Sure, one could argue that the video he took from the helicopter was saved, edited, and then emailed to his hipster buddies, since the playback apparently isn't being streamed (@0:15). However, is there a way to stream camera feeds to a computer? Front or back camera, doesn't matter too much. WiFi versus Cabled; I can deal.
Just CAN it be done, and if not, WHY not (if you know)?
Also, how the EXPLETIVE DELETED do I tap a video on my phone and make it stream to the 80 foot projector I have setup on the outside, windowless wall of my house... or, more believably, to my 36 inch LCD television in my living room?
False advertising? Missing features due to a rooted phone? Am I just too much of a dullard to grasp an artsy concept that's portraying future possibilities instead of current technology?

Gtalk with video(gb)? Skype? Qik? or any other webcam program should do the trick. You'd have to trigger the app before taking off but I'd say it is plausable that you could make it happen.

Skype is p2p, though, correct? Never used it but I was under the assumption that it was basically like GoogleTalk/video in that the other party only sees the image. I'm more interested in being able to use the phone as a camera FOR my home computer.
Appreciate the response. You answered my question, I just asked the wrong thing...

Actually, streaming HD off the devices is easy. It uses a protocol known as DLNA in place of that micro-HDMI that other devices use. Same thing, just wireless.

So I've done some searching and reading here lately, and I have just a few questions before I finally make this leap. I'm ecstatic that the BL is finally unlocked. This is great!
First, I do some traveling and I love being able to plug a device in to a hotel TV and get decent video quality. Is the multimedia dock the only way to allow this? Specifically, I'm looking at streaming Netflix or Hulu. I usually don't travel with DVDs on my storage card, but I suppose I can if that's the only option here.
Second, how does anyone with the LapDock like it? I personally see myself using this quite a bit, as it would make life easier at work with a larger interface and full keyboard. Do you find it too cumbersome to travel with? Ideal when you'll be in one place for longer periods of time?
How's the video chat capability? With some travel, I like to be able to call my son when on the road. Does the front cam give decent quality?
Is there any video chat capability with the lapdock? I don't see a cam on the front of it, so I'm curious if the USB ports are usable with a webcam. This would also be ideal for the quick video conferences for work.
I've been waiting and waiting for something better to come along. However, a refurbed Atrix for $50, and a refurbed lapdock for $175 is pretty tough to pass up. Both for $225...or brand new for $300 after rebate.
Thanks for any help and insight.

There´s a hdmi mirroring mod and i think it will be includen in the custom roms coming soon so you dont need a dock

AFAIK ther´s no cam in the dock but with the hdmi mirroring you can video chat on a tv, i dont know if you can plug in a webcam but with full ubuntu it should be possible
My advice: BUY IT
i dont think hdmi mirroring or webtop via hdmi is working YET in 2.3.4, but in 1.8.3 you are golden on both. with full ubuntu, there is no reason you couldnt use a webcam with the lapdock that i can think of, its essentially a computer, so as long as linux drivers are available for whichever webcam you choose to use, it should work.
Awesome! Thanks guys. Now to pull the trigger and get this thing ordered.
Just want to give my input on the lapdock. Its incredibly thin. and its a nice size. I picked up a refurbished unit from At&t for about 175.
Charges your phone too. I slapped debian on it, and it runs really nice!

Great to hear! I've been thinking about putting the full distro on there as well. I think this is a great concept and a fantastic start, even if there are some bugs/issues/features to address. I think this basic function and form will be around for a while, or at least I hope so.
On the dock, I'm assuming you've addressed the APN issue to take a grandfathered unlimited plan? That's my biggest concern: keeping unlimited data and being able to use webtop. I've read the dev forum, and it seems no one is having any issues with this, which is great.
I have unlimited. You just need to apply the tethering hack found in the dev forum, and you'll be able to keep your unlimited data!
By the way, if you're scared of receiving a bad refurbished dock, don't be. My dock looks and acts brand new

I've had pretty good luck with the refurbs before. Mine have always been brand new, but I've bought refurbs for others, and they've been flawless. I was a bit worried with the Atrix, but when I talked to my sales guy the other day he was telling me about 80% of the docks he sells are returned within 30 days. That gave me the idea to look at refurbs, and 175 isn't bad!
You'll have to get it online for the discount I believe. Free shipping too.

Yeah, that's usually how the refurbs work. I was just saying I got the idea from the salesman who said he's seen a lot returned. Now to just make sure they don't change my data plan That's always easier in the store!
I am looking to be able to access the cameras on my phones from another android phone or computer. Lets say one gets stolen (I have 3, an evo 4g, an evo 3d, and and epic 4g) I want to be able not to only track them but also access them from another device or computer and see what the people are doing on it or at least be able to access the front and rear cameras with out their knowledge and be able to snap pics from the camera. Not sure if that makes much sense it does in my head and I would really like to know how. I am sure it can be done over wifi or tethered but I won't be either of those. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I very seriously doubt u can just tune into your camera from another device without any action on the phone u want to look through. A cool idea it is but can't see it being possible.

