[Q] Updated to Bionix and will not boot - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
My camera was not working so I backup my Bionix rom, my apps with titanium, etc. I did a new install of Bionix and then updated the OverStock v1.3 kernel using recovery screen. My phone will not boot up. I think I should have updated the kernel through an app that does that, so I messed up.
I am unable to go into recovery. I am able to get to download mode. I am downloading the tool box for vibrant along with the bionix rom. I have never used the vibrant tool box, but my questions:
1. Can use vibrant tool box under download mode and install a new copy of bionix without loosing info of the internal memory card?
2. If I use Oding3_V1.0 and install Eugene_2e_jk2 (like I originally did a long time ago), would I loose the info in the internal memory card?
3. Is there another, easier way to get bionix install and not loose my internal memory card?
I would appreciate any help. I am downloading both programs and it is tacking a while, so any help would help a lot while I wait.

whatever you do it shouldnt wipe your internal sdcard....but i do suggest to just odin back to stock
thanks button if i helped

Thanks a lot! That is a good to know. I was worried I would loose all the info in the internal card.
Do you know if there is a newer version of the eugene with root? Or what would you recommend as the latest stock with root for odin?
Thanks again!

this one has never failed and is the easiest to root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1047087

I see it says ** Re-partition is checked now in ODIN - THIS IS APPROPRIATE!! **
I just want to make sure that if check this, my insternal sdcard, that is part of the phone memory, wont be formatted, correct?
Sorry for the questions, but I don't want it to go wrong!

yes it wont be formatted ...the only thing it format is the system file

[Q] Ghost of ROMs past haunts my Vibrant

I've been stuck in a weird place for some time with my phone. After I installed clockwork mod, backed up, installed some flavour of FroYo, and made the mistake of trying to flash back my old back up without properly wiping things have been getting weird. I can use ODIN to flash fresh ROMs, but I always get a bunch of FCs at startup, and most apps don't work. I tried to do all kinds of tricks to completely wipe the internal SD, but there is always some remnants of old fun hanging about causing cascading errors and FCs. No matter what I try to do, MyBackupPro and Rommanager is always present, but not working.
How I can completely rid myself of anything not stock ROM?
I've finally gotten back to root ADB, after a long and hard battle. I believe this may hold the key to salvation for my Vibrant.
Any and all suggestions are much appreciated!
Things I've already tried:
EUGENE373_SamsungS_Froyo_PDA -> Stock 2.1 T959UVJFD
EUGENE373_SamsungS_Froyo_PDA -> battery pull -> Stock 2.1 T959UVJFD
Stock 2.1 T959UVJFD -> EUGENE373_SamsungS_Froyo_PDA
Bionix1.9.zip - would not install due to some error I can't recall right now. Will update.
Factory wipe - from Settings menu
Wipe in Clockworkmod menu
Wipe all in adb shell
The weird *2767*3855#* factory wipe
UPDATE:
Strangest thing happened: I flashed an old ROM back onto the phone with Odin 1.52, then the Updated Stock 2.1 also via Odin the usual FC-ing was still there. Then I rebooted into recovery, reinstalled the Clockworkmod recovery menu, installed the root-update.zip in order to have root shell access. Then I pushed VibrantDeodexed1_2.zip and Vibrantfroyo_R3.zip on to the sd card. I tried to apply the VibrantDeodexed1_2.zip, but it aborted due to some catalog not present. However, I did notice that the installation erased /system and deleted some files, and I had the notion to try and install the VibrantFroyo_R3.zip. The installation succeeded, and Lo and Behold!
the phone has returned to the land of the living! Wohoo!!
I do not fully understand how this can be, but there is no Force Closing of programs any longer. What a relief!
Thanks to everybody who contributed ideas!
If you're having problems, back up whatever data you want to keep to your computer. Go download eugenes 2.2 that doesn't brick. Flash that, do a battery pull once it's done (don't reboot). Then go get a stock eclair file, flash that with odin and check repartition. This solved every problem I had from flashing way too many roms.
Yea, when in doubt I thank the deities for Eugene and flash his "Froyo that doesn't brick" followed by the stock JFD firmware.

