[A] Service issues? look here!!! - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So a good many of the posts in here all ask the same question, and so I thought I'd create a new thread where we could collect all of the possible fixes for service issues, and cut down on the forum clutter:
Q: WHY I NO HAVE G'Z?
A: Attach your battery cover! It completes phone circuitry in two places, enabling the cell antennae. If you have bars but not G's, shake your phone real hard. If the battery falls out, you forgot to put the cover on!
A: Turn off fastboot and reboot! Settings>power>uncheck fastboot. Fastboot doesn't allow the phone to fully shut down, and when starting up a new rom this sometimes causes the radios to never get initialized. A proper reboot should fix it.
A: Make sure you're running the right radio image! The radio image is the 'PG05IMG.zip' that you flash via hboot (hold vol- while powering on). Froyo roms use the MR1 image, Gingerbread roms require the MR2 or MR2.5 radio. The proper radio is more than likely linked to in the original post of the rom you downloaded...
A: Check your radio settings! Open dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#* and select 'phone info' (many roms have access to this menu baked in via settings>wireless and networking, or via a standalone utilities app.) Go to the bottom where it says 'Set preferred network type'. If you want 4g, make sure 'CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto' is selected. If you don't want 4g (save battery outside of LTE range) select 'CDMA auto (prl)'. Try power cycling the radio by selecting 'turn off radio', wait until your radio is off (watch the bars), wait 10 seconds, turn it back on.
A: Check your APN settings! Go to settings>Wireless & networks>Mobile networks>Access Point Names. There should be one entry, 'Internet':
Name: Internet
Apn: VZWINTERNET
proxy: <not set>
port: <not set>
Username: <not set>
Password: <not set>
Server: <not set>
MMSC: http://mms.vtext.com/services/mms
MMS Proxy: <not set>
MMS Port: <not set>
MMS protocol: WAP 2.0
MCC: 311
MNC: 480
Authentication type: <not set>
APN type: default,mms
You may not be able to edit the info if there's garbage in there (I think this info is supposed to be stored and locked on the SIM card), so create a new one with the proper info. Occasionally the SIM gets freaked out and forgets its APN info.
A: Your SIM card might be broke! This has happened to a few people. A new SIM card is probably $6 from a verizon store.
A: Verizon might be screwing with cell towers! Expanding their 4g markets often creates hiccups in coverage or service as they screw with hardware. Contact verizon and ask about your area.
A: Something about your eHRPD thing is wonky!

landle in the Android Central Forums has done a nice job explaining how the TB uses the eHPRD 3G network to speed the handoff between 3G and 4G data. Problem is, it ain't working for a lot of people.
Good news is there's a fix -- no hard resets (which until now had been the recommended fix), human sacrifice or other unpleasantness. Here's what you need to do:
Go to the ThunderBolt's phone dialer. Enter ##778# and hit Send.
You'll get a pop-up labeled EPST, with the choice to "View Mode" or "Edit Mode." You want "Edit Mode."
You'll be asked for a password. It's 000000.
Now flip down to "Modem Settings," and then choose "Rev. A."
Change the setting from eHRPD to "Enable," hit OK, then press the Menu button on the phone and tap "Commit Modifications."
That's it. You're done. The phone will reboot (don't worry, you're not losing any data here), and things should, you know, actually work. As landale points out, you'll want to change this setting back once Verizon gets its network sorted out. But in the meantime, enjoy your, erm, new 3G! [Android Central Forums] Thanks, landale!

If there's any other potential fixes, let me hear 'em and I'll toss them in this first post!

great compilation of common fixes, thanks added

The MMSC for mine reads: http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms
think that might have something to do with my phone doing this or was that a typo on the OP?

