[Q] Vibrant to PC USB Connection Issue - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Community-
I'm having USB connection issues & was hoping for a little guidance.
Although I've read through multiple USB problem threads, I thought I'd start my own rather than hijack another member's thread.
In an effort to best help, I'll try to be thorough.
When I connect my Vibrant to PC, I get the "USB Device Not Recognized" and "Error Code 43" notifications & "Unknown Device" designation in Device Manager. Also, when I set updates to automatic, I get an "Drivers failed to install" notification (paraphrased).
I am running EDT's Project V with one of the Bullet 1.2/1.42 kernels. While I DO NOT believe the ROM or Kernel are causing issue, I will likely change both soon to confirm.
To solve the issue, I have attempted the following in USB Debugging and Mass Storage modes:
1. Plugged into 3 different PCs (2 running XP, 1 running W7).
a. Multiple usb ports in each.
2. Used 4 different micro USB cables (two are original Samsung cables).
3. Allowed windows to autdetect & install drivers (fails).
4. Installed 32 bit drivers & 64 bit drivers from multiple sources using the included setup files (uninstalled between).
5. Manually directed Windows to 32 bit and 64 bit drivers using Device Manager.
6. Attempted to connect to Kies Mini in Kies mode (uninstalled program after failure).
*As a side note, I successfully connected a Captivate & Fascinate (neither mine) to one of the PCs using one of the same Samsung cables I have tried.
*And another: I have not tried to connect the Vibrant recently, but have successfully connected the phone to multiple PCs in the past.
To this point, I have not tried:
1. Manually installing I9000 drivers.
2. Installing a new Froyo kernel and/or ROM.
3. Reverting to a previous Froyo nandroid that connected in the past.
4. Flashing an Eclair kernel then reverting to a stock Eclair nandroid.
Those will likely be the next steps, but if any users have had success using additional methods, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Try this from Unlockr.com (was for HTC drivers but you can clear remaining Samsung drivers if any)
1. Download USBDeview
http://download.cnet.com/USBDeview/3000-2094_4-10614190.html
2. While the phone is still plugged in, open USBDeview and sort by manufacturer. Find all the Samsung drivers and delete them all.
3. Once all have been deleted, unplug the phone from the USB cable and plug it back in.
4. The correct drivers should reinstall automatically (check the drivers as they are installing, one should say ADB Device driver).

Downloaded USBDeview from the provided link. Program confirmed that I have already deleted all Samsung drivers.
When I left program running and plugged Vibrant back in, I got:
1. Same error notification (device has malfunctioned).
2. Windows did not try to download drivers (despite permission in Windows Update).
3. USBDeview did not recognize that a USB device had been plugged in (checked "Display devices without drivers" under Options & refreshed).
Thanks for the reply & a new method to attempt though! Something's gotta work eventually.

"device has malfunctioned"
"Drivers failed to install" notification"
edit: just letting you know my experiences with those failure notices. for me it had nothing to do with drivers and such. it was faulty hardware.
Ive had this problem with one of my MS Bluetrak mouses. The USB dongle fried and burned and messed up one of my usb2.0 ports on my laptop, leaving me with only one. Might be your usb port in your phone that's malfunctioned. My two vibrants have loose connections now because of the way it pulled left or right while charging. so it's either your usb port on pc or the phone has a bent chip or massive dust...idk
sorry i cant help. another alternative is to replace your usb part on your phone.

Yeah, looking that way, huh?
Anyway, thanks again.

I had a similar situation. I had 4 micro usb cables, two samsung stock ones (captivate/vibrant), 1 blackberry, 1 which I forgot where I got it from. Long story short, the blackberry one which coincidentally was the thickest cable of the bunch was the only one that consistently detected my phone. Hope that helps...

Haha, tried my thickest cable for 15 min again just to see.
Unfortunately, I'm getting close to giving up.
So:
1. No smartphone for a while ... Boo!
2. Or no Odin ever ... Double boo!!

