Is there any way to get the activation fee waived? If so, what should I say when i call in to get it removed?
Call me cheap, but $20 is just s stupid fee for really doing nothing. At least that's what it seems like to me.
Then again, why should I complain, I got a free airrave with no monthly fees, a $70 credit for sticking with Sprint for 2 years, $158 for my OG evo, 20% discount for my work, 2 $50 credits because of the BS spending limit program, and I'm about to call in to get 300 bonus minutes on my plan per month. To top it all off, I have the best phone on the market!
But I still wanna be cheap, somebody help me out with this
Yes just call and say they they charged you. If they say sorry we can't waive it tell them you will return it and buy it online. Online it says free shipping and activation for new lines and upgrades.

Probably since you get the work discount you might be able to get it waived. Just call customer service. My waived activation about 4 months ago came when i got my 18% discount for going to a university.

can you get a combined discount for going to school + working?
btw thanks I'll try to get it waived, get my 300 bonus minutes, and get my MSL code for a 3g fix.
Ok, I got my MSL code and my 300 bonus minutes, but I couldn't get my damn activation fee waived. I told them I was charged an activation fee and wasn't informed of it until after the charge (which is true), but they said there was a block on my account for pending adjustments under review..
I think this is BS because the dumb ***** on the phone gave me my MSL code, put me on hold for five minutes, then told me her supervisor told her she couldn't give out the MSL code. SO I said what's this number you just gave me then, and I said the number to make sure she knew I still had it. She tried to cover it up by saying it was the wrong number, that it was for the other phone on my account (which is an airrave ya dumb *****) and so I was just like ok... She said she couldn't even have access to the code or anything, so I was just like yea right. When i hung up I performed the 3g fix with the number she gave me. Sprint reps are sooo dumb sometimes. I'm just going to call back in soon for my activation fee.
Nahh. I don't think you're being cheap. I'm a stoner so I'll be trying to save that extra 20 as well. Better to spend it on a gram than a silly activation fee lol. I don't even know why they charge people for that crap. Hopefully you find a way.

Try the online chat to get the activation waived. I agree, activation fees are gay. $20 just to click a button. Gay, gay, gay.
When I called for my MSL code today I asked the ladyfor it, she provided it to me, I said thanks I'm done, she said "really?", I said yes, she said okay, I said thanks and hung up. I then proceeded to do the speed and 4G hacks.
But activation fees are still gay.

ACTUALLY you're wrong. completely wrong. there are activation fees online. and over the phone. calling in and getting it credited back to you is the ONLY way to get it waved.

Weird....I bought my 3VO at midnight during the premier pre-order.... I used the same card as I have linked to pay my bill....
Here's what's weird .... They posted the 239ish as an account credit in addition to giving me a credit of $70 for extending my contract....so now, today, instead of owing spring money, I have a credit of around 150.....
Did this happen to anyone else? Seems like I essentially got the 3VO for free, plus the $70 credit.....you'd think they would have, figured that out.....I'm not gonna be the one to tell them!

the phone wont get billed to your account until the next billing cycle
Dont get to excited, I bought the evo3d and had $230 credit, I also thought I got lucky!.. Then 2 days ago they updated it and now I owe. lol
Yet you could still get to keep it, you never know! Good Luck!
Yeah my payment showed on the bill but it adjusted after a week.
That is how Telesales does it
When you order and pay, they apply the payment to your account. When your next billing cycle comes, they then bill your account.
I would advise still paying your account as normal, otherwise, you will owe.
Telesales always does this.
I had a payment due of 18 bux, but I still posted by 235 payment, now shows a credit of 216.. I know it will catch up.. I have been through this before.. that is how it works (I have 5 lines and airave).
To the op what happen is someone renewed the contract on one of you lines to get the $70 credit. They will not fix it. If it was done on the line with you 3d it was in customer service rep error but it will not be charged back to your acct. I work at sprint and have done this a few times and got wrote up for it but it never affected the customer.

