Hows the LCD contrast vs. the original? - HTC EVO 3D

Just wondering if the contrast has improved...thanks. (I am already aware that the resolution increased)

I am also wondering if the new screen is any easier to see in daylight...

In my honest opinion, contrast is worse than my Evo4G (Epson) and the screen is slightly harder to see in the sunlight.

For me I can see it a little better in the sunlight. My big thing is even in a low lit room I seem to get a reflection that distracts my eyes when looking at 3d pics and stuff, but just normal use during the day outside is better for me.

Same here..Evo3D seems a lot easier for me to see in the sunlight...As for the screen its self,it has a warm temperature to it.Whites are not as bright as they use to be on the OG Evo...but its really easier on the eyes this way.
Sent from that EVO3D Thingy...I need an asprin.

I love the screen on the 3d versus the og .... Always felt the og had a washed out look the 3d doesnt give me that same feeling.

both are equally bad under sunlight. Hardly can see it.

i am also wondering what screen has better color and brighter i have always been jealous because samsung phone produce better screens but hopefully this screen on the evo 3d looks better then the og if not i will not be getting this that would be a embarrassment

Having both phone in my hand right now i can honestly say that evo 4g looks better. The evo 3d has a yellowish tint to it. White looks yellowish while og evo look pure white. I know.this can be fix after rooted but i kind of hate this yellowish tint (warm color). It wont be noticable to you until you hold both phones next to each other.

Could anyone post some photo's of a side by side comparison between the Evo 3D and the old Evo (or Desire HD)?
The screen of my Desire HD is fine for me, although it can be a pain to see it in bright sunlight even at 100% brightness. I'm very interested to see some pics of the Evo 3D's screen in bright sunlight at 100%, 50% and 0% compared to some of the older HTC phones.

For what its worth, the Nexus S screen is also very hard to see in sunlight. Also the Samsung colors are way over saturated - not accurate at all.
OTOH the Blackberry Bold is very easy to see in direct sun.
*also wondering, is the active part of the screen more narrow on the 3d, or is the bezel just smaller? Thanks y'all.

Wow, this doesn't look good. The two main reasons I was considering this phone was for higher contrast and better look in daylight! I can't see using an upgrade just for a speedier processor.

My phone performs great in Sun light.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App

I have no problem reading the 3d in sunlight but I also didn't have a problem with the OG EVO. It is not the sharpest under the sun but I have no problems with either one.
Having said that I was expecting to see a much more improved screen over my EVO but that was not the case. I had sold my EVO a week before I got the 3d so I can't compare side by side but I don't think I can tell the difference between SLCD and LCD. This might also be that none of the graphics look they they were converted to qhd as they do not look high def at all......
Either way, the OG EVO was a great device but I do believe the EVO 3d is a total all around upgrade and worth it's value.

To each his/her own, but I believe the 3vo has a way better screen. All the reviews say the s-lcd is gorgeous as well.
Holding it next to my novatec evo 4g, there is no comparison. Resolution makes a huge difference, but colors are way better as well. It is a matter of opinion if you prefer a cool white (purple tint) or a warm white (more accurate, I don't see the yellow tint). Beyond that all the other colors are great. For example the angry birds icon look much better on the 3vo than the evo. I held the 3vo side by side to the samsung infuse (the 4g, At&T super + scree), and I can honestly say I prefer the 3vo. The evo is brighter, and the colors are vivid and accurate. Yes, the blacks on the infuse are deep, but all the other colors are cartoonish. It was even more evident when I compared two picture of myself on both phones. On the 3vo, I looked normal, and on the infuse I had orange skin.
Compared to the nexus s, the 3vo wins again. The whites look horrible on the nexus s. Very dirty looking.
Then again, just my opinion. I also have fine performance in bright sun light.

The Evo3D has alot more to offer than just a speedier processor... but I am sure you know that. Given that you've compared the spec sheet with the OG Evo... is a higher contrast screen all that constitues using an upgrade for you?