Yeah, that's the weird part.. It doesn't really delete anything. Files are still there, and so are the un-wanted system files, too.
Does anyone know if I can manually partition the sdcard?
Had a similar issue, and couldn't fully erase my files. Figured out how to completely erase everything, before you proceed, backup your files and be ready to Odin. In rom manager, enable advanced mode in settings, then use the flash alternate recovery option. That set my current cwm version to 2.5.1.2, now when I reboot to cwm i have a menu that says something similar to "sd and storage" and within that menu are options to completely format all of the internal storage. Be careful in there, you can delete everything, incl the sd ext, but I think this is what you are looking for.
Edited - I rebooted and checked the menus, mounts and storage in cwm is what you are looking for after flashing the alternate recovery, I can confirm this removes remnants that an Odin repartition or factory format still leaves behind, let me reiterate, backup your personal files, cause this does remove everything
After formatting, Odin away

When I boot into recovery, I always have to reinstall packages to get to the CWM recovery menu. I tried to clear everything from the mounts and storage submenu; I cleared system, cache and data, then flashed stock eclair. STILL the same applications and files sit on the internal SD.
When performing the wiping, all looks normal. It does take a little time, and the system reports that all is going according to plan, yet no files are deleted.
What can possibly make the phone act this way? Are there no super secret samsung-technician codes that allow me to completely wipe clean the face of the sdcard?
When you get into the storage and mounts menu, I would format everything given what you're experiencing. Format boot, data, system, cache, and sdcard. Dont format the sd ext, thats the physical card. After formatting all of those your phone should be an odin ready blank slate, mine was. Hope this helps.

I was hoping that would help you friend, that process wiped mine clean of all remnants. Good luck in getting her back into a functional state.
After reading som more, contacting Samsung Service, I've decided to send the phone in for service. [sigh]
I've learnt a lot about ADB, pushing and pulling files, rooting, unrooting, swapping ROMS and whatnot. Still, the phone is stuck in that weird place where I cannot delete files.
Hopefully the service team can fix this poor, misguided phone

[Q] Cant delete anything.

Hey guys I have been trolling this forum for some very useful information, and it has helped me quite a bit, but on this one I am stuck. Every time I try and delete something on this phone (Samsung Vibrant) it just comes back. This was not my phone before, I am just trying to put it back to stock.
I have flashed the phone 3 times using odin, including using the re-partition option.
When I hook the phone up to the pc, and load update.zip into the root folder, and reboot into recovery mode, it says cannot find sd card/update.zip. Even when I go in and manually delete apps if I reboot the phone, they all just come back.
Am I missing something? part of me wants to say its something easy.. but I have searched and searched about this and found nothing. Is there a mod out there that does this? -Thanks
*edit* Oh, and it seems like any time I think I might get close, I get the little android and the triange w/ the exclamation point.
Bueller?
How are you deleting? What are you deleting? Why are you using odin to delete apps? Not enough info to help you.
Hi, I am just trying to totally wipe the phone back to stock, hence odin. I dont care about info being lost. But like I said.. if I go in and manage applications, and remove them manually, I restart the phone and like magic they are all back.. I am quite confused. I hook the phone up to the pc, open the phone and manually delete pics and songs that way.. unplug the phone from the pc, and its like i never did anything.

If you want to wipe the best thing to do is flash Eugene's Froyo that does not brick. That will get rid of EVERYTHING. From there flash JFD. That will give you the clean start you want.

