So, as I said, I LOVE this phone and think it rocks! I've been having all sorts of fun with it and the ROMS that are available.
However, I wanted to ask if anyone had any views or personal knowledge of the Google Nexus One?
Now that I have been truly spoiled by Android and this community, I started keeping an eye on ebay, CL, the usual places for any stellar deals. I'm seeing some Nexus One phones at reasonable prices but am unsure if I would be doing the right thing moving to an older model than the Aria.
It does appear to have a better screen and faster processor but I tohught I'd tap the community for your views.
Please, I'm not looking for any haters, flamers or getting into a pissing match about why the Aria is better that phone x,y, & z. I'm purely asking from a users perspective whether it's worth me having to invest (because I'll lose money on the Aria) to "upgrade" to a Nexus One?
Also bear in mind I'm NOT looking for any phones tied in with a contract, hence why I am somewhat limited in my scope.
Many thanks everyone.
Personally I'm favoring the inspire, but it might be awhile before it gets down to a reasonable price (and a while before someone figures out how to root the new hboot).

You need to go visit the HTC Inspire forum. The Inspire can be rooted despite the HBOOT loader that was shipped on the phone. IMO $399 non-commit for a phone like the Inspire is pretty reasonable, too.
Nice! I will go check it out. Thanks!
"Do you mind if I turn up the AC?"
Thanks for the pointers guys. I'd still really like to hear more pros / cons directly about the N1 as compared to the Aria.

There are some multitouch problems on the N1. It goes crazy when your cross the axis. Same problem came with the Desire with Amoled screen. I think there is also another problem that makes the grey color look pink-ish

Could you clarify that a bit for me? I'm not even sure what that means - crossing the axis?
To be fair, I don't really use many gestures other than pinch-zoom, does it affect that?

Even though it is a little older, the N1 will still be faster than the Aria. And the development community is just huge.
I'm thinking about getting the Nexus S. They will be available in Canada soon, on bands that are AT&T compatible.
Anyway, I don't see how anyone on XDA would be disappointed with the N1. There's just so much you can do with it.

No it doesn't affect pinch-to-zoom but there are games or apps where you need to cross your fingers and it is affected by this issue. Here's a video that kind of shows what I'm talking about. Same problem came with the Desire with Amoled screen.

Ahh, I see. THANKS for the video post, that really clearly illustrates the issue. Is this a problem on the super LCD screen or just the AMOLED and was was it addressed at all via firmware updates?
Bottom line, I'm really on the fence about getting a Nexus One as I am happy with my Aria. The main points in favor for me I think is coming down to Nexus having bigger screen and being able to use the trackball as my notifier - the LED on the Aria SUCKS!!
as from what i seen on the multi-touch test in dev tools our aria suffers the similar problems

Just Amoled, it dissaperead as soon as HTC started releasing the Desire with S-LCD screen. It was a hardware problem, that's what I read, at least. I don't think it was ever fixed. At least I never read anything about it.

Download dev tools from the market or any multi touch test and you'll see what he's talking about. It's because the aria has a capacitive touch screen like the nexus one. Capacitive screens can only register two touch points. And really only good enough to recognize a "pinching" gesture.
I believe most of that info is correct.
Thanks, you know what, I already tried it and it's true! It causes some very weird behaviors....who knew??!!
To be honest it really doens't affect much in terms of real world usage and I'm still pondering the idea of getting a N1 as I'm actually pretty happy with my Aria. We'll see.

Actually, I'm speculating about a thread, 2 pms, and the Evo 3D I'm currently holding in my hand
And the battery comment is coming from a Sprint Manager who has been running the phone for the past 2 days and a Sprint Employee that's had it since yesterday morning.

Of an Evo 4G? While after the hacks and kernels came out I've had fantastic battery life to even suggest that nobody really had a problem with it is absolutely absurd.
But if the portrait 3D is true, well, I'll be thrilled... color me skeptical.
I'm headed to RS right now to see my pals, surely they have one in store. I need to get to the bottom of this and I don't care if you're at the top.
Mine does 720p only for recording. I didn't take the OTA, if that makes a difference?

Portrait 3D is true, with some caveats. To me, at least, the best viewing distance in landscape is about 12 inches. In portrait, it has to be about 20 - closer than that is blurry. However, if you zoom one of the 3D pictures, the 3D effect is broken. In portrait view, the widescreen photos are tiny. Since you can see them, and you have to view them from 2 feet, it's hard to see. But, they are definitely still 3D in portrait. So, there is some hope for a 3D portrait homescreen!