THANK YOU!!!! I tried using my wife's cable and it did the trick! It sucks because I saw your comment a few days ago but it didn't register but this morning I am sleepless so decided to give it a shot again and voila!!! Thank you boss.

I have been working through this for a while as well. As far as I can tell, the problem is isolated to only my machine, even though there are a couple of different USB controllers within. Both cables I have and the CM7.1-nightly (various attempted) Vibrant I am using will connect to my laptop and my other desktop, but not to my Asus P8Z68-V Pro (either directly or through a hub, through the USB3 controller and USB3 + hub). I have also tried a separate stock Vibrant, same results. All I get on my uber-rig is charging
one thing that HAS worked (in a limited fashion) is using the hub built in to my Razer Tarantula keyboard, however its USB 1.1 and cant supply the proper voltage. So code 43 becomes code 10 (This Device Cannot Start [USB Hub Power Exceeded]), still no functionality.
fortunately my mobo has a built in bluetooth module and I can just push things around with that. slowly... Will be keeping an eye out for bios and chipset updates to see if they resolve, and in the future may try an add-in USB2 card

[Q] USB Device Not Recognized

So I was hoping some of you guys could help me out.
Recently my Vibrant started to give me trouble with my computer. But it's only my vibrant with my computer. I can connect to any other computer no problem. Any other device is easily recognized by my computer except the vibrant.
It started after using PDANET's tethering app. I was at one point tethering all the time putting my phone in usb debugging mode and running pdanet on my computer. Then I also started using the bluetooth tethering. Once I finally got internet at my new place i stopped using the tethering option. But then I realized when i tried to get files off my phone my computer wouldnt recognized my phone anymore.
The error I get is
USB Device Not Recognized.
One of the usb devices on this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognized it.
Usb Root Hub Unknown device.
Try Reconnecting the device if windows still does not recognized it replace the device.
In the device manager the properties of the "unknown device" says
Status: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
I've tried the solution posted under here
USB Fix - Win7 x64 - USB Device not Recognized
and I've used both drivers from Samsung Kies and here
[Drivers] MS Windows x86 and x64 USB Drivers for Samsung Galaxy S
(Sorry can't post links apparently)
When I try to update the driver manually for the unknown device it says that it has already selected the best driver for the device. So i don't know if it really updated it.
Any Suggestions would be really helpful. Thanks!

I have the same problem on my PC. I would plug in the phone and my mouse would stop working. No tethering app installed or anything.
Anyway, I just tried the ports on the back of the PC and those worked. Try a port closer to the MB
I've tried all my ports. It's still not recognized.
Check the cable and power source. Be sure cable is with good quality. I hade the same issue. I fixed it with original HTC cable and back panel USB from my deskop computer. Front USB of desktop computers often are not enough to power that consumption.
After updating to Froyo it started working again. Thanks though. I still have no clue what caused it.
Bumping to confirm, I found this thread after getting the same error. I had tried several of the USB ports on my computer but after reading this tried the 2 I hadn't yet, they both worked. Not sure why only those work now, but they do work.
Hope this helps someone.
I have a bricked galaxy s which doesn't do anything. Windows 7 reconizes an unknown device and it's not possible to install the samsung driver. Windows says that it allready has the right driver.
I can't seems to reincarnate my galaxy s. Only this small sign of live in windows 7.
It happened when I was flashing 2.3.5 and the connection went down just seconds after the start of flashing so I guess the bootloaders are corrupt.
Anyone any idea how to solve this one?
Vibrant UnBrickable Mod
The same thing is happening to my Vibrant. Tried Rooting and installing various ROMs and it is still "Not Recognized". Tried all ports on all PCs (4) and Laptops (1) and non of them work. espy1988, how did you upgrade to Froyo 2.2 if you could not connect to PC and Kies? This used to work without an issue.
Thanks

Like said above u might need to be debricked.
seems like ur phone is hard bricked.