Look up app called "android lost". It once u activate it from web site it will ask user of stolen phone to enter a passcode. Every time they do it takes a picture of them. I believe it also takes pictures every few minutes and gives u GPS, address location, and let u turn on microphone and view outgoing and incoming calls and texts. Bad ass program. And the best part of it all its free
Use the app "webkey" you can do everything you want to your phone from a computer

I think the app "gotcha" has similar features... you can also use it for surveillance if you suspect that someone is using your phone when you are not looking.
Androidlost is pretty awesome. You access its functions from a web browser, and you can have it use both the front facing and back cameras to take pictures. That being said, it would be nice if there was a dedicated app that did this. Real-time video would be an awesome addition too. It'll be like your lil'personal security camera.

Could u imagine putting this on ur kids phones or ur spouses phone. I'm sure people take advantage of it that way
As mentioned previously there are already several apps that do this. Obviously it isn't always going to be tractable, because the phone has to be on, have GPS signal (or at very least a connection to three towers) to get a small enough radius of its position. It would need either wifi or a 3G connection. Realistically for live video it will need a good, stable 4g connection (unless you are satisfied with a low resolution, low frame rate video feed). It needs to also use as little resources as possible, and be somewhat hidden so it doesn't make someone suspicious or find it to turn it off, or kill the task or service.
It is a great tool to have if your phone is stolen for sure. I'm not sure that it would be really useful though in the event that your phone is stolen, not lost. I don't know about other people but I am thinking if my phone was stolen the first thing I would do is have my account suspended. I would be worried because people can use your phone bill to buy things, and call some phone whores at 800 an hour.
I am pretty sure I read one of those apps have the ability to format your data so it isn't stolen too. The other function I might want to count on, is the ability for the app to lock the phone down. Make it impossible to unlock the device, at all, or maybe with a password. Of course the last important feature would be to have all this start even after reboot and battery pull.
I can imagine this being used maliciously by some people. Anyway, that is my two cents on the matter.
I remember seeing something with somewhat the same function. When lost, you go to the website, lock it, it shows gps location, and takes a pic using front camera if possible. Don't remember the app right now...

Update: So apparently this has been cracked by HBOTroll1, all thanks to him. You can find his thread here. Unfortunately I have dumped my photon because of Motorola's failed promises. It was a great phone but I will never again by from this company. I also do not have HBO GO anymore because of this issue but I might get it again to try this apk. I am reposting a direct link to the apk here.
This has been confirmed to work on the Photon by others. Also if you have an MHL device to try this on that would be appreciated. I am not sure if MHL is a problem to begin with though...
Disclaimer: To my extremely limited knowledge reposting this does not violate any copyright laws, which is not my intention. My belief is that this is a lack of functionality in the program which has been fixed in this apk. If such is not the case, HBO please contact me so we can discuss this error in your program.

Anywhoo... I tried plugging the photon into my tv as the PS3 does not yet have an app and HBO GO refuses to play video with the HDMI plugged into it. Does anyone know any way to stop the app or the system of realizing that the signal is being sent out?
I would be willing to put in a lot of effort into getting this hack to work but I don't even know where to start. So any advice would rock!
RANT: I know they have a reason for disabling this but for realz I can just torrent their shows so when I'm paying I'm not going to try and rip off their stuff. I mean there's a reason that I'm paying!
RANT EXTENDED: I hate all of this DRM like bullsh!t that makes it more difficult to be a paying customer then a priate. I mean you can just go to isohunt or thepiratebay and search for game of thrones 720p. Then download the playstation media server and install the extra codecs and whatnot they recomend. This will let your computer transcode the video files so that the ps3 can output the video over your network. Wifi N can handle the video great and plug in a hundred foot Ethernet cable for $13 and get beautiful streaming with 5.1 surround sound.

Unfortunately I don't think there is any kind of workaround for this. I remember having the same issue. Think I tried running HBO from browser in Webtop mode but can't remember if it just didn't work or if it worked and the video was bad quality.
Probably better off downloading vid from the net and installing to view locally.
what we need is to get our hands on the earlier version of the app
I've heard people report it USED to work using a combination of the first release of the app and something called Xternal Display (which just mirrors the image on the screen.)
I know sprint t.v doesn't work either on HDMI out using stock mopho .

I can't believe you're brave enough to use isohunt and piratebay. Those are the two most well known trackers that get people busted.