Go for it. I've been hearing mixed results for this as well, and I'm kind of confused as well. I won't be getting my 3D until this weekend (sad face haha), but I've been playing with a couple for the past few days thanks to some good friends. While I haven't checked the video setting, someone sent me a video as proof of concept and sure as hell looked 1080p. I'm wondering as well, since reviews about the camcorder have been mixed as well...This is very interesting.
But be sure to let me know what you find out! haha

Uh, if you are holding a 3D in your hand right now, why don't you just check the video settings right now?.
Also, how can you tell a video is in 1080p just by looking at it? It's a simple thing to confirm - check the properties of the file and take a look at the resolution.

Because I was in a Sprint store 10 minutes ago. I didn't think this was even a point of debate since I had been told by three different people it worked at 1080p. Since this thread has been started, I've been pm'ed by two people saying it doesn't do 1080p, and one more person saying I should stick to my story and that they have 1080p. I've updated the article to say this is still being debated. How in heck can people be confused about this? Just look in the settings -_-

That was more for the Portrait 3D since someone disagreed with one line of the article and through the childish "unbelievable" card.
I didn't check it because I didn't think it was a point of debate. I was told by two people that it recorded and there was no argument on here. Somehow people are still arguing here about whether or not 3D works in portrait, so I was really going to look at that.

I'd like to know how one can even tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on a screen that is only 540p?
Also, I'd like to you tune ESPN HD and then tune NBC HD and tell me if you can tell a difference between the two? Without googling it, which one is broadcast in 720p and which one in 1080i?

That's not the issue however. For months HTC has advertised 1080p recording, then last minute they changed it to only 720p. Sure it may not be noticeable to you or others, but we simply want what we were promised. That also implies that the phone is capable of recording in 1080p, but for some unknown reason, is being limited to 720p. Don't you want the full potential of your device?

I'm willing to bet the Evo3D's 1080p recording ability is on par with the Evo4G's 720p recording ability....
So the Evo3D has fantastic, cheap point-n-shoot quality for 720p video (which these days is impressive compared to what I grew up with costing thousands upon thousands of dollars)...and it's 1080p offerings were, well, paltry at best.....and we all know what happened when the evo4g's 720p recording didn't pan out as expected....(though my biggest problem with it was that ****ty AMR audio codec, but I digress)....
...we'll probably be able to open this up and be able to enjoy the lack-luster jumpy low-framerate 1080p that we were originally promised.
From a "principals" point of view, yeah, I'm offended.... but from a technical and practical point of view? It's a good decision on their part.
Now, If I were head of their hardware development department I would employ the same tactic I use at my technical job where "quality" (being a moving target depending on the person) is critical.... employ "expectations management"....where you under promise and over deliver...then everybody is always capable of providing the desired output and everybody is always impressed with what results.
Does this excuse their professional responsibility to deliver on promises? No, not at all, but perhaps for some of you it can help explain it.
some facts from some one with a 3d. As it comes it does not do 1080p. I have not taken the ota and there is a update for the camera in it. I would bet the its enables the 1080p so that's the difference. Also the ota is automatic after activation you have to cancel it so the two different stories.
Well i thought this phone was gonna be epic, which it really isnt that bad, just i feel as if htc really really skipped out on the quality of this phone, people taking phones back 3 or 4 times is just unacceptable, and all of these bugs in the software are ridiculous, from bad signal strength to wake locks, dead pixels and just careless quality issues like dust under the screen and in the cameras, just wish htc would of taken more time to get this one right since its such a fast and highly anticipated phone! My trust and reliability in htc has been lowered due to this product!

I haven't had one single issue with my phone that you referred to. But to be honest those issues happen to all phones when first released. There are always bad phones that get released first. Oh well ish happens....
I love the phone, and the fact that they #TEAMWIN just verified the 3D to be overclocked to 1.7 ghz with no unlocked bootloader is just a small hint of what this phone is about to become. SWEET!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats.....thanks for the unnecessary post. Take the phone back if you want.
Also, keep in mind that a lot of the people returning the phones are OCD about things typical people would never notice (most people here, including myself are).
The construction is great compared to any other phone. Compare it to the SGS2. Yes we have dead pixels, and etc. But the SGS2 has the same things, and even more (tinted screen, gps, massive over heating, etc).
All phones have problems. That is the result of an customizable, open system like android. Companies cannot catch everything in their testing. If you want a nearly (again, nearly, not perfect) phone upon release...then get an iphone and leave us be with our initially bug, but eventually awesome, killer phones we call androids.

