Hi, so ever since I've picked up this phone, I've had severe data issues and thought, holy hell, my og killed this phone just a day ago, what gives? Well from what I've noticed, I don't think It's HTC at all, I think It's sprint. And my reasoning for this is all day my data sucks, severely but at night about 11:30 pm magically kicks into overdrive, with three bars I get 2Mbps but during the day I can have full signal and I'm lucky to have 1Mbps... Can anyone else confirm this? And if so, what's really going on? I talked to sprint and they say towers are fine/shouldn't be any problems and I'll be lucky to ever see 4g LTE in my area before my contract is up so they aren't scewing with the towers or are they? Conformation from someone else or this beautiful phone goes back... Lol, thanks...

I woulnt complain with those speed many people arnt even close to 1 mbps in many areas

Well during the day I get like .11 Mbps but all night I have amazing speeds, I can't even log in to facebook and sometimes xda, as it times out, just trying to figure out what's really going on...

Highest I've gotten in a few days is .06 mbps

Have you tried at like 2am? My speeds are dropping as we speak... Just trying to troubleshoot our phones, I'm a tech, that's what I do, I love this phone...
Edit .08Mbps down .56 up with five bars...

Has anyone had data issues and tried a different prl, say from another provider and gotten much better results?

Speeds are terrible almost nationwide right now. I recently flew to dc and my stopover in Atlanta also sucked, but Arlington was good.
I believe it is due to sprint rolling out their 3G network update. I haven't seen an ETA regarding its completion.

Data speeds are much slower than my OG Evo. I'm in Atlanta and I think some people have got LTE.....
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Network vision isn't getting here quick enough.. At 5am my speeds are 0.11Mb/sec.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
I talked to tech support yesterday regarding this issue...they are doing tower upgrades and it is affecting data speeds
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
My speeds seem to be about the same as the OG Evo.
Speed Test App varies from 1.5mbps to 2.0mbps.
I live in decently un-populated area of Michigan though. Most people are on Verizon here because they rolled out 4G LTE here a few months back.
I find it strange, when I talk to sprint in my area, they say it must be my phone, cause there aren't any updates here what so ever but I know it's not the phone, it gets amazing speeds at off peak times... And the other thing that bugs me is the signal strength doesn't correspond whatsoever to the data speeds I'm getting... Hopefully something/someone gets this cleared up cause technically it doesn't really make sense...

I get very inconsistent speeds through out the day; And when I spoke to Sprint, they gave the "towers are being upgraded" spiel. They also gave me this website to check which towers are being upgraded, or have been upgraded:
https:// network. sprint. com
*Note, they also gave me a $30 dollar credit on my next bill, which is a nice gesture, but I'd rather have better service.
I'm in Houston, and my 3g was acting up and my GPS put me in Joliet, I called sprint and they reset my service, powered phone off, powered phone on and reset my profile. so far, so good.
Edit: I couldn't send this post....dropped connection. I went to settings and set roaming to automatic and instant connection.

Ah totally forgot about that website. Thanks for the reminder. Looks like I'm getting 1 voice, 1 data speed, and 1 data capacity upgrade in the next six months and all at the two corners of my community... all right outside Verizon's socal HQ no less
I just spent 45 minutes on the phone with Sprint. Apparently they are getting a lot of calls with people complaining about data speeds on the 4G LTE.
The Sprint rep tried a bunch of things, but even though I'm showing three bars of signal, I have no Internet. It does work sometimes, just not at my phone or office!
She suggested taking it back to a Sprint store and having them reactivate my OG Evo until this phone gets fixed, either with some kind of software fix, or a new hardware version. She says they are logging all these issues, so they can figure out how to fix it.
I have the same issues (Chicago). Called Sprint last night and told them I'm not paying all this money to have 1990 speeds. They patched me over to Level 2 support (I think that's what they called it) and the guy told me that I didn't have data all day, actually. He did some kind of upgrade and everything popped into place. He asked if he solved my problem and I told him "Yeah... for NOW." We'll see how long it lasts. They have an open ticket for me to take the phone back to the Sprint store by close of business tomorrow if I want to have them test it or trade it. I asked them what for - the problem existed on two phones, it's the NETWORK! I also told them to remove the upgrade charge, which is a very small token for poor service... they did. I'm placated but not happy and I'm trying to be patient.
It could very well be your phone. The first one I had was having extremely slow data speeds and occasionally even dropped data connection, Sprint sent me a replacement phone and it has way better speeds than my original Evo ever did.

