Since I am tired of paying for multiple data plans (office, home network, AT&T for iPhone), I want to just add the hotspot feature to my iPhone. Will the Flyer connect to a WiFi hotspot? I briefly tried it when I first tested a Flyer with no success - before I commit full time I want to know if anyone else has been successful with this.
It works with my HTC Inspire. I would guess IPhone works too..
And mine works fine with the Desire Z's mobile hotspot functionality.
Works fine on my Droid X
no ad hoc
I was unable to connect to an ad hoc wifi connection on my iPhone. Are the android phones different? Been waiting for a root so I can access ad hoc wifi hotspots.
There was another post about troubles connecting to ad-hoc / tethered wlans. Seems as though Android phones are infrastructure wlans which workfine with the Flyer. Do a search for "tethered", there may have been an app to help.

My tethering is with iPhone jailbroken and mywi. So I was unable to ad hoc tether. Would be nice to get this tethered to my phone but I was unable to find a work around. Here is hoping for a root quickly.

Works from my Atrix with a custom APN.
Ad hoc solution Available
I have seen ad hoc tethering solution for rooted android devices.
I haven't been able to connect to my OG Droid via Barnacle. Not sure the Flyer can connect to an ad-hoc network.

htc Flyer doens't have Ad Hoc.
From what I have researched, there is no ad hoc connection at this moment. Hopefully HTC or a Root will change that.
Works perfect with my Desi Hotspot.
I buy Flyer only wifi for that use with the hot spot of the desi and ROCK IT!!!

I have a rooted droid x using wireless tether and also have barnacle installed, depends on the day which one works best. I can connect my laptop no problem. My htc evo won't find the wireless signal?? I tried using bluetooth also, still won't work. Does the evo prohibit peer to peer?

It's because wireless tether for root users and barnacle both setup ad-hoc networks. Android doesn't see ad-hoc networks like your pc does. Search on this and there are some files that have been edited on other device that could help get around this, although I never had any luck. There's been a mobile access point ported for the vibrant that I'm using now, that creates an infrastructure mode, maybe they have one for your device?
I wanted to know which cheap HTC phone can be used to be tethered with my flyer to share phone's 3g without using an hotspot connection. Right now I have a N900 but it cant be tethered to the flyer.
Thanks.

Tethering depends on your cell carrier. If they are not blocking it, any rooted android phone can tether.
The real question is whether there is any carrier left not actively tryng to block tethering?
From a technical point of view the only requirement is that the device offering up access has to support infrastructure mode, or the flyer has to be set up to access adhoc networking. Most of the newer rooted phones can offer infrastructure mode, to my knowledge, though I'm honestly not sure how much of that was kernel dependent on the older devices. There is a wpa supplicant mod that can be done to allow your tablet to connect to adhoc, but as already stated, the carriers are cracking down on tethering

Amazon is selling the HTC Thunderbolt for 1 cent today, on 2-year contract. That'd let you tether with LTE rather than 3G, after rooting.... and it's an easy phone to root.
if that HTC Thunderbolt is on Verizon, they are one of the strictest as far as blocking tethering and limiting data amounts consumed as well as tiered pricing. I would go with someone else unless you are already on their plans or you have a big budget. There are other options to get a very serviceable Android with no contract.
I have no contract with Verizon, but Im planning to use my t-mobile sim from my N900 on a phone with android and give the N900 to my bro. I just wanted a cheap phone because it will be used just as a phone and for teething with the tablet. So I was looking on amazon and an unlocked wildfire s or galaxy ace could be my choice.
But does tmobile have any issues blocking thier 3g?

The dilemma:
Just moved into a new home and I don't have internet or cable for a week. So, with my Rezound I thought I would just tether to my computer and hook my computer to my tv.
I downloaded PdaNet and got a USB error. I have 3 USB ports and 3 USB cords including the one that came with the phone and none worked. Error code=1. I then tried easytether and same problem.
So, just for ****s and giggles I plug my wife's Droid 3 and it works no problem. Watching Hulu with buffering issues and all. WTH man?
I'll take any suggestions. Is there a Tether program that works or settings to try?

I had problems with this also.
When I was running CleanROM, my iPad 2 would never connect. It would see the hotspot just fine and seemed to connect, but I could never getan active Internet connection.
Then I flashed the ineffabilis ROM and whatever version that ROM is running works perfectly for me.
For the record: I haven't had any problems with pdanet on my stock Rezound.
Do you have USB Debugging enabled and the phone in "charge only"?

Yes on both counts. I have a 2nd laptop and it takes a couple reboots to get it working.
On the working laptop I'm running Windows 7 (but no HDMI). On the non-working I'm running Vista (but my wife's D3 works).
I use Easy Tether with no problems on my stock Rezound.

