So I've done some searching and reading here lately, and I have just a few questions before I finally make this leap. I'm ecstatic that the BL is finally unlocked. This is great!
First, I do some traveling and I love being able to plug a device in to a hotel TV and get decent video quality. Is the multimedia dock the only way to allow this? Specifically, I'm looking at streaming Netflix or Hulu. I usually don't travel with DVDs on my storage card, but I suppose I can if that's the only option here.
Second, how does anyone with the LapDock like it? I personally see myself using this quite a bit, as it would make life easier at work with a larger interface and full keyboard. Do you find it too cumbersome to travel with? Ideal when you'll be in one place for longer periods of time?
How's the video chat capability? With some travel, I like to be able to call my son when on the road. Does the front cam give decent quality?
Is there any video chat capability with the lapdock? I don't see a cam on the front of it, so I'm curious if the USB ports are usable with a webcam. This would also be ideal for the quick video conferences for work.
I've been waiting and waiting for something better to come along. However, a refurbed Atrix for $50, and a refurbed lapdock for $175 is pretty tough to pass up. Both for $225...or brand new for $300 after rebate.
Thanks for any help and insight.

There´s a hdmi mirroring mod and i think it will be includen in the custom roms coming soon so you dont need a dock

I like it very much and with the ability to use full ubuntu its great, having a little pc everywhere you go and just plug it in to a tv is really great

AFAIK ther´s no cam in the dock but with the hdmi mirroring you can video chat on a tv, i dont know if you can plug in a webcam but with full ubuntu it should be possible
My advice: BUY IT
i dont think hdmi mirroring or webtop via hdmi is working YET in 2.3.4, but in 1.8.3 you are golden on both. with full ubuntu, there is no reason you couldnt use a webcam with the lapdock that i can think of, its essentially a computer, so as long as linux drivers are available for whichever webcam you choose to use, it should work.
Awesome! Thanks guys. Now to pull the trigger and get this thing ordered.
Just want to give my input on the lapdock. Its incredibly thin. and its a nice size. I picked up a refurbished unit from At&t for about 175.
Charges your phone too. I slapped debian on it, and it runs really nice!

Great to hear! I've been thinking about putting the full distro on there as well. I think this is a great concept and a fantastic start, even if there are some bugs/issues/features to address. I think this basic function and form will be around for a while, or at least I hope so.
On the dock, I'm assuming you've addressed the APN issue to take a grandfathered unlimited plan? That's my biggest concern: keeping unlimited data and being able to use webtop. I've read the dev forum, and it seems no one is having any issues with this, which is great.
I have unlimited. You just need to apply the tethering hack found in the dev forum, and you'll be able to keep your unlimited data!
By the way, if you're scared of receiving a bad refurbished dock, don't be. My dock looks and acts brand new

I've had pretty good luck with the refurbs before. Mine have always been brand new, but I've bought refurbs for others, and they've been flawless. I was a bit worried with the Atrix, but when I talked to my sales guy the other day he was telling me about 80% of the docks he sells are returned within 30 days. That gave me the idea to look at refurbs, and 175 isn't bad!
You'll have to get it online for the discount I believe. Free shipping too.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
Yeah, that's usually how the refurbs work. I was just saying I got the idea from the salesman who said he's seen a lot returned. Now to just make sure they don't change my data plan That's always easier in the store!

I got mine today as well.
It is much faster than I imagined, and even performs better than in the video walkthroughs I have seen online. A great selection of applications was included (this is my first Android device outside a Nook Color).
It felt heavy at first, but I played with it for 2-hours straight and never got tired from holding it. Definitely easier to hold than an iPad (I owned one).
HTC Watch is up an running, although no sign of OnLive... yet. I hope it comes.
Besides the pen, no case or sleeve was included either. I would have liked the case to be included at least. Like it wasn't bad enough I had to buy the pen!
I haven't even opened the pen yet, as I am enjoying using the tablet without it.
The screen is almost TOO bright, even at the lowest setting. In a mildly lit room, it can be blinding.
It came 50% charged and I have been using it for around 2.5-hours and just hit 15%, although I was hammering it pretty hard, testing everything out, and syncing all my emails, contacts, calendars, and music.
More to come...
Can anyone with a pen take a screenshot or PNG of your most normal note taking? Like how you would write on it in say a meeting or class.
It would be greatly appreciated.