have u tried Odin back to stock using Odin or hemidal ?
I have the same problem now. I have had my Vibrant for over a year never with an issue. I have Odined it back to JFD dozens of times but now it will not recognize the usb device.
I have GB bootloaders, but never a problem before. When changing Roms I usually Odin back to JFD first and start clean.
My problem started with the phone getting stuck in landscape mode. I was running a 2.3.4 GB rom Sensation. I reflashed a few times but whenever a restored anything from Titanium it would revert back to landscape only. I decided to go back to a 2.2 rom and plugged in the phone to Odin and it was not recognized, also not as a mass storage device, no go. I used Samba to copy a 2.2 rom, Trigger, to the phone and flashed from there. The phone is good now except the computer still won't recognize it. I can use Samba to access the SDCard but I hate not being able to use Odin if things go south. Tried all usb ports and a new cable, no go. Really wierd.
Looking for suggestions......
If you're still under warranty claim it & send it.
Had same problem. There is no fix short of replacing USB port.
I found my problem. It was dirty/corroded usb port. I carefully cleaned it out (took a few times) and it's all functioning again. I also cleaned the contacts on my original usb cord and it is working again also.
I'm just now having this problem for the first time. I've tried all USB ports and cleaning the port on the phone with no luck so far. Can someone point me to the unbrickable mod mentioned early in this thread?

Have you tried installing the installing/re-installing the Samsung drivers (LINK), using another USB cable, or even another computer? I just want to make sure you've tried it all before attempting to do a hardware mod.
Anyhow, you can find a link to the unbrickable mod and other hardware mods in the "Official XDA Vibrant Bible Thread", under the "MODS/SCRIPTS" section (LINK).
Mine is the cable btw. My wife has a GSII and I was able to use her cable.

Need help pleae

Ok boys and girls, my pc had a short in the power supply. Now I get the, the usb device has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it message. Tried on 3 different computers. And yes I do have the correct drivers installed. I wish it was that simple. I didn't know if there is a trick. the phone still charges from the computer,in fact I can still open the phones drives on the pc. The one thing I can't do is Odin. After calling support and having them send me the drivers based on my serial number, im certain I have the correct drivers. At this point I've been on Miui and Ics passion for 2 months. I can only flash back and forth nothing else will take. I will be grateful for any input, thank you
I even tried mobile Odin, it just says device not supported I assume it has something to do with it being 2.3.7 unsure.
I do not see how a short in the PSU would cause your problem. Maybe a bad USB port on your PC (eg. USB positive & negative backwards will kill a USB device plugged into it), but if the phone is charging while plugged into the PC USB and Odin isn't recognizing it, then try uninstalling Odin as well as the drivers and starting from a clean slate.

If the phone SD card can be mounted, it sounds like the hardware is ok. You could always try an sdb connection, or Heimdall from a Linux box.

[Q] [Solved?] No PC Detection on AOKP ROMs

Ok so I was previously running Hydr0g3n ICS ROM an older version and I had mount problems where only internal sd would mount, but it mounted at least. Occasionally I'd have to reboot my laptop because of no detection but that'd fix it.
Fast forward to a couple of days ago and I installed Resurrection Remix 04/05 but got really weird issues when connecting to my laptop e.g. installing device drivers, failing, usb sounds coming and going, device being recognised then disappearing again. Eventually no response. I reflashed, fully wiped, everything, experimented with drivers. Then plugged it into a mates (newer) laptop and it worked?
Back to mine, didn't work, installed Hydr0g3n ICS 05/05 which ran a lot smoother but still same issues, I repeated the steps above and even after device drivers actually successfully installed, it'd work and then next day no response or detection when plugging in USB. Since then I've gone through the drivers route again, trying all sorts of windows fixes, it still works fine when plugged into a newer laptop.
So after all my research etc I've realised that it seems to be some sort of power issue with the phone/ROM, perhaps the newer laptops have more USB hubs which aren't shared between many devices and so it works but mine is very intermittent if not non-existent. Oh, all other USB devices work, flash drives, external hard drives, I have never had any issues with any USB devices. Just this.
Also, I've tried toggling USB Debugging, and MTP UMS PTP, nothing. Read something about fast charge but have no notification that it's enabled on boot and no option to disable it in Kernel tweaks since I'm not on a supported kernel.
Hydr0g3n ICS ROM 2012 05 05 SGS2
3.0.29 Siyah v3.1.2
Any help would be much appreciated.
UPDATE:
I ordered a powered USB hub off eBay, it arrived today and did not work with the phone.
UPDATE 2:
So I recently stole my dads TouchPad and installed AOKP on it, my laptop detected it absolutely fine in MTP mode.
It uses the same cable so I figured, why not?
I plugged it in and hey presto, it popped up -_-
It's so strange the stock cable works on everyone elses laptops but mine, I don't know if it'll still work tomorrow though, I suppose if I don't re-comment then it still is working.
Bump?