I am reposting my response from the missing 3g thread. With a few extra details.
I am on vacation this week and my 3g disappeared in the middle of a hotspot session yesterday. I spent all afternoon flashing, clearing, etc, and my ultimate solution is the one below from android central. I am certain this is a Vzw doing something to the towers in the area as my Xoom, my wife's iPhone, and her iPad2 all kept 3g the entire time.
I am and have been running the same Rom, Das_BAMF_1.32, for months without ever having seen this issue before. I travel the country for work so I have used my fair share of towers for whatever that is worth. I have tinkered other the CDMA auto PRL settings as well but the method below is what worked for me. In my case the loss of 3g is absolutely tied to the eHRPD setting.
Interesting note is that when this issue was active in could still get internet via 1x as long as the battery cover was off as is normal with the cover off. As soon as the cover went on and the antenna circuit was complete the unit would lose 1x and all connectivity. That is how I was sure this was not a sudden hardware failure.
The other odd behavior is that both with or without a battery cover, I could get a 3g icon while performing a check for software updates. The icon was active but there was no data for apps. I suspect the system is coded to perform those update checks using the legacy network protocols.
This should be added to OP.
If the link fails Google "Thunderbolt 3g problems". It will be the first result.

Mods: I'm thinking this should get stickied....

I don't have my 2 Tbolts (yet!) so maybe it's different but from what I recall the most likely cause for reception problems is the radio.
So is the *228 update still recommended as a troubleshooting step for the Tbolt? (I'm assuming people would have to be still stock?)

this new solution with the eHRPD fix is exactly what tech support walked me through doing about 3 days ago. It works but I'm kinda angry I have no 4G...guess 3G's better than nothing though.

DO NOT TRY *228 on a TB. you will fry the SIM card.

*228 doesn't do anything in these phones, as the 'programming and roaming capabilities' are updated via the sim card, not cell towers. Feel free to do it, it'll just tell you what's up. And no, being stock has nothing to do with it.

Umm...what? This is a big fat lie. Trust me, try it. I've done it multiple times.

One thing i've noticed is is overnight i have spent nearly 60% of the time without signal over the past few days since rooting my phone. I have everything setup properly, right radio for the rom etc. This has happened with several different roms, and i dont remember it being this way before i rooted.
Is the thing in battery stats inaccurate or is something wrong with my phone? Im in a low signal area but ive never noticed 60% of the time no signal
Edit: Could it be that the night stand in which i leave my thunderbolt is a dead spot? I used to always charge it when i was on stock overnight there but my battery life is such that i dont need to anymore so i may not have noticed before

wow really? the first vzw tech I talked to told me that it "really messes up the network" or your phone or something if you do that, and the lte toggle isn't "as bad". he was asking me how I got my phone to quickly switch from 3g to 4g. and he said the network technicians told him this... ha.
if vzw had their network working properly in the first place they wouldn't have to deal with people switching between 3g/4g and evdo/ehrpd.

Voice/Data Phone Sim Card

Has any of the new owners try to use an at&t phone sim card in the JS to access the internet?
I ask because when I bought the Galaxy Tab 7 I couldnt use it out of the box, I had to root it and change the Rom in order to use it.

not sure, haven't tried, but what I will say is it is set to use the tablet/laptopconnect broadband apn. so putting you phone sim in would require you to use the wap.cingular apn which you would have to add manually to the apn list as it isn't there. i don't see why it wouldn't work and at&t would notice that your sim doesn't belong in the device as it is a valid registered imei in their system and not unknown like an unlocked tablet.
Does the 4g LTE require a new Sim Card? Is it different from the 3g sim card?

I am not sure but I dont think so because it is also H+ capable but my question is about a Data only Sim and not the same as the phones use.
AT&T uses new/different SIM cards for LTE. When I bought my Jetstream, they showed me the 2 SIM cards that work with LTE devices and complained that the SIM cards aren't obviously marked as LTE cards. 1 is for postpaid and 1 is for pre-paid. They hadn't received shipments of the LTE cards yet, even though we're in an LTE market, so they have to use the one in the LTE device's box. My AT&T 3G SIM card only gets HSPA+ in the Jetstream.

