Evo View 4G data speed - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

So I'm using 3G/4G service on my View for the first time since buying it yesterday. Data speeds are much slower than my Evo 4G tested side by side.
Example
Evo 4G:
Ping 120
DL 991
Up 885
View 4G
Ping 800
DL 127
Up 331
Anyone else seeing this? I did stop in a 4G area and got 6Mbps down so 4G seems ok.

Ok I'm so glad someone else is experiencing very poor 3G speeds. My EVO View review device is getting 130 kb/s down and up, while my Epic is getting 1440 kb/s down and 750 kb/s up from the same spot.
This is going to score the View 4G way down on my review when I finish it if it is not addressed or fixed...

Same problem here. If I have time today I'll put together some speed tests and send them to the tech blogs.

I don't have 4G to test, but the 3G speeds are bad. Here are several tests:

And they made me notice something interesting, apparently I'm stuck in 1x mode?!? That didn't show until I exported it but I do now notice there's no EV/3G icon on my taskbar.

I'm experiencing similar stuff. Really hope Sprint fixes this before the 30 days are up or this bad boy might be going back .

I did an update network profile (something I've done several times before) but this time I watched and saw the 3G icon appear. Ran more tests, no change and the export still says 1x. I know the radios are seperate but could they both be too shielded or something? I think I'll hop into a Sprint store to see if they have any ideas.

Indeed, the View seems stuck in 1x mode on the radio.

I tested again earlier and got over 600kbps down on the EVO 4G, but got an uninspiring 14kbps down on the View. I really hope this gets addressed soon. I've been through a bunch of tablets lately, and this is my favorite. I have a Flyer and an Evo View sitting in front of me and data speeds like this make me want to keep the Flyer instead since I have to use wifi on the View to get anything done.

Good news, a Sprint employee fixed it though at the time he didn't know it. He was baffled as he ran the tests we did and then asked if I'd mind trying a hard reset. After that didn't change anything he did a manual ota activation which still didn't help (or so we thought). I told him that I had to go and it was closing time anyway, so he said come back tomorrow and bring everything to exchange it after having one more technician look at it just to be sure. As I was heading to the store for some shopping I got back on it and it was nice and fast all of the sudden. So I did some tests.and behold:

Believe it or not, he used the calculator. He typed in some special code I didn't see and it flipped to a different screen where it asked for a password.

I had poor data speeds also. I mean terrible 3G speeds, and I called Tech Support. They put me on hold, then came back and told me to turn the device off, and he put me back on hold. When he came back, he said turn on the device, and things should be different. Sure enough, my View was one fast Tablet.
I had tried the PRL update myself, and that didn't work. Whatever they changed, was something other than PRL.
JOHN

Maybe my stuff was just a coincidence then and someone flipped a switch on the back end.

I have noticed the same thing. Even if I am on WiFi with good signal, my internet is slow, give it up on 3G and I am using Dolphin HD. I have done the hole on and off and hard reset. I will try and call Tech support and find out, if nothing back to my Galaxy Tab.

I will say it's night and day difference, I went from 50-100kbps to 600-800kbps. Even if the radio had stayed at that speed I love this tablet too much to give it up.

My View has an amazing difference in speed since the tech support call. Night and Day for sure. I was actually going to take it back if that was all the faster it was going to be, but now I am happy.

Beware, every time you enter one of these secret code menus, it's logged into a file on the phone that Sprint could "theoretically" look into if they wanted.
Okay gentlemen, here's the first "Secret code" using the calculator to get to the phone menu.
Open the Calculator, switch to landscape and press !!889! and then the equal sign. Make sure you're in landscape or you won't see the !.
I'll keep digging to see if there's more. Have fun!
Also, you can see that the "Internet Calling" is available in this menu. Unfortunately, while you can connect to a SIP gateway, initiating a call is impossible.
Okay, here's the testing menu:
Calc/Landscape: !+!+4636+!+! then equals.

I had the same thing yesterday. Two hrs on phone with tech support and four factory resets to get proper Evdo data. It sux explaining to CS why HTC has no 1X data indicator on the newer devices as well. 3G on screen means nothing unless root with proper framework. I was pissed say the least.