just try 2 flash the latest siyah kernel and check
On Windows 7, after several USB connect-disconnect, I would experience Windows not responding to connection any more on that very USB port.
I usually have adb server running in background, so "Safely remove" feature is blocked, and I would simply remove after file operations are over.
I made a .bat file on desktop, that simply performs "adb kill-server", so that I can safely remove it, and have not experienced this problem since then.

I've tried all of the kernels, Siyah, Thoravukk, NEAK, and multiple versions of Siyah too, including the latest one.
Also my powered USB hub arrived today and it did not remedy the issue.

Could you perhaps explain this a little more to me?
I plug it in and literally it charges but absolutely nothing else happens. Anything else works in the same port, just not the phone for some reason.
USB problems basics .
USB port should be mainboard port .
Usb Port on phone multiple USB problem posts say clean port .
Kies or Samsung USB drivers should be installed with Kies not running .
USB cable try Samsung cable or another .
Try USB debugging off and or on .

1) Yes they are all mainboard ports - No response.
2) Have cleaned USB ports on mainboard many times. This seems irrelevant too since all other devices are recognized.
3) Have also experimented with combinations of this. (All combinations) Nothing.
4) I have only tried the Samsung cable since it's all I have, and it works on all of my friends laptops.
Also, I plug it in, and it draws power (aka it charges) but nothing else. Not even a windows 'bong'. Even with the powered USB hub, it still only charges.
However the minute I plug it into a friends laptop it seems to work just fine.

goto device manager and uninstall the android devices you see there with the option "delete device drivers completely" and make a reboot.
now install the usb drivers and plug in the device.

This last point tells me there are possibly some registry settings on your computer that are keeping the drivers from loading properly.
I've never had to do this, so I don't know what to look for EXACTLY, but you may need to get a registry cleaner and try to eradicate all traces of Kies and Samsung drivers from your computer, then re-install either Kies (to get the drivers) or the stand-alone USB drivers.
I remember reading another post some time back about some other guy who actually totally re-installed Windows... which is a bit like using explosives to kill a mosquito, if you ask me.
However, try bala_gamer's suggestion first. That may be all that is needed.

NO its the phone USB port .
Agree that if all fails try reinstall of Kies and drivers after a delete .

So believe it or not I didn't actually go into detail in the op! But a few more things to note are that the device does not show up in device manager at all. Even with shadow device detection enabled. I have used all manner of driver software available to clear out all old usb drivers/any drivers which may be conflicting etc. I have also removed and reinstalled the usb host controllers and root hubs many times

Yes, indeed I also believed it to be some sort of registry problem, I have also used tune up utlities, registry mechanic and ccleaner (I think thats all there was!) and run registry scans/cleans/fixes/defrags. To no avail. I was actually considering reinstalling windows or something.

New S2 can not connect to PC

I just received a replacement S2 from AT&T, my old S2's USB port went out. I am wanting to root through Odin and get CM9 back on but I can not get my phone to connect to my PC. I have tried on my main PC Windows 7 64 bit and my laptop Windows XP. The phone is running 2.3.6 KK6. When I connect it I see MTP Initialization followed by MTP Connected on my phone, but nothing on my computer. When connecting in Mass storage mode by either enabling usb debugging or through settings -> wirelss -> USB Utilities the phone will just beep when connecting. I've tried the following to fix:
- Installed Kies, Reinstalled Kies
- Installed just the Samsung USB driver
- *#7284# on my phone and made sure PDA was selected under USB. Even switched to Modem then back to PDA.
- Tried removing my MicroSD card
- Multiple reboots
- Tried 2 different cables
- Tried different USB ports
Any other ideas on how to fix?