For starters, there is a screen app that works without root
And 2nd, why would you need a screen app anyway? If you got credited it for it,all you do is log in to your account from a COMPUTER, and take a small pic of your bill with the EVO 3D price in the credit column, instead of showing that they charged you for it.
I mean its really easy to type hey i ordered 2 evo's and sprint gave them to me for free. #imjustsaying
Now of course mistakes can happend and do happen But what is sounds like REALLY happened is, you ordered the evo and actually paid for the phone. Since you paid with credit card, of course it will come up as a credit because its a payment. Now for you to actually 'get the phone for free',you need to see another item on your bill (or not). The first item of 239 or so should be when you paid credit card, the next item(which might not come for a week or so, or next bill) is an item actually charging an evo 3D to your account.
Now for you to actually 'get the evo for free', you should see NO charge for the price of the evo, OR you should see a charge/price for the evo, but put in the credit column. WHich basically means if you paid 239 by credit card, but the evo item charge came and and it was a credit, you should actually see $578 of credit (since you paid for a phone AND they credited the price of an evo to you). Most people chose to have the phone billed to their account instead of paying so this 'free' evo wouldnt apply to us.
Im pretty sure that didnt happen, and they simply didnt charge the phone to your account yet.

It's been 5 days since I purchased my Gnote for $300. I was able to get the activation fee waived and an additional 22% off my total bill thanks to being casino worker.
I went to Fry's yesterday to pic up a micro sd card and found they had the Gnote on sale for $229.
I immediately called AT&T and requested a $70 credit. At first the agent told me to "return the phone" and buy the one that's cheaper. I told him I don't want to pay a $35 restocking fee. Puts me on hold. He then says he would credit me $35. I stood firm and again said that I would like a full $70 credit. Puts me on hold again. He then says "I see you got an employee discount already". I interrupted him and said I don't want to talk about my employee discount I want to talk about getting a $70 credit back. For the 3rd time he puts me on hold. Finally he says where I got the discounted price, asked for the addresss of the store and even mentions that it shows Fry's is selling it for $279. I just about lost my patience but I lied and told him "I'm here at the store and they have them in stock for $229 and not for $279" He pauses a few seconds and then says "OK I will credit you $70".
So if it's been less than 30 days since you bought your Gnote for $300 as a new customer. Check your local Fry's store to see if they have it on sale. Call customer care and request a credit. Be prepared for them to do everything they can to prevent you from getting a credit but just be patient and keep at it on your request.
most agents i know give in easily. att bases our sales payouts on 24 hour resolution. so if a customer calls back within 24 hours for whatever reason it affects the agents score. so a lot of them just give in to avoid a customer that will call back. that's what a lot of people i speak with tell me they have to do to get sales payouts.

Yep been with them for 4 yrs, and If I want something I ask for it, I got mine from best buy for $250, and asked them to match the ATT $150 sale price, they took out another $100.
Frys Electronics sale today for 199. Called customer service and they gave me 100 bill credit. Just say you were told to get the credit and then they will ask their manager to honor it.
I got a 100$ credit !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
I called and told them a ATT rep at the store told me to call Customer Care and tell them I need my 100$ credit and it worked . It took about ten mins.
Damn I could really use a $100 credit. I bought mine not from a direct ATT store though, just an ATT licensed store. Do you think it would work? What do you guys suggest I say..?

Booyakasha!
Just called now, got a $100 credit in literally less than 3 minutes. All I said was "Hi I'm just calling to get a credit on my recent purchase for my samsung note. The Att rep that I bought the phone from told me to call in to receive a credit due to Fry's having the phone on sale for $199" She immediately said absolutely, asked for my account info, asked for my purchase price, and applied the $100 credit to my account right away. No getting put on hold, nothing. She said the credits usually take 24-48 hours to show up online so I'll double back with the report to confirm.
Seriously though (assuming this goes through), thanks so much guys. I literally spent pretty much all I had on this phone so this $100 will go a long way for a college student.

Just a friendly warning, the sale seems to be linked to specific zip codes. The link in the OP is setup for Garfield NJ, 07026 and the one I actually used was for Spring TX. If I updated the zip to my real zip code, the sale price is $149. Their system will also AUTOMATICALLY make your City, State, zip that of which the link takes you to.
Now I placed my order, realized the address issue and will contacted them tomorrow to modify my address. Not sure if that will effect the price I pay BUT one thing is for sure, its not going to cost me $217 either way.
I'll update here after I get the address corrected and confirm my price after. I figure I'll give it a day in their system to get to stick and then update the address.
I ordered yesterday for $149.99
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
It should be noted that there is a $37 activation fee from Sprint.
I changed the zipcode to mine (here in chicago) and it kept the $119.99 price. And yes, there is a $36 activation fee, but this is still cheaper than $150 if you figure in the $10 google wallet credit...
$119.99
$36
-$10
-----------
$145.99
Not bad at all. Not the $10 I paid for my evo a few days before christmas (price match + rebate), but flipping that, I should net under $50 or less for the whole thing.
EVO for $99.99 if you have Bank of America
Log into your bofa account and click on the add it up link. click on cell phone deals and bofa will credit your account $50 if you buy using their link. I tried getting the $119.99-$50 add it up, but it won't work.
One or the other.
By the way, to get the $119.99 deal, do a google search for "wirefly friends and family" and click on the first non-ad link.
So to summarize, $119.99 if you don't have bofa
or
$99.99 if you have bofa using the add it up link.