I too was expecting to be blown away since I was coming from a samsung epic. After only a few days with my first HTC phone, I really don't know what the big deal is. Yeah ok the phone is 3d, but after a few pictures and video, I havnt used it at all. The phone is heavy like a brick compared to my epic. The screen doesn't have fighting chance against the epic, but it is sharper. I just have a feeling the galaxy s 2 will blow away this phone in every way. One thing I do like about this phone is I'm in love with sense 3.0

First of all don't use the word "epic" when talking about an htc device. It's just not right!
Joking aside some people have bad luck with phones and I am sure there are bad batches of every device no matter who makes it. I hear people talking about dead pixels and bugs everytime a new device comes out. I have never had any major issues with any of my HTC devices I have ever owned. I love this thing more everyday I have it. Call me an htc fanboy if u will but there is a reason I always go with HTC.

Your view on the screen is exactly that, only your view. I personally, after comparing the evo3d to a friend's SGS2, prefer everything about the evo 3d. The screen resolution is awesome, and the colors are very accurate. I compared both phones to a color calibrated monitor. All three devices had the same picture. The evo3d looked just like the monitor....while the SGS2 look grossly oversaturated.
Here is a perfect example. I use my phone to view a lot of images taken with fluorescent microscopes. If I view the picture on my evo3d...it looks perfect. If we view it on my buddies SGS2...the picture is completely unreadable/you can't make an conclusion about your data.
In terms of the rest of the phone...I have posted this page before.

Maybe I seem like a fanboy. But I have used and researched both phones. They both are awesome! But I prefer the evo 3d.
Should have saved your .02 !!
Samsung FTW...... oh wait, what is today? HTC day? Ok sorry.... HTC FTW!!
It really depends on the flavor of the week. Im sticking with my 3D. Ive liked HTC products since they were known as UTStarcom (Apache days).
Hello,
I still think it is far to early in the game to really know any definitive answers about the true potential of the 3VO as the overwhelming majority of Software out there does not take advantage of the Dual Core's of the 3D.
In time, this phone will be fully Rooted and there will also be Software that takes greater advantage of the 3D's Processing Capabilities.
In the mean time, there is far more Memory on the 3D over the 4G, a higher resolution Screen, Sense 3.0 (I realize some do not care for Sense, but I do), and more.
I really think for whatever reason that after some Professional Reviews took a negative take on this Phone, many people have seen the worst in the Phone. All I can say is that if you are not happy, by all means Return it. I personally think it to be a mistake, but it is your money. And with Samsung, they are slow in Releasing Android OS Updates, so while the new Galaxy might be compelling, all is not perfect there.
Cheers,
JJ

Well I didnt what to get into details, cause I dont have my EVO long enough. But right out the box, I feel like the epic screen is much better. Also the EVO feels much heavier. I also didn't feel the difference between processors.
My lcd is tilted. I went in to exchange it and the new phone had a tilted lcd and a dead pixel. Obviously I kept the first one. I haven't had any software issues and this thing runs like a dream. It does suck that there are these hardware issues but it doesn't seen like there are more issues than with most phones that are released. My wife for instance is on her 5th epic 4G and I am taking it into Sprint tonight to have it looked at for another issue..

I was all for going to buy the amaze 4G. It was between that or the Galaxy S2 but now I see all this talk about screen bleed and ocassional lag. Should I just go for the Galaxy S2?

Personally I don't care for this very blu-ish hue from the AMOLED screen on the SGS2, so I think I'm going to pick up the Amaze 4G myself.
I was going to get the SGS2, all the way... the resolution was too much for me, couldn't deal with it. The camera/camera software on this phone and resolution that works sold me on it. (plus you can't beat the sleek design)
My other worry with the Amaze was the lack of any accessories (cases n such) and the fact that the Sensation probably has most of the would be Amaze devs n such. We'll see what happens, but the phone is great as is so far.

i think some people are TOOOOOO picky, sure theres a little bleed from the LED's, but i can see dev's incorporating a led dimming mod that will make it less noticeable. nothing is ever perfect, but for me, this is as close as an android device has gotten

That's what settled it for me.
The resolution on the SGS2 makes all of the icons and indicators look comically large, it kinda looks like a toy.
For people still trying to decide, go into a T-Mobile store and put one in each hand. The difference in build quality and feel will be overwhelming and obvious. As far as the "bleeding" that some are complaining about, it's really, really not that big of a deal. If it were I would be taking mine back, no upgrade here, I paid full price.
Just go into the store and look at them. The AMOLED screen is really beautiful, but it does have that same bluish tint to it and frankly, is not that much better than the screen on the Amaze. At least not that much better to outweigh, in my opinion, is the lower build quality of the SGS2. It's the same "plastic-y" feel that my Vibrant has, this time, they just put some kind of texture on the plastic back.

Not to mention Samsuck's long history of slow, crappy updates, lackluster software and of course touchwiz.

I picked it up to play around with it, and I saw TouchWiz and heard that distinctive TW "click", when you're navigating around.
Immediately had flashbacks to the "bad ole" Vibrant days, not falling for it this time.