Yeah, that is the problem. I already did that, and the stuff is still there. I did it 3 times. I flashed it with the 512 pit, did a re-partition and the JFD. Then went back and even updated it to the JI6 firmware, and loaded it with the stock kernel.
I'll help you out before you needlessly flash roms over and over and over.
Before you say, "WTF!!!! That doesn't answer my question" please read to the end.
1. As I understand your problem, you want to wide everything from your INTERNAL SD Card.
2. as such, The steps are as follows:
3. Go to settings.
4. Go to "SD Card and phone storage"
5. "Unmount phone storage"
6. "Format phone storage"
This is assuming that you are ALREADY on stock Rom.
If not, flash the stock first, then wipe your internal SD.
Remove your External SD and SIM card. *(Not required), but i'm paranoid, and this always helps me feel better on the off chance that something does happen while i'm wiping the internal SD.
GL
That was first thing I tried to do, sorry I didnt post that in OP. I tried to unmount and format using the in phone software. I have tried a hard reset using the button combinations on the phone. I have also done a factory format using the service code. All to no avail.
Thanks for the input.. believe me, if I could have avoided the time and hassle of reading about odin I would have. Odin was a last resort.
I dont know if this is helpful or not but after I format the internal sd.
Total Space: 13.18 GB
Free Space 12.31 GB
I am really beginning to think that the internal SD is broken/corrupted or something. As I said in the OP when I boot into recovery, it says it cannot find sdcard/update.zip. Furthermore, if I mount the usb as mass storage, and go into the folders and delete pictures/whatnot. Even if I unplug the phone from the computer, its as if I never did anything. The pictures will all still be there as if nothing happened. If I go in and manage apps, and remove them all one by one, then reboot the phone all the apps are there. These are all reasons why I think the internal storage is messed up.
I was/am quite confused. This is why I requested ideas from people smarter than me.. i.e you guys . Thanks for all the input this far, my OP was a little lacking I suppose.
Did you ever get problem resolved?

I had the same problem with u. Can't delete few old files that stored in the internal SD. Also, I can't use update.zip in the recovery mode. It says "cannot find sdcard/update.zip.
My phone also can't play MP3 file or 3GP file that transfered from other phone / PC.
Anyone can help us ?
How are you deleting the files?
What are you running?
the update.zip, are you guys talking about rooting, or clockwork recovery?
Sorry, thanksgiving was preventing me from following the thread. The problem is still unresolved. I was trying the update.zip in recovery mode, as far as I know there is no clockwork on the phone. I thought the update.zip was just a recovery image that the phone used as a basis for restoring the phone.

I have tried deleting files a few different ways.
Odin, directly via pc with usb mount, and using the software on the phone itself, and tried using factory formats/resets hard and soft.
What do you mean by what am I running?
i just buy a used vibrant. There are some photos & files in the internal memory. I can erase it with file manager, but when I restart the phone, those photos & files appear again.
Same thing with with the gmail account. This gmail account is sign up by previous user. I can't remove this account.
I already try using "factory reset", but it's useless. Those photos & gmail account still in my phone.
I'm running in 2.1 T959UVJI2
about the update.zip, I'm using for rooting. I can't root the phone too. I'm using the file "SGH-959 Root Update.zip" then rename it to "update.zip"
I put this update.zip that the root folder of my internal SD. Bad thing is, this file is gone when I restart my phone (turn off then turn on). So, when I goes to recovery mode, it always said : cannot find sd card/update.zip
anybody can help me ? pleaseeee. So frustated >.<
Yeah that sounds pretty much exactly like my problems.
Perhaps people are having a hard time helping because we cant determine what you are trying to do....
first, yes, there is a clockwork recovery... download rom manager from the market.
there are going to be folders on the internal memory you can not remove because the OS puts them there.
could you please say exactly what you want to do???
I am just trying to delete everything and basically restore the phone back to factory. But it seems like the normal ways of doing that are not working.
Use ODIN to go to stock ji6 or jk2. I have a guide in my signature
Once you reboot mount the internal memory and format it. Settings > sd card and phone storage

Noob that read the Bible and is kinda lost still

Okay, so after seeing how most people have flashed their phones, I'm tempted to do this sooner rather than later.
So my phone being rooted/unlocked now.
The next step is to back up, I have Titanium Pro, am to only backup apps with it?
Is that considered a sufficient back up of the phone?
I'm running Eclair 2.1update1 - T959UVJI6
I keep reading about Odin, etc so this is throwing me for a loop as to how to do this.
Then I just download a ROM that I like, load it on my microSD and flash through there, (volume button, power button, pressing, etc)?
Thanks, appreciate any help.
You can back up everything with titanium pro. But most people use it to.restore 3rd party apps or to uninstall or freeze apps. Also make sure you have rom manager installed and flash clockwork recovery. Put your rom of choice on your internal sd card not your external micro sd card.

Odin is mostly used when you mess up your phone and it wont work. Search around and read up and download odin and the correct files and have it on hand for.when you bork up your phone.