Sprint is really disappointing me. I've been through MetroPCS and Virgin Mobile which are prepaid and I was paying 40 a month unlimited everything and the speeds, and coverage are equal to Sprint and even better.. virgin mobile is running off of sprints towers and I was getting AMAZING speed, about 2 mbs all the time and peaked at 2.4 mbs.
Sprint has been in the game for a LONG time, but they must not know what they are doing or need a new CEO. Look at ATT, T-Mobile, and Verizon.. they are years ahead of Sprint..
I feel like im paying 100$ a month for just being able to use a badass phone that prepaid companies dont offer. I got better support/service using prepaid.. its sad.
today in school, my friend has his ATT Iphone 4s out and did a speedtest.. he was pulling off 5.5mbs!. I couldnt even start mine because i was on roaming with 0 bars... he had like 4/5 bars.. wtf... makes me extremely jealous
Anyone have any idea what could be behind the issues with Sprint and why things havent improved in the past 2 years?
Send them a message by canceling service and flashing your device to work on Metro.
If you don't tell Sprint (with your wallet) that there's something wrong, they will never hear your complaints.
Sprint has improved for me in the past 2 years. I'm in Chicago.

5.5mbs!? Man, he's gonna reach his cap in like 4.2 days of use. That's the plus with using Sprint, you can use your phone the whole month without having to worry about caps because... 1. They don't cap. 2. Even if they did, you still wouldn't hit it when you're pulling 56kbs.

Yes when I saw it my jaw dropped and yes your 100% right, lmao. I hope one day we will have speeds near this .. my 4G barely hit 6 mbs QQ
You need to buy a phone that meets your coverage needs. If your roaming in an area where your friends ATT has full service, and you spend a lot of time there, you need to switch.
I work in the wireless repair field, and i tell my customers to find a carrier that has coverage where they spend most of their time at, usually HOME and Work/school.
If your roaming in school you cant really complain about data speeds, as your not on Sprints Network.
I will agree that Sprint does have some 3G issues, could be over capacity, could be interference, could be a lot of things. But its intermitent for me and never prevents me from fully using my device.
The other day i got 2.3megs down at my apt.
The next morning eating breakfast near my office i had .2 megs down.
I deal with it because its a great unlimited plan, and its been reliable.
FYI, my personal phone is an EVO 3D, my work phone is an iPhone 4, Sure it gets 3-4 bars but it also drops a lot of calls. Cant say the same for my EVO 3D. Always reliable. So was the Epic Touch, Epic 4G and EVO 4G. Never had dropped call issues with them.
The 4G signal I get nearest to my home in Sacramento (Sadly it doesn't actually REACH my home) is typically about 12Mbit. Oddly enough, it's right near the Sprint store where I get these speeds. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.
The sad thing is, I still can't stream any Shoutcast stations (or SiriusXM) for **** on 4G, have to turn it off, then it streams perfectly over 3G. I hate WiMax.

Exactly what he said. I live in long beach ca 10 years with sprint no issues, and rarely use 4 have, stream everyday while I drive. best bet get whatever works in your most visited area

Well for me it's the opposite. At my house I get usable 4g. The 4g speeds are around 5-8 megabit. My 3g speeds is worse than 56k and I drop calls often.
I have an Airave where if I send too many text messages the recipient gets 10 copies of each text but on my phone it says it wasn't able to send the text.
The network.sprint.com site says there was 25 upgrades near my area within the last six months and another 25 in the coming six months..... But there is no signal or service quality difference.
It gets worse where I work. I used to get at least 150 kilobytes per second at work then it dropped down to 50 now I barley get 5. No 4g service but I can make and receive calls....
I have no one but to blame but me. I've dealt with Sprint for about 7 years.
You should not be complaining about your friend with that pile iphone4s that doesn't have any access to 4g....
My dad and I are on the Sero plan, 49 bucks a month for unlimited plan but with 500 minutes talk time. Who talks on the phone anymore?