I was about to post a similar reply till I read yours, thats it in a nutshell
Got my Amaze yesterday...was too busy to light her up, but will do that today, the phone simply feels great in hand, that AMOLED thing (SGS2) is on point, looks cartoony

I got mines yesterday, I gotta tell you guys that this phone is amazing. The feel, the look, the speed. No lag at all. The development that's coming. Are you kidding me?! Hercules is a great phone but like everyone keeps referring to, touchwiz needs a grownup overhaul. Really. To childlike in its presentation, I had both the epic and the att galaxy s2. Great phones but same ole click Clack. Get the Amaze or wait on the Nexus Prime. Can't go wrong. Peace yall.

Ive read that its pretty loud. A considerable upgrade from the sensation (speaker wise).
I just noticed on my Amaze, my capacitive buttons lights don't always stay on, and are usually off.
I just came from the G2x and I hated it. And I'm a pretty forgiving user. But the Amaze is incredible. I even like HTC Sense. No lag, nice feel, I've been getting 4g speeds around 10 to 12 in Minneapolis where with the G2x I was lucky to get 5. This will be my phone until it breaks or something happens with the Merger. Just a great phone.
Why did you choose the Amaze over the SGS2?
Amaze. Check my impressions thread to see why.
im guessing since youre posting in the amaze forum, you will get a lot of votes for the amaze
Its informative. Might help others decide which phone to get based on other people's experiences.
But the same thing happens every time...you are asking here so most of them will say amaze, you ask this in sgs2 and they will say sgs2
If you like sense, sturdy build this is the one, want lightweight, vibrant display sgs2 is the one. Apart from that both are same in my opinion. Both will get decent dev support and will get cm7.
got the amaze because of the better resolution, the camera/camera software and the sleek design
was a last minute switch, if you can tolerate the resolution on the sgs2 I'd say its a wash, could go either way and be in a good place
I'm stuck debating on the two.

An excerpt from my brief time with the sgs2.

IMO it's the screen Size/Resolution. I went back to the store and had a Sales Rep come outside with me with the Amaze and SGS2.(it was dark outside, and both phones look amazing in the Super Bright store) turned the brightness down on both phones and played Netflix. Amaze looked as clear as it gets and SGS2 looked grey and stretchy in dark scenes.
SGS2 Looks absolutely Horrible on Netflix and with playing a 720p video off the sd card. Blacks look black, but any other colors all have the lines. a gross grey stretching/ banding.
Bought my phone outright for 566.29 at 9am, and returned it at 730pm.
Decided to go with the Amaze(598.35) with the better screen, because i cant compromise on quality.
Been watching Netflix and 720p videos off my sd card and i can honestly say The Amaze wins when it comes to Quality.
If you're thinking of buying the SGS2 i recommend you do, because you'll have 14 days to return it and you definitely wont regret going with the Amaze after.
Sgs2 might have a more vibrant screen, but IMO the colors just plain look better on the Amaze.
I wanted to Love the SGS2, i really did... :'(

I don't trust Samsung's phones enough to spend this kinda of money on them. In my many years of tech support, HTC phones always had the least amount of issues, and the best MFG support. That's why I picked the Amaze.

They both are good phones, why dont you go to the store and hold them in your hand and make a decision. I like Amaze better than SG2 because i dont want to pay for the plastic when i am paying premium price
Amaze, for the camera, shutter buttons (that also wake the device) and higher resolution screen.

I went to my local tmo shop last night to make a decision. I'm already biased against the SGS2 since I've had a horrible experience with the original galaxy. Laggy menus, crap gps, crap viewing in bright light, crap battery performance unless I turn everything off, etc. Picked up the SGS2, immediately noticed menu lag. It's not bad, just noticeable, a slight hesitation when selecting/scrolling. Picked up the Amaze, everything worked on the first try, no hesitation. I just get a sneaking suspicion that the SGS2 will start to have performance and battery issues after a couple months of using it, much like my original galaxy. Combine that with the crap support that Samsung has for software/updates and it just hasn't been a good experience. I ordered my Amaze this morning and I can't wait until it arrives next week.

My experience with the Vibrant has forever scarred me in regards to Samsung handsets. Especially when there were Behold users screaming at the top of their lungs about Samsung's support. I choose to believe all the others that said it would be different this time, and it was different, for users of the international version...kinda.
I did it anyway...won't do it again though.

Paralysis of analysis, dude.
You know which one you want, but you probably keep reading the posts here, and in the SGS2 forum, and websites, and they're making you second guess yourself.
You know what you want, pull the trigger (figuratively) already!
You have 14 days to return it if you need to.