Yes, the screen has a lot to do with it. Believe it or not, the OG is fast enough for me! ;-) What I am looking for is better screen, smaller size, better battery life, and not much else honestly. The OG is a great phone IMO. It has simply worked the way it should from the get-go. Cheers to HTC for putting out such a good phone.

Also, no one answered this question earlier...
I am wondering, is the active part of the 3D screen more narrow and longer, or is the bezel simply smaller?

the screen is more narrow and longer which I wasn't crazy about BUt it's actually rapidly growing on me. I feel that the screen is easier to see in sunlight and I didin't realize how bad the purple tint on the 4G screen was till I put the 3D next to it. for me the screen was readable even with polarized sunglasses on (the evo would be practically invisible with them on)

Good to know, thanks.

Ego booster :D

So I was just browsing videos of the gs2 and I found that the screen is only pushing 16 bit colors. They tried to make the best screen in the mobile industry and it just fails when it comes to any type of gradient. The Evo3d and sensation push 32 bit colors which makes a HUGE difference. This (for me) settles any unsureness I had about evo3d vs gs2.
Good research!

The people who just love the amoled screens don't realize that they are not color accurate..they are vibrant and colorful but I know a lot of galaxy s owners who were not very satisfied when they printed pictures they thought looked terrific on their phones..oversaturated that's all.I'm going for the qhd but I guess to each theory own
I think it really does come down to preference. I own a vibrant as well as a inspire "4g" (which is my daily driver). I think images (ane video) are much more impressive on the super amoled screen. The potential battery savings are nice as well. All that said, I prefer to use my inspire; larger screen and more horsepower (under certain conditions)

its not like the colors aren't accurate... they may be a bit over saturated but thats all.
as far as 16 bit vs 32 bit you can't tell the difference .
we were debating this in the nook forum as 32 bit was causing problems.
switched to 16 bit and it looks the same.
the big difference (to me) is in viewing angles. laying in bed or on the couch its not always easy to have the phone directly in front of you. hopefully the evo looks acceptable using it this way.

Over saturation --> inaccuracy. Reds may still be red but they don't accurately represent the red in the image.

doesn't mean its any less accurate then the evo if the colors are washed out because you have it slightly tilted to one side.

I beg to differ about 32 vs 16. any gradient will have a ton of color banding on 16, 32 has close to none. I say close because you can look really closely on any screen and see where the pixels have changed. I'll post a video I found where you see the difference, its huge
I do hope that the evos viewing angles are better than the sensations.. i was pretty bummed about that
Edit: heres the video, watch the quadrant bench at 4:15 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3axSZX1R_s
yeah i didn't see a huge difference other then how washed out the sensation looked
don't get me wrong i'm getting the evo but i really hope the viewing angles are better then what i've been seeing.

Screen quality

i have the photon , but i really dont like the screen quality (sharpness and color wise)compared to my old epic. not trying to troll here, just to ask if anyone think it can be fixed with a software update or is it a hardware issue?
The general consensus is that's just how the phone is. However some lucky people don't seem to notice screens quality (or lack thereof).
Welcome to the PenTile display.
Just the way it is. For best results, try to hold the phone far away.
I think it's actually a pretty cool technology.

Coming from the Epic, who's Super AMOLED screen also uses a pentile subpixel arrangement also mind you, you shouldn't really be noticing a sharpness difference between them. But yes, any and literally all LCDs do look duller and more muted than the Super AMOLED. It's just a nature of the technology.

Well, I can say that, due to it's white subpixels, it is a brighter display that is much more viewable in sunlight. It is also much better on toast.
Wilty
I watch videos all the time on my phone and I don't like it. It is too grainy, the color is off, too much sharpness, black is too dark and any hint of light in the scene and its too bright. HD quality videos look pretty good but lower resolution videos just look bad.
I see the problem in dark scenes where there is very little light you can't differentiate any objects in the dark area. Its all a blur. In the same scene the face has little light on it but it will be over satuated. Its like someone is shining a flashlight in his face. If any of you watch Showtime's Dexter you will see what I mean as the show has a lot of scenes in dark warehouses.
Yes I think they can make it better with software. They can turn down the sharpness. They can allow a little light to be on during dark scene rather then let it be all black (total absence of light). They can try different color temperature because right now all the human skin looks too red to me. They can dial down the intensity of white on lighted scenes.
Just got home with my Photon, which I bought primarily because it's a world phone and specs looked pretty good. Gotta agree with OP, the display is piss poor. Just might return it for something else. Kinda mad I turned in my EVO. Overall I played $99. We'll see...sigh.

