I think My Vibrant is "Bricked"? Help! :( - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. Unfortunately, I am stuck on getting my Vibrant up and running. I've never had this issue until now. I am familiar with ODIN and all that is needed to restore back to stock. Everything has always gone smooth until this point. I was ODIN'ING back to stock, as usual, from a 2.2 ROM. I started the ODIN operation but then after 1 second or so, it showed that it failed. Then I unplugged it, like usual whenever it fails, and plugged it back in. And for some reason it couldn't read it. I've tried on two different computers already and it can't be read at all. Here's a picture that I found on a thread....BUT, instead of the phone and computer Icons being in the MIDDLE like normal, its on the TOP LEFT for some reason. I have no idea what is there to do now. Usually I am one to figure things out but I stumped right now. Please if there's any help I would really appreciate it! Am I gonna have to buy one of those JIGGS?

And by the way, I already tried Re-Installing the Samsung Drivers!

did you change your bootloader?

just keep trying with odin
took me 2 hours of constant trying to get it to connect last time i soft bricked

Okay here is what you meed to do.
1. Take battery out of phone.
2. With battery still out, connect USB to CPU and put it in Vibrant
3. With battery still out, hold the two volume buttons.
4. With USB in amd fingers on both volume keys, put battery in.
5. Enjoy download mode.

Nope I wasn't messing with any bootloaders. I was just reverting back to stock.
Hmmm well my computers can't seem to read it at all :/. It doesn't seem like that will work....

Have you tried
1. Start Odin
2. Plug USB cable into pc
3. Power off the Phone.
3. Pull the Battery.
5. Plug USB cable into Phone.
6. Press and Hold: Volume UP + Volume DOWN + Power, all at the same time.
7. Re-insert the battery.
8. The phone will power now, when the screen starts a cycle of going to a BLACK screen, release ONLY the POWER button.
9. When you see the download icon release the volume buttons,
10. Odin back to stock by putting the PIT file into the appropriate area and the .tar in the PDA area

try it the other way, mine doesnt do it like the poster above said
open odin
plug usb into pc
hold volume buttons
plug usb in to the phone

@op Just so you know it will not show "download" on the phone. But odin will recognize it and you will be able to transfer to the phone as usual.

Just open odin, turn on your vibrant, and plug in the usB..Odin should recognize and you can odin back to stock.

I just tried it and it didn't work guys :/. I seriously think ODIN won't fix this... :/

I had this problem before. What you need to do is, set Odin up with the 512 pit and JDF tar files. After that plug the usb cord into the computer but not the phone. Then pull the battery on the phone and wait about 10 to 15 seconds then, put it back in and push the power button. Hold the power button in until the phone to PC symbol pops up for the second time. As soon as it does plug the USB into the phone. A yellow com port should show up at this point. Your phone will still show the phone to PC symbol. This is normal. You can Odin back to stock, from that screen. Good luck. This always works for me.

Just had exactly the same problem with the Phone -> PC symbol in the top left screen. This happened after a segmentation fault in Heimdall during a bootloader flash, after which I removed the USB cable whilst in Download Mode. This was necessitated since Heimdall maintained that "Failed to detect compatible device".
I then pulled out my WinXP netbook in desperation to try Odin, but no joy, no device found.
I have a GB bootloader with Download mode remapped to VolumeTop + Power; so this is what got me into the good ol' yellow Download mode:
1) Plug OUT the USB
2) Turn on the device/ Possibly hold in until Phone -> PC pops up for a second time
3) Hold VolumeTop+Power in for 7+ seconds
4) Good Download mode should pop up
5) Attach USB cable, then the device should be seen.
Since you seem to have a Froyo Bootloader, you should do the VolumeTop+VolumeBottom+USB attach move.
It seems that if you persist and try different combinations of cable connects/restarts/button holds that it's going to budge eventually.
Let us know how it goes.

I am getting the exact same screen...cant get it to recovery or download mode.
its not bricked, I had this many times while pulling the usb or battery while in odin. Plug in the usb and press and hold vol up and down and power. When the screen goes black let go of power while continuing to hold vol up and down. Should bring you back to download mode
I was able to get it into download mode and flash the rom. Thanks

How'd you get it to flash? I got that same screen but in ODIN it just sits at cache.rfs... nothing good happening after that. It is basically frozen.

OMG I finally got it. I had to leave ODIN open after it stuck at file analysis. I then took out the battery of the phone and put it back into download mode. I click start in ODIN and thankfully... she's flashing back to stock 2.1. I had tried a million different ways... ODIN is not exceptionally stable. No bueno. I think I'm going to keep the stock Kernal cause this was scary... lol.