Ok so it works? And is your phone sim?
It shows the HSPA+ icon rather than LTE, and the wireless settings show it's connected to the HSDPA network. However, the built-in broadband APN doesn't work with my 3G smartphone SIM, I'd have to create a MediaNet APN and try to connect.
pdagal,
Using the same SIM as in the Focus my display first says:
A&T Initalizing... (Please Wait)
After a few minutes (long, long wait) it says... gave up waiting.
Anything special you had to do to get the unit to work using other ATT SIM?
You may need to get 4G HSPA+ enabled on your account and SIM. Several months ago I was using an HTC HD7S and it wouldn't work in AT&T's HSPA+ phones for data. I had to call up and tell them I was testing an Inspire 4G and needed HSPA+ enabled on my SIM.
That won't get you working LTE (that requires a different SIM), but hopefully you'll at least get HSPA+.
MANY thanks, will do that tomorrow.
3g SIM
Your existing 3G SIM (depending on age) will just simply need to be provisioned for LTE.
As well as the APN is different. Without updating your SIM you'll only get HSUPA or 3G.
Thanks, appreciate the info.
Hm Interesting. I have a unlocked dev jetstream and I tried putting in my 3G/HSDPA Sim with a active phone and data, and it'll only hook on edge, while same sim card in my phone can grab HSDPA instantly. Not sure why...

I'm not sure if your question was answered, I just placed my sim from my SGII on my Jetstream and it works. I had to add the APN "phone", that's all i did. I'm getting decent data speeds 4.5, 4.8, 5.3, 3.9 down and 2.9, 3.3, 3.1, 2.8 up.
There were two apns there, I believe one was activate and the other broadband.

[Q] X2 on Alltel?

I have searched and searched and cannot find an answer. I recently acquired a Verizon Droid X2 and had it switched to my Alltel plan. Phone works great, but I cannot fix the dreaded no 3g no mms issues.
I have tried everything I could think of, but nothing. Wifi works fine, dialing out and receiving calls work fine, and sms text works fine.
I looked at the apn setting, which are not easy to find without the help of a 3rd party program on the market (apn shortcut), but now what I see is 5 entries for Verizon related services:
Verizon CBS
Verizon DUN
Verizon FOTA
Verizon IMS
Verizon Internet
But they all have a lock icon next to them, so I can't change any settings. I have tried creating a new entry but it doesn't save for some reason (my wife has the milestone x for alltel, works fine, I used tried to use her settings)
I have tried updating the prl, tried things like ##778 and all that, but none of these work for alltel.
Can anyone offer any help? Phone is almost worthless for me if I can have 3g and mms.
Thanks,
andyw123,
If you are subscribing to these service's that's something you should call Alltel / Verizon about. Verizon ownes Alltel I'am not sure if you know that.
{In early 2009, Verizon Wireless acquired Alltel, although the Alltel brand will remain until it is gradually phased out through the middle of 2009. Alltel was a large regional CDMA carrier offering service in 33 states, primarily in the south, midwest, and west. In 2005, the company acquired Western Wireless, a smaller carrier that operated under the Cellular One brand with service in 19 western states.}
Hope's This Help's
Thanks for the quick reply!
Ya, I tried that. They basically told me in a polite way that I shouldn't have taken a phone that wasn't part of Alltel's current line up and activated it on Alltel. Alltel told me that they could activate it, but couldn't guarantee that it would even work at all, which doesn't suprise me at all coming from Alltel.
I stopped at a total of 3 places, 2 alltel's and 1 verizon store. The first alltel told me they couldn't activate the x2 at all, but he tried, which messed up my current phone (he somehow deactivated it). Then went to Verizon next, they told me that I couldn't activate it at all because it wasn't part of Alltel's line up. Then I went to a corp store to get my old phone fixed, and somehow they were able to activate my x2, but with no data and no mms. Told me I was basically out of luck.
So, trying to decide if I should just sale the x2, which I don't want to do because currently the best phone Alltel has is the milestone x, which my wife has and it is dreadfully slow, slower than my old htc desire.
Anyone know of any other options that I might have?
Thanks
To access the programming menu open the dialer and dial ##PROGRAM the spc code is 000000

