It's been really weird, but in the pull down "quick settings" the free memory will show something like
Total memory: 803mb
Used: 695 Free: 108
Which seems very low.
But if I look at running processes in settings/applications, I get 284 used, 432 available.
So, the questions are:
1. Are these two "memory" values refering to the same thing? They do not add up to the same total.
2. Which one really indicates system resources - I get Sense restarts whenever the quick settings value goes below about 125 - and I don't even know why this should be happening.
3. isn't this phone supposed to have 1gb of ram?
One thing i'm sure about...it is not the app space remaining.
Anyone have any insight?

I should point out that tapping on the memory in quick settings takes you to the running process screen.

i have the same question..
in notifications, it says:
total: 803
Used: 538
free: 265
is this normal? or what is it that is using all that memory?

No... It takes you to the new built in "task manager" app, which is very different for some reason.
I wanna know this as well.... Im kinda paranoid about RAM and thought that 1gb was more than enough, but the htc task manager really dissapoints me when i see what i have free (160-180 average) but i have over 400 free in the stock android process manager.
Which one is more accurate? And why are they so different?

Not sure why these are so inconsistent, but I'm much more leaning towards the built-in Android version through the setting menu.

HTC sense UI , really tho that's why the Samsung galaxy s 2 kick ass on benchmarks , because sense takes a lot RAM , you didn't think this nice looking animations weren't doing anything to your device right ? Is been like that since the EVO days will need to get used to it now

Ahaa.. that makes sense, that sense is using it of course.. you have a point ..

Wow this is awesome as for user lag
I had phone freeze up 3 or 4times and after taking a few "3d" pics I hit home and my launcher and home screen looked holographic lol
I'm always at 140mb free all the time even after hitting kill tasks still only 150-200
Bloated UI sucks ass
We need miui or cm7 on this *****! HTC sense 3.0 and this RAM leaking gingerbreak sucks ass
Ok I'm done now

I have the same.. i dont get why the system is taking up so much ram. I understood with my evo 4G.. we had 768mb ram.. leaving us with a couple hundred .. but now we have 1 gig and have even less .. wtf?? my ram jumps between 130 to 300 all the time.. lol normally under 200 tho.

I think evo only had 512mb if I am not mistaken.
I haven't even checked my memory....I'm afraid to...It'll just infuriate me. Sense is such a bloated pig, the interface is sloppy and the only lag I see on the phone is from Sense....and then I run a more tolerable launcher on top of sense so I'm just pissing more memory away on that...
I can't wait for Cyanogen...though I will definitely try MIUI...it'll probably finally be as smooth as it's supposed to be. It was great on my 4G, but, just lacked that super-smooth polish on UI interactions...

I'll tell you right now either one is a vast improvement if you prefer them....LP is a little stuttery in places--perhaps the phone is too fast!??
But I have never seen ADW actually look so perfectly fluidly smooth...yes...buttery smooth. It was always a little rough around the edges (motion-wise) compared to LP, but that is no more.
I'll try ADW I've had it on my g2x dual core and it never lagged.. but then again that was stripped vanilla 2.2
I just honestly think gingerbreak aka gingerbread has a major RAM leak in it as well.. in all phones I ran Gb roms or even the pure GB nexus s it seemed to have less available RAM. . .
I'm insearch of ice cream aosp leak! Paying with my left nut and right kidney!

Yea, EVO 4G has 512mb of RAM.

After closing everything I'm usually around 330mb free. Still should be more. HTC should automatically put 1gb of RAM just for sense.

Yea... There are a lot of services and crap running in the background. Even the Spiderman games starts up by itself if you see it in Avanced Task Killer that reads everything. At least when i kill all there i get almost 400mb free as opposed to the htc one. This isnt necesarry but looking at my history and having to go through what the HTC Mogul was, i started to get parranoid about RAM.
All in all, 1gb is more than enough so im not worried, be glad we dont have a Sensation that deals with the same crap but with a 200+mb handicap

hi yall
i also have this BadBoy! but i notice'd that 1GB ram isnt enough for it
after startup i have 416MB free and after an 1hr usage got 338MB free.
damn! where all the Ram goes??
by the way got stock'd Sprint 2.3.4 not UNLOCKED BL or root.
another Q to you...have yall notice'd that the phone become sluggish after the MR-5 OTA update?

ram is meant to be used. the fact that your phone is using it is a good thing.
1gb should be plenty. use a task killer app to stop all the backgrounded apps your aren't using, that should free up some memory.
That's a huge amont of free ram. My epic used to run with 90 or less.

what about your device? how much ram do you have after reboot?
To put this in perspective the Evo 4g ships with 512 Mb of ram.

About same as you. Try installing go launcher on evo 3d and photon which amazed. EVO 3d ships with 1gb as well but usually only has 120mb free...

thats strange i have here Galaxy s i9000t stock rom and after bootup
it have 210mb free according to toolbox optimize.
So I noticed that the lte shows less ram then the 3D anyone know why this is? Thought lte had more

If it is like in the computer world I would guess more of it is going to the GPU or other components in the phone.

Though it says that there is so much of the RAM being "used" in reality only a portion is actually being used. There are many programs that are dormit in memory waiting for you to execute them, by remaining dormit in memory they can run much faster, its in a way caching.
Now if you want to control that, download AutoKiller Memory from the Play Store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5ycy5hdXRva2lsbGVyIl0.) and you can adjust the way the Kernel manages the dormit apps and free physical memory. Please read the help and the Dev's website for more understanding of the tool and the way Android manages the RAM.
Yeah, it's probably allotted for something else.
I noticed this with the Sense 4 ROMS for the 3D. All of a sudden had like 200mb total of missing RAM by flashing the ROM.
I just upgraded to EVO LTE and is very nice its fast quick beautiful screen very smooth but can't figure out what's is using my ram I'm using 400 and have mabe 270 left to used but when I combine those it doesnt equal 1gb of ram
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
htc sense use ram also i don't know how much but it's alot. Don't worry about the ram cause the system will end whatever you have open and not using to make more ram.

Possibly, but when I add my used and unused ram together I only come up with
660 which is way short or 1gb ram

I think I remember the EVO 3d with more ram. Like 720 something.
Well, there are plenty of hidden system settings. The number that you see in Task Manager or Settings is how much RAM that can be used for anything. The ram you do not see available is being used by things that are UNABLE to be removed from RAM because they are essential to the system running. That is the reason why we see nothing close to 1GB.same thing goes for computers, you can either see Installed Memory or you can see Usable Memory. Installed Memory on LTevo would be 1GB and Usable Memory on Stock would be around 670MB(IIRC) for me.

I noticed this also, coming from the EVO 3d (also with 1gb of ram) vs the 4gLTE. IIRC the 3d shows 804mb total vs 680mb. I figured it had to do with the 3d running gingerbread/sense 3.5 vs the 4gLTE running ICS/sense 4.0. My friend who has a galaxy nexus also with 1gb of ram, shows around the same amount of ram in the task manager.. either way I am absolutely amazed with this phone, not one issue or hiccup so far..