What you have to do is run Odin with the usb connected to the phone, then you unplug and plug the usb back in, hold the vol - and + with the power button at the same time, once the screen goes black, release the power button, but keep holding the vol - and + buttons and Odin will recognize your phone. then the phone will be at the downloading screen
That's how it worked for me.
What did you do to get your phone in this state? Try to root ??

Only suggestion I can give is to keep trying, that's how I got my phone out of that dreaded state in the OP's pic.
Man I'm in the same boat. I tried the key combination many times before this. I was flashed bionix 1.2 w/OC and was using ROM Manager to revert back to my previous ROM which was stock and when it was done it rebooted and would stay stuck with the Samsung Vibrant screen. I ended upsing ADB to get it into download mode and the other modes but I tried to use ODIN to restore after it was in download mode and it just seemed stuck. How long does it take to usually load the kernel? Well it was taking so long so I just pulled the USB plug. After I did this I got that cellphone and computer icon. I've tried many times to get it into download mode or restore mode many times with the volume button and power button and haven't had any luck at all. I'll keep trying. I hope this really works.
I have tried every combo mentioned and a few others along with every button combination, I read it has to do with what rom you were using before the phone -> computer icon. I came from bionix 1.3, I would love any help to get this thing fixed before my wife finds out...
This happened to me earlier today instead pull the battery out and usb then put the battery back in open odin attatch the usb to the computer and then hold down volume up and volume down while plugging the usb to the phone finally and it worked might take a few tries and if odin doesn't recognize the phone unplug the usb and plug it back in if it's already in dl mode
if ur device is hardware locked, ur as well as bricked at this point, i cant get mine out
An easier way to get to download mode that I have been using. Have Odin open. Turn off the phone. Hold volume up and plug in the USB. Goes straight into download mode for me every time. Not sure if this will work with the hardware locked phones (I don't have a hardware locked phone - got it on launch day).

Old thread, I know. Just my 2 cents. I only found this to be true of Odin v1.0 since v1.3 seems quite stable.
If your using odin and it hangs during flashing never pull the usb always pull the battery out first then the cable the phone will stay on when you pull the batterycuz the usb is giving it power but once the usb is pulled the phone is off and you won't be stuck with the dreaded phone ! Computer screen.

[Q] Vibrant Bricked? Can't Find Solution [SOLVED]

So this phone has been sitting in my closet for over a month and want to try and find a way to get it back to working. I am pretty sure it happened flashing a euro ROM and it not recovering or I re-partitioned a 2.2 odin ROM (can't remember). I have tried every trick posted on this forum with no luck. Here is the way it boots the second I connect the USB to the phone and/or when trying to do the volume up/down and power button. I can access the phone view adb and tell it to reboot download, but just goes right back to recovery. I even tried pushing the update.zip but no luck as it can't mount e:/.....

Problem is it won't go into download mode.... the second the USB is plugged into the phone it boots into recovery.... I see the battery symbol for maybe a split second and it goes right into recovery; doesn't require any buttons to be pushed.
adb reboot download = reboots into recovery...
Have you tried reinstall packages and then trying to get into download mode?

I had a similar problem once. Here's what worked for me:
Take your battery out
Plug in USB cable
Hold both volume buttons
Put battery back in (while still holding the volume buttons)
I'm pretty sure that was it, but if not try fiddling with those steps a bit. The gist is that you should be holding the volume buttons when the battery goes in, which gets the phone into download mode right away.
Had a similar problem and that seemed to clear it up.

I have tried for a good five hours combined over a two day period and have come to the conclusion the buttons don't do much. The only thing I do know is the up and down are no reversed...
The only thing I don't get is some instructions say to hold the vol down, home, and power. I assume that is only for the EU versions as the home button on the vibrant is a soft key.

Nada... just boots straight to recovery
The only way that i was able to get into download mode was to hold just volume down and power while the phone was off.
So pull battery.
Install battery.
Hold Volume down+Power button.
Then connect usb.
Or you can try to hold volume down+power button+plug in usb at the same time.
I tried every other way of getting into download mode but none worked.
Hope this some how helps you.
So, as long as the USB is plug in, the phone immediate enter recovery? Even when the phone was originally off, then the USB is plugged in later?