OK, so after a day of troubleshooting I wasn't able to get connected to EVDO, still stuck in 1xRTT (Factory resets, profile resets, and even a device swap.) I think I got a ticket submitted to get a callback after more investigation, but I don't know. The rep seemed vaguely aware of the issue in the forums, so hopefully they figure out what's up. Anybody else who has this problem, which plan are you on? (Maybe it's a problem with provisioning of a specific rate plan?) I'm on the $19.99 1GB plan. The demo unit in store was connecting to EVDO just fine and getting EVDO speeds.
I also agree it was kind of a pain dealing with Tech Support explaining the issue, but as I have done various Tech Support work with Clearwire over the last year, I understand how it goes.

[Q] San Diego / So Cal - anyone else having major data problems

Anyone else in San Diego or Socal having major data issues. Started around 9pm 4G icon but no data. I've rebooted several times including removing the SIM card. I'm now getting now data icon with occasional 1x. Just wondering if it's the network or my phone.

What are are you in if you don't mind me asking? I was up in Rancho Bernardo earlier this evening and everything seemed fine. Started noticing issues when I got near Kearny Mesa/Tierrasanta.
I have the same problem here in LA, just shows 1X.

Oh forgot to include location, I am in lakeside which always holds really good 4g and like you said between 9-10pm I looked down and see 1x but it keeps going in and out as I type this.
Note: looking at perfect storm thread in development others are having issues across the US of A. So looks as if it's widespread enough that must be VZW issue, at least for some of us.

I'm so happy I'm not alone. I just finished flashing the stock PGIMG05.ZIP file found in this forum and when it booted up it said, "mobile network type cdma 1xrtt." Now, I'm on 1x. What gives?
I'm in Santa Monica, CA, and am stuck on 1xRTT. Definite inconvenice, but not the end of the world. At least I can still make calls and do SMS.
Is this just SoCal, or the whole state/country?
Thanks guys. Looks like there are a few reports from various regions of the country in the CM7 thread as well.

Do you think trying a different radio would help? That's a whole reason why I flashed over to stock, because the previous radio leaks were giving me problems.
Looks like it's probably a Verizon network issue. I'm on stock radio FWIW.
I am in the same boat in my location. The 4g icon went off for a while, and all of a sudden its just a 1x icon. I restarted my phone, to no avail.
So far I can receive and place calls, so that's good.
Here's what I'm running. Does anyone see that the error could be on my part?

As most are aware both the LTE network and eHPRD are down (a special version of 3G for the Thunderbolt only). To get 3G data back you just need to change your settings back to the normal 3G network. Here are the steps:
Dial ##778# and hit send
A pop-up window named EPST will show up giving you 2 choices: View Mode and Edit Mode. Pick: Edit Mode.
Enter the Password: 000000
Go down to Modem Settings and pick “Rev A“
You’ll want to choose enable and click OK, hit the menu button and then press “Commit Modifications.”
I hope this helps anyone that is left in the dark by this outage.
edit 2 suggested by NDK: one more step guys, if you are on auto cdma/lte settings, you might have to go in to
*#*#4636#*#* and select EVDO only to get 3g.
My thunderbolt worked on auto cdma/lte but this may cause less conflict.
Same here in Honolulu, HI. At 1x here since this afternoon even in 3g only area's. It's weird that the whole country is experiencing this.

No data except 1X here in Detroit, which has a very strong 4G signal. I can confirm my company has a traditional 3G repeater and I cannot connect to that either (which i normally can). I guess I will wait it out but I was afraid my DAS BAMF kernel could have been the culprit (Thank God its not, I love DASBAMF!).

Service update followed by faster 3g

Woke up this morning to see a message stating my phone updated on its own. Scared me because I'm rooted and everything. I didn't notice any changes though. I can't remember the exact message but it did say service update. Did a speed test on 3g and found 1mbps down. I used to get 400k.
I'm just south of Chicago btw.
I got the same update, anyone know what its for?
Woke up this morning to the same message about a service update. Whatever they did is very nice. Download and upload speeds seem to both be much improved but whats even more impressive is the ping time which is vastly improved. I don't think I've ever seen ping times that fast on 3G. As you can see in my sig even 4G ping times have been much slower.

