Gps getting worse and worse - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can't even get to one place without it losing signal after locking. Then I get to sit there for a few minutes until it locks again. It's terrible. I'm on the newest com rom 2.1

I'm having the same problem except even my 3g signal is terrible. This is my 3rd fascinate.

Try turning on your wifi when you turn on your GPS.

Something that eliminated almost all GPS problems I was having was to just leave GPS on. I habitually would turn it off after I used it, and I could never get a lock when turning it back on. Now I just leave it on (doesn't hurt, since it sits idle using no power until an application calls for it) and I get locks very quickly.

[Q] Should I exchange my Thunderbolt?

I've been using Android phones since the first Droid in November, 2009. My most recent phone (before my Thunderbolt) was a Droid Incredible. I loved the incredible but upgraded to the TB on the last day of unlimited data so I could lock it in for 2 more years.
However, there are some anomalies, aka problems, with the Thunderbolt that I didn't experience on the Incredible. I'm hoping you can help me decide if this is because of a faulty phone or I have to live with these.
1. GPS. I leave the GPS on all the time. I know, it's a battery hit, but I use it enough to just leave it on. However, on the Thunderbolt, after I've picked a destination in Google Maps, I often get a message at the bottom of the map stating: "Waiting for GPS". Yesterday I drove over 20 miles before it locked into GPS. This happens frequently. On the Incredible I never saw "Waiting for GPS" ever. Not once. Do I have to live with this? Is this the nature of the beast? Or do I have a faulty unit?
2. Data connection. Often when I try to do something data-wise such as the browser, etc. I get a message stating there's no data connection. I look at the notification bar and see that there are 3 or 4 bars in my signal strength area but no data information. There's no 3G, 1X or 4G indicator. Nothing. That area has just vanished from the notification bar. I've tried turning data on/off, I've tried going into and out of airplane mode, nothing turns data back on. I eventually have to hold the power button down and tap on "reset." That does the trick and I'll have data once it's reset. Again, is this normal or is there a setting somewhere where I can coax data into coming on. Or is this a faulty unit?
3. Screen dimming oddness. I have the car holder. I like it a lot. When I put it in the car holder I see the little lightning bolt over the battery indicator indicating it's charging. I have set the settings option to keep the screen on when it's plugged in so I can see the maps while driving. However, after a period of time the screen goes dim. It doesn't turn off, just dim. Touching the screen brings it to full brightness. However, that's dangerous while driving.
When this happens I notice that the lightning bolt doesn't appear over the battery any more. It's as if the charger stopped charging and I am running on battery. However, that can't be the case since the battery never drains. Even after 5 hours of driving the battery doesn't go down. It just doesn't have a lighting bolt and the screen will go dim. I can dismount and remount the phone in the car holder and the lightning bolt will reappear. As long as the lightning bolt is there the screen won't dim. But after a while the lightning bolt goes away and the screen will dim again. This is very annoying.
Any help on these issues would be greatly appreciated.

The GPS is sadly a known issue but a fix can be found here. I use OMFGB and have flawless GPS even w/o the fix.
Your issue with data is kinda odd. Perhaps you can try flashing a newer radio. A list of Radio's and ROM's that are compatible with them is here
I am also unsure about your Car Dock issue since I dont use that feature. The above link for radio's and ROMs might fix that issue as well.
I dont recall having any weird issues like that when I had my 1st Thunderbolt, a side from call quality problems and bad battery.
I ended up taking it back and got an Incredible 2. never had any problems with the Inc 2 but did not that the battery was only a little bit better then the Thunderbolt's(during heavy usage) & since I did like the bigger size of the TB I ended up trading with someone on these forums and now I have a T B again. Same battery issues & same call quality issues.
I think once Verizon gives the $400 deposit back after the 1st year im just going to buy somwtjing new.
I had I similar issue with the data connection disappearing all of a sudden. This started to happen after I flushed MR2 OTA radio. I have since tried MR2 leaked and R2 gingerbread radios and both did not have this problem. Good luck!

Thanks for the quick responses. Currently, since this is a corporate phone, I don't intend to root or change roms. Any other ideas?
The new gingeritis roms and he new gb radio are both from the new gb base that's supposed to be released for the TB soon. I would try them, you might be on an old radio and kernel that's just not working for your phone, try the new ones and see if that helps. If not, it might be a hardware problem, cuz I have none of those issues on the new radio and gingeritis 3d, or the old radio and stock rom, or any other rom for that matter.

Woohoo! The GPS Status program corrected my GPS issue. Thanks a bunch for that tip.
Now, how about the data issue or the dimming issue. Any thoughts on those two items?

I have had these problems on stock, rooted, and custom ROMs, esp the data signal disappearing and also the screen dimming while using google maps. Not sure what the problem is. Make sure you leave wifi on when using gps also, this will help it get locks faster.

I actually have wifi hotspot turned on when I travel so I can use my Galaxy Tab on the Internet. So, leaving wifi on isn't a real option. However, the tips above seemed to have fixed the GPS lock.