Yes, the second the USB is connected it goes straight to that screen in the OP. I don't have the opportunity to hold the vol up/down as it boots instantly (and holding them prior to connecting the USB ends in the same recovery screen)....
I have since bought a new Vibrant but would like to get this one working so it can be sold....
Well I actually FIXED this phone!!!! I followed the below instructions in the past but failed to read it completely...... You must following step 4 to the tee and not press the re-install packages until you are constantly forcing the push from ADB. Needless to say it pushed the update file and then I removed the battery and instantly got into download mode and flashed back to stock.
DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.
You need the Samsung USB driver and you can get it from Here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
First Part
1. Download update.zip from the link below. This was post by another member.
The post is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804305
2. Place the update.zip in tools folder so you can push it into your phone by using adb command
3. Plug usb into the phone and your phone should be on the Android system recovery <2e>
4. Use your volume button to select reinstall package, don't press power button yet.
5. constant "adb push update.zip /sdcard" from computer , you will get permission denied.
6. While you are constantly pushing the adb command from computer. press the power button on the phone so it install update.zip from sdcard.
7. This is the part where it force adb push into sdcard without permission
8. once the update.zip install completed. unplug the usb cable from the phone and take the battery out.
9. put the battery back to the phone then press on both volume button.
10. While holding both volume button , plug in your usb cable and it will boot to download screen.
If you need use Odin to flash your phone to original stock rom. Go to the Second Part
5. constant "adb push update.zip /sdcard" from computer , you will get permission denied..... not sure what you mean by that thx
Try taking out the sim card while entering download mode, that's what did it for me, and don't make any odd facial expressions and keep a good posture. Gremlins...
Is your phone Loki? Use Odin. You'll be Thor!

[Q] Kind of a brick question.

Hey everyone.
So the other day I got excited about the CM7. I was following the steps to install it. i made a mistake. after i flashed the kernel. i rebooted my phone now all i get is a screen with picture of phone with a yellow triangle attached to a pc.
The thing i've tried to do was
1.take out the battery
2. take out the sim(which was already taken out to be in my gs4g)
3.took sd card out.
4.plug usb into phone and computer
5.put battery in while hitting the vol +/- minus rocker and nothing happens.i have odin open when I( try this.
my computer just wont pick it up.
when I plug in my gs4g it picks it up right away.
I've spent all weekend working on this.
also i think they only way before hand for me to get into download/recovery was for me to use adb. could that be why I'm not getting any progress?
Thanks in advance. Also sorry if this question has been asked so many times..
Is your problem getting into download mode? Or is it that you get into download mode but Odin won't recognize the device?
If its the former, getting into download mode is a bit tricky in CM7, I've done it plenty of times though. This worked for me.
1. Unplug the usb cord.
2. Pull out the battery.
3. Plug usb cord in.
4. Hold down vol+ & vol- and power button
5. You will see the loading circle or whatever it's called, when the screen goes black let go of power button.
You should be in download mode now. Sometimes you won't get the loading screen and the phone'll just boot up, if so pull the batt and try again.

not getting that at all no com ports show up.. I'm going to try this on a different computer.
When I get the black screen with that icon in the middle and I plug it in, Odin recognizes it right away. Furthermore, I've only gotten it before when I go into download mode(yellow sign + android sweeping) and Odin doesn't recognize my phone and I pull the battery then turn it back on.
Get odin up usb cord connected to the computer but not the phone
Remove the sim card the sd card and the battery and do the vol up and down boot. Then while holding the vol buttons down at the same time plug in the usb.
That should get you back to recovery.

I've been trying all of those methods. Before this happened the only way for me to get into download was using adb reboot download command in adb.
The computer does not recognize in odin. I've tired this on two computers now.
I have all the drivers installed. i uninstalled ed reinstalled etc. used two different usb cables etc.
not sure what else to try. other than a baseball bat....

[Q] CWM based Recovery Loop

My Vibrant keeps restarting over and over. The Vibrant screen appears and then a flying android in the background appears with this text
CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.2

SD Card Mounted
Verifying SD Card Marker
SD Card marker not found

E:unknown volume for path []
E:Can't mount
Installation aborted.
then it reboots. over and over constantly... I would love just to go back to stock software even.... Just have no idea what to do!
I used the AIO Vibrant Toolbox and used the rom file for Version 10.
I looked at the SD card in a card reader and i see no ROM File at all... so i copied
ICS_NBv10.zip to the root of the SD Card and renamed it ROM.ZIP... and that didnt do anything. also tried VIBRANT_ICS_Passion_boot.zip but to no avail. I admit that im a stupid noob.....
Please help this dumb noob.
Pull the battery and use the three button combo to go to recovery, should be fine.
Ok I pulled the battery and held down volume down, power and the home key, does pretty much same thing, ive tried it many times and once and awhile id get a spinning wheel icon? which would come up, then go to a black screen then come up, basically in a loop, if i let go of the keys, it ends up going to the error message i posted and ends up in that loop again
I suggest you ODIN back to stock and start over.