One thing that is kind of cool, is that the CEO actually replied to (and blogged about) an AndroidForums thread discussing the P4G screen. Spend some time reading that thread for even greater detail about the merits of the Pentile screen.
Granted, it's the CEO of Pentile, so obviously they have a bit of a bias... but she also offers fascinating technical insight behind the technology as well.
I'm very happy with the screen myself, very easy to read in sunlight especially but very bright in general (which i like). The colors were "different" compared to the evo and evo 3d I had prior but after a few hours, I started noticing more color and details in apps that I hadn't ever seen before. I feel it looks much better overall vs the evo and evo 3d. Yes, I do see the checkerboard when the display is off if I look at the right angle but I dont notice it when the screen is on.
This phone has so many pluses, and the screen is one of them to me.

Yeah, i'd maybe compare it to the store display if possible because I think mine looks excellent, and the display in my local stores looks really good too. I usually keep my display cranked up pretty high, and it has much better blacks and white levels then i ever had on my evo or evo 3d.

How does it look if you use a different Gallery app like QuickPic?
I, for one like the screen. There is no "burn in" like the galaxy s phones and the Nexus S. I can see the pixel separation, but it doesn't bother me a bit. Maybe you guys need to quit making out with your screens.
I'm not looking for fantastic. I'm coming from the EVO which, even though washed out compared to a Super Amoled, looked fine to me. The problem appears that in areas of high contrast or in shadows, the blacks are too black so picture actually looks blotchy. Believe me when I tell you I'm not the overly picky type. But image quality is definitely a step down compared to my Evo.

Nice explanation of PenTile. I also have no issues with the display and think it is quite good in comparison to my E4G. I wonder if the different perceptions are due to astigmatism. Last year I got lens implants that corrected most of my astigmatism (some remaining, but not much). Maybe people with a lot of uncorrected astigmatism are more sensitive to the display? Maybe it's the opposite and astigmatism makes the effect harder to see and I have just enough astigmatism left to make it not noticeable?
I thought the display was fine, and while I could see the screen door effect, only really noticed it while looking for it.
Then I installed a game where blue was a predominant color used in the background, Wisp Lite, currently featured on the Android Market. Anyone would immediately notice the screen door effect on the background, it was so obvious.
Mulling if this matters enough for me to consider returning it.

Best screen

I have only experienced the screen from the og evo and the qhd on the 3d but the rave seems to be the samsung samoled screen. Those that have have hands on with other screens what is the best looking screen in your opinion? I have spent time with the retina display on the iphone 4 which is nice but is just way too small for me. I have read the super amoled plus is as good as the retina i just havent had hands on time with it. Is it that much better than the 3d's screen?

I've had the Epic 4g (not touch) and the Nexus S 4g, EVO and EVO 3d and I can honestly say the S AMOLED screens have better color than the Evo 3d but I still prefer the Evo 3d screen.
I prefer the sgs 2 screen is really good too bad is not 720p cause those phones got some really big screen, so far my favorite definition and screen is the iPhone 4, really make a difference when looking right next to another phone , evo 3d is just wash out for some reason

From what I've heard, the lg nova screen is the best screen on the market. I haven't actually seen one though. I thought the sgs2 screen was too cartoony looking.

I am definitely interested in seeing the 720 hd display on the new google phone. I am just amazed how fast phones are progressing. I wish they had a 6 month upgrade plan and even then you would be behind the times. I am still shocked at the camera on the prime though. I know mp arent the only thing that matters but at this point 8 is the standard it seems and many are coming in at 12mp. Hell i remember when phones first got cameras and how awesome everyone thought they were

I had the Nexus one before and right after I switched to the 3D I noticed the screen wasn't as good as the AMOLED. That being said, after a couple days it wasn't an issue, I only noticed after using it for over a year and immediately comparing it.
Side by side there's a difference but the E3D screen is just fine. I wouldn't base any decisions off the screen.