I'd like to root for tools like titanium backup, and to kill the cell standby process eating up my battery. I could be wrong, but I don't think rooting will affect the 3.1 update.
Just walked out of Best Buy with my new Flyer. Played with the demo unit and stylus, and I was VERY impressed at my ability to take legible notes and mark up documents. I have a week of vendor demos coming up at work, and I will put this thing through its paces marking up their white papers electronically. The Flyer is going to be a keeper!
I am really impressed with.mine.

Loving mine as well
Google Music Beta works well BTW, especially handy as Pandora isn't really optimized for this screen size/resolution.
Got mine as well. Nice device, but the camera quality is terrible.
Got mine today, unfortunately it's got a stuck pixel Trying to decide if I should just suck it up and keep it, or trek back out for a return. I really like the device.
I purchased one today. Overall I am pretty pleased with it so far. I am looking forward to the Honeycomb update. I bought a pen too but not sure how much I will actually use it.
Can someone go to abc.com and see if full episodes play smoothly. I want something that can play flash videos well and I know this is a good site to test.
Thanks
just got mine today from a contest I won and I have to say I am very surprised at how fast it boots and how well the pen responds to writing.
It has both an unlocked bootloader and access to recovery so I hope that it gets rooted soon.
I don't know if I should return the Acer Iconia Tab I just bought or keep both. One for notes when I am at school and the other for leisure/trips

Interesting, but we need to some some ballpark prices. If there's only a $50 difference between the models, I don't think most people will care.

Short answer, charging/HDMI spots are in different positions so it wouldnt fit.
yea i noticed the hdmi and micro ports switched.....which really pissed me off that moto would do that, but im suspecting they will put out a lapdock for the photon specifically.

IMO, Motorola is stepping on their own foot. Had they not switched port positions, the Atrix lap dock could have been a huge selling item for the Photon or any other Moto phone which supports it. Why keep investing MORE money for additional docks when this one alone could have raked in a lot of cash.
I'm going to test something that might just work.
We might be able to MacGyver the Atrix LapDock for use with our Photons. Using Micro USB and HDMI Extender cables.
It's not elegant, by any stretch...but would be an easy workaround.
I wouldn't be adverse to having my Photon attached to the LapDock via cables, instead of docked.
If anyone beats me to testing this out, please report your findings.
Apparently at&t has exclusive rights to the laptop dock (using with the atrix) for a period of time. Not sure how long.

Nope...haven't found THAT yet. Maybe they don't make the HDMI one?
Right now it looks like a tangled mess of adapters to make this work.
There is this adapter micro f to hdmi male:
http://www.usbsea.com/products/HDMI_Male_to_Micro_HDMI_Female_Adapter_R-AD-HMHF4.html
Then you need an hdmi f to f like this:
http://www.usbsea.com/products/HDMI_Female_to_HDMI_Female_Adapter_R-AD-HFHF.html
Then you can use your micro to regular hdmi cable.
I'm still looking for a micro hdmi f to micro hdmi m which would be perfect.

It's really frustrating that Sprint and Motorola are so far behind on the laptop dock for this phone. I really want this dock so that I can use it for work when I am on call, and not have to lug around a laptop and wait for it to boot up, connect to my hotspot etc. C'mon Sprint, C'mon Motorola! All they need to do is build two parts, a longer cable for the HDMI/USB ports, and a new baseplate for the phone to sit on, this should be nothing to kick those out, since obviously aside from the ports being swapped, it still works on this phone.