Thanks Juhde,
I've already been in that menu, made sure ALL (except for my phone number) settings matched my wifes milestone x phone, and still nothing. I'm not an expert, but sounds to me like it has something to do with the APN settings, which I cannot seem to change.
Funny thing about this is, I can "copy" the apn-conf.xml file or whatever it is called from the system/etc folder on the phone, and it shows my custom settings that should work (the same file was on my HTC phone, which worked). But, when I use the program from the market called "APN Shortcut" to view my apn settings, it doesn't show anything other than the verizon defaults. I have tried to add a new APN entry, but when I click save, it acts like it did save it, but no new entry.
I'm wondering if there is another location that is saving these entries and somehow verizon has figured out a way to bypass the default location to save apn settings. Later, I'm going to search on the phone and see if there is another xml file that contains those settings.
Thanks for the help!
I'm no expert at this, but a lot of the times "replacement" files won't function unless the permissions are set correctly. I'm not sure what the permissions should be for that file but you might want to look into it.
EDIT: after taking a closer look, the app APN Manager seems to be a better program for adding an apn. Wither it works I can't say but when I used it to swap apn it stuck after reboot.

This isnt alltel but i got my phone activated on another carrier.like you talk and txt worked. It wasn't until I flashed a few prl's and found one that got my 3g and mms working.mms still works spotty sometimes ,however.
I have 4 Verizon branded phones (mine is an x2) all using an alltel plan. I don't understand why you are having any problems at all
Do you mind give me some info from your x2? Like what the apn settings are set to and what prl you have?
Thanks!
i also have an alltel dataplan with an X2, no issues,
and no offense, but i dont know what is privileged info and what is not, so i wont be sharing
sorry

WTF do you mean privileged info? I think he is just wanting to compare the numbers, what is he going to do with the info from your phone, besides compare to his current setup?
There is nothing that I can do with your apn settings or your prl version that you are running. This is just so I can see if my setting are the same as your working settings. I have compared them to my wifes Milestone X and they are the same.
On another note. Here is something wierd. I was able to erase all the apn setting from verizon (i think) and then I added the apn setting from my wifes phone, clicked on save, and then it went back and didn't actually save them.
The more and more I think about it, I am wondering if it is a PRL problem instead of the apn settings problem. Seems alot of people got this problem fixed on their phone by doing the prl change. Problem with that is, most people say to do a ##prl to fix it, that doesn't work on this phone. The only code I can get to work is *#*#program#*#* or something like that. So, anyone know of a way to manually change my prl on my phone?
The prl update number for Verizon is *228 since Verizon owns Alltel I think it's the same.
Sent from my Android device.
Ya, thats it if you want to download whichever one that want to give you, but it won't let me put one on there that I got, if that makes any sense at all.
Basically, is there a file location that I can copy it to or maybe a way to install it like I would a zip from recovery or anything like that? I already have the file download that I want to try to use, but basically going to try a few to see if I notice any difference.
p.s. Now I think my phone is actually only ringing part of the time, the other times it seems to go straight to voice mail even though I have 4 bars and not in roaming...
Thanks for the input everyone by the way!
Sooooo you have dialed *228 and it didn't work? Verizon also has forced and secondary prl update numbers. Try *22898 & *22899. Also what does your network banner say? Alltel? Extended network? If it says Extended network you might call Alltel up and ask them where the nearest Alltel owned tower for you is, drive to its area, reboot and try to update again. 3rd party towers *usually* don't carry the data encryption key your phone needs to activate the data plan.
Sent from my Android device.
Ok, well... I called both the other *228xx numbers, and I was greeted by alltel. I clicked on 2 and it said "Your phone already contains the latest update" and that was it. and as far as my banner, it doesn't actually "say" alltel, or anything like that. Just shows with the 4 bars, or a triangle if I am in roaming. I know from past that in a near by big city does have alltel towers around, and I was there but no difference.
So, still back to square one.
Thanks again for all your help!!
Another quick update. I finally found a way to update just the prl file. So, I tried 41003.prl and updated it manually (was not too difficult, just alot of trial and error). Phone worked just fine, but still no 3g coverage. Next I went to 31005.prl which is an actual alltel prl, but still the same effect - no 3g.
So, I went back to the latest prl from alltel which is 31011.
So, I am pretty sure that the prl file is not the problem. I guess now I need to figure out the apn setting issue that I am having, which is basically the default verizon settings are not working for me, even if I am in a verizon territory (like columbus ohio, big city). Using an app that was suggested to me on this thread I was able to delete the verizon apn settings fine. But when I went to create new apn settings, I went through it all and clicked on save, but it didn't actually save them. So, back to square one.
It would be nice if someone who is currently using a stock x2 from verizon on alltel would tell me what their prl version number is and their apn settings are (using an app like apn shortcut - found on the market).
On a side note. One difference I noticed. Looking at my old android phone (htc desire), it shows the same apn setting basically as my wifes phone, but the MNC number is 120, mine is currently set to 004, which is not changeable.
Several weeks later, and still no 3g data at all. Wireless works flawless, and phone calls work (actually phone works better than an alltel phone)
One thought that I had but not sure if I posted about yet...When I got the phone from the guy I got it from, he said he "thinks" it has a bad esn. So, I got it on a chance, afterall I could sell it on ebay for more than I paid for it with a bad esn. Anyway, if it does have a bad esn on verizon, I'm not entirely sure that Alltel would check it or even care about that. So, since alltel is owned basically by verizon, but still a separate company as of now, I wonder if verizon is blocking data access because it might have a bad esn.
I guess my next step is to call verizon and see if they can tell me if the esn is bad. I have tried a verizon store, and they were NO help to me at all, and actually very rude. Alltel just tells me that "I won't be able to get data because I am not using one of their phones" which is crap.
So, I think ultimately we have eliminated the prl possibility, apn is still my number one concern, but now I am leaning towards a bad esn. If that is the case, does anyone have any ideas on what I might be able to do with a bad esn? I know it is illegal to "change" an esn, and I don't think it is possible right now with the x2, but do I have any other options besides going back to my old phone (htc desire - not a bad phone, just want the larger screen and faster performance).
Thanks again everyone. Everyone has been alot of help!
If you wanna take drastic measures, search for a program called radiocomm, it's what motorola uses to program the radio.
A word of warning: if you change something with radiocomm and do it wrong the radio will become useless and the software is VERY complex to use. It could take you literally years to figure out but who knows, maybe you can find out exactly what parameter needs tweaking. I'd advise caution using radiocomm though. I just wanted you to know of the option.