Do NOT backup red text apps their system apps and will give you a headache later.
Download rom manager and click first option and flash clockwork.
Then press install rom from SD card
It will boot into recovery if its green text recovery press reinstall packages then it'll reboot and go there again click reinstall packages again.
Now its set.
Go to install zip from SD card.
Then again
And find ur rom.
Press install.
Wait till its done.

You have to download some files on your PC for Odin so u can go to a safe rom that wont brick on ya
Yea after you download odin you will need 2 different files. Ones a tar file and the other is a pit file. You only use these via odin. Just be patient when your waiting for it to boot up after flashing. Especially if you flashed a rom that has a voodoo kernel. It will take a good 10-15 minutes to convert. Just let it be.

I was thinking Team Whiskey or Axura, still on the fence with either of these two.
But 10-15 minutes??
I took my SC card out and popped it into my PC, no files other than my music and pictures.
I then renamed the location from TitaniumBackup to external_sd/titaniumbackup, restarted the phone, opened TB to do a batch backup and there were no files listed. I renamed the default save location back to TitaniumBackup and the files were there.
Confusing.
How do I set the batch backups to save to my external SD card?
Or what am I doing wrong?
Im kind of confused as to what you are trying to do. Why would you want to save your titanium backups to your external sd card? There is really no reason to.

Can't Flash Roms or zip files in CWM...Need help

The problem started when after I flashed the recovery with Odin. When I booted into the recovery and tried to install the superuser zip file I keep getting this message: "E:cant copy META-INF/google/android/update-binary". I get this message when I try to flash a Rom: "E:Can't open /sdcard/update-unamed-1.3.1-full.zip". I've been trying to flash the CM7 nightlies and the "Unamed" Rom. Any help with this will be much appreciated.
Also, I ended up having to install superuser via SuperOneClick
Honestly, I stopped trying after the phone kept confusing me with SD Card, External Card, and Internal Card/External SD Card BS it was giving me.
I just left my phone rooted, lol.
Sometimes, this tends to happen if you rooted your phone with an anti-virus software running on your PC which can hinder the rooting process. (always the case with my HTC Inspire 4G). So turning it off could allow you to re-download Odin, and run the program again to root it again so it can install the proper files.
Once you get it re-rooted, get into CWM, do a backup, and Clear your Cache, Data and reinstall the ROM from your Internal Card or External Card (which ever you used to place the ROM in).
Good luck.

CWM and root are not even related....
root is root access to your OS /system and its functions. it has nothing to do with RECOVERY or anything outside of a RUNNING OS. i wish everyone would understand that.
as long as CWM is there, AND WORKING PROPERLY, rooting has nothing to do with it. you can flash a new rom from bone stock OS, as long as you have the CWM kernel.
@OP, you have these files (roms) located on the INTERNAL SD right?
I think that's why @homescrub said:
"and run the program again to root it again so it can install the proper files."
Proper files being cwm. As of yet I don't know of a way to install cwm without root on this phone. I know the captivate previously allowed an update to be flashed using stock recovery to get cwm.

that does NOT require root. you dont flash it via ROM manager....so whats the need for root to add CWM?

Or will any ROM work once I don't wipe the data manually from CWM? I'm on an old build of a Gingerbread MIUI ROM, but would flashing an ICS ROM work fine?
Need to do something - it's the last straw before I bite the bullet and buy an iPhone 4S (saving myself €680 in the process).
Backing up in CWM shows "Error while generating MD5 sum!" when it's nearly complete, backing up to the internal SD card as when I try a normal one it comes up "Error while backing up boot image" straight away. Going out to buy a 4S at around lunch time if it doesn't work so I need help quickly.

it is very simple to backup your contacts/call logs/data/apps with MIUI backup, if you are moving MIUI to MIUI
it is strongly recommended to wipe your data before moving from GB to ICS.
I have solution for MD5 checksum error, if you need ask...

Well then I guess I'll flash a GB ROM so. What's the solution can I ask? I'm getting a continuous boot-loop, so unfortunately I cannot back-up via MIUI Backup.

Just try the reverse and if it doesn't work, you may need a compulsive reboot device

What do you mean reverse? Back to stock? I would, but the computer I'm on doesn't have anything on it with relation to my SII.