How will they know? You don't activate through them. You buy from them, tell them it's for the upgradable line, then when you get it, you activate through Sprint and have them so the switch. Wirefly is out of the picture once you have the device.

Why is there an activation charge?
How is this any different than buying a phone off of Craigslist and getting it activated?
Edit:
Does Sprint charge $37 activation even if you get it from them anyway?
(If so, then this isn't an issue. Gotta pay it either way, right?)

Because you need to "activate" it on the carrier and it's no different, you would be paying the same charge no matter where you get the phone. Now, the activation fee did double but that puts Sprint in line with the other carrier's activation/upgrade fees and adds more cash to the "fix the network" pot.
*Activation is $36

I had this same intention. I called Wirefly and they do NOT let you use another line's upgrade for your own (idk why thats what he said). You would have to swap the upgradeable line with yours like others have said. Part of the reason is because their policy is to activate it themselves (I asked them if they could hold off on the activation, the guy said no) so its running by the time it gets in your hands

This doesn't entirely make sense. If you're upgrading, that would mean your existing device stops functioning when they activate the new one. This is obviously not acceptable. I'm quite confident you actually have to call in and activate it once you receive the device. THEN your old device stops functioning. Now if you're buying a new line of service then it may arrive activated (though past purchases from amazon for tmobile did require activation AFTER receipt of device).
ymmv.
Wirefly has a ad on its front Page saying free activation wheb adding a line or doing a new activation.
Food for thought to make it a even better deal...

I read a rumor that the $36 activation fee can be waved if you provide Sprint with your AAA card. Anyone done this?
does anyone know of any other way to avoid this "tax"?
I just pre-ordered the EVO LTE and will supposedly be charged the fee upon activation. Do I need to go into a Sprint store and show them my AAA card? Can I do this over the phone? Does it even work?
Thanks.
Idk about AAA. But I am going to try to get the fee waived upon activation by saying I stuck with my sprint order even though I could have got it cheaper through wirefly.

I'm going to be upgrading to the same plan but was out of luck when trying to get the fee waived. Even mentioned how SERO members are forced to upgrade through sprint when wirefly and Best Buy are offering much better promotions on the same product..
Maybe another representative will yield better results.

I'll have to try this when my phone comes in and I activate it.
Thanks
Just and FYI since I said I would report back. I called Sprint and I asked about my activation fee and he initially said that I would have to pay it. I explained that I ordered through sprint even though I could have gotten the phone much cheaper through a 3rd party and I would appreciate it if they would wave the fee to help offset the cost difference. He put me on hold for 1 minute came back and said the activation fee has been waved.
Maybe this route can help some who ordered through Sprint.
To clarify about the AAA activation fee waiving:
You MUST have the AAA discount as your account's discount in order to use this. In other words, if you have an employer discount you use to get 15% off your bill every month, then THAT discount plan must include the fee waiver to get the waiver. You couldn't just flash your AAA card and get it.
So, if you have the AAA as your discount, you will receive 10% monthly off your bill, and waived activation fees. But you cannot mix and match, sadly. I talked to Sprint about this yesterday. Kind of disappointed... I don't want to pay $36 for no reason.

Guess I need to try this route as well. Knowing my luck, I'll get a 'no' person.
It wont hurt to ask when you call to activate it. The worst that could happen is they tell you no and charge you. The best is they wave the fee. I went with 119.00 on wirefly so I can't use the " went with Sprint" argument. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

oh well
we shall see if my txt chat skills are up to this challenge once this "ESN storage fee" hits my bill.
If I lose I may ask them to explain how activating my phone costs them money, seems like they ESN goes into the system then blam that is all, once the ESN is in the system I can deactvate and active a month later without a fee, just curious if they have a legitimate reason for the fee,

If you get a "no" person just hang up and call back. Someone will do it for sure. I got it on first try so you will get it.