Currently I can't afford home internet that is as good as his cell. I had 50mbit through Cox cable, now I have 3.
Manually install different PRL files until you get one that works good for you. Try 11115 specifically, it works great. Or if your tired of Sprint do what I did and flash to Verizon's 00001 to run off Verizon towers first before Sprint's.
On 00001 I get more than double the speed of Sprint at my apartment, and better signal. But at work I get 3x worse than Sprint speed was, although it is about the same cell signal. Its all about finding the one that works best for you.
Personally, while I've had some problems with Sprint, I enjoy the service. I put my phone the data hell, and while in some places I'll admit that I would appreciate having better coverage, the fact that I used only my phone for internet for two weeks (and did a ridiculous amount on it and still do) means that I trust Sprint. Plus, the places that I don't have service, AT&T doesn't have service, and I would have to deal with a data cap. A friend has Metro and hates it. I'll stick with Sprint. It works for me, I love my phone, and I get a great discount because of where I work.
Interesting and informative thread. My compliments to the contributors.
I'm actually surprised that none of the Sprint zealots seem to have made it into this thread to ream you for daring to speak poorly of their beloved carrier.
Great info about using the Verizon PRL's...their service data service here is consistent where as Sprint obviously couldn't care less about their customers in the NOLA area.
Thank you for your time.
Hey folks,
I have been checking all over the web, and have not found enough useful info. My 3g signal drops out at random times when I know I have a good signal. I have put it in only cdma mode. Done all the other stuff, and it still does this. I live in a no 4G area, and never had problems like this with my incredible. I am afraid it is my phone, but I think it is the network. I haven't rooted yet because of this. Has anybody else had this problem? All responses are welcome. Thanks

Some people are saying that since our connection is verified with the sim card that it is a network problem caused by issues Verizon is having. Watch the web when people state they have 4G issues and you are probably going to see 3G outages at the same time.

This. I read in our forums that because LTE phones use a SIM card, they have to go through a type of verification process with the network to latch onto LTE signal. As a result, when this is happening the 3G signal bottoms out because the phone is trying to latch onto LTE. The same is true for going from LTE to EVDO as well.
Something along those lines, at least

Have you tried replacing the SIM? If at all possible try walking out of Verizon without them activating the new SIM. Seems when ever I'm at a Verizon store someone is always waiting to have a 4G device activated. I had one instance with a SIM swap that took 30 mins @ the store. Now I just ask for a SIM replacement and tell them that I would activate via phone support when I get home. In my past experience, activation happen a lot faster away from a Verizon store loaded with queued activation requests.

I've had this issue since the Vigor came out. In 3g, I'd lose data completely. Only a reboot or airplane mode would fix it. I had new Vigor sent to me and the same problem. I've been through several sim cards ( I switch between my Vigor and Nexus often). I've talked to VZW more times than I care to mention and they've had no answers for me. They even sent techs to my area to see if it was a network problem. No luck. Just have to live with it I guess. My nexus doesn't do it. Still prefer the Vigor though.

I had the same problem...3G dropping randomly thoughout last weekend. I thought it was my Rezound so I activated my Droid Razr. Same thing. I'm in Southern Oregon. I called the local Verizon corporate store and asked if there were 3G problems and they didn't know. I think they really are a bit brain dead anyway. I can say I've two of their top line phones phones and both losing 3G once or twice an hour was really pissing me off. I NEED data, I was ready to cancel my service (unlimited data) and go with Sprint but thought better of it as I'm getting 3G constant now. Maybe Verizon has worked this out, I sure hope so.
I run juicedefender, which kills data when screen is off. I wonder if this has to do with it? Doesn't happen often, 3g will come on without a reboot after a few minutes.

I really do not think Juicedefender is the problem. I have BatteryCalibration (need to be rooted) and never had a problem. I haven't read anything about Juicedefender being the issue. I think it's Verizon, in fact with 2 phones having the same dropping in and out of 3g I sure of it.
Also a few minutes is not even close to acceptable to wait for data. I need data constantly, if your using Google Nav and you lose data your toast, streaming music your toast and I can think of a ton other reasons 3g should never be lost.
Most of Sunday and today I have not had an issue...makes you wonder.
I was using juice defender. I was also having problems with dropping 3 and 4g. Try not running it. Since I stopped I haven't had any drops.

From my understanding, it connects thru evdo. The Resound tries to connect thru 4g first, struggles, forcing 3g off, and in the process drops data. I take no credit for this. Pwned posted the link I think. You would get a better understanding if you read the link on page one. Hope that helps......

Yeah.. Call Sprint and ask for an Airave. Tell them exactly what you just said and they will send you one. I have one!
For anyone that doesn't know what an Airave is, Its a mini Sprint Cell Tower that uses your Internet to produce a cell tower like thing. It is FREE from Sprint (however if you cancel your Sprint account and do not return it they will charge you $140).
Long Story shorter the Sprint Airave will use your internet and produce "fake" 3G. It does not produce 4G, it does NOT help your Data speeds what so ever. It will give you full bars. All it does is give you perfect voice quality.
Although if you are in your Airave Cell signal and leave the call will drop. Other then that it is amazing! I love mine.

As some others have suggested, try and get an Airave. Call (877)775-4886 (Sprint Retentions) and tell them you get no service at home. I have one, it's great for the most part. As for the question someone posted about the random times it text bombs your recipient, it is true. It happens when you send and receive at the same time or send a second before the first has gone through. Other than that annoyance, they're well worth it. Hopefully the phone issue is something that can be fixed and a fix is in the works.

