it's not a Samsung and it doesn't come preloaded with Bing!!!

Battery shouldnt be a problem with moderate use. If your a heavy user just invest in an extra battery or two. or get the extended battery.

Amoled murders battery?

What is the deal with this phone? The battery life is not very good at all. I came from a phone that had a 1150 battery and this one has 1600! I am getting almost identical battery life as my old phone. I am running a fully debloated rom at stock clocks with the display turned all the way down and can HARDLY make it through an 8 hour work day. I've narrowed it down to the screen.
I remember reading about amoled when it was first announced and they said it would consume significantly less power than any other display technology. I'm starting to second guess this.
Its either the screen or the dual core processor that's draining this decent sized battery so fast.

I've been getting 12 hours on batter with almost 6 hours screen on time. Heavy usage. Every day. Better than my iPhone 4.

Amoled does. From what ive beem read ing super amoled plus.is alot better. The darker the better. Slcd is.a.good option for battery mizers though.
I voided my warranty and your mum.
Yes ive also read that the way super amoled plus works, is there is no backlight and individual pixels light up, so its better to have simple wallpapers with mostly black, would probably give you better battery life, as most of the screen will no be using any energy.
All android devices murder their batteries. It's nothing new get over it lol.
This device gets decent battery life considering it's the most powerful option out currently though.
The general masses do not understand how to set these phones up for optimal battery life. There are threads all over XDA on how to do this.
This phone for android is probably the best or near best in its class. I am impressed. Its better than my captivate was. I can get through 15 hour days with heavy use all the time with average of 4 hours screen time and i listen to a lot of music when the screen is off. This phone rocks i dont even see the need for a extended battery

I have no idea what you do with your phone or what . But I get more then enough battery with this phone, I do it all text talk surf web forums play and I make it home with enough battery to probably lend you some. Seriously we all know your not going to get iPhone battery life obviously the iPhone it just plain simple. But come on, this type of thread it's getting annoying there's a few already with help and tips on your issue search for them. Maybe you just got high hopes, or maybe it's not the phone it's you. BTW Amoled probably consume less battery but not enough for us power hungry users to see a different.

I don't think is the screen alone itself but the dual-core running at 1.2Ghz might eat more battery than your old phone with an smaller battery

You might want to install CPUSpy and BetterBatteryStats (BBS) so you can better diagnose where your battery issues are coming from. 8 hours seems very poor for this device. Use CPUSpy to see how much your device is running in deep sleep - with light usage I usually see around 80% deep sleep. You can use BBS to look for apps causing excessive wakelocks (BBS is available here on xda) to see if a particular app is causing the problem.
Unless you have a hardware problem, I don't think the display is your problem - the display on this device has a smaller percentage hit on battery use than my 3.2" LCD Aria.

Yet you've completely ignored people who have told you to get CPUSpy and BetterBatteryStats to figure out what's keeping your phone awake.
Most likely your phone is not defective, but you've installed an app that's hogging the battery or set up a configuration option that kills it, such as:
Hotmail calendar sync is known to cause massive battery drain due to a Hotmail server side bug
Some Exchange servers are misconfigured and cause major battery drain
Skype is a battery-hogging nightmare. If you absolutely have to use Skype, make sure to take it out with a task killer when you're done with it.
I haven't really pushed my device with screen-on time, however what are your idle battery drain statistics? If you have drain more than 2-3% per hour when the phone is idle (such as overnight), something is very wrong. You should be getting drain on the order of 1% an hour if you leave the phone overnight in moderate signal.

I havent ignored anyone. You assume that because I haven't responded to such comments that I haven't tried them. I frequently use cpuspy to make sure my phone is sleeping and I use bbs as well.
I'll leave the phone off the charger overnight to check it out though.
This still doesn't change the fact that HEAVY useage at 5+ hours of screen on time is absurd.
I am also planning to experiment with airplane mode and using only wifi tomorrow.

You can still exchange with a new one under 14 days or 30 days. 6 hours with screen on is not absurd on this phone in 12 hours. I have been with screen on with 2:45 hrs and voice with 45 min in 1 day and 8hrs with still 15+ % battery juice left.