Would this work?
What if a person with a sero plan (gets free activation) activates your phone on their line, then takes it off.
Now that you're phone's ESN is in their system, you'd be able to switch back to your own phone at no charge (avoiding the activation fee)
You could also call top tier CS. I called the regular CS line earlier today and was denied even after telling them I would just cancel and go to Best Buy he brought a manager on the manager said "we can't waive it so I suggest purchasing it at Best Buy"(Wow really). Called Top Tier CS and with no hassle the lady said she will waive the activation fee and follow up next week to make sure it wasn't added and if I have issues to call back and reference call today.
The number is: 1-866-727-0665
Just ask for account services once they answer

Thanks for the posting. I too called customer service and got the nope-nope-nope line. I don't understand how Amazon can get the activation waived, yet the person at Sprint today told me it is impossible. Every upgrade requries the $36 fee. I got a tough cookie on my first try.
I never have good luck. Should have waited for Amazon to list the phone. What happened to the days where everybody had the same price on launch day (maybe a $10 difference).

Amazon looks like the same link to "free activation" as Wirefly and others...it appears to only be good on NEW LINE activations. Anybody confirm this is not the case? That would certainly be another argument to make with S after I get the phone. I have BofA corp rate....and I have usually gotten the activation removed (5 lines...over 15 years with Sprint)....but not on the Evo3D's. Grr.

Thanks.

To answer your question the AAA membership will NOT waive upgrade fees, but It will waive the Activation fees. Meaning, if you are signing up with Sprint AAA will waive the fee but if you are a current Sprint customer, upgrading to a new device, unfortunately it will not waive the fee. That said, the AAA discount must be active on the account prior to you coming into the store for an upgrade or AT the time of purchase when signing up with Sprint. It will also save you 10% a month and like someone else has previously stated, you cannot mix discount so if you already have a discount the AAA will not apply.
For some slightly better news, if you go with the Credit Union membership discount, that WILL waive ALL fees, activation AND upgrade fees. It will also save you 10% a month. You just need to be a part of ANY credit union, BECU, Alaksa ect...

You are correct. If you are upgrading an existing line on Amazon you will still be charged the $36.00.
I know this because I called Sprint today. Tried to get them to waive activation fee, they would not again, but I was able to get them to cancel my preorder. So I ordered from Amazon instead (always been a fan w/ no hassle). Still saving $64.00 ($50 on phone & $16 on tax).
I'm sure many of you, like myself, are sick of paying the $37 activation phone every time you upgrade your phone.
Well I just had an idea, to maybe, perhaps, get the fee waived.
What if we just go to Sprint/Bestbuy, use the upgrade to buy the phone.. and then tell them NOT to activate it?
THEN.. once you're home, call Spring from your device and say "hey, I just bought a new phone that I'd like to use on my account please" (like how you would do with a phone bought from Craigslist.)
Since they don't charge you anything for swapping phones, maybe they won't charge you here either?
What do you guys think?

Impossible. No such thing as a $37 activation fee.
Impossible. If you buy at BestBuy they have to activate it for you.

I believe they have to activate it in the store. Not certain, but I'm pretty sure that's a requirement. Also, I ordered min thru telesales and i was informed it came with a free activation! Maybe they can do something for you

would that work though? Because your account may have been flagged once the phone is shipped/picked up that there is an upgrade pending. When you call in to sprint for 'swapping' they might see that its a new model and charge regardless.
Your plan might work though. That's what I was planning to do just pick it up from BB and call when I'm home. I didnt know you have to activate it there.

I'm 100% certain you don't have to activate in the store because last time I used 2 upgrades to get the Evo 3D and the Galaxy SII (Epic Touch or whatever), and I never got the Galaxy activated. I just sold it on Craigslist immediately.
Unless of course.. they changed it in the last half a year or so.