All this is true except for the bolded part. Currently I'm getting around 0.10Mb/sec download speeds with my EVO, connected to my Airave my speeds are around 2.5Mb/sec
If your coverage is really that bad get rid of Sprint..... Trust me that is the best thing to do.... You can try an airave also.... But make sure they give it to you for free....

I think Best Buy has a 14 or 30 day return policy so they would be able to swap it out for you if you are within the time frame.
I called Sprint about bad signal in my area (both my Evo LTE & Nexus S 4G are having signal problems) and they told me that because I have the new Evo LTE that it should be expected that I will have bad reception until they complete the LTE upgrades in my area (which is rumored to be this fall).
I told them that the signal issue was present on my other phone as well, so they put me on hold to research the problem, said they were going to connect me to a supervisor, and then I was on hold for another 40 minutes before the line disconnected on me.
Guess I'll have to try again later.

I just swapped out my 1 week old LTE at BB this morning and had no problems doing so. If I heard her correctly it is 30 day exchange, 14 day return.
I've been having major issues with SMS, MMS, data drops, and everything else not working correctly.
Basically told BB that I've been troubleshooting it with Sprint for the past week, done reprovisions, profile updates, factory resets and nothing worked (somewhat true to a point) and got swapped to a new LTE.
This new one is running great! The OS seems different than what was on my first LTE (even though it is the same version) and I've had it online now for 5 hours from the time of this post and my signal hasn't dropped, my data is still connected, and messages are coming though very quickly. Even my data speeds are back to what my 3D has that my wife is now pimping.
For me, it seems that I had a defective phone and the new one has fixed my issues (at least for now..)

I had this same issue. Chatted with CSR's etc, all the stuff you listed, nothing fixed it. I could call out - didnt get calls or txts in (texts came once a day or so in a huge properly time stamped group).
After taking it into a repair store - she reinstalled the OS, then reactivated/provisioned it. Been getting 1.5 - 2.5mbs in the evening hours now

Im on my second Evo and its no better than the first. Im constantly missing calls, losing data connection, etc. I just called in to Sprint and the stupid CSR tried to tell me it was the service area I was in. Well, Ive been driving all over the place all morning and within a 50 mile radius, Ive missed 3 calls. No notification, phone doesnt even try to ring.. I just get a voicemail notification.
I dont know what to do. I have 7 days left to leave Sprint on this 14 day window. All I want is a phone that works and it seems like everything Sprint has come out with in the last year has sucked.

I have to agree. Its got to be because they just dont do much CDMA stuff. I hear minimal complaints about their GSM devices.
So since everyone else has started their threads on LTE in their area I decided to start my own on why I cannot get any what so ever. I am truly disappointed as j waited for July 15 just like everyone else yet failed to receive any 4G. I have updated my prl my profile rebooted my phone even hard reset it all to no avail. It makes me wonder am I the only one without any LTE. I live by the I10 and 610 intersection. Your responses will be greatly appreciated!

None in Sugar Land either, 99 & 90 area.
LTE live on the northeast of Houston
Sent from my HTC Evo LTE
LTE live at hwy 6 and 529
I've been trying since Sunday and have only connected to LTE briefly twice. Once in the medical center and once by my house on the NW side of town, near West Rd. & Queenston. Both times were standing outside and I had to update profile in order to get the signal. I tried a speed test and was getting ~2.4 mbps down before losing the signal.
I'm not impressed. Hopefully it'll get better soon...
Nothing in Kingwood either. According to S4GRU http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/212-network-visionlte-deployment-running-list/ Houston is only 14% complete. Pretty weak launch numbers. If you are a contributor to the site you can see where the live towers are.
I'm in the same area as you and i get it. I stay near northshore senior high campus. But drove through i10 and 610 and held signal until getting off at Lockwood exit.

yeah, being a sponsor at s4gru.com, it seems that the current coverage is VERY thin..should be much better in a couple of weeks when sprint accepts more towers from the vendor.
There is LTE in Houston, but it is very very spotty. I get it outside of my work building, but nowhere near my home in Montrose, nor in the Medical Center. I drove from Bellaire to Westheimer and Fountain View with not one 4G signal along the way. WTF?! Sprint is dropping the ball big time.