I have this problem too and it all boils down to how the signal is being broadcast and weather or not the receiving device can accept it. Seems that my tablets (xoom and flyer) as well as my ps3 need a softap connection while the only thing I can make broadcast is adhoc. Sucks! I'm sick of switching Sims back to my Tbolt just to get some wifi!

Tethering OK except with encryton
I have run Ineffabilis and Nils and am able to connect unencrypted wireless tether on both. Whenever I enable encryton, the wireless tethered network is seen but I never get a request for a password when attempting to connect and then get an internet connection error message on the guest ipad or laptop.

This is kinda what I'm talking about. Hit show details when the broadcast starts and fails. You'll see that it fails when configuring softtap. Adhoc works, but a lot of devices don't see it and can't encrypt. Kinda blows.... I hate switching Sims back to my Tbolt just to get wifi on my devices.

I am using "Wifi Tether for Root Users" 3.1 beta 10 and it works perfectly fine for tethering in most cases, as long as your other device can connect to ad-hoc networks. I did have to use the "generic" device profile and enable the "Routing Fix" option in settings to get the devices to connect properly though.

Fantastic. I guess I should be more specific. *MY* devices don't see the broadcast. Rooted flyer on GB, roooted xoom on ICS and a ps3. My xoom DID see a broadcast when I was on a HC rom, but factory xooms on HC. Ever saw it...
Just wish it worked flawlessly like Tbolt. I've tried mss clamping, router fix etc... Maybe I'm wrong, but it Right be related to something pertaining to not having full S OFF. Idk...

Most android devices can't connect to ad-hoc by default. For the Xoom, you need to look for a wpa_supplicant file that is modified for ad-hoc devices. The same most likely applies to your Flyer. I have no idea about the PS3 though... but I would also doubt it has any default support for ad-hoc networks.
I am using the modified wpa_supplicant file from the Xoom forums on my Asus Transformer to get ad-hoc compatibility for tethering, and it works absolutely perfectly.

Any one having any luck tethering to a ps3? Anyone find a way to broadcast not in ad_hoc mode?

Hi I was wondering if anybody has been able to tether an evo 3d to an ipad 2 wifi. I have so far tried barnacle and wifi tether unsuccessfully as I am able to connect to the phone but there is no data being shared between the 2 devices, and hoping someone has any input as to how to fix this issue. Btw I have gotten tether to work with other devices its just the ipad I can't figure out.

Most of these devices don't have native Ad Hoc networking support, the providers do it because they want to evade not getting paid for the infrastructure mode when you use their own WiFi hotspot app

yes, you can do it. did it all the time when i had my iPad2...
you need wifi tether, the one that is included in many of the Evo3D ROMs.
in the settings switch device profile to evo 3d, check routing fix and MSS clamping.
disable passwords and use access control.
should work
Thanks to everybody for their input and help turns out I had everything right except in the access control I had to check off the ipad connection and that fix it. Appreciate all the help

OK... After sacrificing my ability to tether by moving from CM7 xronified to ICS, I have tried all kinds of combinations to tether my Epic 4G Touch to my TP on ICS (currently running CM9 alpha 2).

I must be missing something, how is it possible that what version of Android your TouchPad is running effects your phones ability to be a wifi hotspot?
I have never had an issue with using the built in wifi portable hotspot in Android to tether my TouchPad. If you enabled that on your phone when you were running CM7 on your TP, how would ICS affect that.

Touchpad doesn't play so nicely with all tethers. Consider yourself lucky. Alot of people dumped their TPs because they couldn't get tethering to work. It is very buggy. All 3 of my TPs don't tether at will. In the past, there have been different protocols to get each to work. My hotspot could be seen by every other device I own, but my TPs couldn't see it. There are tons of bug threads relating to wifi, but nothing really talking about tethering. I saw a few other threads in forums for phones addressing touch pad, but why not have a place in the touch pad forum to bring it all to one spot?
Now Foxfi works with all three TPs and no ceremonial switches and reboots are required to get it to go.
Mine tethers from my Atrix perfectly with the built in setting. didn't know people were dumping their tp cuz of tether.

Do I need to root my phone? I have the HTC Incredible 2, and am not trying to root that and just trying to connect my Touchpad (wifi-only) to my phone and be able to use internet, market, etc.

As far as I know, without rooting, you will have to pay for the hotspot service by your provider in order to tether. I would say try PDAnet, but I haven't heard of anyone successfully tethering via BT.

That could be the issue too. I will test it with some of my friends phones and report back (might be a day or two). I didn't think about a possible conflict with carrier specific phones.

I use freetether on my pre2 to tether-via-wifi with my touchpad, works great.
You're right about the bluetooth. The option is there, and I can get everything to link up, but it still doesn't seem to be actually sharing the internet connection. I thought it'd be brilliant to get bluetooth tethering going (it should use a bit less energy to tether, giving me better battery life), but it doesn't seem to work in all the testing and fiddling I've done...