Jellybean ROM straight talk apn

I know there are probably a million threads on this site about straight Talk ATT settings, but I have yet to find one specific to my phone (Samsung Galaxy S2 i777) or ROM. I believe the ROM I have is called Hellybean, and I have had it for about a month using different combinations of APN settings with no luck as far as 4G goes. Before rooting I was using the stock UI with ICS that came through the network updates. I have seen in some threads people are saying you can't get 4G with ATT on straight Talk but I was getting 4G before I rooted! I at the time I was located in Central NY and using the default settings that come with the straight Talk sim as follows...
Name: straight Talk
APN: att.mvno
Port: 80
Mmsc: http (colon slash slash) Mmsc (dot) Cingular (dot) com (the actual characters of course)
Mms proxy: 66.209.11.33
Mms port: 80
Could it be because of the root? Did straight Talk maybe just stop offering 4G with its ATT Sims? I know it wasn't LTE but it was still better than 3G in my opinion. Any help is appreciated.
Update
After doing some more searching, I discovered that it the problem might be my modem--I am currently using I777UCLK3. Also I made a mistake on my earlier post, I am using Shostock3 ROM with Jeboo kernel. So what I'm going to try to do is re flash a newer version of this ROM, same kernel, and try out some different modems. I am flashing using the hell raise method I found in another thread as this is a i9100 ROM.
Still looking for apn settings suggestions. Any help is appreciated.
... And even as I try to post this... The phone randomly reboots. Nothing but problems since the beginning, but one problem at a time.

Hello I want some one who has a LGOG and t mobile to do a small trick on there phone for me plz. 1st turn on air plane mode then go into secret menu by dialing 3845#*970# then go to lte only>modem setting>lte band selection>lte only, now exit the secret menu then turn air plane mode off and plz tell me if you can pick up lte now? I have done this trick on my phone and it seems to work, but make sure to set it back to automatic in the secret menu or else u wont be able to get calls or make calls, and when u do this it should still be on lte network, depending on it location(if it has lte that is), and if u do get a phone call does the lte come back after the phone call ends? Because for me it doesn't. Thx
Edit: look at post 4