IIRC, one of the review or comparison against iPhone4S benchmarked GS2 as 5 to 6 hours of internet browsing which means both screen on and using data. Wi-fi gives it a slightly longer battery life than cell data. Unfortunately, it didn't benchmark video playback time. iPhone4S spec says 8 hours of video. I hope GS2 is close to that. This is play video from local storage, not streaming. So, the data connection battery draw is out of picture. I managed to get 4+ hours of video playback with flight mode on with my old Captivate. Hopefully, GS2 will last longer, e.g. survive a coast to coast flight while still have some juice left for navigation.

He's not lying. I have seen 5 hours of screen on time and still had a little juice left at the end of 16 hour days. And it wasn't a one time deal. Seen it several times, though I usually don't use my phone that heavily. Yesterday I barely used my phone at all and was only down to like 85% after 16 hours.

To be honest I think that WiFi uses less battery than mobile data, so even with the push email it'll use less than just the mobile data without push. Let me rephrase what I said then. There's no way I'll ever see that little loss over that length of time, even without using the phone just in my pocket I lose 10% in less than 2 hours.

Wow, again, no way I'd ever see that battery life. I'm running Steel's ROM with one of the dual core kernels, nothing that should be draining it, just crappy data here so I guess it struggles to work draining the battery.

A weak cell signal is really rough on the battery. I use wifi at work and home, both have full signal 90% of the time. If my phone is just sitting there at idle it barely uses any battery. Showing battery life since unplugged really isn't giving any info. Up Time and Awake Time since unplugged, with either Data or Wifi on, is what everyone should be showing. That actually gives everyone a general idea of battery life...

If you look at the time where the battery dropped the most, your phone was awake but the screen was off that whole time. There is an app that is keeping your phone awake. I have never had that problem before but I am sure that there is a program on the market that would help find the culprit.

Which battery monitor program are you using?

So all those who got their rezound early, hows the battery?

As the title says I haven't seen anyone actually test the battery for a couple days, it's usually review and move on.
So how is it?
Well it hasn't been mentioned so it probably isn't worse than we expect it to be.
Also interested to know. Of course since this will be the first few days people have it, they'll be using it a ton so it may not be the best estimate on battery life but I would love to know an idea of how much to expect.
They haven't had time to calabrate yet.

7 hours of heavy use isn't bad. So idling with 4G off probably isn't terrible then. That is what I am most concerned about. Hopefully we will get kernel source and just get some undervolt going.

yeah not to mention that after you root you can flash leaner kernels and ROM's. But we'll have to wait for development to pick up, I really hope we see some good developers here.
So right now it's 1am and I took the phone off of the charger at 8:21 with 85% battery life. It is now at 47% with some steady texting, exchange activesync, some web browsing, and a 7 minute video all on 4g. I'm not sure what to make of that but it seems decent.

DAMMIT I WANT!!! 3 more days...
I don't know that I've charged it fully since I got it. It was close to fully charged before I went to a wedding tonight. Lasted all 6 hours or so I was there, but was tuckering out (~20%) by the time I left. But I did spend a bit of time playing with the phone. And 4G was on the whole time. And I turned live wallpaper on, played with my weather and clock widgets, tried to get a wifi connection that wouldn't work, browsed the web a bit.
I recharged on the way home to about 50%, and sitting around playing with it for the last hour to 1.5 hours, it's still at 40%.
If it makes you feel any better, the biggest battery hog was the display, BY FAR. Like 80-something percent to the <20% combined for the other functions. I'll try and remember to post my impressions from my first "normal" day of use tomorrow and let you know how the battery fairs.