I saw something similar last night around 10:30 PM EST. I clicked "cancel" or whatever as soon as I saw it pop up, but I think I was too late. I had been running CM for several weeks, but just flashed a Synergy ROM to have something different a day or so ago. Just my luck that they would send out a non-optional update during a time when I'm on a Sense ROM. I suspect an AOSP ROM wouldn't have been affected. Anyway, I haven't noticed any significant changes in speed, but have yet to really test it. I wonder if this is part of the whole Network Vision thing?
Got the same service message as well (Chicago area phone currently in Sioux Falls - affiliate network Swiftel)
Same here - service update in B'more.
sub100ms ping and 1.3mbps up/ 800kbps down ... ON 3G!!!
WOW...
I'm skeptical/cynical though - where is the bitter that comes with the sweet?
Also, sorry for sort of a double post if anyone plans to complain. I was getting ready for work when I did this and didn't even look at other posts.
Now that that's out of the way... I kinda kept an eye on my service on my way to work, which is a 50 minute drive through the country roads, but still close enough to the city that i'm not in the boonies. Was streaming Pandora to get a feel for it, but as soon as I got a mile or 2 away from home, service dropped to 1x, but full bars. It stayed that way until I got to work... maybe they're still working on things here.
Got the update here. Same old garbage 100k to 300k speeds south of Tampa. If anything, my signal strength seems worse. Used to have 1 bar sometimes blinking the second. Now I have zero sometimes blinking the first.
Mike
I got the "...service updated" Message last night around 10:30 CST (KC/Central Mo area). PRL is the same version as before. I have NEVER seen a dialogue message like this before, ever, with sprint. I am on a rooted custom ROM as well. SO much for thinking we have "total" control of our devices.
3G speed tests today show consistently faster downstream. I'll continue testing.

My Evo 3d is hitting over 2 MB with pings under 100. My Evo 4g is around 1 MB with varying pings. I am running MikG 2.59 on the Evo 4g. The service update looks like they enhanced the 3g speeds for the Evo 3d IMO.

Well, I am begrudgingly happy for you. LOL
Actually, I guess that the location is moot since I haven't received the update.
I have also done the 3g speed tweak from the old Evo 4g days. Both my 4g and 3d have it. Ive been watching the Evo 4g forum to see if any1 has gotten the service update.
Got the forced update in Sacramento this morning. My 3G signal is much improved in my office. 100ms ping, 1.32Mbps down, .37mbps up. Before I could hardly connect at all.
So I'm thinking something must have changed...
Oh, 4g still sucks though.
MASSIVE improvement here:
before always >300ms and never 1mbps down (generally 300-600) or 300kbps up...
NOW
all day on different towers <80ms; almost 2mbps down; and approaching 1mbps up
Near Baltimore/Ellicott City
I don't see any chatter on the evo og, evo shift, epic 4g, ... re the update.
BUT - It does seem some evo3ds are unaffected - still 300ms pings and horrible down speeds.

Hi, so ever since I've picked up this phone, I've had severe data issues and thought, holy hell, my og killed this phone just a day ago, what gives? Well from what I've noticed, I don't think It's HTC at all, I think It's sprint. And my reasoning for this is all day my data sucks, severely but at night about 11:30 pm magically kicks into overdrive, with three bars I get 2Mbps but during the day I can have full signal and I'm lucky to have 1Mbps... Can anyone else confirm this? And if so, what's really going on? I talked to sprint and they say towers are fine/shouldn't be any problems and I'll be lucky to ever see 4g LTE in my area before my contract is up so they aren't scewing with the towers or are they? Conformation from someone else or this beautiful phone goes back... Lol, thanks...

I woulnt complain with those speed many people arnt even close to 1 mbps in many areas

Well during the day I get like .11 Mbps but all night I have amazing speeds, I can't even log in to facebook and sometimes xda, as it times out, just trying to figure out what's really going on...

Highest I've gotten in a few days is .06 mbps

Have you tried at like 2am? My speeds are dropping as we speak... Just trying to troubleshoot our phones, I'm a tech, that's what I do, I love this phone...
Edit .08Mbps down .56 up with five bars...

Has anyone had data issues and tried a different prl, say from another provider and gotten much better results?

Speeds are terrible almost nationwide right now. I recently flew to dc and my stopover in Atlanta also sucked, but Arlington was good.
I believe it is due to sprint rolling out their 3G network update. I haven't seen an ETA regarding its completion.