Super amoled is superior in terms of color, but it is darker than qhd. I personally like the qhd, and even with a side by side comparison to the best screen out there I would never have that be what determines the phone I get

This. Especially when using LCD Changer and changing the density to a smaller one..the E3D shines!
My friends have the SGSII, NS4G, and Epic 4G. After using their phones I feel like my screen is definitely second-rate, although the qHD aspect of the EVO 3D's screen is soooo incredibly awesome.
The SGSII may be only 480x800, but each pixel also has 3 sub-pixels, so keep that in mind when bashing it's resolution.
After owning the E3D and now the SGS2, I must say the SGS2 screen just amazes me everytime I look at it. Resolution truly means nothing when comparing these 2 screens.
I do agree that the SGS2 looks more cartoony but I think it just looks more fun because of that. The E3D looks like a much more series screen. The colors on the E3D look extremely washed out when comparing to an Super Amoled Plus Screen. It almost looks like the screen has been sitting out in the sun for months and just faded.....
Speaking of the sun, when outdoors the SGS2 screen can be seen crystal clear as well. It can't even be explained, it is just something you need to see. The screen just cuts through the sun....
You just need to decide what is important to you and go with it. To some the screen means everything, to others not so much.....Either way the SGS2 takes the cake when comparing screens.......
SAMOLED by a mile. As for people saying the SAMOLED screens look over-saturated: You're probably just too used to the washed out LCD look. I truly miss my Epic's screen, even with it having a pentile sub-pixel matrix.
Best things about the sgs2 screen is the color depth, the whites and blacks are amazing. The evo3d screen as a lot better resolution, but you get used to it after a few weeks. As far as the oversaturaed look people mentioned , there are different modes in the display settings to adjust the color saturation to your liking.
I try but i just cant see why everybody likes amoled so much. I tried to love my nexus s 4g screen but couldnt handle it. Its so dark, the whites look like they need bleached. I have noticed that the evo3d only looks bad when someone is taking a video of it such as youtube. I do need to spend more time with the samoled plus screen. The screen is different on the sgs2 then it is on the Nexus 4G. On the sgs2 the screen is nice and bright, far from being considered to dark. You really need to see it in person, you cannot base your opinion off of the Nexus 4G, they are different screens.
I set my 3D to full brightness, and did the same with my bro's Nexus-S 4G ...we then opened up the first level of Angry Birds RIO since the game has pretty much every color under the sun. The colors on the Nexus were richer, with more contrast...but the smaller details were far far better on the Evo. The most obvious difference was the eyes in the birds. On the Evo they were clearly detailed, you could see the outter and inner eye while on the Nexus it pretty much a blur with some pixelation. Try it out. I also felt the 3D had a second rate screen as well, still do actually, but that was a welcome surprise.

why screen resolution and colors are so bad

I have a Photon and a Defy. Why Photon resolution is so bad? I can see the dots on screen...
Colors are so desaturated, specially yellow's...
I'm deeply disappointed with that...
Its the pentile hd display, yeah some colors show a little pixelation when you look closely, but ive always loved the screen and thought the colors were better displayed than the over-saturated colors in AOLED(did I spell that right?) Anyways, at firdt I thought the pixelation might bother me but It doesnt one bit cause its such a small difference for me atleast.. I love the color contrast though!

Still, I had the HTC Hero S (US Cellular's equivalent of you Sprint folks' HTC Evo Design 4G... but without the 4G) for six days, and my wife got the Electrify, and after seeing her screen, I traded. Hero S/Evo Design has the same number of pixels, but a smaller (4.0") screen. It had a very nice screen, but I wanted a bigger one. And when I got my Electrify, it just felt like the right phone.
I've seen Samsung's AMOLED screens. They aren't bad, but they aren't a selling point, to me. My last phone was a Samsung, and the call and reception quality going from Samsung to Motorola was huge, and the battery life isn't bad, either.