I got mine yesterday and I can say it is about 25-30% better than a rooted thunderbolt....My logic says once rooted we will get really good battery life.
I am a heavy user and I can say I turned off fast boot and bump charged it 3 times on Thursday night. I gave it a heavy use all day on Friday.
Took it off the charger at 10 am around 8 pm I was on 35%. So that was 10 hours of heavy use and still had 35% left. If I was using the rooted bolt I would have been dead around 5:30 and a stock bolt...even sooner.
hope all these battery estimates are true, sounds like this will be my next phone!
Took it off the charger at about 11am today... Was close to 100%, maybe 95%. Just hooked it up to charge about 10 minutes ago (so off charger completely for ~10 hours). It had ~10% battery life left when I hooked it up.
Had Wifi and/or 4G on the entire day, including an hour and a half in a bad service area, where it fought for a bit to find service until I logged into the wifi network. Played about 1 hour worth of Pandora on high quality setting. A couple minutes of 4G Youtube. Tons of tinkering with games and downloading apps and playing around. Screen brightness was set to something like 30%. live wallpaper enabled. Weather and clock widget enabled. Data tracking widget enabled. Did a few seconds of video Skype too. I would say it was consistent use all day, but not necessarily heavy for most of the day.
EDIT: I forgot. One short phone call. I'm sort of a bad guinea pig for battery life on a phone because I really don't make a lot of phone calls. Consider my use representative of someone who uses data during his commute and for texting/games/forum/app usage.

I have very similar usage habits. Glad to hear that this seems to have relatively good battery life.

Bad/No service areas will kill a battery so fast. My office is in a windowless reinforced concrete room inside a reinforced windowless room inside a reinforced building. (Yo dawg)
I get no service at all. If I leave the 3g on, phone won't make it past 5 hours. Turn the 3G/WiFi off and battery percent goes down a few points.
I need one!!!
Kellex over a Droid-Life has gotten just over 10 hours of normal usage (all in 4G) for the past couple of days. He also stated he is not a heavy user by any means.

Seems like it isn't as bad as most thought it would be.
Battery - Caution
I remain interested in the phone but undecided due to some really bad hardware failures I have on my Dinc.
While I am very interested in battery life like everyone else, please everyone keep in mind that "how is the battery" is as personal a question as "which radio is the best one to use."
There is no way one person can truly tell you how the battery will be for you. If you sit in an interior office without wifi, and have sync contacts and facebook set for every hour, that ALONE will cause a drain that may not be comparable.

Yay, you got another post!
That aside ... just please everyone keep that in mind when making battery life decisions based on what others experience; battery life can be GREATLY impacted by things well outside what programs you might run and how many texts you might send.

Best battery?

Whats the best battery for longer usage WITHOUT having to replace the door (have a 40$ case that would go to waste)
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
None lol. You'd have to get an extended if you really want extra life that bad. I contacted Motorola few weeks back and complained about battery life (even though its not bad at all) and they offered to send me one for free. Best solution is to have 2 batteries!
If you really want to save yourself some battery ditch all those juice defender type apps and just uncheck these when you're not on your phone. I can get my phone to last at least 28 hours on a single charge by turning these on only when I need them. But battery life isn't a problem for me because I have 2 OEM batteries

honestly it's got great battery life, but if you go to a service and repair center and ask them to test your battery, they could at the vary least get you a replacement battery. ( if it's bad)
also turn off your GPS, for what ever reason the GPS hogs a TON of batt. on this phone. more than any other phone i've ever owned actually...
First, what Kenny said. I have 2 batteries but only really carry both when I'm going out or know I will be taking pictures or video (trust me, both will drain your phone real quick)
My GPS is NEVER on unless its in CarDock and im traveling in unfamilar area! No use for it at home. WiFi either. I have 2 computers at work and 3 at home.
Lastly, ante up the $$$ and get your battery from Motorola. Not all batteries are alike. (then again, I had 5 battereis with Evo I got for like $3.00 each. Some of them had some good run time?)
See I use my phone a lot like almost constantly, but ive set everything off that I can including getting a widget that can set the brightness all the way down correctly
Even with the screen set to 0% I only get about 4-5 hours.. That normal? Ill try setting background data off

You have issues sorry to say. I can unplug my phone when I shut off alarm at 6:00AM, listen to Pandora over BT Headphones all day at work, check my email several times and send 15+ text at work (sometimes more) and still make it home at 5:30PM (barely, like 10 or 12%, but I make it.)

