Custom kernel is needed for FM function. Now that unlocked bootloaders are possible so are custom kernels, so it is possible.

Isn't there transmitter hardware that is supposed to compliment the FM Radio, does the the Atrix actually have that?
If not then I doubt that its actually possible. Streaming maybe, but that's no fun...

I believe I saw a topic that the atrix is capable but its not activated. If I can get the transmitter going then I can get rid of my ipod.

Unlock bootloader

Hello everyone i tried looking around this forum but cant find what i need do i need to have the bootloader unlocked to have root access and whats the safest way to root my device
Sent from my MB855 using XDA
Unlocking the bootloader and rooting the phone are two separate processes, and you don't need one to have the other.
As far as root methods and the rest, have you looked here? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1393519

Unlocking the bootloader allows you to load roms like CM7, CM9, MIUI - anything that uses a custom kernel. It also allows you to load up a custom recovery.

For now, the only Motorola smartphones scheduled to get ICS in 2012 are thr Photon 4G, Atrix 4G and Atrix 2 starting in July. The rest of Motorola's lineup, including the Droid 4 and Droid Razr Maxx are in the evaluation and planning stage, and that means there is no guarantee they will be updated.

question about GB bootloader

when you flash to stock GB (EH09, i believe [2.3.5]) do you have the gb bootloader or not?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA
Nope, you need to flash it separately. Its floating around here somewhere.

makes absolutely no difference unless your flashing the glitch kernel...even then all it does is allow the glitch splash screen on boot to function.

Actually it has been advised in glitch thread, seems there are other features that depend on it:

yes i read that, but have you tried both bootloaders with that skunkworks kernel and seen any difference? i currently am using gb bootloaders but all im saying is I dont see a difference and it shouldnt have anything to do with having problems flashing kerns. jt1134 said along time ago that gb bootloaders do nothing more than froyo variants.

I hear ya, and I too know jt's take on the subject but when the glitch guys say to flash them or don't bother posting bugs I gotta heed their advice. And no I haven't tried skunk yet but back around m4 I ran without gb bootloaders and all was fine. I'm still on b31 ha! Just been too lazy (and satisfied) to move forward, but I probably will now to check out the new hybrid UI.

Fm radio on ics

You're shocked because the radio isn't working on a hacked release of the ROM? You may just have to wait until the official ICS update is released for it to work.
Well, since the same hardware is going to be on VM, I would think the same software would be there.
Has anyone tried restoring the old one from a backup to see if it'll work?
Just tried pushing the 3 required system apps over to /system and they showed up after reboot but just FC'd.

The fm radio app built into one of the Roms I flashed fc when run. I wonder if HTC removed the fm radio chip from the VM version of the 3d to cut costs.
EDIT: Found a working APK: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26103386&postcount=240

The radio App was not build into my ICS. I've since installed, but the Widget is missing.
The radio app can be executed only.
Anyone has ICS with an addable widget?

[Q] Is there any way to root without unlocking the bootloader?

I basically only care about rooting so I can access apps like Sixaxis Controller, WiFi Tether, and other, similar "root only" applications. I'm not really interested in putting new ROMs on the phone or anything, and I'd really like to keep my warranty. Is there any way to root the DNA without voiding my warranty by unlocking the bootloader?
Patience. It is being worked on. Believe me it will be posted and talked about here as soon as it is ready

Almost all of their phones can be unlocked via their website, except that it voids your warranty.