Good post.
I moved from the EVO to EVO 4G to Photon. From reading reviews at time I considered the Photon, I was fully prepared to hate the pentile screen. But, my eyes just plain did not see the pentile pixelation (from reading posts at the time, some peoples' eyes saw it, some didn't). I spent an hour in the store before buying the Photon.
During my return window, the Samsung Epic came out with larger screen (physically, but lower-res). Back to the store I go - I found the Sammy's screen to be way over-saturated wrt colors, and washed out in the sun.

ATRIX user opinions

Hey guys ! I own a HTC EVO 3D right now, but I'm going to switch it for an ATRIX 4G tomorrow.
I want to ask you... How do you feel about the ATRIX's screen? I know it's a TFT LCD with the RGBW matrix, which is what makes my brain twist and say "OH SH*T NO". What's your say on that?
Also... voice quality... Is it loud & clear enough? I mean, compared to other phones you might have owned...
And the camera?
-----
And... most of all... the chipset?! How is it going for you?! I hear it is actually less performant & more power-hungry than Qualcomm's dual core, but I don't really know...
awh its a great phone......but stock gb rom sucks. u wud love it if you are a social networking fan!! for me im pretty happy with my cm flavored atrix. the chip is good, camera is okay.....and about sound i dont give huge scores! display hmmm u shud love it!!

This whole weekend I've been going back and forth, deciding to trade it for an ATRIX, then changing my mind and returning to HTC... Now I was sure I was gonna make the switch, but here I go again, returning to HTC.
The ATRIX's screen is TFT, as opposed to HTC's S-LCD, and that wouldn't be THAT MUCH of a problem if it didn't had the RGBW matrix... I read a lot on the phone, and that would just ruin my experience, probably making me feel the urge to blend the phone or something.
I think I'll stick to HTC... If only Motorola were to use standard RGB...
good luck

I feel somewhat bad for all this (the whole back and forth thing). No phone has everything you need... at least not without some drawbacks, GOD DAMN IT
Sense is hard to leave, especially with sense 4 out now.

as you are concerned about the screen, maybe i can help a little. first off, i have really great eyesight, pentile matrix displays make me want to hurt people, but its not all bad. the qHD resolution makes the subpixles much harder to see, i personally can only see them when its about a foot or closer to my face, some colors i can see it farther away, such as green, i can see some distortion about a foot and a half away form my face. but its very hard to see, its a HUGE difference form say, a captivates pentile screen.
next thing to keep in mind is the colors. yellow is a big complaint, i dont notice it to much but the colors are far from perfect, i feel the screen is a hair cold by default, and there are ways to reduce the blue if you are rooted, i did a guide on it a while ago.
last thing is gradients, they look bad, that is the only thing i really am disappointed with, you can see artifacting as the colors shift, although i dont know if im crazy but it seems better then before.
keep in mind that all of these things you will get use to with a little time, i got use to them quickly and i am a stickler for screen quality. one of the goods of the screen though is the battery life, the type of display saves a ton of juice thus making one of the longest lasting phones of its time. now that, I love.
im not trying to bash my own phone here, i love it, and always will, its an amazing device and was everything i wanted when i got it. the screen is something i can live with, and the the battery life plus the higher resolution makes up for it in my book.
let me know if there is anything else you want to know, hope i was a little helpful.

I do a lot of reading on my phone, and having that screen would kill me... Plus the gradients thing... I noticed it in a 480p YouTube video, ffs, lol.
The battery is all nice, the chipset seems good enough, but even though the screen is all bright in the sun, its downs are making me wanna throw rocks at it, lol.

You know what, I think I'm gonna give the ATRIX a try. I'm going in a couple of hours to see that guy to make the trade.
Got the phone. Tinkered with it already. Love it so far! This PenTile isn't really awful.

Which phone do you like better now since you got the Atrix? Just curious.