MD5 checksum error of CWM of the MIUI roms is a known issue,
solutions are:
1) flash a siyah GB kernel from CWM and reboot to its CWM and make a back up,
by default backup will be stored to external SD, make space for atleas 1.5 gb (depends on your apps size, if only few apps 1 GB is enough)
if above also is giving same treble, use the second option which worked for me nicely..
2) Download ROM manager, falsh CWM version from thata, reboot recovery from Rom manager from there make a Backup..
CWM will not read the Backup from External SD by default move your backups to internel backup forlder of Clockworkmod.
then you dowload the latest GB version MIUI, either form XDA or from MIUI sites and flash from CWM, again flash Siyah

I can't actually get into the phone in any way so I guess I'll have to try the kernel. Will any version of the kernel work?

Put it onto the SD card yeah? And apply update or install zip? I'm guessing zip.

Please save us time and go buy your iphone, instead of making excuses....

I'm fairly sure there's space on the phone. But I can't copy it over because it's saying there's zero space on the phone? As it's including the external SD card files in the total. :S

Please go and get out of my thread. Thanks. Mis-interpretation at its finest. If I wanted to just go ahead and buy the iPhone I would, but I don't. It's the last straw as everything else I've done has failed. You can't deny that they're the most reliable phone there is.
bootloop is the result of launcher & Themes, when I tryed to change themes I got FCs and bootloop on reboot, only worked was factory data reset and flash the same ROM zip from CWM...
but you are concerened about your apps & data, by flashing the siyah I dont think resolve bootloop issue but you may be able to make a back up from its Recovery...
since you have no access to interal SD now, copy to external SD and select kernel zip from install zip from external SD card. i hope it will work..
otherwise you will have to flash Tar version of the Siyah kernel form ODIN in download mod

Thanks. Yes. I hope to just backup with Siyah. I'm currently transferring all 19GB's worth of data on my SD card to my computer in hopes that it will show up with space in Finder. This will take a while.

Also I do have access to it. But only through "external SD" in the internal files.
I don't have an SD card adapter so I can't use that.

actually I dont get.....
Your phone is booted and are you able to access the phone memory throu PC, that is what you mean??
You accuse others of misinterpretation.
Which part of "help-me-fix-my-phone-or-I'll-buy -an-iphone-right-now-in-fact-during-my-lunchbreak" am I misinterpretating?
And with an attitude like yours, why should we care?

Quite a lot. Maybe it came across as a little rude, but there's no denying that iPhone's are the most reliable smart phone on the market. Most Android phones need you to root/flash to get the most out the system, with iPhone's this isn't the case. I know they're not the best phone on the market, which doesn't delight me but I'm contempt owning one. Knowing that something is not likely to go wrong - leaving me without any of my precious data.
With my SII all that happened was the phone died, and then all of a sudden it started boot-looping, after working fine for about a month (had a similar problem before).
Not happy about being trapped into Apple's eco-system, but if that's what it takes to have a reliable phone with superb battery life then that's what I'm going to do. And once there is a jailbreak for the 4S on 5.1 I'll be doing it ASAP.
Anyway; flashed that kernel to my phone. Worked a treat, and the whole back-up was successful (changed my CWM to a touch version too lol). Thanks a lot ZACQ8.
Here's hoping that flashing a new ROM will work smoothly. If so I'm going to sell it, get the $$$, bring the 4S back (I've got 14 day cooling off period) and try out the One X.
I know I should really just be searching but I doubt I'll find a specific answer so... does anyone have suggestions for a reliable ROM?
Download 'My Phone Explorer' on your computer, being using it for two years now with no complaints, used it with a sgs2 recently.

From this website? http://www.fjsoft.at/en/
Quite a generic name for a piece of software, and does it work without actually needing access to the phone in an 'off' state? As still getting boot-loop meaning I've no chance of getting into the phone.
I expect it to not work very nicely with Mac OSX though. Really sounding like an Apple fanboy, eh?
Also, the ROM I'm looking for (quite specific) has to be 2.3 and a non-wipe ROM. Currently downloading 'XWLA4 by TugaPower'. The non-wipe version, let's hope.
Successfully flashed that ROM, getting FC's when trying to enter my contacts. So then went into CWM, tried to restore my old backup but it's saying: "MD5 mismatch!"
How exactly do I fix this to be able to flash my backup of my previous ROM?