Sure, one could argue that the video he took from the helicopter was saved, edited, and then emailed to his hipster buddies, since the playback apparently isn't being streamed (@0:15). However, is there a way to stream camera feeds to a computer? Front or back camera, doesn't matter too much. WiFi versus Cabled; I can deal.
Just CAN it be done, and if not, WHY not (if you know)?
Also, how the EXPLETIVE DELETED do I tap a video on my phone and make it stream to the 80 foot projector I have setup on the outside, windowless wall of my house... or, more believably, to my 36 inch LCD television in my living room?
False advertising? Missing features due to a rooted phone? Am I just too much of a dullard to grasp an artsy concept that's portraying future possibilities instead of current technology?

Gtalk with video(gb)? Skype? Qik? or any other webcam program should do the trick. You'd have to trigger the app before taking off but I'd say it is plausable that you could make it happen.

Skype is p2p, though, correct? Never used it but I was under the assumption that it was basically like GoogleTalk/video in that the other party only sees the image. I'm more interested in being able to use the phone as a camera FOR my home computer.

Actually, streaming HD off the devices is easy. It uses a protocol known as DLNA in place of that micro-HDMI that other devices use. Same thing, just wireless.

I have used SlingMobile in my last four phones (TouchPro, TouchPro 2, DroidX, Rezound) and the app really kicks major butt in the Rezound using 4g.
I have the newest HD Slingbox and with 4g service the picture is outstanding.
I have two different inputs I can select from, standard cable and an HD cable box. If I use the standard cable input, a viewer at home can be watching a different channel than I am watching but the picture is lower quality.
I even get perfect TV reception while driving down the road in my truck. My Wife watched a movie in HD HBO on demand while we drove on a 3 hour trip last week.

I have never used anywhere near the amount of data that a lot of the posters here use every month.
Last month, I used less than 4 gigs so I would have been fine even on my Wife's 4gig tiered plan.
I don't believe data hogs are what caused tiered data anyway, I attribute it to Verizons greed.

He's using the data on his smartphone with an app he purchased. He's not running a whole home network, which are the people that are abusing the data.
As for the slingbox, I got one last xmas, it died in march, 92 days after I activated it. Contacted sling, they told me they couldn't give me any tech support without either paying 30 bucks up front or adding the extended warranty for 50 bucks. Horrible customer service in my opinion.
I can say, that when it worked, it was great, never had any problems with it. But the fact that it only worked for 3 months is what was bad. If you get it, get the warranty. Just consider it part of the purchase price.
As a side note, with mine (the base model), it took over the dvr, so if someone was watching tv at home, if I changed the channel, they would have it changed as well. Works for me because I work nights.

Something else you can try (I use it for netflix because we dont have tv) is to run an hdmi cable from your comp to your tv and you will be able to watch whatever is running on your comp.
Slingbox has had big problems with defective equipment. It is much easier and cheaper to look up their problems online and and fix it yourself or have a local electronics shop do it for you. There are online instructions to do this. I bought the parts I needed at radio shack and did it myself.

Hello everyone. I have gone as far as I can go by myself, and I am looking for a little help to see if together we can get this working.
I have a Lilliput 669GL-70NP/C/T 7" touch screen that I want to try and get working over USB host. So far, all my attempts have been fruitless, but I think that it is possible. The touchscreen utilizes an eGalax driver to work, and I see from their web site here:
http://home.eeti.com.tw/web20/eGalaxTouchDriver/linuxDriver.htm
that they have created a linux driver for ARM devices. Based on what I have been able to determine, this means that I should be able to load the driver on android, but this is where I start getting in way over my head.
Does anyone know what I should be trying to get this to work? I also read that ICS has some form of touch input built in... should I be trying this on that? Right now I am running CM7. It seems to me like with a little work we could have external touchscreens for our Atrix!
Oh I forgot to mention, when I plug the touchscreen in, DMSG does register a USB HID input device as "eGalax Inc. USB TouchController"
CM7 also registers the handlers for the touchscreen as mouse1 and event10 when I run "cat /proc/bus/input/devices"
It seems like this is so close right out of the box! I'm trying my best to load the drivers now from terminal... we'll see how that goes.
Hope you get it sorted.