First thing I would try is to completely uninstall the usb drivers in Windows, and then reinstall the usb drivers from this thread.
Well...I fixed my issue and want to headbutt a kitten as well. Turned out that I wasn't using a MicroUSB cable that was able to do Data as well as charge. Guess all MicroUSB cables are not created equally. I had 3 that I tried and they would just charge the device. I talked to Samsung and they asked if I was using my "Official" Samsung cable. I thought I was, turns out I wasn't. I went to Walmart and got a cable certified for Data and all is good in the world. Connected to my PC instantly.
So if you are having issues, check to make sure you are using your Samsung cable or one that is certified for data.

[Q] Windows 7 "SAMSUNG Mobile MTP Device" failed installation

Hi
For some reason I am now getting a Driver Installation Failure error for my S3 when I plug it in to USB on Windows 7. The driver is SAMSUNG Mobile MTP Device, which fails after a long (3 minute or so) install attempt.
This means I can't access the Phone via USB for file tranfers etc, either Windows Explorer or Keis. Though I can use ODIN to Flash if I put the Phone in Debug Mode.
I have tried all sorts. Un-installing the Samsung Drivers, rebooting and reinstalling, and getting Kies to try a driver repair.
It wasn't like this when I started with the phone. Something changed - after I rooted it. I am currently on the Omega ROM 6.0 with standard kernel. For a while I was on 5.1 with Syloa 1.1 and then 1.26. I realized it was wrong when I couldn't copy Omega 6.0 ROM ZIP over to Flash.
I have searched and searched. This seems to have happened to other phones as well but be intermittent. A few other phone on XDA have reported this in the last couple of weeks (so maybe a Microsoft change to Windows 7?)
As a weird related issue sometimes when I plug the Phone into WIndows now I get two removable drives showing, which are "Samsung USB Gadgets" using a 2006 Microsoft Driver... They show as removable drives with no drive in them. Again all my tricks of disabling uninstalling, re-installing etc these seem to make no difference.
Anyway - any ideas / fixes help appreciated!!!
Cheers
So here is the cure. First connect your phone to your pc. Now right click my computer and select manage. Go to device manager and expand the universal serial bus controllers tab. Now you should see something like unknown device with a yellow exclamation mark. Right click it and select uninstall. Now reconnect your phone and try it.
Now again check in device manager after installation. It should look like the one in the attachment.
I've got the same issue; can't get the MTP drivers to work on my Win 7 machine or my work XP box. Both had the Galaxy nexus drivers on them previously (I think, came from ICS Captivate).
Are you sure USB debbuging is unchecked in settings?
If that's not the problem, you could try a different pc or os (a live ubunt cd for instance) to see whether it's the phone or the computer thats messed up.
Fresh windows 7 install and still nothing. Could the phone be messed up?
Have you tried a different USB port?
Yeah tried all the ports/cables I've got lying around. In safe mode it will install everything okay but Kies still won't connect. :/

It wasn't like this when I started with the phone. Something changed - after I rooted it. I am currently on the Omega ROM 6.0 with standard kernel.

Same here!
I also have Omega ROM 6.0 but the problem started BEFORE Omega ROM.
Did you also back up your efs folder using SGS Toolkit 2.0?
I seem to have had the problem after flashing the "insecure image" which one has to do using the SGS Toolkit in order to backup efs.
Ive also uninstalled and reinstalled pretty much EVERYTHING, drivers, Kies, SGSToolkit etc...
I have 5 pc's at home. ALL of them cannot connect to my SGS3, and ALL could connect to my SGS2 a couple of days ago!
tx
Mark.