It's hard for me to answer this.
I loved the EVO 3D. The back design made it attractive, and the overall body... it was nice, alright. Also, the big screen was neat.
There were a few things that made me change the phone. The screen was somewhat yellowish (had to use Filter Your Screen to add a blue alpha so it would not be so yellowish on white menus and so brownish on gray menus - but that still didn't fix it 100%). The earpiece was creaky, and so was the loudspeaker on maximum volume...
I wanted the ATRIX for it has a bigger battery, a decent chipset, and a more robust design. I mean... the body is more compact - feels better in the hand, more secure, I'd say. Besides, on this phone I no longer feel the urge to smash it on the wall for yellow whites or creaky voices in-calls.
Also, the screen is just AMAZING. Even though it's a TFT, and it's got PenTile, I find it really nice. The whites are PURE WHITE. The blacks are BLACK!!! Also, if you know that ICS wallpaper... it really looks better on the ATRIX. The colors were somewhat washed on the EVO 3D - proof that S-LCD still needed work. To be honest, I think this TFT screen can be compared to the Samsung Galaxy S's SUPER AMOLED.
Even if I turn down the screen's brightness to the minimum, the whites still blind me during night time, especially if I hold the phone somewhat close to my face. On full brightness, in the sunlight, it ROCKS !!!
The only thing I wished for is some aluminium on the body. It's all plasticky... good thing I have an iCase Pro (MOMAX) case, otherwise... I wouldn't really like it .

Good reasons and observations. I really liked that. They way you responded about the evo 3d, I wouldn't buy that at all. Thanks for sharing.

Don't get me wrong... MY phone was a bad unit - about the yellowish screen. Another friend had the 3VO and it was white, but compared to my ATRIX now, the ATRIX is white and his 3VO yellow.
The creaking earpiece was also a problem that occured later - I believe some water got in, idk.
The EVO 3D is a great phone.

Nice Review. The atrix is a BEAST especially when throwing Neutrino behind it!
I came from a iPhone 4 to the Atrix a few months ago and it has it's ups and downs. My only real gripe of any consequence is the battery life. It isnt terrible, but you have to do a little tweaking (at least with CM7, I found so). I've been playing with ICS on it and so far have noticed a slight improvement in that arena. Plus ICS feels like a much nicer UI overall.
I love the size of the screen on, and I personally have found no problem with it. My main use for the phone (other than calls) is web browsing and reading using the Kindle and nook, and aldiko book readers.
And music playback of course. I have one playlist or another going most of the time if I am not talking to someone (desk job, might as well get my tune on).
My headphone jack failed a month or so after I bought the phone (used, off ebay), and while it was at Motorola getting fixed (warranty job, only paid shipping to them) I was back on my I4 for a couple weeks and I felt a lot better getting the Atrix back, and not just for Android. You just get addicted to the larger screen so easy.
My secondary gripe of any matter is the placement of the power button. Just feels very awkward to use 1 handed. But I added a wake on volume mod instead, and that problem was solved.

I hate the iPhone. Overpriced, tiny 3.5 incher... Besides, Android is much better. Otherwise I would have gotten an iPhone...
If the EVO 3D unit I had didn't had those few things that I didn't like about (malfunctions, that is), I would've sticked to it. Just letting ya know. I consider the EVO 3D above the ATRIX (in some aspects, at leasts).
But compared to the iPhone 4S... The ATRIX wins big time. Bigger battery, better CPU, bigger RAM, better/nicer OS, bigger screen... The only thing I'm concerned about is the GPU. I know it's an 8-core UltraLowPower processor, but... does it really perform as good as/better than the PowerVR's or Adreno's?! I, for one, would say no but that might be some driver-related issue, which should/might be fixed when the official ICS drops...
Im glad you liked the Atrix. Its a pretty dam nice phone, im im love with it. Very fast and smooth. qHD screens are awesome. Great battery life. Feels very nice on my hand. Nice design, IMO. Welcome to the atrix family.

Ouch, gonna have to disagree there. Nothing really beats iPhones os, its sooo simple and easy to use. Best thing about it is that they DONT need quad core, even my ipad2 runs perfect with gaming. The OS is so perfectly optimized that even with my wife's 3gs, there are only a few hiccups. The one thing that I will agree with is the 3.5 inch screen. That's too small. Imagine a 4.3 inch with that retina display....mmmm......
But these are all personal opinions, and no one will ever agree.