[Q] GPS

I am using CM7 and my gps takes a long time to lock. Anyone has similar experience?
Try having data/wifi on, then heading outside below a clear sky.

Yeah, gps can sometimes take ages to get lock, I have waited for up to 5 mins for lock, this is not limited to any type of rom, I have used stock eclair, stock froyo, rooted eclair and the others in my sig....
If you have mobile internet and network location turned on, i notice it does help to get lock quicker, I think that has something to to with AGPS data loading. Also if you don't use gps regularly the location data becomes out of date, I'm pretty sure there is an expiry on the life on the data, so for example if you use gps regularly daily or a few times a week it seams to lock much quicker....
On another note, I have one of those silicone rubber covers on my phone, when using the "gps test" app (from market) for example I get quite a significant signal increase when I take the cover off, so if you have a cover, try taking it off and see if it helps you...

[Q] Anyone else having a problem with WIFI disconnecting every few hours?

The only problem I have with the new EVO is it will disconnect from WIFI every few hours forcing me to turn WIFI on and then off again. Anyone else have this problem or is it just me?

So far, mine has been rock solid on two routers. Hopefully you didn't get a bum unit.

i personally haven't had this problem, but you are not alone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671744
everyone is complaining about disconnect/reconnect there.
Yes.
Sometimes it's fine sometimes it's not.
I left in the car came back and it didn't reconnect to WIFI on it's own.
Even if I did a WIFI scan it would not reconnect.
Toggled WIFI and it reconnected fine.
FYI, I am rooted.
I have that problem...have had to reconnect 3 times today. No way to tell if you're disconnected either (besides not being able to hit websites, email, play store, etc).
I've had this happen to me a few times. Even with 3g actually. Anyone else experiencing 3g disconnects/reconnects?
Sent from my E4GLTE on XDA.
so, finally this is happening to me this morning, after 2 days of rock solid wifi. this morning I noticed when I turn screen on, wifi was off but connected itself real quick as I was unlocking it. I know it was disconnected because then I got 2 emails and gtalk messages that SHOULD HAVE come trough and notified me half hour prior.
I've been messing with the wifi sleep and power settings ever since, sending myself chat requests to test. it seems 20 minutes is the cutoff time before wifi drops to one bar or disconnects. this is a problem as chat messages should be pushed instantly, not when it gets around to reconnecting itself.
I've tried all different "yes no"options under keep wifi awake, power, etc etc and it seems 20 minutes either disconnects wifi or goes into some low-power wifi that is too weak to get push notifications. it seems to me it checks once every half hour for notifications if "never keep wifi from sleeping" is checked. again, this is a HUGE problem for things like chat programs, fring, anything that uses internet to communicate and not the 3g network.
again,I wasn't having thus problem for the last 2 days till I woke up this morning. This phone isn't getting secret background updates is it?? it still would need to tell me it downloaded and ask if I want to install, right??
me thinks this has to do with network scanning, for lte, as there is no connect or stay connected options for lte,I assume its gonna auto connect and disconnect to save battery like the thunderbolt did. I think its auto low-powering the wireless chip too except 3g in the same manner, unless never disconnect wifi during sleep is checked, and then it just turns it on and off. well,I have one of those weak internal-antenna routers so when it goes low-power, it can't stay connected of or moves or someone walks between me and the router. its a big problem to get chat notifications and Skype calls half hour later than they were sent because my phone is in done kind of auto-power-saving mode. I've spent the last 4 hours messing with this issue.
someone help!!
This morning my WiFi was connected without having to turn WiFi off/on again. I checked the other thread mentioned and my 'Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep' option is already set to 'Always'. I haven't rooted my phone yet so everything is stock.
For me it will show WiFi at the top as if it is connected but I try to do anything online and it won't work till I turn it off/on again. At that point I will receive any old notifications too.
I know for sure it's not my router because my Galaxy Tab continues to work just fine. I also have 3 computers connected to the WiFi with no issues.
Going to try a few more things and fiddle with the 'Best Wi-Fi Performance' option as well even though my signal shows full.
HTC!!!!! its always two steps forward, one step back!! something happened to my phone overnight because now connectivity is just jacked after the phone goes into sleep mode. no new apps installed
its true! the one X forums have way more relevant info than the evo forums have. they have a fix for this, but you have to be rooted. i also found this, which works for our evo:
http://blog.onthegosolutions.com/index.php/2012/05/01/hidden-power-saver-menu-htc-one-x/
How to access the hidden power save menu
Mine seems to not be staying connected when I let the phone sleep for a while. No problems while I am using it or signal dumping just when it's sleeping. I have my settings set to never. Annoying, hopefully fixed with a software update.
After setting the best wifi performance option on it seems that my notifications and wifi work better. Not sure how much this drains the battery though since I am at my desk with it charging most the time.