Data speeds are much slower than my OG Evo. I'm in Atlanta and I think some people have got LTE.....
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Network vision isn't getting here quick enough.. At 5am my speeds are 0.11Mb/sec.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
I talked to tech support yesterday regarding this issue...they are doing tower upgrades and it is affecting data speeds
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
My speeds seem to be about the same as the OG Evo.
Speed Test App varies from 1.5mbps to 2.0mbps.
I live in decently un-populated area of Michigan though. Most people are on Verizon here because they rolled out 4G LTE here a few months back.
I find it strange, when I talk to sprint in my area, they say it must be my phone, cause there aren't any updates here what so ever but I know it's not the phone, it gets amazing speeds at off peak times... And the other thing that bugs me is the signal strength doesn't correspond whatsoever to the data speeds I'm getting... Hopefully something/someone gets this cleared up cause technically it doesn't really make sense...

I get very inconsistent speeds through out the day; And when I spoke to Sprint, they gave the "towers are being upgraded" spiel. They also gave me this website to check which towers are being upgraded, or have been upgraded:
https:// network. sprint. com
*Note, they also gave me a $30 dollar credit on my next bill, which is a nice gesture, but I'd rather have better service.
I'm in Houston, and my 3g was acting up and my GPS put me in Joliet, I called sprint and they reset my service, powered phone off, powered phone on and reset my profile. so far, so good.
Edit: I couldn't send this post....dropped connection. I went to settings and set roaming to automatic and instant connection.

Ah totally forgot about that website. Thanks for the reminder. Looks like I'm getting 1 voice, 1 data speed, and 1 data capacity upgrade in the next six months and all at the two corners of my community... all right outside Verizon's socal HQ no less
I just spent 45 minutes on the phone with Sprint. Apparently they are getting a lot of calls with people complaining about data speeds on the 4G LTE.
The Sprint rep tried a bunch of things, but even though I'm showing three bars of signal, I have no Internet. It does work sometimes, just not at my phone or office!
She suggested taking it back to a Sprint store and having them reactivate my OG Evo until this phone gets fixed, either with some kind of software fix, or a new hardware version. She says they are logging all these issues, so they can figure out how to fix it.
I have the same issues (Chicago). Called Sprint last night and told them I'm not paying all this money to have 1990 speeds. They patched me over to Level 2 support (I think that's what they called it) and the guy told me that I didn't have data all day, actually. He did some kind of upgrade and everything popped into place. He asked if he solved my problem and I told him "Yeah... for NOW." We'll see how long it lasts. They have an open ticket for me to take the phone back to the Sprint store by close of business tomorrow if I want to have them test it or trade it. I asked them what for - the problem existed on two phones, it's the NETWORK! I also told them to remove the upgrade charge, which is a very small token for poor service... they did. I'm placated but not happy and I'm trying to be patient.
It could very well be your phone. The first one I had was having extremely slow data speeds and occasionally even dropped data connection, Sprint sent me a replacement phone and it has way better speeds than my original Evo ever did.

In depth comparison of 3g speed between OG Evo 4g and Evo 4g LTE

So I know alot of us are having issues with data speed on our Evo 4G LTE's
Im doing a comparison test using speedtest.net. Because I dont have both devices activated at the same time, I had to do it on one then activate the other and do it on that as well. The phones were placed in the exact same location using the exact same tower, which I am about 1000 feet from.
Evo 4g LTE
- signal strength 3 bars -94 dBm

Evo 4g

Now I know this information is slightly off because of the time difference but as you can see the speeds vary greatly. I am going to keep my Evo 4g LTE for a few more days to see if sprint does anything about this.
Things I have done to try and fix the speed issues:
-reset the phone
-reprovision the phone using my MSL
-update PRL
-update profile
-I tested another Evo 4g LTE and got the same dismal results
Sorry I forgot to mention the Sprint rep told me those speeds on the EVO 4g LTE are normal -_-
Wow that was sure "In depth"
In one of the posts on here, there's reference to some optimized network settings. I wonder if that will help.
I don't have the link handy, nor do I recall book marking/subscribing to it. Effectively, it optimizes tcp/ip settings, similar to what was done when going from dialup to dsl/cable; larger receive window buffers and a few other changes.
Sorry I started this thread comparing both phones from 4 different locations on different towers at the same time but for whatever reason none of the screen shots saved on my EVO 4G LTE and I had already switched phones out 4 times and was getting tired of it. But in 3 of the 4 locations the original EVO out shined the 4G LTE. Only in a parking lot with blue skys were the 2 devices similar in speed.
THIS IS JUST RIDICULOUS! 3G IS USELESS FOR ME!