Any phone you pick up that has constant data running in background with a large screen will drain if you never put it down. Ask the galaxy nexus people lol? Only simple solution is to stop using it as much. Also cdma phones are known to have worse battery than GSM especially sprint; the worse your signal is the worse the battery life is. Unfortunately, sprints signal is terrible every where so we all suffer. If I use my phone for 3-4 hours straight I would have the same results. Just get a backup OEM battery man. I assure you for us HEAVY users thats about normal man. If your display is over 60% you need to put your phone down and take a break buddy. 70% and you're complaining about battery life? I just noticed that lmfao
PS that battery app doesn't do anything man get rid of it
I actually got rid of that app right after I posted this hahaha and the background data switch gave me significantly better battery life!! Now im at over 3 hours and at 48%!

I had seen a 2200mah battery on amazon but it was a cheap one that wouldnt even go past 1500mah I was hoping someone knew of a 1750mah - 2200mah battery seeing as there is one already, just too cheaply made for me(was only like 8$ and horrible reviews)
Edit- any thoughts on this deal or similar ones?

The only batteries I recommend is the stock 1750 OEM. I've owned a ton of android phones and I'm not a fan of aftermarket cheap batteries. Here's what you do: Go to moto website, register your device, find te troubleshooting link, chat with a live rep, tell them your battery keeps getting extremely hot, make sure you tell them you've done hard resets from settings and through recovery, let them talk a bit, tell them sprints being if no help and wants to charge you for new battery, and get a free one sent to your house.
I did exactly what I just told you and it worked. Don't waste money buying those after market batteries..
Next I have to chat with them again for a free battery replacement door because mine makes little noises now from taking the back off so much. Plus its super thin and not a high grade of plastic.
Isnt the stock battery 1600mah? Atleast thats what my battery said on it..maybe radioshack jipped me xD and ima do that soon as I get home thank you!

My battery life ranges between a day and a half if I'm not using it much, to about 4 hours if I watch a few videos on it from NetFlix. I've noticed the battery seems to last longer with a stable 4G connection compared to 3G, and a lot longer than 4G with a constant WiFi connection (I have about 48 apps on the phone, battery life is significantly longer w/no apps installed)
I think I'll find an extended battery for good reviews then also try to get a free oem battery and rest both.

i don't think this impacts your kernel. Kernels modify how the hardware talks with the phone. This app is the contrary, it impacts how the software talk to the phone. I think its worth a try either way
In any case, i installed the app earlier, it takes about 2 days to learn my behavior, i will see how it work in a couple of days and i'll report back. Usually, i can get a full day of light to moderate use and still have 30 - 40 % when i get home. we'll see with this app

I can't believe people are spending 7 bucks on kernel adjustments and sound adjustments. Seems like robbery to me. Titanium backup is pretty much the most useful app ever and it doesn't cost that much.

I believe most people are downloading the apps to support the dev. In this case namely Faux. He made a good kernel so why not support him..

i think hes talking about fauxclock and fauxsound. I wouldnt pay for that, but i do trust the developper as hes been the best kernel maker since the S2
mine just got out of learning mode...will check back in 48 hours with some stats
this is why you pay for a kernel tweaker ,and thats overclocked to 2.1 and screen time of 2 hours and talk time of about 1 and half hours and still have 22 percent to go that will take me over 24 hours, ohh and i just started using battery guru yesterday still in learning mode
Interesting app, installed it and will test it over the next few days.
This should have come integrated with all factory roms, instead of gimiky junk.
Thanks for sharing.

tbh 24 hours with 2 hours screen on is not that good. If i dont use wifi, just LTE every day i get 24-30 hours with about 2.5 hours screen on thats OC'ed just a tad. Now using wifi as much as i can i can get 5-6 hours screen on same time frame...

While I completely agree with you that it should have come pre-installed, there's also the chance that this, too, is a gimmicky app! I've got 4 hours left in "learning mode," so we'll see.... I'm already getting incredible battery life, so I don't have much to complain about!