Best Buy won't sell you a $550 phone for $200 just because they are so nice. They get commissions from Sprint that cover the difference and few bucks for the store. In order to get commissions, they need to extend contract and activate the phone with their dealer code. So, activating the equipment is a requirement. If someone lets you walk away without activating a phone, they just made $400 mistake.
I think I may be able to clear this up. Anytime you upgrade with Sprint at a third party retailer (Radio Shack, Best Buy, Sprint Indirect Retailer, etc) they will use a system called SNAP.
In SNAP, when an upgrade is processed a $36 upgrade fee is automatically triggered on the account, or at time of purchase if it is ordered. This cannot be waived manually by any rep. The system just forces it. Whether the phone is activated or not, your still going to get charged the fee.
For example, if you ever order a device from a Sprint Indirect dealer and have the phone shipped to your house and never activate, you will still get that upgrade fee. Even if you were to throw that phone in the river as soon as UPS hands it over to you and never active it, ever.
So: the actual activation of the device does not warrant the upgrade fee, the fact of you using your upgrade and resigning the 2 year agreement does. Thats why it is officially called an "upgrade" fee. An activation fee is when you initially sign up with Sprint.
Hope that helps.
I called Sprint retention department recently before I preordered from Amazon and asked them specifically about the activation fee and she was willing to waive it for me. What she did tell me though was they could not pre-emptively waive it. It needs to go through and to charged to my account first, then I can call in again and have them take it off.

Hate to break it to you, but this will NOT work. The reason you can swap other phones w/o charge is that they have been active on atleast one other account prior to yours. I can tell you this from exp I fought them on 3 fees for a week due to this. The phone had been on a friends account prior. now if you were to buy it from CL or Ebay, after it has been active on another acct first then you would not be charged.

this is spot on and worded perfectly. Also, Bestbuy now uses BEAST only for processing new activations and upgrades instead of SNAP (i believe to track margin) but still has access to SNAP for other changes.

You want to avoid the activation fee here is how. Buy the phone at full price, or ebay price from a reseller. Once you get the phone go on your Sprint account and do the online activation.
If you want that $199 price you are going to pay the activation fee, it'll get charged to your bill.
Open a credit union account, credit union discount waives activation fee.

I called and asked them to waive it due to the delay in shipping, and they did
I called in account services as recommended else where in this thread.
What they offered me was a credit equal to the base rate - my employee discount if I extended the contract for another year. This extension is for the contract only and does not affect my equipment upgrade dates. Once I do upgrade the equipment, the date then gets pushed back another year from the time of activation (so the usual 24 months after activation). I only have one line with them with a MRC of $69.99+10 (no discount on the $10 though). I still have ~6 months on my current contract too.
I decided to go ahead with the offer since they're still the cheapest around here, and hopefully once lte roll out is completed, data will improve too. This credit cancels out the activation fee and a little more.
ymmv, but at this point I think they'll be making concessions to most customers, even those who in the past may not have qualified.

That was my plan after I got my phone. Ask for a refund due to the hassle. Shouldn't be too difficult to get someone to credit it.
i dont pay activation fees. its part of my corp. discount w/ accenture.
it doesnt matter where i buy the phone. i got an evo3d via amazon 1 cent sale and a second one at radio shack for 49.99. they didnt even attempt to add it to my bill. the guy at radio shack mentioned it, but when i got the bill, there was no fee.
some others offer this too. aaa for example.

This is a good idea but if you have worked for Sprint you know that just placing the phone on the account will generate that $36. It's just labeled an activation fee. It literally takes nothing to activate a phone. Just a simple "hey let me use your connection" from your phone to the Sprint Network and then Sprint replies with a "well let me make sure your on an account via your dec number" then boom! the phone is connected.
that though sadly is not what generates the fee its the simple act of placing the phone on an account. Seriously go buy a phone via upgrade then dont activate it till after you recieve your bill. you will still see that fee on there even though your phone is still in the box. (not that anyone will do this) haha
Whenever you purchase a new phone that has never been activated before, you ALWAYS pay a one time activation fee. After that you can swap it from phone number to number and you will no pay it again. Is a one time thing.(I called Sprint twice and both reps said the same thing)
I just got my fee waived via a "promotional" discount the CS rep said they had. Not sure if that's true. I also used some info found in Ramit Sethi's scripts. Worth a call or two to get it waived.
I ordered my phone online, activated it online, and was still hit with the activation fee. Their bullsh!t excuse when I emailed them wad that they have to do such things to keep the subsidized prices on the phones low... to which I replied that I paid full MSRP and if I had bought it second hand, there'd be no activation fee. I concluded saying that I may never buy a phone through Sprint again. It has been escalated and I've been playing phone tag with someone higher up. I'll post back with how it turns out.