Thanks, My idea here is to dump the phone to a mounted 7" screen in my car dash. I want to basically have a touch screen head unit with all the power android offers, and the unlimited data that AT&T is still reluctantly supplying.
As far as the project goes... I just tried on Joker's CM9 built with the exact same results... I was hoping maybe the rumors I had heard about ICS support were true, but not out of the box i suppose. As far as the drivers, I can not get the calibration / driver utility to run so far... and that's as far as I'm going to be able to go tonight.

lol nice timing. I was just logging in.
HDMI works great as is. However, I was looking to be able to provide input back to the phone. Otherwise, the phone still has to be front and center for controlling, which in my opinion kind of defeats the purpose of putting the screen there in the first place.
Basically you want to do like, vnc and pocket cloud, where you control your computer via smartphone but you wanna control the phone instead via touchscreen panel, that sounds like a pain in the ass!

Right now I'm trying to install ubuntu on the atrix.... with linux drivers for arm devices that might be a solution i can handle, but I'm not sure it would work with USG host. Don't know until you try though!
True that! Let me know how it goes, sounds like an excellent project

lol nice timing. I was just logging in.
HDMI works great as is. However, I was looking to be able to provide input back to the phone. Otherwise, the phone still has to be front and center for controlling, which in my opinion kind of defeats the purpose of putting the screen there in the first place.

Are you sure that the USB isn't just for passing touchscreen input back to a device? I mean, I know there are such things as USB monitors, but I don't think this is one of them, is what I'm saying -- I'm pretty sure you need to use both HDMI and USB for this to work.
Even if you could load the driver. Which you can. You still need to write some libs and script to get android on the screen. Good luck

Perhaps I need to clarify... The Lilliput 669 has a proprietary HDMI cable that breaks into HDMI and USB. I am not trying to send video and input over USB, just input. The HDMI part works as is. I plan on using both HDMI and USB in the final solution.

Yea me too! I have tried in vain to buy this. $189 AU is a little less than $200, which I would be perfectly ok with for a completely working bluetooth solution. However, I can't buy it. MP3car.com is working with the designer to bring the product to market, but they are still 4-8 weeks out, and there are some concerns that it may not be released at all. The designer's web site lists the product as out of stock.
I have tried to find somewhere else that I could buy it, or at least get schematics to build one, but it has been in vain. By the way, this has been re-branded as "Mimics for Android".
I had been wanting to do the same thing. The other day i just came across something that should be coming out end of the month android quadcore mini development board. so you could say use touch monitor and android OS i see they have bluetooth also so maybe phone could connect bluetooth to the android system in car. there isnt much more info on the board but it looks promising for an incar project its tiny. its called odroid-x http://www.hardkernel.com/renewal_2011/products/prdt_info.php
there was some other $100 range android cube thing i saw recently too that might be good. OUYA is name of it maybe XDA will have a section one day for these devices. could make for some good in-car systems much cheaper than indash receivers and more features.
Good luck to ya, keep us posted. I would kill for a solution like this. I would love to be able to implement this, with a fiber optic audio out to a DSP like the Zapco DSP6 or Audison BitOne.1 or the Helix C/P-DSP that is coming to market.

This all sounds good, and I have seen the OUYA... it looks impressive. However this will remove the phone ability if I go this route. I could just check out the android x86 project for that... I believe they already have this screen working actually. I've been trying to follow how they made that work.
I really want to stick with my atrix as the brain so that I retain the 3g connection without another $50 a month or losing unlimited internet.

just to know... do you read the "Kernel 2.6.24 upward" right?
theres also what samcriip told, even porting the drivers, you need to write the libs and scripts to get android on the screen, idk how much you know about android but... this is kinda hard to be done...
Good luck, you'll need it.