I'm guessing that it check the version number and would want you to update. Though if anyone has an older apk I would love to try this out!
I have version 1.3.1, I just installed version 1.7.1 and installed this version and it still plays fine, haven't tried hdmi out using version 1.3.1 yet. But I'll upload it tomorrow, I'm away from my computer right now
I got it working perfectly
I used splashtop on my Macbook which also works on PC to get it working everytime without fail. I have a video on youtube that shows me doing it but I am a newb so I can't post link. lol
sorry everybody, i thought the thread was dead but here is the hbogo 1.3.1 apk, just fyi it gives out the original error message saying that there is something wrong, not the new one stating the program doesn't allow hdmi out.

basically my mother has developed a extremely terrible seizure disorder and needs eyes and ears on her even when she is just setting in the living room watching television. My father is there to be those eyes and ears but since that consumes most of his time he no longer gets to go to his upstairs workroom and build his radio controlled quadcopters which seems to be the only hobby he still has or enjoys so to speak. I'm looking to get some suggestions on a good app to view the camera of one android phone from another android phone so that either while he is up in the room he has the ability to see and hear her aeither at the touch of a button or widget. I'm searching for something somewhat parent friendly to set up (not to complicated) as all I can do is call and give him the name of it. if anyone has any suggestions on something that might fit the description of this situation please leave a reply with your opinion. thanks for anyone's time, Robert

Connect two android phones and/or Windows XP/Vista/7 devices to a mobile baby phone (baby monitor / baby alarm). One device is the sender and placed near the baby. The other device is the receiver taken along. The two devices connect with one another over the internet resulting in a virtually unrestricted transmission range as long as an internet connection is available.

I very much appreciate your reply as I feel this all I can do to help my parents out in there current situation. I am really hoping that the app works without a wifi network because they also do not have Internet from there ISP, they only have basic cable. I very much thank you for your reply and I'll definitely call my dad and tell him to try that app out. Thank you once again.
I told my father about the app and he attempted to set it up but said it wouldn't work without the licence, atleast on one of his phones. does anyone know of a similar app that might be easy to set up and doesn't require wifi home network? it can be paid or free, he just can't do in app purchases on his setup, but he can buy them outright if they happen to be paid and not free. thanks

To anyone reading this it's probably old news, but this is my first Sony device ever, and I didn't do my homework. Knowing that unlocking the bootloader erases the entire phone it's usually the first thing I do when I get a new phone. Having said that I obviously lost my DRM when I didn't back up my TA Partition. Everything I find by searching has to do with either avoiding loss in the first place or it's an older post regarding the Z. Does anyone know exactly what I've lost. My understanding from old posts is this:
-you lose over the air updates
-you lose use of Sony digital services that require DRM
-you lose x-reality display functionality
Do these still hold true with the Z2 and KitKat?
Thanks
Well, you're the one to tell! Since you're among the first few to get this device.
I think Z1 had camera issues after unlocking the boot loader, do you have those? Is camera taking pictures as good as before?

I ran the camera through its paces. Very quick and very nice results. Also, I tested the video and 4K recording, all seems fine. I am able to toggle the X-reality mobile engine on and off but can't tell if it does anything. I'm not familiar with its purpose but generally opt out of visual software enhancements anyway so maybe I'll luck out.
I'm pissed at myself... I don't use Sony services really so renting movies and such should pose an issue. I was able to connect to my PS4 remotely and download a game so that doesn't seem effected.
What else can I check?
If you can or care you might wish to see if video output at HD is still possible, I know you can't try 4k yet till the cable becomes available.

MHL adapter is the only physical output I'm aware of.....I don't have one of those. I can use HD chromecast no problem but that's 3rd party content, not Z2 created video. I'm trying to come up with another way to test it and drawing a blank.
As I said that connector is not available yet but I wasn't sure if you could output HD video via another means as my phone is on backorder like most folks. I'm thinking you wont be able to because that's situation normal but you would be the first person I've read of that could confirm it.
I understand what you are saying. MHL 3.0 cable isn't available. You said the phone should not be able to output HD, which I took to mean 1080. That test would be possible using MHL 1.0 or 2.0, and that's what I was referring to when I said I don't have one. I'd buy one for the purpose of testing this out unless there is some other way I can accomplish this testing. I don't know of any other way and it seems like you don't either.....am I understanding all this correctly. I should buy an MHL 2.0 and see if I can output some 1080 video?

Yeah I did mean 1080P, it should not be possible after the loss of the keys and it's the only HD or higher resolution you can output without the mhl3 connector. I myself would just wait for the phone to release globally and soon enough I'd get my answer rather than buying. But if ya gots to know...