Poor Connections - hardware or software?
Massiveian-
Thanks a ton for doing that. I've been keeping a running log of my speed tests on the LTE and was planning to re-initialize the OG 4G to make a similar comparison. You saved me the effort.
Basically your data is pretty clear that the LTE is running approximately 5X fslower than the old 4G on the same exact network setup.
This in my view brings the problem squarely bacj to the phone.
Do you think its fixable? H/W (antenna etc. ) or a S/W problem?
I'm kind thinking that the device and radio are designed for the supposed LTE network and that it's simply suboptimal running on the 3G network and the only thing that's going top work is emergence of LTE network, but based on the "4G" i'm not going to hold my breath.
I'm seeing that this is a real dealbreaker for a lot of users. I'v had the phone since pre-order so its now probably like 2 weks and basically I can't get alot of use out of it.
I'm dialing *2 for sprint in the am and going back to the evo 4g until this is resolved.
I'm frustrated because I got a galaxy [email protected] and it also had really bad connections, now I thought lte would be the one, but looks like I'm going to wait longer.
Mike
I have ****ty data speeds too. I dont ha r data to back it up but my phone sucks add if I am not on WiFi.

That ping seems long even for the OG EVO getting 1+ MB/s. Is your GPS picking a server close to you?
For all the people with data connection problems, where are you located? There's been talk about 1st stage LTE rollout cities having their towers heavily worked on to push out LTE which I'm assuming which will affect our data connectivity.
I'm in San Francisco and have noticed horrible speeds in pockets of the city, but will be perfectly normal a few blocks over after switching towers. This makes me fairly certain it's a network issue and not phone issue.
Also, I work in San Jose which is a 2nd stage LTE city (weird how they split the Bay Area into 2 regions) and I've never seen data connectivity issues around there.
Damn those speeds suck, I switched my galaxy nexus for this phone cause I ended up getting better speeds, right now is late in Las Vegas so I'm getting almost 2mbps
This is what I got earlier in the morning
And this is my peak hour
If this speeds go lower I'm changing carriers I like this phone so I do want to keep it but I want to have the same speeds

Although the phone itself is fantastic I really cant recommend it based on the data/network performance... and its really unsettling because the build quality is fantastic and I wanted them to really outshine the competition. I bought a case for it, stuck a screen protector on it, made sure it was all good and ready for the long haul and now I'm thinking of returning it.
Here in Dallas with a 3G speed of 157kbps, you just cant do anything with it. I have to feed off my local wi-fi in order to do anything data related with my phone (thankfully that signal is amazing, 12Mbps).
But now after trying multiple roms, multiple settings, different PRL's I have ran out of options and my 14 days are almost up, I guess the only thing I can do is return it and get my NS4G back until I can test other phones.
It's a ****ing shame, I love the capabilities of this phone, but the speed I'm getting is horrendous.
Here is my speeds from numerous days worth of testing.
My speeds were approximately 1/4 of what I was getting on my OG Evo until yesterday afternoon when I went into settings and manually updated my PRL. Now my speeds are comparable to my OG Evo.

My speeds were also like most of you are reporting, 200k or so. Since having the "software reinstalled and phone re-activated" at the Sprint store this is what I get, same exact place I took prior tests.