So here is the cure. First connect your phone to your pc. Now right click my computer and select manage. Go to device manager and expand the universal serial bus controllers tab. Now you should see something like unknown device with a yellow exclamation mark. Right click it and select uninstall. Now reconnect your phone and try it.

Thanks, but process does not work in this case. Not on 5 PC's in my house.
BTW Kies by WIFI seems to work, but it is obviously very limited...

Hi there
This may work in other situations, but I have found out what caused my MTP to start working again, and it is NOT the computer, it is the phone for 100% sure.
I had this issue on 5 PCs in my home, ALL of which worked fine with my SGS2.
I did a factory wipe, wiped dalvik, and re-installed Omega v6 rom, and it now works on all 5 computers.
I do not know why it started, but the thing I did before the problems started was to use SGSToolkit v2 to flash an "insecure image" so I could backup efs folder. I have a feeling it is related to this, but I do not know for sure, and the maker of that software says 20000 people have used his software without this issue, so it cannot be his software.
Anyhow, by reflashing omega, and wiping the phone, it now works.
Mark.
Worked for me too.. It was the phone.
Mark,
Thanks. I too had Omega 5.2.
I wanted to upgrade modems but found I couldn't connect via PC as I had lost Root.
I too downloaded Version 2.0 of the tool kit and downloaded the insecure kernel and flashed it.
After that I could not get any PC to recognise the phone.
I got Omega 6.0 on wirelessly
But connection problem remained.
So your full wipe worked. The phone is now behaving and connecting to any PC I try.
Thanks
Geoff
Possibly the USB cable?
I ran into this issue as well. When I connected my phone to my (Win7Prof64) computer, the OS recognized and downloaded the drivers and my phone's directory came right up. When I tried the same the next day - I received the "unknown device" message. After about an hour of troubleshooting I learned something interesting - I was using a different USB cable than the one I received with my phone. I connected the USB cable I got with the phone and everything automagically worked again. The USB cable must use another wire that "regular" USB cables don't? Here's a chat with Samsung support regarding the cable:
Gavin: Yes, the USB cable supplied with the device is Samsung recommend and is the Original. So, we request you to use the USB which is supplied with the device.
Doug: will i damage the device at all if i use a different cable to simply charge the device?
Gavin: No, it will not damage the device while charging.
Gavin: But, it can face some issues in connecting in mass storage mode.
Hope this helps!
Here's what I found about about my problem.
Samsung Galaxy S3 does not like USB 3.0 ports on my laptop.
Plugged the phone into the USB 2.0 port and it worked perfect.
Hope this helps out some of you!
The same device on Win7 OK, on XP not.
4 me it happen after Android upgrade to ICS 4.0.4 but only on XP PC. Win7 found new drivers online automatically.
May be XP is to old 4 ICS
One solution I found here: http://androidforums.com/4819200-post7.html however don't want to hard reset my device
Some body can try driver pack 4 all phones here: http://www.mobiledit.com/downloads.htm?show=14
I had this happen on occasion in the past and just now (moved to new laptop). What I have done that works for me is that you open up the details (where it says that it's installing your device click here for more details) and let it find/install all the drivers. Eventually it will fail with the MTP driver, KEEP that window open. Now unplug the usb cable FROM YOUR PC (don't ask me why but this works 100% from the phone side not always) and then plug in again. You'll see the MTP driver search start again and this time it should install.
FIX
1. Download and install the s3 Toolkit here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
2. Don't run it but browse to \Samsung Galaxy S3 ToolKit\drivers
3. Run USBDeview and uninstall everything with Samsung or i9300 in the description (right-mouse)
4. uninstall Kies and USB drivers.
5. Disconnect phone
6. Install \Samsung Galaxy S3 ToolKit\drivers\Samsung_USB_Driver.exe
7. Connect phone.
Tadah!
Solution
Here is the only solution that could resolve the problem for me after days and days of trials and errors.
Just go to device manager and manually install the driver after selecting it from the already available drivers.
over and done.