Move all files to Desktop.
- Mount your phone and move the rom to the internal (sdcard/ ) & the update.zip file (if needed)
- Power down the phone, or pull the battery.
3 - DOWNLOAD MODE
*NOTE - IMPORTANT*
On my PC, ODIN will NOT work when my camcorder is plugged in.
If you notice ODIN not working, you may pull the battery if it has not started/hung (again, at YOUR risk, not my fault/responsibility). Remove any USB devices just in case if you are worried about it, I have to.

(preferably the one that came with your phone *My N1 cable doesn't work??*)
3- Power down Phone if you had not already.
4- Remove the battery.
5- Plug USB into Phone.
6- Hold down BOTH volume buttons and while holding both, insert the battery.
7- Two to three seconds later your phone will be in Download Mode.
Be mindful to not remove connection while ODIN is running.
** ALT METHOD
You can also just power down the phone, open ODIN, load the pit and tar, connect USB to pc, hold both volume buttons and connect USB to phone. This is how I do it. Some are not able to do this so the above instructions were used just in case. **
4 - ODIN

Go back to ODIN on your PC. Should be a yellow box under ID COM, Something like COM 5. If not, likely a problem with your drivers, see this THREAD FOR DRIVERS that I created. Should help. If you were on Cyanogen or MIUI you may need the Nexus S Drivers, Google them.
Click the PIT button, Select the PIT file from desktop
Click the PDA button, select the TAR file
** Re-partition is checked now in ODIN - THIS IS APPROPRIATE!! **
Click Start. Unless ODIN hangs, you should see a progress bar start soon after. The process takes a few minutes and you told ODIN to reboot once done.... so... when your phone boots up, you are on stock JFD.
IF ODIN HANGS ON YOU:
- Are you using my files (all 3 of them?)
- Did you check the MD5 using Hashtab (LINK)?
- Are you using the cable that came with your phone?
- Have you tried other USB ports on you PC?
no good, as i try to put it into recovery mode, it keeps rebooting, I even hear the USB connecting and disconnecting as it goes threw its boot loop, odin doesn't even detect it since it reboots so fast.

No, you need to put it in download mode, not recovery mode.
1. Pull the battery.
2. Connect USB Cable.
3. Hold Volume Up & Down.
4. Put battery back in.
5. Download mode.
hold volume up and down as i put the battery in? or hold them then put the battery in?
Put the battery in, hold both volume buttons, then insert USB cable.

I did what you guys told me to, and it just keeps doing the loop. I had ODIN opened without changing any settings, plugged in the usb to the phone, then I went and held volume up and volume down and inserted the battery and kept helding them, I get a pinwheel that comes up for 1 sec, doesnt spin, then another one for another second which also spin, then screen goes black and then I get the CWM based screen that makes the phone reboot, which it does, and then the Vibrant screen appears, goes black, then the Vibrant screen appears, goes black again then the CWM Based screen comes up, then we are back to the Vibrant screen, its a endless loop. I held the Vol + and - the whole time.
Do you have Gingerbread bootloaders?
I dont think so... so no
Any Ideas?

[Q] Nokia Care Suite and a "Bricked" Lumia Help

I have one of these phones where a standard factory reset on the device (just using the phone function) failed. I'm now trying to use the Nokia Care Suite tool to reflash it. The symptoms I have is that whenever I use the vol down + power button reboot, the phone goes to a screen where I just see the Nokia logo and that's it. Somewhere I saw people talking about using the vol up button so I gave that a shot and now I have a phone with a lightning bolt and a cog in the center of the screen.
When all I had was the Nokia logo on the device, when I used the Nokia Care Suite, when I used the volume down + power button to restart the phone, the tool would detect the phone for a second and then as soon as the Nokia logo shows up it gets undetected.
I'm assuming the lightning bolt next to the cog means the phone needs to charge, so I've plugged it in for the moment. My questions are:
1. Does anyone know what the lightning bolt + cog means?
2. Is there a special button combo I need to do when I connect the phone?
3. I can't seem to figure out how to download the ROM. It's ATT so I know it's the RM-820, but does the phone need to be connected in order for me to download the ROM. I am online in the tool, but I can't see to download the package without the phone being connected. I'm in the 5.0 tool for which I believe that the Data Package Manager functionality has been integrated into the tool. Is that correct?
Thanks,
Sean