I caught 4G at the end of kingwood drive near riverwood on 7/15. Measured about 8/3.
Edit: OP, seriously, just chill. They turned on *some* towers on 7/15, but they're nowhere near done. Estimated 100% completion for houston is february 2013. Don't get all pouty about a brand-new service that you haven't been able to use yet. Very, VERY few of us have stable LTE connections.
No 4g for me out here in the Wilcrest/Briar Forest area.
Here is what I got on I-10W about to get to downtown:

I got 4G from downtown to ~610 on I-10W. I noticed that I had to toggle airplane mode when it got stuck on 3G in order to get it back to 4G.
No LTE on the east side. I was able to get LTE for one minute yesterday July 15th around I-10 and Taylor. Here is the speedtest I took when I had LTE for one minute.

vendors... do remember there are three. From what I have "heard" there are also a number of towers ready to go, just waiting on one key element
I second that...give it a few weeks and even beyond that...it is going to continue to get better from here..

The maps still showed "coming soon" last I checked. The media had kind of run wild with the limited soft launch information Sprint provided...has left consumer expectations very high. I am sure Sprint wants it up and running just as quickly as the customers do.
Everyone concerned with lte should follow and actually read the developments of the network that s4gru.com posts and chill out.
Example as follows (credit to Robert most definitely for his tweets and the entire S4GRU site)

No, vendor. There are three vendors, but only one in the Houston market. The vendors dont seem to share markets.
I do get where u are coming from. And Robert has a point as well. But from what everyone is going through I really don't blame them for being a bit frustrated. This isn't even a decent launch. From what I hear no one is getting constant lte. If this was a month ago then it would be understandable but not for a hyped up nationwide launch.

I've been calling every day, every day they tell me no data outages in my area. Have another Sprint user in my building getting same speeds. I've resorted to installing a 3G roaming PRL because they simple won't do anything about it. Before 9/4 the data was fine, slow at times, but I could at least stream Pandora, etc...

Sorry that's so hard to see... but it's less than 100kbps download on almost ALL of them... It's slower than 56k modem most of the time. I have 3G symbol with 4/6 bars and never had bad data like this in the location before 9/4/2012.
Well you could hold your breath or move to city with lte... Jk but yeah I feel ya on the slow data.

Ever heard of "Sprint Vision"? Maybe its happening in your area now.
via EVO.
This is usually what happens when you contact Sprint for issues:
A Speedtest screenshot would've done this justice .vs the off centered text.

Is it common that when the roll out vision data speeds go to crap before they get better? It's funny as it only seems to be in this 2 mile range around my work. By my house, I'm getting 3G speeds above 1400kbps (which I've never got before). I've told Sprint that, told them that I've updated my profile, basically told them everything and that I just want them to tell an engineer despite what their system shows, that their is slow data in this address range... Still nothing.
Guess I'll just get my contract terminated for roaming...

In the Speedtest Application, just hit the "RESULTS" tab below & it'll give you every run, (date + time, download, upload & ping)
I'm well aware of that, but I wanted more results than that displays, so I exported to CSV. I've fixed the first post so it was better formatting.

I have read that speeds can be affected during the switch over. In my personal experience, it also depends on geographic location. I live in Lake Worth FL, I get 2mb down and almost 900kb up from my house on 3g. Now, I work in North Miami Beach, I'm lucky if I get 100kb down and 3 kb up down here, even on 5 bars. This is even before the LTE rollout. Just because you have a good signal, doesn't mean your data will be fast. I think some areas may be over subscribed, they just don't have the bandwidth available for all their devices in some areas. Hopefully this will get better as they rollout LTE in my area.
If they are upgrading to vision it would be more likely that your speeds would fluctuate rather then stay at a constant low. They may be repairing towers in that area and pushing the load onto remaining towers. That essentially cripples available bandwidth. Had to put up with a similar issue for almost 3 straight months. They should tell you if there are any repairs or improvements being done. Have you tried having your call escalated?

+1 on this. That was going to be my recommendation as well.
CR will probably credit you which looks like you are entitled with the crappy service. And yes, data gets worse during NV upgrades, especially when they are working on the backhaul to the towers. It gets worse before it gets better then you will know its almost time to light up LTE. in short, nothing much more you can do other than leave Sprint but I'm thinking it will be regretted in the end.

Uh, fix it. No one should have data this slow consistently. Every single second. I understand periods of slowness, but this is absurd.
And, it looks like they fixed it last night... Back to normal 400-600kbps.
I've had data that slow at home for close to 15 months, all I got was an Airave (sounds like a motto on a t-shirt).

lol there are places that have had data that slow for 2+ years now with no fixes from sprint.
Get an Airave!, I just moved to a remote area of Hawaii, no data and 1bar at best. Two days after calling for an airave I recieved it. Now 5bars and full 3g. Best part is its free!