Ya that first trick does fail sometimes but it does work after u do this. For this u need a second phone, it can be any phone that works on tmobile network. All u do is take it sim card and put it into that phone and try to open a web page or Anything that makes the phone use data. Then take out the sim card and put it into it LGOG,but make sure it LG is in lte mode only!!! Because if it's not it well start on 4g but when it's in lte mode only it well start on lte, after that u can change it back to automatic or else u won't be able to get phone calls, thx see I have lte but it doesn't last cause if u make phone call or get a.phone call it well disappear
I have 2 phones I know this works with one is a old school flip phone from Samsung and the other is a.iPhone 4s. Thx

That's interesting. I hope LTE can stick, otherwise, it's meaningless.
It doesn't if u make a phone call or get one it goes away but u can fructose get it back with the first trick I posted at the top with the air plane mode, but it won't work 100% of the time, was hoping some one can look at this in more detailed level.

So you got LTE working with this APN ? Which ROM you are on ?

There is a build prop edit for nexus 4 which gives them LTE . I was wondering if any one try it yet on OG

No I am on att, just trying to share something I stumbled across. From what I read the build prop was needed because N4 didn't come with LTE.

LTE
Hello, i have a theory on why the phone LGOG dosent pick up LTE on t mobile. The 2nd trick i provieded in post #4 kind of works but it wont last unless u leave ur phone on LTE mode which is bad if ur expecting a phone call or trying to make one because LTE dosent have voip, so it goes back to 4g, but it wont go back to LTE on its own sadly.
In the trick i provided with the moving of ur sim into a t mobile supported phone, i belive it sets the sim card onto the t mobile network, and when u move that sim card back into an LGOG it keeps that same network that it was on, but if the LGOG trys to register its self on the network the network sets it back to 4G because i belive the 4g network on the 1900 band seems to have higher priority on the phone then the LTE AWS band (1700/2100). This seems true for all AT&T phones.
As i said this is just my thory on why it dosent work for most people. some people seem to be able to pick up LTE with no problem. I even bought an HTC one X+ to see if i can get LTE on that but nope it didnt work eather, most likely because of the same problem, it has the 1900 band which tmobile set up for 4g, for iphone users.
ALSO can some one please teach me how to flash the .33 radio from nexus 4 onto the LGOG so i can see if that gives us LTE, thx.
I guess I'll give it a whirl as soon as I update the radio
dont bother with the radio if ur on t mobile the radio dosent seem to pick up the network operators. i tryed it yesterday.

[Q] Optimus G Data on T Mobile driving me insane. Please help!

Hello all, so I recently consulted your fine website about purchasing the Optimus G to use on T Mobile here in Pittsburgh. It seemed to me that people were able to get HSPA+21 and LTE on the phone in the right circumstances, and that was good enough for me. So I bought the phone, unlocked it through cellunlocker.com and everything seemed to be going smoothly. I punched in the standard fast.tmobile.com APN address and I got 4G HSPA+ right away. I then proceeded to drive into downtown Pittsburgh, which now has T Mobile LTE, to see if it would connect. It didn't connect and stayed on HSPA. At that point I drove out of the city and went back down to EDGE and my phone no longer connected to HSPA anymore, only EDGE, until I went into my Mobile Network settings and selected the carrier directly. So I went into T Mobile to ask why my phone won't automatically connect to the most OPTIMUM speed and he couldn't figure it out. As a last ditch effort, we switched SIM cards and my phone automically jumped to LTE and his was stuck on HSPA. So hey, we figured it must be the SIM card keeping me from LTE. He gave me a new card, and it was on LTE until I left the store's broadcast radius. From then on, same story. The phone seems to pretty frequently get stuck on EDGE speeds and I contantly have to go and manually set the network to get HSPA+. What's more, I can't seem to get LTE under any circumstances. Can somebody out there please tell me what's going on? Do I have a defective phone with confused radios? Is T Mobile having a hard time syncing with my AT and T device? Do I need to do something with my APN or Mobile Network settings? Does this have anything to do with the way I unlocked the phone? Is it because the LGOG shares radios for LTE and HSPA or something that it won't default to LTE when it's around? I love absolutely everything about this phone and would like to keep it, but if it keeps behaving like this and won't even give me LTE or consistent HSPA+ then I might as well just get a crappy LG Optimus L9 that at least was designed for the network. Any insight you guys can offer would be much appreciated. Thanks so much!