I have the same question here. Can someone make a tutorial for unbricking the Lumia 920?
If you have only got to the screen with the cog and lightning I imagine that you have not managed to flash anything yet. Why it's not booting though I am not sure. Here are some things to try.
1, If you are stuck on the cog with lightning you can force the phone to switch off with a hardware reset. Hold the volume down key and power button together until the phone switches off.
2, Once the phone is switched off, I would recommend to restore the phone to factory defaults until a proper guide is released, if you can't not do this via the menu on the phone there is a way to do this via the hardware. Whilst the phone is off hold the volume down and power key until an exclamation mark is shown on the screen. Next, in the exact order press: Volume up, Volume down, Power, Volume down.
Your phone should then perform a factory reset which is nokia logo followed by cogs (no lightning) this should take about 3-4 minutes.
Hope this helps.

A little more background from me. I got into this state by trying to do a factory reset on the phone menu and what I got was two cogs spinning for about 5 hours. I turned it off and then I was stuck in this state where all I get is the ATT logo followed by the Nokia Logo.
When I hold down the power button and the volume down key, my phone turns off, vibrates and then I get an ATT screen logo, the screen goes dark and then I get a NOKIA logo on a black screen. I don't get an exclamation mark. I can't seem to get it to stop at an exclamation point and I have yet to see an exclamation point across any reset attempts. Is there a trick to getting the exclamation point? The other screen I managed to see was a cogs + lightning. Once the battery charges it just goes back to the Nokia logo.
Thanks,
Sean
When the phone is completely off start by holding the volume down key then the power button. Sorry if it sounds like I repeating my self but I have just done that on mine and it has worked, you need to hold them for about 5 seconds.

I don't mind at all. I appreciate the help. When I hold down the power button and the volume key, the phone does turn off, but only for a split second. It then vibrates, the ATT screen launches and then the Nokia logo shows up. I can't seem to find a way to get it into a completely off state. even if I lift off the buttons once the screen goes dark, it immediately kicks back on.
What happens if you hold down the volume down button and power button then when it switches off briefly you keep your finger on the volume key only?
Here is what you do.
Open Product Support Tool For Store 5.0 from NCS
Click File, Open Product, type RM-820 in the filter and click Open.
Click Programming, and select Recovery.
Click Find Online, and select the proper ROM for your phone based on the colour and if it is Rogers or AT&T/
Click Download.
Once it has finished downloading and shows up in the Properties window highlight it and click start.
Then reboot your phone using the volume down and power button. Make sure it is connected to your PC at this point too.
It should detect the phone when it boots up and start the flashing process. Sometimes it will time out before the phone is detected, just click start again quickly.
You may need to install the drivers for your device from C:\Program Files (x86)\Nokia\Nokia Care Suite\Drivers
or C:\Program Files\Nokia\Nokia Care Suite\Drivers on 32Bit.

when hold down the power button and the volume down button and then it switches off briefly, and then keep my finger on the volume down key only it displays the ATT logo screen and then it goes black and then it goes to the ATT logo screen and then continues to repeat itself as long as I have my finger on the volume down key.
When I hold the volume up key instead, I get the lightning bolt with the gears button.

Well I thought I was in the clear. My SIM card is reporting as invalid. When I put it in my old Lumia it works just fine, and it worked just fine in the new Lumia prior to it bricking. I've given it about 7 or 8 hours now to connect and no luck. I put it back in the old Lumia and it still works. I tried ATT support and they said I should try a new SIM but I'm wondering if the reflash has put the phone in a state where the SIM won't activate?
My phone was updating craigslist app, then rebooted on its own, and now it's froze at the black screen with the white nokia logo. i have 7 zip but the link you provide for navifirm, i'm not getting it to download as it either downloads 7 zip or some crappy toolbar bloatware. Can someone please help as id prefer not to return the phone, as it would take weeks to get a replacement most likely.
Damn i had to hold power and volume for quite a while for the phone to actually shut down again and reboot. Hell I may need to get insurance for this thing. Not cool

Hi,
can anyone help?
My Nokia hangs in Reset-Loop, so is set it to recovery mode.
But now, I can not start Nokia Care Suite on Windows 8. I can install it, I can start it, but when choosing an app I get an error message (can not get error, application error) and Windows 8 says: the application is not working anymore... i tried different version, uninstalled, restartet, installled, restarted... but can not get it to work.
is there an alternative flashing method for lumia 920?