F you for seeing the point in supporting devs. I spent 7hrs straight last night debugging my aospa build - all for free - no charge to you. Thanks.
well, very interesting results. I've been out of learning mode for about 2 days, and i have to say i really see a considerable difference. First, i would just like to point out i'm not a HEAVY user, more moderate to light. I'm an insurance broker, i'm on the phone from 9am to 5pm about 80% of the day (on land line), so my screen time is about 1.5 hour at 5pm, i mostly check social networks, emails, tapatalk, some youtube vids during breaks, my apps update automatically during the day. On a good day, i come home with 40%, on a day of heavy usage, about 20%, i'm always on lte tho. I also never disable wifi, bt, gps and most other features.
Today has really been the determining day because its the first day the counter was on. When i came home today, i had 1h17 mins of screen time and.................................68% left!!!! Then from about 6pm to about 30 minutes before bedtime bedtime and adding an another 30 mins of screen time (1:00am EST) i lost an extra 15% to bring me down to 53% just before i plugged it for the night. Thats a HUGE improvement. The great thing about this is that all day, i received all my FB notification instantly, all my emails and other stuff. I have not seen any cut in functionality.
So this phone was unplugged at 7am this morning, and in 17 hours, with just under 2 hours of screentime, and light to moderate use, i lost in total, 47% of juice and i didn't notice giving up any functionality.
I have to say i'm impressed. I hope this was not just a really good day, and that this app actually was the reason for the improvement.
myn came out of learning yesterday i am using fauxs kernel too but this is light usage but still this is great,14 hours and still at 78 percent wow
Mine came out of leaning about 10pm last night. I noticed using power saving mode helped a lot without sacrificing normal performance just using apps and checking messages and stuff. Standby with batteryguru my idle almost flat line which helps a lot. Usage with power saving on and off with battery guru was almost the same. Battery just seemed to stretch. Automatic brightness also seems to work better. Before battery guru kicked in auto brightness was all over the place or did not work very well, more of not working well. Now auto brightness is fairly consistent though the delay us often 1-5 seconds. Still much better than before. It also seemed to get better battery life with my at&t sim rather than T-Mobile. I think part of it is T-Mobile bloatware running in the background and probably the better reception. But in tmobile's defense I do have to say I am impressed with the network. I am seriously considering switching to T-Mobile now. Their dc hspa+ and lte were both fairly consistent at ~10mbps with low latency. Also am getting much better signal at my apartment. At work is a mixed bag though. Hard pulling signal in the reception challenged places where in would get a signal with atnt. At&t lte though is much faster. Hardly dipped below 10megs and often got 20-30mb/s. I am going to return my gs4 though and see what the Google edition brings. I have some issues with mine that I can't isolate to hardware or software any further unless I root and I won't do that becuae I haven't committed to the phone yet. Also have a two tone screen. One side is darker than the other. Was not a big deal until I started noticing how bad the black crush was on the darker/left side and loss of details in videos. I was not actively looking for this loss of clarity either. After extensive display testing now I can't shake the obvious disparity and hope i get abetter screen if I get a Google gs4. Anyways, went off topic, but battery guru is the real deal. Very noticeable.improvement in battery and phone got less hot and took longer to get to a borderline warmth level. Definitely worth looking into this app to improve battery. With the right tweaks, root access and optimizing some of the apps for black background (why the hell samsung went back to white backgrounds like email have no clue) this phone could probably get 6h in a heavy day of usage easily, provided no GPU intensive apps/games are played.

Just some stats since downloading this app and it being out of learning mode and I'm amazed.. I normally get about 12-14 hours no charge with about 30% left.. Although I did put this on the charger for about 20 minutes last night the last full charge was 4pm yesterday and I'm just now putting it on the charger at 12pm today.. Now one problem is it learns how you use your phone and adjusts to your usage, that said, I work from 430pm to 430am Monday thru Thursday and 430 till 2am at the latest on Fridays so my phone isn't on Wi-Fi in those hours so when I got off work early last night this app automatically had my Wi-Fi off cause the 2 day learning period was during the week. So I didn't realize it and did some heavy browsing. But overall this app is amazing and a must have..