Try flashing the 33-84 radio: http://www.mediafire.com/download/wec8eeext05x8ge/LTEhybrid33-84.zip
That's what I use to flash my LGOG. That's from the Nexus 4 radio thread, and from T-Mobile N4 devices. I was able to add a different APN for AT&T easily, maybe can do the same for your T-Mobile.
- Combines the latest .84 radio from T-Mobile N4 and .33 LTE support.
- The N4 Radio thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2087227
I see. Well seeing as I'm kind of a noob at this your post intimidates me a bit. How dangerous is it to put these N4 radios onto an LGOG? Will I risk bricking this thing or losing signal forever if I screw it up? Also, I'm assuming that the device must be rooted to do this? Also, if you think it's safe to try is there a thread or something that you can link detailed instructions for? I've never done anything like this in my life...I felt like a rebel just unlocking my phone! Thanks!

Not dangerous if you use TWRP. Just make a backup of your current stuff, and if it doesn't work can just restore. It won't hard brick your phone. And I've had it flash on more than one rom so far.
Root needed?

I see. Will the phone need to be rooted for that app to be used for the radio ROM? That's probably a silly question to ask on this website especially...but there it is.
I just got this phone and I'm loving it..came from the gs3. I was looking for a thread like this...hoping for a way to unlock the aws band..will root and flash tarp and try this tonight.

I don't get lte at all with the FAST apn, I get very fast h+ with epc.tmobile.com. It all depends on your area though, if your tmo towers are refarmed for the correct band that our att phones support.

would like to know if there's any update, thank you!
I have almost exact same problem. T-mobile lte not working for me, always getting the hspa+. I went to store and asked for a replacement sim card, then bang, lte shows up with the new sim card. Right after I walked out of the store and left in about 1 minute it's gone, forever. I'm not able to pick up any lte signal anymore. When I put this sim card in my ogp, it fires up lte right away.
I have read in another post people reporting they get lte with unactivated sim card but it went right away when they activated it. Really hope someone to explain for us how this situation is happening.
Thank you for all your great work.

I couldn't edit my last post so I'm putting a new reply to add some info.
Both my og and ogp have the same apn settings. I tested them using the same sim card.
I just put another unactivated sim card in the og and surprisingly it picks up lte immediately. I don't want to activate this sim card right now so I can't tell if it would go away if I activate it. I hope this info would help a little bit.