Thank you for letting us know. There is a bunch of us ready to jump the gun and return the phone -I do not really want to, but we can't get locked on contract with this going on.-
Can you please provide us with updates on how it works on different locations?
Also, do you have any idea what kind of "reinstall" they did at the store? What if the ones of us who activated the phone by ourselves are the ones having the issue?
Thanks a lot,

All they do is use your MSL TO GET into the phone to provision it.
They did for me as well and did not work. I have also tried dojng this myself with no change
My speeds are so bad I hardly even do anything that requires data unless I'm connected to wifi.
Data seems much faster on the EVO LTE vs my photon and og EVO. Also, the ability to use 3G data while on the phone on the LTE is a HUGE benefit. Wait for the upgrades, speeds will increase for everyone on 3G as well as LTE.
Also, EVERY new phone has the same exact threads and discussions about how oh my god data is so much slower on this new phone -I'm gonna return it!! Well put the same phone on Verizon's PRL and it works just fine for data speeds. Point being, it's not the phone it's the network-WHICH IS BEING UPGRADED. wait for the upgrades or jump to Verizon.
My speeds are way faster than my OG and my 3D. But have only been so on PRL 24003. I know it's not supposed to work that way, but as soon as I change PRLs, my speed drop.
My speeds at home are the same or faster than I was getting on og EVO, however, the signal is worse. I might try roam control and force my phone on vzw network at work, then if sprint doesn't like it they can cancel my plan

Same here in downtown Philly; 3G speeds were abysmal -- when it even connected to a network at all. Between this issue, the issue of WiFi not handing off to 3G (or going to/from roaming -- basically hand-offs were a coin-toss as to whether they'd work), and the random modem-crash reboots, I threw in the towel. The EVO LTE is back at Sprint and I've sadly gone back to my OG EVO. I suspect others will do the same.

How can I get Sprint to respond to this slow data?

I've been calling every day, every day they tell me no data outages in my area. Have another Sprint user in my building getting same speeds. I've resorted to installing a 3G roaming PRL because they simple won't do anything about it. Before 9/4 the data was fine, slow at times, but I could at least stream Pandora, etc...

Sorry that's so hard to see... but it's less than 100kbps download on almost ALL of them... It's slower than 56k modem most of the time. I have 3G symbol with 4/6 bars and never had bad data like this in the location before 9/4/2012.
Well you could hold your breath or move to city with lte... Jk but yeah I feel ya on the slow data.

Is it common that when the roll out vision data speeds go to crap before they get better? It's funny as it only seems to be in this 2 mile range around my work. By my house, I'm getting 3G speeds above 1400kbps (which I've never got before). I've told Sprint that, told them that I've updated my profile, basically told them everything and that I just want them to tell an engineer despite what their system shows, that their is slow data in this address range... Still nothing.
Guess I'll just get my contract terminated for roaming...

In the Speedtest Application, just hit the "RESULTS" tab below & it'll give you every run, (date + time, download, upload & ping)
I'm well aware of that, but I wanted more results than that displays, so I exported to CSV. I've fixed the first post so it was better formatting.

I have read that speeds can be affected during the switch over. In my personal experience, it also depends on geographic location. I live in Lake Worth FL, I get 2mb down and almost 900kb up from my house on 3g. Now, I work in North Miami Beach, I'm lucky if I get 100kb down and 3 kb up down here, even on 5 bars. This is even before the LTE rollout. Just because you have a good signal, doesn't mean your data will be fast. I think some areas may be over subscribed, they just don't have the bandwidth available for all their devices in some areas. Hopefully this will get better as they rollout LTE in my area.
If they are upgrading to vision it would be more likely that your speeds would fluctuate rather then stay at a constant low. They may be repairing towers in that area and pushing the load onto remaining towers. That essentially cripples available bandwidth. Had to put up with a similar issue for almost 3 straight months. They should tell you if there are any repairs or improvements being done. Have you tried having your call escalated?

+1 on this. That was going to be my recommendation as well.
CR will probably credit you which looks like you are entitled with the crappy service. And yes, data gets worse during NV upgrades, especially when they are working on the backhaul to the towers. It gets worse before it gets better then you will know its almost time to light up LTE. in short, nothing much more you can do other than leave Sprint but I'm thinking it will be regretted in the end.

Uh, fix it. No one should have data this slow consistently. Every single second. I understand periods of slowness, but this is absurd.
And, it looks like they fixed it last night... Back to normal 400-600kbps.
I've had data that slow at home for close to 15 months, all I got was an Airave (sounds like a motto on a t-shirt).

Get an Airave!, I just moved to a remote area of Hawaii, no data and 1bar at best. Two days after calling for an airave I recieved it. Now 5bars and full 3g. Best part is its free!