This started happening to me yesterday, as well as the phone rebooting when it attempts to connect to Veriz -- err, roaming data. I've also had the issue where I had to toggle WiFi to get it to connect to an AP again; these issues used to happen to my OG EVO way back when, so this has to be some sloppy software change management on HTC's part. My EVO's going back to Sprint; I don't pay to beta test.
I already posted in the other thread, but will say this.
Please call sprint and voice your issue. If/when they have enough complaints, someone at htc will look into it and it will hopefully be part of the next update.
Btw, I think one of the triggers is no wifi activity. If you're getting push email every 45-60 min, then wifi remains on. If not, then it shuts off after about an hour.
The hidden power settings applies only to when the battery is low (25 or 15% remaining). Either way, it doesn't fix the problem.
Notch another one with this issue.
I had the issue even when I turned on my phone for the first time. I connected to the wifi during setup and couldn't activate my dropbox because of lack of connection.
Once I got through setup, I turned off wifi, turned it on and it worked again.
But there has been a few other times, especially when I first enter a wifi spot, I need to turn off and turn on.
It is quite annoying. And like somebody else said, there is no way of knowing this until you try something.
this seriously is a huge problem. google voice calls don't come through, emails don't come, anything internet connection. once you on off it,I had 8 missed calls, ten work emails, etc etc. plus if it thinks its connected, shows the wifi bar, but not actually connected, it fubars your 3g data connection for a few minutes trying to connect to something. I am furious about this as I didn't have this problem my first two days with this beautiful phone. now I'm seeing the ugly side, and I don't like it. and I'm not rooted yet so I can't fix it!!!!
the google voice phone calls do NOT come through, and this is a major major problem. wtf was htc thinking??
I wonder if a suitable work around might be to use some wifi keep alive widget running that pings the router every 30-60 minutes...?
I'm not sure, someone more knowledgeable will have to let us know. I imagine it won't without being a huge battery drain. shouldn't auto sync do that anyway? I'll look and try later tonight if don't hear from any experts
I'm not sure what autosync is? I use k9 mail setup with imap/push.

Need some help with cell standby turning on airplane mode, among other things

So yesterday I upgraded to ICS. I am running stock phone with no mods done to it.
I am attaching some pictures for you guys to see what the problem is. The battery level starts from when Unplugged the phone to download ICS.
Now I am connected to wifi all day and night because I get no signal in this place. Its a basement appartment. As you can see, I went to bed, and for some reason mobile network signal popped on the entire time while I was sleeping. This has NEVER happened before. Then I got up and took my phone and put it on the charger and as you can see it automatically went right back onto wifi Fine.
My question is what is going on with that? My only conclusion is the cell standby which was on for 5 hours and 4 mins as you can see in the picture.
It also says switch to airplane mode to save power in area with no coverage. Is that what it is doing ?? and how do I take that off??. I cant go the whole night without having service and not getting anything.
Why would my wifi go off?
And incase you ask, no I do not have any juicedefender on my phone
Thanks guys
The phone shuts off the WiFi when data comes on... That part is normal.
However, I have not the slightest clue why your mobile network would just turn on by itself when not being used. The color of your data readings is a different color than I've seen also. Very strange

I guess I will see what happens tonight. Something is turning off Wifi when the phone goes on standby or when I dont use it for a while I am assuming. Just no idea how that can happen. There are not any settings I can set for it either to stop it. Hope some people on the board have an idea
EDIT: Wait I think I found a solution. What do you guys think?
Maybe this needs to be on always.

Yup, you should have the first one selected if you want wifi to stay on while your screen is off.

[Q] [q] 3g/4g/1x battery issues

SO i have this common problem. Anytime i'm somewhere with a bad signal, my phone gets really hot and battery get really low.
The phone gets stuck syncing, so i manually turn off sync and kill any ongoing sync. But it happens even when the signal really isn't bad.
For example tonight, it said i had 3g, but i wasn't getting any data. So i went outside and still 3g. I turn airplane mode on.. then off again, then presto i have 4g.
I think something is happening where it gets stuck in 3g or 1x with no data, and it makes no attempts to go back to 3g, or back to 4g, it just sits there burning up my battery.
SO a: should the phone ever get really hot to the touch ? (The back.. it's the battery that is warm i'm sure)
b. What i can i do so it will stop being so stupid and pick up the good 4g when it's clearly there...
c. I just have to stop this losing battery power in 20 min flat problem. My wife has the same phone and she has no such problems.
I can tell it's doing it as i can fell my pocket getting hot. That shouldn't happen in my opinion.
What software are you running stock of other?

weren't there reports of people having an issue like this with the phone getting stuck when switching from 3g / 4g? i'm wanting to say i've heard of stock phones doing that and a replacement phone fixed it. unless you want to keep using a manual effort to force it back like what you are doing with airplane mode...
I've had similar issues in low signal areas (unfortunately that is the norm where I work). It doesn't happen all the time, maybe once a week where the phone gets really hot even when not in use. I reboot to fix.
I was running Viper for months and it happened with both stock and that ROM. Running CM10.1 now, and I'll see if that changes anything.
Sorry, but I guess I have nothing to add for cause or solution, just thought I'd share having the same issue.