Help! I have the exact same problem. I have a brand new att lg optimus g and unlocked it. Popped in the sim and bam LTE! Ran a bunch of speedtests, drove to my friends house and it switched to 4g and hasn't come back. The guy at tmobile wasn't sure. ...any help ? I'm going to root this and try flashing a new rom...maybe radio?
Seems to be an issue with this device, perhaps it's doing something to the SIM cards (who the hell knows) because mine did/does the exact same thing, and here's my particular example:
When I first got this LGOG last Sunday (8 days ago) I put my T-Mobile microSIM in it (one of the TM9190 series SIM cards) and got LTE off the bat without any issues. I kept the stock ROM on here for the first day or so and never had any issues and then I got into doing the typical root/unlock bootloader/install recovery/backup stock ROM/flash custom ROM/etc routine and even after that I was still able to get LTE working almost immediately.
A few days ago I noticed that the LTE wasn't being picked up, and it hasn't since. I've flashed several radios for testing (.33, .48, .33-.84 hybrid, etc) and the ones that are LTE ready still didn't get LTE so I just flashed the whole thing back to complete JB stock (JZO54K, the last available LG build) and even that didn't help - I've yet to see LTE show up in any respect at all with that SIM card.
Now the interesting part:
I have another microSIM that had prepaid service a few months back, bought it at the same time as the one I use for my primary service - they were on sale from T-Mobile online for $.99 each so I got two and kept the other one around just to have it.
In spite of all the flashing I've done in the past few days, with like 5 ROMs tested, a kernel or two, and maybe 7 flashes back to pure stock using LGNPST and the LGE970AT-01-V20j-310-410-MAR-08-2013 ROM (the stock one), after all that flashing torture I put this LGOG through, as soon as I put that other SIM card in it - which is not active at this time - and powered up the phone I got an LTE signal right off the bat without a problem. Had already made the APN changes to fast.t-mobile.com so they just kicked right in and wham, 4G LTE right there on the status bar.
And yes, the SIM cards are the same "series" (?!?!) with TM9190 imprinted on both of them - they also have the same code on the front side (620048) and their serial numbers are just a few digits off in sequence - like I said, I bought both of them with the same order so, it stands to reason they'd be from the same batch.
Loaded a few web pages on the T-Mobile prepaid billing site (it's what comes up when you insert a prepaid already activated but not presently in use SIM, very limited but it does work), checked the system stats, everything showed me I was connected to T-Mobile with their LTE service, this phone, and that other SIM card including the status bar icon being the traditional 4G LTE one (big 4, little G, little LTE under it).
Then I rebooted the phone and that was that, the LTE capability just up and vanished like a fart in the wind, and I've done most everything that I could do - including reading a few hundred posts in two dozen threads - to get it functional again and it just doesn't work anymore.
I suppose it's not a big deal to me since T-Mobile's HSPA+ is fine with me, I regularly pull in 10-15Mbps on a speed test in various locations (was out earlier today testing stuff in the eastern parts of Vegas), but I am somewhat pissed that I am unable to get that LTE functionality working again.
Tried:
- a complete stock flash, several times, of the AT&T JB ROM, no dice
- all the currently available LTE-capable radios, no dice
- an AT&T SIM but it's not provisioned so it doesn't work at all (T-Mobile doesn't do that, hrmmm... their SIM cards work months later even after the number has been assigned to another customer, go figure)
- all the hidden menu options (3854#*970#, WCDMA automatic, tried forcing LTE only, several other things), no dice
- tried manually setting LTE only with *#*#4636#*#* using custom ROMs, no dice
- adding the LTE enabling lines to build.prop, no dice
Nothing works, so I'm only left to conclude that either a) T-Mobile is doing something funky (highly unlikely), b) something is borked with the phone (potentially true), or maybe c) the phone is doing something to the SIM cards after a reboot or any change in the network mode from LTE to anything else (leaning towards this possibility more).
I can't explain it, I can't figure it out, and I can't get LTE working anymore but as I said, the HSPA+ is enough for me as here at home the LTE signal is somewhat weak (1-2 bars at best whereas HSPA+ pulls in 5 bars and a -61dB signal almost constantly).
I wish I could figure it out because I'd like to do more testing with LTE enabled but apparently once LTE gets disabled for whatever reason after having it actually working, not once but twice now it just dies and never becomes possible again.
Stranger things I suppose...
If anyone does ever figure this fiasco out, post whatever solution you came up with or discovered so the rest of us can give it a shot as well 'cause I'd love to be able to enable LTE if I so chose. This is pretty frustrating in the long run - if it never ever worked at all that would be one thing, but having it work then suddenly just disappear never to work the same again, that's just pooched.
Slightly off-topic, but how's the battery life compared to AT&T? Or, in general, is it okay?

Thanks for posting your experiences. I've had the exact same problem, though I've never been able to get LTE working at all with my phone. I'm planning on taking a trip to a T-Mobile location within the next few days and see what they can do. Maybe they'll let me try putting my SIM in some of their display phones to see if I can get an LTE connection. Then at least I could probably rule out the SIM as the problem.

Make sure that your phone has the fast.t-mobile.com APN info in place (just create a new APN with that info if needed, maybe call it T-Mobile LTE and see what happens. My guess is if they put a new unused SIM into your phone it'll most likely kick into 4G LTE right from the start (as long as the APN is in place) and then at some point it'll switch to HSPA+ and it'll never go back like it has for those of us that have noticed it.
Who knows... it's probably just one of those things.

Could be...I've always had my settings on T-Mobile LTE, and I even called T-Mobile and confirmed every field in the settings with them. When I explained that I still couldn't get LTE, they had no other solution for me. The lady on the line didn't even know that LTE was faster than HSPA+, so I wasn't exactly expecting any sort of resolution. I think the reps in-store will be more suited to this type of issue.
